Tomorrow, Friday 8th August

Starting tonight and running every night until the 17th of August is the Portimao Sardine festival.
Things kick off around 18.00 each evening and carry on until midnight with live music each night.

Saturday 9th August.

The historic town of Silves plays host to its annual medieval festival from 19.30 tonight and every night until the 17th. Costumes are available for all so you can really get in the mood.
This is a great night out, see you there.

Sunday 10th August

Here is a mixed idea for Sunday.

How about a visit to Fuzeta today ( its on the coast between Olhao and Tavira)?
There is a good sized flea market there this morning if you fancy hunting for a bargain or two, and you can follow that with a short ferry ride and visit the island.
This island has a great beach and has a scattering of small houses.
Food and drinks are available at a couple of small bars
As usual make sure you take pleanty of sun cream and an umbrella or two.

Here are some of this weeks highlights here in Algarve

Tuesday 22nd July

Starting today Glasgow Celtic, Middlesbrough, Cardiff City and Vitoria Guimaraes will battle it out for the inaugural Algarve Challenge Cup at the Estadio Algarve on the 22nd and 24th July 2008. With clubs from England, Scotland and Wales pitting themselves against the Portuguese Champions League qualifiers it is sure to provide a real competitive edge to the pre-season tournament as well as providing a fantastic party atmosphere on the Algarve this summer.

This year the Algarve Challenge Cup line up throws some interesting teams together with Celtic v Middlesbrough and Guimaraes v. Cardiff City on the 22nd July. The final evening (24th July) will see Middlesbrough v. Guimaraes and then a clash of the Celts with Celtic v. Cardiff City to wrap up the tournament.
Tournament format
The tournament will be a modified league system where teams will get 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. In addition to this a point will be awarded for every goal scored which will promote attractive attacking football. So a 3-3 draw would get a team the same number of points as a 1-0 victory.

The tournament will take place at the Estadio Algarve. The stadium is situated in the spacious Cities Park on the border between the towns of Faro and Loulé (S. João da Venda), which include a botanical garden, a lake, a golf course, a 400-metre athletics track, training grounds and the future Algarve Central Hospital.
Car: The stadium is located 8km north-west of Faro on the road to Loulé.
Train: The Faro-Lisbon railway will have a station at Cities' Park.

Saturday 26th July

This weekend sees a mini Festival do Marisco (Shellfish Festival) on the island of Culatra.
For those of you that dont know the island, I highly reccommend a visit, you get a ferry from Olhao (make sure you get off at Culatra and not at Farol (not at the lighthouse). Ferries leave Olhao at 09.00, 11.00, 13.00 and 15.00. Culatra is a small, unspoilt, fishing village, so where better to have seafood.

Sunday 27th July

Step back in time tonight for the final night of the "nights of the encharted moorish maiden" taking place at Cacela Velha (on the coast toward the Spanish border) the village is transformed back to the 10th century as is would have been in Moorih times. Food, drink, music and crafts

Today is the start of the 27th Faro Motorcycle Meeting at Estrada da Praia, Faro. This event runs through until Sunday and is the biggest in Europe. Live bands are scheduled every night and you can see just about every type of bike, chopper, trike, etc.

If you do not go to the meeting itself, bikes parade around Faro marina area during the day and night. This is a huge event and adds to a day out exploring Faro town centre.

Friday 18th July

The Sheraton Pine Cliff, Albufeira plays host to the Doors tribute band, Riders on the storm, tonight from 10.00pm. Tickets available from ticketline.pt

Saturday 19th July

On the 5th and 6th of July, the Municipality of Monchique is organising another “Feira do Presunto Tradicional” (Fair of Traditional Smoked Ham).

Which every year promotes the traditional produce of the hills of the Serra. The 11th edition of such event will be held with appearances by Sónia Araújo who will be introducing the show “Canções do Festival”, and the fado singer Ana Moura. Admission is free.

Popular Saints’ Festivals
Jumping over bonfires with the scent of rosemary
In June, the Algarve gains its own special charm as it celebrates its local or so-called “popular” patron saints. Villages, towns and cities bedeck their squares and streets with brightly–coloured flagpoles, decorated with myrtle and lavender to celebrate the month of St. Anthony, St. John and St. Peter.
The ground is prepared for the open-air festivities and people dance to the sound of popular music, jumping over bonfires whilst cheering their respective patron saints Wine is drunk and grilled sardines are eaten. This is a ritual that is repeated in almost every town and village in the Algarve on these special hot nights that herald the arrival of summer. In an atmosphere of great merriment, heavily marked by the intense smell of the rosemary that is burnt on the bonfires, and the pleasant aroma of the pots of sweet basil (in which are placed short verses alluding to the saints, which will later be exchanged between sweethearts), the time is one of conviviality, eating and lots of entertainment.
In the old days, the girls of marriageable age entertained themselves by drawing “lots”, as part of a game of divination and interpretation of the future, based on a variety of situations. The sorte das favas was the most famous way of foretelling the future and allowed the girls to see if the year was going to be a prosperous one, a time of abundance, or a poor one, a year of hardship. The girls would get hold of three broad beans – one shelled, another one with half its skin and the other one completely unshelled – and then, after jumping over the bonfire nine times, they would place them under the pillow, removing one the next morning. If the shelled bean was drawn out, the next year would be one of poverty (the opposite would mean a year of prosperity). The burning of thistles, the melting of lead or the sorte da bacia de água (a drawing of lots based on the use of a basin of water) are other versions of these games, in which having fun was more important than actually believing in the result.
Nowadays, the highlight will be the popular marchas (dancing parades and competitions) that parade up and down the streets in honour of St. Anthony, St. John and St. Peter, to the great delight of the enthusiastic local audience. The tradition of celebrating the Popular Saints is kept very much alive in the Algarve, as is proved by the great number of open-air dances and festivals, where there is always a bonfire and great excitement, resulting in parties that last till dawn, on 13, 24 and 29 June, depending on whether it is St. Anthony, St. John or St. Peter that is being honoured.

Be entertained by the King's and Queens of England. Learn about their passions, foibles and their downfall. Based on extracts from various chronicles, letters and Samuel Pepys diaries, many stories will unfold. From the 1st to the 19th century the entertainment will amuse and move you. The stories will be accompanied by music from the period, played by John Dalton on harp and songs from the era with Margan Meiklem's choral group and the International Choir of Aljezur featuring the well known soprano Birgit Wegemann. There is a new Dutch cafe opening in Albufeira on Saturday, May 31st:

Cafe Rembrandt welcomes all to it´s opening night from 18.00
The cafe is designed along traditional Dutch lines with brickwork and wooden paneling, and although i`ve not seen it I bet there are some carpets on the tables too.
The cafe is Rembrandt van Rijn themed and boasts a specially commissioned copy of the night watch painting above.

Also this weekend,
























On Saturday and Sunday in Olhao, at the fishermans gardens,
by the red brick markets on the seafront, there is a
Portuguese water dog competition.
These amazing dogs have webbed feet and were used by fishermen to gather
fish into nets, a bit like sheep dogs but in water.
Some of these dogs are bred locally in the Ria Formosa nature park,
which in itself is well worth a visit.

Thomas Hartmann and Don Ao fulfilled their dream to live and work in Portugal by recently opening the Bulan Maret Restaurant (moon of March). How about a guided walking tour in the Ria Formosa on Saturday the 17th of May?

This walk sounds really interesting as it is lead by biologist Filipe Moniz and the walk will be looking at the fauna and flora of the Ria. Those of you who know the Formosa will have an idea of what to expect, those of you who don´t will be in for a surprise, as it is teaming with wildlife, flowers, etc.
The Ria Formosa is a lagoon ecosystem running almost from Faro to Villa Real do Saint Antonio,
it is home to many fishermen and women, some of whom collect clams at low water, some farm Oysters and some fish.
Protected by a line of islands and sand banks the Ria is made up of marshes, channels and salt pans and is home to many birds, ducks, flamingos, etc.
What better way to discover this area than in the hands of a biologist?
It is advised that you wear comfortable shoes and suitable clothing and bring some bottled water, a snack, some suncream and a pen and paper and some binoculars if you have them.

This walk is free but has limited numbers, so it may be wise to call beforehand.

49 Clear Reasons to Visit Algarve This Year

This years Blue Flag awards have just been announced and Algarve has been awarded 49 of these eco-label awards.

The Blue Flag is an exclusive eco-label awarded to over 3300 beaches and marinas in 36 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, New Zealand, Canada and the Caribbean.

The Blue Flag Programme is owned and run by the independent non-profit organisation Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

They work towards sustainable development at beaches and marinas through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and other services.

The Programme includes environmental education and information for the public, decision makers and tourism operators.

So, all round good stuff and even better news is the list below.
It details each beach and marina that won a flag and links to a photo of that beach.
Some of the aerial photographs are huge and show a fantastic degree of detail.
The photos also show the different types of beaches in Algarve, the low sand dunes in the east, the coves and caves of the central region and the beautiful rugged west coast.
Have a look around- then decide which beach to visit.
