I like to take one minute to direct your attention at the first ever Comic Clash. It’s a big competition in the german comic scene where every known knight of the ninth art in the teutonic realm picks up arms and joins one of twenty families to forge a master piece comic magazine with no lesser theme than “the meaning of life”. I sided with the old family of mogamobo and made a one pager for their mighty mighty paper. It’s an exciting, game of thrones like battle that is worth checking out and I don’t believe that anything this big has every swept the german comic landscape. On the Erlangen Comic Salon 2012 the winner of this competion will be proclaimed for this year and yes, you may have your say on who wins too. But so far, the biggest winner is the comic loving audience. If you haven’t already buy the magazines here.

Even though I kind of live in the middle of it, I never really cared about the whole 1st of May safari fair, that takes every year in Berlin. One time I couldn’t get home to my psp because some police blocked of the street to mess up some rock throwers. I though for the first time, “fuck the police, I wanna play katamari”. This was pre facebook, mind you, so no real way to vent my anger other than to come up with this idea. NWA would have been proud. Traditionally, the 1st of Mai will be used again to hurt people and break stuff in my town, so maybe this animatic might make things better. Also, if you’re interested in making a romance and/or porn from this concept, my cut is 20%.

Sisyphos Animatic

I did this one 2010. I was inspired by Albert Camus „Le mythe de Sisyphe“, an essay on which he explained his themes of absurdism by the example of the greek myth. The final sentences of the essay really struck me, as they imply that although Sisyphos is condemned by the gods with an eternal meaningless task, he takes pride and joy from this work. In his unbroken peace and through the work he taunts the gods even when they forever won over him. “You must imagine Sisyphos as a happy man” something like that.

I was totally unaware at the time that there was already a short film by Marcel Jancovics from 1975 with the same idea. (watch it, yo) I really enjoyed comparing my approach to his. Even though mine is just an animatic you can really see the different approaches. While he sticks to one camera angle and shows the struggle by alteration of brush stroke, flow and change of porportion, I apply composition, gradual shift of white and black space, montage and camera angles to tell the tale.

Another short animatic I did in 2010 featuring some all time favorites of mine. Just shows how fast time flies. I still remember drawing up this one and making the silly noises. I think, I will make more animatics in the future (and possibly show some more online even though the reactions so far had not been overwhelming. ) I think I should have directed sucker punch btw.

Me & Annecy

My film One Minute Puberty was selected for the competition in Annecy 2012 – some might say, mainly the french that is, the most important animation festival dans le world. Anyhow, I am gonna be there and I hope some of you will come, too. I only heard nice things so far about Annecy and I am really curious how it will be. As a trade off, I won’t make it to FMX/ITFS Stuttgart this year, since I kind of already spent my vacation time for this year. Unrelated: The Faux Images presentation last week went swell I think. I was quite nervous and forgot to show alot of stuff (nervousness + beer + mac UI) but I think the audience had a good time and got to see some super secret WIP and unpublished stuff from my vault. The Berlin animation and motion design scene gathers around this nice event every other month at the LEAP. This time it is my time to embarrass myself in front of the entire industry.
