Cecilia Zabala on Alhambra Guitar

Guitarist, Singer, Composer Cecilia Zabala was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1975. Throughout her career, she has expressed her musical creativity using her guitar and her voice, creating original compositions that blend sensitivity, emotion, technique and intuition. Her music draws on a rich mixture of influences, from Argentinian folklore, the contemporary language of the twentieth century, jazz, tango, and Brazilian music.

Cecilia is an active participant in the musical scene of Buenos Aires, with a variety of projects as a performer, composer and arranger. She plays as a soloist and was also a member of several different chamber ensembles, such as the guitar quartet “Cuatro en punto”, the tango group “Mala Junta”, and the duos “Las Morochas” and “Alvarezabala.” With “Alvarezabala”, she released the album “Halo de luz” -2004- (www.alvarezabaladuo.com.ar) and with “Las morochas” she released “Milonga sin palabras” -2005- (www.lasmorochasduo.com.ar) With this duet she made a tour in the U.K., playing at the National Theatre and the Lewes Guitar Festival in 2006.

Her solo recordings highlight her as an original, deep and “feminine” song-writer, a virtuoso guitarist performing the 7 strings guitar. In a tradition of guitarists and writers, her roots are from Atahualpa Yupanqui to the minimalism of Juana Molina. Zabala`s work combines traditional, classical and pop elements. Her first solo recording, “Aguaribay” (indie 2007), mixed Argentinian folklore repertoire with original instrumental and vocal compositions, creating a new sonic landscape. Special guests for this recording include Juan Falú (www.juanfalu.com.ar), Quique Sinesi (www.quiquesinesi.com) and Silvia Iriondo (www.silviairiondo.com.ar). Soon after, Zabala released “Pendiente” (MDR Records 2008) with original compositions and her arragments of works by contemporary composers. Pendiente moves away from pure folk roots to reveal unusual rhythms and unique melodies with contemporary compositions by American-Russian Regina Spektor, Marcela Biasi (Brazil), David Aguilar (México) and Diego Penelas (Argentina). Special guests included Marcelo Moguilevsky (bass clarinet), César Lerner (accordion), Luciano Dyzenchauz (double bass) and Rodrigo Quirós (percussion), among other instrument as soprano sax, violoncello and bassoon.With her second release, Zabala consolidates as an unusual creator, singer and guitarrist.

Since 2006, she has performed at international venues with her duo “Las Morochas” (UK) and as a solo artist in Germany, Switzerland, Spain. In 2008-2009, she was part of “International Guitar night,” a project created by American guitarrst Brian Gore, wherein four internationally renown guitarists offer an evening of their own music, as well as collaborations among themselves. She participated in three different tours – UK, Canada, United States – the last, sharing the bill with renown guitarists Benjamin Verdery (USA), Pierre Bensusan (France) and Brian Gore (USA). In addition to her performance tours, Cecilia Zabala presents workshops and master classes focusing on Argentinian music, songwriting and arragements for guitar.

In 2010, she did her first solo tour in the United States with concerts in New Orleans, New York City and Boston. She also made a recording of her own music with two musicians from Boston, the pianist Joe Deleault (www.joedeleault.com) and the wind player Don Davis (www.myspace.com/dondavis), this album is going to be released in 2011. She also taught master classes on Argentine music for Guitar at the New York City Guitar Society and Yale University. In her forth European tour, in 2011, she introduced her music in new venues in Paris (France), Fribourg (Switzerland) and Leipzig (Germany) and she also tough master classes in Geneva (Switzerland)

The new model is called “Línea Professional” and its construction has been made thinking of all those professionals and students who play the guitar many hours diary.

The most important features are: a new neck’s design which provides better playability and comfort and we have also added the same bracing pattern of the Luthier models. We must say that we have chosen the best woods in order to make this new model and we think it will be a good option for both professional and students.

The Línea Profesional model can be made of solid Spruce or Cedar top and the back and side are made of solid Indian Rosewood.These guitars have a very similar sound and construction to the Luthier India and Rio and are assembled and finished by the master luthiers, Javier Mengual and José Margarít. The neck profile is slightly thinner, so they have a bit of an easier feel to them than do the other luthier models.

We do not yet have stock on these guitars, but do have a shipment on the way and will have stock soon. The demand for these worldwide has been very great, so the supply is limited. If you’d like to reserve one or more, please let me know. We have three in spruce and two in cedar on their way to us.

Several times I had the need for a guitar that can give me everything, also that can be plugged into a sound system and delivers the tone, the real tone, of a nylon string guitar.

It’s recently that I came accross the Alhambra 7PCwe2… and everything I was looking for was there!

Not only it’s a pretty instrument – very nice to hold it in your arms – but very comfortable to play as well. And this little girl can easily compete with big ones. Just watch the video with Serenade Duo. Gerry holds an expensive Dieter Hopf but my little sweet girl has a louder voice and more color. (Sorry Gerry!)

Jose Maria Vilaplana is the head luthier and one of the founding partners of Alhambra, S.L. Although he is deeply involved in maintaining the high quality of their guitars, he continues to work as a luthier, making their top of the line concert classical guitar model for the most demanding professional guitarists, building these with the finest material, totally handmade guitars using traditional methods. First, the beauty is just striking!
Just touching it is a sensual experience, the beautiful finish; I should say the perfect finish, with a French Polish base, is very light, allowing the best wood response.
The high grain quality wood selected make this guitar simply gorgeous.
A refined German Spruce with a silky look, with very tight and regular nodules all across it, attracts the eye right away.
Once we turn the guitar… the Solid Red Peroba let us without voice.

The book matching is perfect the grain appears to create one continuous line, and showcases a dramatic effect.
How many hours did they spend matching it and have a perfect continuous pattern? The purfling itself demonstrates his mastery.

This guitar has an amazingly rich and refined tone. Also, just by moving your right hand finger a millimeter you will get a different sound, just a millimeter!
Can you imagine when you move your right hand from bridge to neck the incredible range of sound you have? It is a gazillion colors palette!!!

The Alhambra 9-P is a wonderful concert model at a sweet price. Thus if you dream playing a great guitar, hand made in Spain and not make your credit card scream, look into this guitar.

The top is made of Canadian Red Cedar, which gives the guitar a warm sound, very Spanish like type of sound. Perfect for classical and romantic music.

Playing pianissimo or huge forte’s: this baby handles it remarkably well.

Warm brassy bass sound. Nice, firm mid-tones and smooth but clear in high tones. The overall sound is full and well balanced. Due to the Indian rosewood, the guitar has a fair amount of sustain and an extremely powerful projection. It really fills the room with a powerful, warm sound. And with proper miking, it’s excellent for performing and recording, producing a well balanced, easy to capture, glowing tones.

The construction of this guitar is similar to the Alhambra 8P and Alhambra 10P, but this model is a bit more dynamical, especially in the upper mid range.
The solid AAA grade Western Red cedar top is meticulously bookmatched and extremely fine grained. Solid East Indian rosewood back and sides are straight grained and quarter sawn for maximum stability and sound reflection. The ebony reinforced Spanish cedar neck features an ebony fingerboard, “lyre” style precision tuners and well finished frets.

The body is wider (107mm) typical of the Madrid school, like Ramirez, to provide a bigger sound when played acoustic.

The neck is 52mm like on a regular classical concert guitar model.
The fingerboard is made of Ebony, and an ebony strip reinforce the neck to keep it straight, light, compact.
Harmonic bar reinforcements arched like a bridge allow the top to vibrate freely and grant this guitar a huge voice.
