Anthony Horowitz travelled to Antarctica’s frozen wilderness to research the setting for Oblivion, the epic conclusion to his bestselling teen fantasy series the Power of Five. It finds the Five – teenagers Matt, Pedro, Scott, Jamie and Scarlett – scattered in a hostile and dangerous world and struggling to re-group. Horowitz is one of the most prolific and successful writers working in the UK – and is unique for working across so many media. He is a born polymath; juggling writing books, TV series, films, plays and journalism. He has written more than 35 books including the bestselling teenage spy series Alex Rider. He also writes for adults and was commissioned by the Conan Doyle estate to write a new Sherlock Holmes novel, The House of Silk. Horowitz is currently working with Stephen Spielberg and Peter Jackson writing the sequel to the Tintin film; and he has been involved in creating and writing leading television shows including award-winning drama series Foyle’s War, which has a new series airing on ITV this spring.

Anthony Horowitz has written for television, film and theatre and is the creator of the hugely popular detective drama Foyle’s War as well as the Diamond Brothers series, the Alex Rider Books and the supernatural fantasy sequence, The Power of Five.

Partly, it’s the characters. I think Pedro, the Peruvian street urchin, and Scott, the American twin who sells out and goes bad are two of the most interesting and well-drawn characters I’ve ever created. Partly it’s the amount of action I’ve managed to pack into the book which takes place all over the world with volcano eruptions, drug lords, slave markets, battles on the ice etc, etc. But above all, I think the book is my most personal. It has something – vaguely – to say. That may not matter to you but it matters to me.

Dystopia. Apocalypse. Death and destruction. There are two problems when you set out to write a book in this vein. The first is that you find yourself very limited as to what you can actually describe. After all, there are so many ways that the world can end – war, disease, alien invasion, zombification etc. And whatever the cause, the end result is going to be pretty much the same: mass starvation, anarchy, long-term suffering and slow death. Unless you’re writing a screwball comedy (and there have been attempts), there’s hardly going to be much variation in the mood of the book either.
