Jose Maria Vilaplana is the head luthier and one of the founding partners of Alhambra, S.L. Although he is deeply involved in maintaining the high quality of their guitars, he continues to work as a luthier, making their top of the line concert classical guitar model for the most demanding professional guitarists, building these with the finest material, totally handmade guitars using traditional methods. Just touching it is a sensual experience, the beautiful finish; I should say the perfect finish, with a French Polish base, is very light, allowing the best wood response.

The Alhambra 9-P is a wonderful concert model at a sweet price. Thus if you dream playing a great guitar, hand made in Spain and not make your credit card scream, look into this guitar.

The top is made of Canadian Red Cedar, which gives the guitar a warm sound, very Spanish like type of sound. Perfect for classical and romantic music.

Playing pianissimo or huge forte’s: this baby handles it remarkably well.

Warm brassy bass sound. Nice, firm mid-tones and smooth but clear in high tones. The overall sound is full and well balanced. Due to the Indian rosewood, the guitar has a fair amount of sustain and an extremely powerful projection. It really fills the room with a powerful, warm sound. And with proper miking, it’s excellent for performing and recording, producing a well balanced, easy to capture, glowing tones.

The construction of this guitar is similar to the Alhambra 8P and Alhambra 10P, but this model is a bit more dynamical, especially in the upper mid range.
The solid AAA grade Western Red cedar top is meticulously bookmatched and extremely fine grained. Solid East Indian rosewood back and sides are straight grained and quarter sawn for maximum stability and sound reflection. The ebony reinforced Spanish cedar neck features an ebony fingerboard, “lyre” style precision tuners and well finished frets.

The body is wider (107mm) typical of the Madrid school, like Ramirez, to provide a bigger sound when played acoustic.

The neck is 52mm like on a regular classical concert guitar model.
The fingerboard is made of Ebony, and an ebony strip reinforce the neck to keep it straight, light, compact.
Harmonic bar reinforcements arched like a bridge allow the top to vibrate freely and grant this guitar a huge voice.

While in the United States, Eduardo has won six prestigious guitar competitions, the most recent one being the Alhambra International Guitar Competition in Dallas, Texas in May, 2010. In 2010 Eduardo received third prize at the Guitar Foundation of America competition.

The Tree: Peroba rosa is a tall canopy tree, averaging 100 feet in height in the natural rainforest, with a straight cylindrical bole 2 to 3 feet in diameter. Larger specimens may reach 130 feet, with trunks up to 4 or 5 feet in diameter.

Status: Peroba rosa has been heavily exploited in the past because of its durability, and is now sought because of its beauty. Peroba rosa is becoming increasingly scarce outside of parks and preserves and is now very rare in parts of its original range.

The Wood: Peroba rosa is a very attractive wood, light brown to pinkish to rose-red and often variegated or streaked with pink, purple or brown. The texture is fine to medium and uniform, with a medium luster and straight to interlocking grain. Peroba rosa is moderately heavy, weighing 47 pounds per cubic foot and has a specific gravity of .66. It turns and shapes easily, glues well, and readily takes a high polish. It is stronger than teak and rated very durable.

It’s the story of a young musician who ignores her fate, and pours her anxieties into her songs and her guitar. “I had all these worries and depressions that I wrote down, it was a way of structuring my thoughts”. She turns her doubts into soul, funk and reggae melodies, trying hard to be worthy of her idols, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Bob Marley. She sings in local clubs on the weekend and attends high school during the week. She records in home‐studios, at friends houses, and publishes drafts of her songs on Myspace, without a thought of making a career in music.

What happens next seems almost unreal. Thousands of fans respond to her on the net, attracting the attention of professionals, and the interest of Because Music, which eventually leads to a record deal for the young musician. Then Farhot (Nneka) and Patrice take on the production of her first album. Meshell Ndegeocello stays with her in the studio for two days to produce the track “Mommy”. Cee‐Lo Green agrees to accompany her on a duet and ends up asking her to put the track (“Please”) on his own album. And, last but not least, last autumn Prince offered her a coveted support slot at his show in Antwerp, Belgium.

To put it in a nutshell, in just two years, Selah Sue has fulfilled her dreams. To keep her grounded, she has insisted on keeping the songs she wrote during her teens for her debut album. It’s a way of reminding the world that she has not been unfairly spoiled by destiny and that before Prince, Cee‐Lo Green, radio play and incredible press, there was just a teenage girl, with her guitar, who was chosen spontaneously by fans on the net. For example, her first single “Raggamuffin” is one of her oldest songs and was viewed more than a million times online. “This track symbolizes me” she explains. “It shows my soulful and singing side, but also my hard side, between rap and ragga. When my manager asked me who I wanted to work with, I said Farhot straight away, as I’m a fan of Nneka.

But I also wanted an intimate, dark, melodious record, with light and lively beats. Farhot is crazy about digital sounds and Patrice, who I know well, was the ideal man for the melodious part. They were my two accomplices in the studio.”

Her first album is ambitious. It is a smart melting pot between electric rock, organic hip‐hop and soul‐funk. The twelve tracks shift from poignant ballads like “Mommy” to wilder styles like “Crazy Vibes”. Like Janelle Monae, M.I.A. or Aloe Blacc, Selah Sue belongs to a new generation for whom music has no boundaries. Selah Sue will tour her new record in the Spring.

A Little Bit of a Story
When you hold an Alhambra Guitar in your arms, you hold all of that. When one of my students showed up with an 8-P E2 model electric-acoustic, the first thing that struck me was the beauty of the instrument. Perfect craftsmanship and beautiful woods make this instrument one of the most impressive I have seen.

I called Alhambra and wanted to try the high-end concert models. The good news was: they were to be at the Summer NAMM Show where I went, anxious and excited.

Here they are!
Imagine a huge booth with dozens of amazing guitars exposed! All the guitars I have seen on their website, where I spent hours and hours, were there. My attraction led me to the Luthier Rio Model. I had looked at this guitar for hours on the internet and would finally played one!

Then started the love story with the best guitars I have ever played. This is the love I want to share with you. And the passion too!

My first impression of this guitar was of how easy it is to play both for the right hand in producing good and varied tone colour and for the left in being able to move around the fretboard effortlessly particularly for barre’s.

I had no problems with finger placement or in having to exert pressure for some quite difficult bar chords – a joy to play.

As a player you feel the support beyond the sound, that is, you know that the guitar is projecting very well and that there is plenty more to come.

Trebles sing clearly across the range, particularly the E string, yet still maintain the creaminess that I have come to associate with Alhambra guitars.

This is supported by a rich bass sound which is not overpowering, but balanced. This is an excellent instrument for a developing technique and expanding repertoire.
