Shifting Gears

We have decided to shift gears a bit and re-purpose the store to provide safe, quality toys for children with sensory disabilities such as Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Autism affects 1 in 110 children and out of those 1 in 70 are boys. Recent studies suggest these numbers are closer to 1 in 38 children have Autism.

It is not necessarily that more children are getting Autism, but that the methods of detection are getting better. There is also a more open environment where parents are willing to come forward and have their children tested. It does not hold the stigma it did a generation or two ago.

We will be re-tooling the site to ensure there is a rich assortment of sensory friendly toys for all children to enjoy. We will also be setting up the ability to donate to a national autism research foundation that has received 4 stars on the Charity Navigator website (www.charitynavigator.org). Currently there is an add on during checkout, but this will be updated to be a more automatic process. At the end of each month, every cent that is donated will be sent to the Charity. We strongly believe in this and feel our customers share our sentiment.

I wanted to showcase the Food Play items from Melissa and Doug. They have a number of items that allow Children to pretend to cook and prepare meals. They are often mirroring what their parents do while preparing lunch or dinner.

Welcome to the blog for www.alexasplayhouse.com. We are excited to be able to discuss the toys we carry, new products, and other issues surrounding the toy industry.

With all of the recent publicity and recalls surrounding unsafe toys, we were very concerned about what to buy our daughter. In most, if not all, of the chain stores, everything was made in China. I am not saying all toys made in China are bad, but the vast majority of the issues came from that region.

We have carefully screened and selected vendors that have the strictest safety standards, and are not afraid to publish them. We also searched for companies that are right here in the USA. We feel giving back to these local merchants was important to us. We also carry items from European manufacturers if they meet our standards.

We hope you have a chance to review and purchase these wonderful toys. Many of them are durable and long lasting and can be handed down from one generation to the next.
