Irina Kulikova is admired for the rare beauty of her tone and the captivating way she tells stories with her guitar. Even at a very young age, these qualities caught the attention of leading guitarists and critics. When she was twelve, she started her career as a concert artist by touring in Russia and abroad. At fourteen her name appeared in Maurice Summerfield’s book ‘The Classical Guitar, its evolution, players and personalities since 1800’.

Through the years, appreciation of her musical gifts has been underscored by over thirty awards, culminating in 2008 with first prizes in four of the most prestigious international guitar competitions: Michele Pittaluga in Italy, Guitarra Alhambra in Spain, Forum Gitarre Wien in Austria and Iserlohn in Germany. In The Netherlands in the same year, she was awarded the Young Talent, Culture and Podium prize and the first prize of the ‘Twents Gitaarfestival’. A year later, as a laureate of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw’s ‘Vriendenkransconcours’, she was invited for an extensive concert tour in The Netherlands, where she made her home in 2007.

Irina Kulikova graduated with distinction at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg (Austria), the Gnessins Academy in Moscow (Russia) and the Conservatoire of Maastricht (The Netherlands). She has recorded three solo CDs, two of which were released in the Laureate Series of the Naxos label.

She was born in Chelyabinsk, the principal city of South Ural, Russia. She laid the foundations of her sound and phrasing under the guidance of her mother, cellist Vinera Kulikova. Her imagination she inherited from her photographer father, Anatoly Kulikov.

Touring around the globe his repertoire covers a wide array of music styles from early Baroque to Turkish traditionals. Cem has made the choice to play Alhambra Luthier India with a spruce top.

“Amazing Grace” is a Christian hymn with lyrics written by the English poet and clergyman John Newton (1725–1807), published in 1779. With a message that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of the sins people commit and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God, “Amazing Grace” is one of the most recognizable songs in the English-speaking world.

Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any particular religious conviction but his life’s path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by his recalcitrant insubordination. He was pressed into the Royal Navy and became a sailor, eventually participating in the slave trade. One night a terrible storm battered his vessel so severely that he became frightened enough to call out to God for mercy, a moment that marked the beginning of his spiritual conversion. His career in slave trading lasted a few years more until he quit going to sea altogether and began studying theology.

Ordained in the Church of England in 1764, Newton became curate of Olney, Buckinghamshire, where he began to write hymns with poet William Cowper. “Amazing Grace” was written to illustrate a sermon on New Year’s Day of 1773. It is unknown if there was any music accompanying the verses, and it may have been chanted by the congregation without music. It debuted in print in 1779 in Newton and Cowper’s Olney Hymns, but settled into relative obscurity in England. In the United States however, “Amazing Grace” was used extensively during the Second Great Awakening in the early 19th century. It has been associated with more than 20 melodies, but in 1835 it was joined to a tune named “New Britain” to which it is most frequently sung today.

Fineness of the finish and warm color of the various woods, but a closer look reveals lovely details. The tightness and especially the eveness of the grain in the Cedar Top is exceptional. The ‘gold’ appearing inlay in the back is also lovely. All workmanship is flawless.
Headstock design is different and there is green double border inlay emphasizing the beauty of this concert guitar.
The high gloss finish is a kind of smooth and very nice feeling.
