Wake Up A Call is the second single from their follow up second album, It Won’t Be Soon Before Long, which details the response to catching one’s lover with another and the accompanying lack of remorse for actions taken. In the song’s video, designed as a film trailer, Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine pays for his murderous response.

Even though the insistent, pounding, keyboard-centered soul-rock approach of the music fits the lyrical intensity of the song well, the question I’m left with is whether Wake Up Call unnecessarily glorifies the violent content of both song and video.

In any case, the song’s still so catchy it gets in your head the first time you hear it!

If you are looking for an album of pure pop pleasure, you can not do much better with current releases than Unbreakable (About.com)

The list goes on. Everybody’s talking how great BSB’s new sixth album, Unbreakable, is. BSB has never done such an exceptional job producing authentic music before. Ironically, it took the departure of former member, Kevin Richardson, on June 2006 for the band to reach this heightened level of surreal music production. I’m not saying he wasn’t an influence, I’m just saying the band’s just doing as good as (and even better than) ever!

So as you can tell, I had a hard time picking out a featured song. Should I have gone with the first single, Inconsolable, which received massive radio playback and which everybody by now have hard, or the less heard, bonus track, Downpour, which I simply fell in love with by the first listen. Well, I chose the latter. Hope you enjoy it :)

Now that I’ve got a copy of the album, I can safely say it falls nothing short of the high expectations placed on this country music singer and Grammy Award winner. For the first time, LeAnn wrote or co-wrote every song on the album. While the album is incredibly personal, LeAnn managed to create music that is incredibly universal.

Doesn’t Everybody is the song I’ve picked to showcase her latest record. In addition to the catchy upbeat rhythm, it does pack a very powerful message in simple words, which is no matter what course of life we choose to pursue, the bottom line is that somehow or another we’re looking for to be loved and cherished. I think if you think about it, that’s what it always boils down to, no matter how high or low life takes us.

The good thing about Bon Jovi though is that you don’t need to introduce him to anyone, since they’re most likely been to one of his 2500 concerts in over 50 countries world-wide, bought one of his 10 studio albums which sold 125 million copies all around the world, or simply heard one of his hit singles being played on radio. So let’s skip the introductions and get right down to it.

Lost Highway is album with a haunting set of 12 new and original sounding songs, is a stunning, multi-layered look into the nature of love and life in all its glory. It focuses on the light that love brings. The first single on this album, Lost Highway, is spectacular song to say the least, both in terms of meaning and melody.

First up on my list, the one and mighty Bruce Springsteen with a hit song from his latest 2007 album, You’ll Be Comin’ Down. To be fair, I said "one" and "mighty" even I haven’t really followed Bruce’s music in the past or even knew of his wide open popularity in the U.S and around the globe. But I came across this album called Magic one day and since I heard his name a lot, I thought I’d give it a try.

Bruce is clearly an established icon in the music community. Thirty-five years as a justifiable rock musician affords Bruce Springsteen incredible number of fans and followers all around the world, and for a good reason.

His music is a cross between rock and heartland rock. What’s heartland rock? Well it’s that kind of rock music that is "characterized by a straightforward musical style, a concern with the average, blue collar American life, and a conviction that rock music has a social or communal purpose beyond just entertainment". In short, it’s a rock music with a purpose. Hmm, I like that!

You’ll Be Comin’ Down is a mid-tempo, head-bopping number with a nice, little sax break swooping in near the end. In this song, Bruce alludes to the young starlets who seem to always be in the news for all the wrong reasons.

She’s an American pop singer, songwriter, and pianist best known for the single “A Thousand Miles” from her debut album, Be Not Nobody (2002). Since then, she’s been on and off with albums that achieved mild commercial success. Well, that’s until October 2007, when she released her third studio album, titled Heroes and Thieves. This is the album I’m bringing you today, and it’s the album I think you will simply fall in love with!

Heroes and Thieves sees Vanessa departing from the Goth-influenced darker stuff she was once loved for in her previous albums. Instead, she has now embraced a more romance-inspired, piano-driven mainstream classic pop that is simply brilliant. A lot of improvements are very apparent in this album. The lyrics are very connective and well-related to people of her generation, and she focuses mainly on just love songs instead of overrated “hater songs” we get so many these days.

My favorite song on the album is the second one, Hands On Me. A beautiful song with a catchy arrangement and heart-warming lyrics.

Another great song (actually it’s Vanessa’s favorite from the album) is called Home. A decent song that really captures the elusive meaning of really being “home”.

In the album’s title song, Heroes and Thieves, Vanessa says it’s a song about assessing, to put it in a dramatic way, the Heroes and Thieves in your life. It is about her personal evolution, and her deciding how she wants to lead her life and the people with whom she wants to share it.

A lot of more fabulous songs in this albums are just a click away, so go ahead and enjoy it. I highly recommend purchasing this album to show Vanessa how much you appreciate her efforts of putting together not just a collection of songs, but a body of work!

It puzzles me why the indie English alternative rock band, Embrace, have not received such world-wide recognition and appeal like similar bands such as Coldplay, Keane and Snow Patrol. To date they have released 5 studio albums. If you were to ask me, I’d say Embrace’s signature style of music, mostly based on piano rock, is a fabulous one that produced some fine collection of mostly amazing and well-crafted songs (check the recommended songs below). In fact, today’s featured song, Nature’s Law, is a true testament to that.

Nature’s Law is the leading single from Embrace’s latest 2006 studio album, This New Day. It was released a week prior to the album release charting at number 2 in the UK Singles Chart, the band’s highest chart entry to date (although there’s some controversy that it should have been a number 1 single).

I remember when this song came out in 2006 and I got to hear the sample in a promotional page for the song, I was completely and utterly hooked to the melody right in the first few seconds. In a way, it’s a sturdy, uplifting song with a powerful message (although one might disagree with the song’s invitation to simply follow "nature’s law", wherever that path might lead you into).

There are also some other fabulous songs in this album, which collectivly contribute to making This New Day one of Embrace’s finest and most successful records to date!

Closer is the first single from their 2007 studio album, The Boy with No Name. I have to admit that very few songs of Travis’s material appeal to me, but this song was an instant favorite when I heard it for the first time. It has a gorgeous chorus melody that’s very heart-warming. Unfortunately, this is about the only song that stands out from their latest album, which forces me to file Travis under "bands with occasional decent records".

The song in this post is from his debut self-titled 2006 album. It’s called A Better Man. It kind of reminds me of my old favorite Robbie William’s song: Better Man. Speaking of whom, Robbie has made a comment that Shayne Ward is on his way to become a "future star". That’s big coming from such a international musical icon.

Overall, I’ll be watching for more to come from Shayne. He really struck a cord with me, and I’m sure he will with you or anybody who appreciates good old pop music full of meaning, melody and passion.

Almost all of the songs in this record are worth posting. However, I had to pick the song that scored the most playback time for me. In this case, it was Swallowed by the Sea.

This song, apart from being a really catchy tune, contains a lot of meaning and symbolism, which can be interpreted in a number of different ways. Personally, this song holds a special meaning for me and that person who walked into my life and "made me realize what I could not see".

I also like the part where he sings:

These simple words tell the story of how we as human beings strive for self-fulfillment through giving and caring. I’m an avid music lover, so I have a knack for spotting parts of songs that would make great ringtones. Since getting my Sony Ericsson K750i in 2004, I’ve been gradually building up a library of personally crafted ringtones.

The process is simple: when I’m listening to a great song and part of it just sounds like a perfect ringtone, I’d launch up my free and trustworthy Audacity. Audacity is a free, open-source audio editing and mixing application. Then I’ll load up the song in Audacity, find the part that seems perfect for a ringtone, cut out either ends and apply fade-in/out as necessary to perfect it.

One of my training instructors was a music lover. He used to play music on his laptop until everybody gathered in the morning. I asked him once if he could recommend any such type of music. I was looking specifically for instrumental music, because as far as Indian singing is concerned:

• I don’t understand a word of it.
• It annoys the hell out of me (I’m talking specifically about those high-pitched female Indian vocalists).

So in the last day of training, the trainer played a beautiful composition that took my breath away. I asked him about the artist and he said it was A. R. Rahman, an Indian internationally renowned musician, best known for composing film scores and soundtracks. The song playing, Bombay Theme, was from the soundtrack of the award-winning 1995 feature film, Bombay. I haven’t seen the movie, but I have seen how enormously talented A. R. Rahman is. I have recently downloaded more of his film scores and he literally blew me away with the sophistication and diversity of his instrumental composition. I also like the fact that he is a converted Muslim (according to his Wikipedia page), which just makes me proud, especially seeing the many achievements he’s made along his career path.

Stripping away the Spanish tracks that are mostly translation of their English counterparts in the same album, the rest of the English songs are so good that I had a hard time picking one to recommend in this post. I didn’t want to post all of the songs because I want you guys to go out and buy the album, because this way we can all show Enrique how we appreciate his hard work and dedication to pleasing his fans.

When I go through an entire new album, there is usually one song that just begs for another listen once you play it the first time. In this case, Enrique’s cover of Ringside’s 2005 single Tired Of Being Sorry was the one to really stand out of the rest. It has a kind of intoxicating upbeat rhythm that is accompanied by beautiful Spanish guitar. However, I really don’t get the message of the song. I think it has something to do with vampires and demons. Quite an odd subject, or is it symbolic for something else? If you have any clue, please do enlighten me :)

I’ve never been a fan of INXS’s punk act during the days of their late frontman Michael Hutchence. That’s why I stopped following their music. However, I recently heard an amazing song on the popular weekly radio show, A State of Trance, that was a progressive trance remix of Afterglow by Randy Boyer. The song immediately caught my attention that I had to hear the original version.

This song is perfect in many ways. First of all, INXS’s new frontman, J.D. Fortune, does a fantastic job portraying the emotions in this song with his talented and beautiful voice. The song itself speaks about a person’s respect for death and need to move on from the sorrow of loss. The lyrics are very touching and the music really drives the mood of the song as close as possible to the listener’s heart. If you’ve ever lost someone, then this song will definitely take its toll on you.

For now, I think I’ll keep playing the song for a long time to come!

I don’t remember how I came to know of her, but I’m glad I did! Anna Ternheim is a Swedish singer-songwriter. She performs in English, and she released her debut album Somebody Outside in 2004. Following the release of the album, she won a Swedish Grammy Award for Best Newcomer, and was nominated for Best Female Artist, Best Lyricist and Best Songwriter 2005.

In September of 2006, she released her second album in Sweden, entitled Separation Road. I have yet to hear this album. Meanwhile, today’s featured song, Shoreline, is a song I really love from her first album.

Shoreline is a cover for a song originally by Broder Daniel. The mellow piano score in this song is just outstanding, and I just love the ending as well.

Simple Plan, the band I’m featuring today, started out aiming at a pure pop-punk record. That’s very evident in their first album No Pads, No Helmets…Just Balls. However, in their most recent studio album, Still Not Getting Any…, they were not limiting themselves to the punk genre, but rather letting themselves write just some "good music".

Indeed, today’s featured song, oddly titled Untitled, falls under this category. The song is notable as one of the group’s more serious songs, and for the salient vocals and piano.

Today’s featured song is from the soundtrack of the immensely popular TV show Alias. I havn’t been able to watch the entire 5 seasons of the show when it was running, so I recently got them and started watching season 1. On the very first episode, a short but catchy song, by the Irish alternative rock band The Cranberries, was featured in a love scene between Sydney (the main character) and her boyfriend.

I looked up the song. It’s called Never Grow Old. It was the first song on The Cranberries’ 2001 record Wake Up and Smell the Coffee (mmm!). Honestly, the lyrics of this song are nothing to write home about. What I mainly like about it though is Dolores O’Riordan’s whisper-like singing voice and the song’s overall chilled-out style.

It’s really a shame the guys in this band went their separate ways in 2003. They had this unique quality in their music that you won’t find in any other band. Some of my best moments in college come back to me when I play back their songs (see recommended songs below).

I vividly remember a night when I was home after a long day of classes and we had a building blackout. Obviously I couldn’t do nothing but lie down and wait. But then I remembered that I copied The Cranberries album to my (then new) Pocket PC mobile. So I turned it on and started playing their songs. Without realizing, my phone’s battery ran out as well, and I risked losing all phone data (because that phone would lose all data if its battery completely runs out). So I had to quickly over to my friend’s place to recharge it. At the end of the day, the album was saved :)

BONUS: Bryan Adams & Sarah McLachlan

Well I’m back with one last installment for the fabulous Canadian musicians series: a duet song by two of the artists we featured previously: Bryan Adams and Sarah McLachlan.

Truth is, I’ve been playing lots of Bryan Adams songs lately ever since I wrote about him. I couldn’t get enough so I went looking for more material and I stumbled by this soundtrack he composed for the animated film that was released in 2002 called: Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

So I went ahead and watched the movie. It’s a pretty decent one that I highly recommend because it’s one of those few movies that (as a reviewer puts it):

In a time when Hollywood is making money by showing our weaknesses, despair, crime, drugs, and war, along comes this film which reminds us the concept of the "Indomitable Spirit". If you are feeling beaten down, this movie will free your mind and set you soaring. We all know how tough life can be, sometime we need to be reminded that persistence and courage will get us through. That’s what this film did for me and I hope it will for you.

Honestly, for me, the soundtrack is also what made this movie even more entertaining. Bryan Adams did an amazing job writing the songs of the movie along with Hans Zimmer. The song I’m featuring today was played in the ending credits along with Bryan’s famous Here I Am. It features background vocals of Sarah McLachlan, who also does a wonderful job of giving the song a much-needed feminine touch.

Day 7: Celine Dion

When I do something, I do it all the way. I’ve been in show business so many years. I’ve achieved a lot of things.

Wow, I can’t believe I made it! What a wonderful week it’s been featuring hit songs from fabulous Canadian musicians. It’s our last day and as you can see, I’ve saved the best for last!

Whether Celine Dion is your favorite one among the other 6 artists we featured this week or not is up to your personal taste, but there is no denying that Celine Dion’s success has spanned space and time, making this Grammy and Juno award-winning pop singer the best-selling female artist in the world!

To me, Celine is an idol. Not that I aspire to be a pop singer, but because she sets an example in following your dream all the way through. In fact, today’s featured song, Immortality, is all about that.

If you take a look and read through Celine Dion’s biography at Wikipedia, you can see how she was persistent working her way up the ladder of fame. She never sat around dreaming of a big hit that would make her instantly famous, she actually worked hard on her voice, look, and even learned English to pursue this career to its full potential. Of course, she had faith in her god-given talent, but that didn’t stop her from putting in the time and reasons to be successful; and boy, has she archived success!

Immortality is a 1998 song that was composed by the Bee Gees brothers especially for Celine Dion. You can hear their voices in the background, adding depth and texture to the chorus. The song deals with having to leave your loved one in order to pursue your dream in life:

Day 6: Bryan Adams

Thoughts are things; they have tremendous power. Thoughts of doubt and fear are pathways to failure. When you conquer negative attitudes of doubt and fear you conquer failure. Thoughts crystallize into habit and habit solidifies into circumstances.

We’re drawing near the end of our week of fabulous Canadian musicians. It’s been a wonderful ride with only two more to go.

I’m really ecstatic today to feature one of my all-time favorite rock singers, Bryan Adams. I can’t quite explain what listening to his music makes me feel, although if I had to narrow it down to one thing, I would say it would be his extraordinary voice which just seems so authentic and real.

Heaven was the song that got me hooked to Bryan’s music. It was (and will always be) an inspiring song that I’ll never grow tired of listening to. However, for our featured song today, I was looking for a less popular (yet just as amazing) song that some of you folks may have not heard yet.

My choice came upon a song from his 1998 album, On A Day Like Today, called Where Angels Fear To Tread. This is chilled-out song with simple yet touching lyrics.

Day 5: Shania Twain

I really feel like life will dictate itself. You should allow it to unfold as naturally as possible. Just go with the flow. When you’re really desperate, you say a few prayers and hope for the best. That’s the way I’ve always lived my life.

I’m really loving this whole fabulous Canadian musicians week-spanning series, especially since it’s the 5^th day of the week and the feedback and attention I’ve been getting are very positive. You guys rock just as well as those musicians do :)

"Would you like that song in red, green or blue, sir?" Wouldn’t that be a fun and odd question to ask?

Well, I thought this would a fun way to introduce today’s song (read on for more about that) from the one and only Shania Twain. I said "one and only" for a reason: Shania Twain (a Canadian country and pop singer) is the only female artisit to have released an album considered to be the biggest-selling album of all time by a female artist and best-selling one in the history of country music!

Numbers don’t lie. If that many people fell in love with Shania’s music, then there has got to be something fantastic and addictive about her music. This is exactly true, especially with her 2002 album, Up!, which is a classical favorite of mine.

What’s really interesting about this album is the number of colors (or variations) in which it’s been released. There are three of them, "green" disc for country style, "red" disc for pop style, and "blue" disc for international style. Since blue is my favorite color and it goes well with my site’s look, I’m going to present today’s featured song, Forever and For Always, in this "color" :)

Forever and For Always was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2004, Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Furthermore, the song was named Song of the Year at both the 2004 BMI Country Songwriter Awards and 2004 European BMI Awards.

However, so many awards don’t do this song justice. Suffice it to know that when I heard this song the first time during my college days, I played continuously for 11 hours (including the time I was sleeping at night!). This song was an instant addiction and the video was just as amazing and heart-warming.

Day 4: Sarah McLachlan

We’re on our fourth day of fabulous Canadian musicians week. I’ve already featured fabulous songs from Michael Bublé, Avril Lavigne and Chantal Kreviazuk. If you’ve missed any of them, go check them out right away!

Today’s featured musician, Sarah McLachlan, needs no formal introduction, because she’s one of the world’s most popular and influential female musicians. She is best known for founding the concert tour that ran from 1997 to 1999 under the name of Lilith Fair, featuring a lot of female musicians. At each Lilith Fair venue, one dollar for each ticket sold was given to a women’s charity in that community.

Sarah’s most notable musicial quality is the emotional sound of her ballads. If you’ve listened to any of her bigger hits, like Angel or Fallen, then you would immediately recognize this very aspect which gained her a massive appeal worldwide.

To illustrate this, today’s featured song is by far the most touching love song I’ve heard in my entire life! I’m not exaggerating that by a single bit! You’ve got to listen to this song to really feel the love that flows through the wonderful lyrics, sung with an ambient, soft voice. If this one doesn’t get you, no other love song will!

Day 3: Chantal Kreviazuk

I think it’s important to really press on with the song writing and just go with it. There’s no code, there’s no craft… it’s just let yourself shine through your music. If it’s meant to be loved and heard, it’ll happen.

It’s the third day of our fabulous Canadian musicians week and I hope you’re enjoying the music we’ve posted so far.

Today I’m featuring an artist who’s a good friend and have worked closely with Avril Lavigne, whom we featured yesterday. Her name is Chantal Kreviazuk, a Canadian singer-songwriter of rock and pop music.

Perhaps what I like most about Chantal are her two songs which I’ve played countlessly for as long as I can remember: Feels Like Home and Leaving on a Jet Plane. That’s why I was keen on checking out her newest album that came out in August last year, called Ghost Stories. The album, produced entirely by Kreviazuk’s husband at home, does not have a single guitar on any of the tracks. But then again, who needs a guitar with such beautiful piano score!

Speaking of piano, I think you’re going to love today’s featured song: All I Can Do. The piano riff in this standout song emerges first and provides a foundation for an utterly captivating melody. With great lyrics that she delivers with greater emotions, it’s no surprise that this song was chosen to be the lead single for the album, and received mass radio playback that put Chantal back on the map after her 4 years of absence.

Day 2: Avril Lavigne

I think, you know, my parents really saw that I was really into music and that kinda caused I get a bunch of instruments. So growing up I had drums around, guitar and piano and I learnt how to play all those.

For the second day of our fabulous Canadian musicians week, Avril Lavigne is taking the stage with a song from her latest 2007 record The Best Damn Thing, called Innocence.

Although she is a very successful artist having won numerous awards during her relatively short career so far, I somehow can’t force myself to be into this whole pop-rock or punk act that dominates most of her work. However, that’s not to say that I completely despise all of her work. I have several favorites that I will always love listening to when the mood strikes me.

That’s actually the nice thing about Avril. In every record she releases, you’d be sure to find a song or two that are really on the "easy-listening" side.

I think Innocence here can be classified as one. With this song, Avril is trying to paint a picture of a life one would have if one day she wakes up and returns back to childhood-like innocence. This kind of life is characterized by focusing on the little things that make life so great. I think the message here is that we should slow down every now and then and take a moment to appreciate those little things and the "state of bliss" they bring along.

Day 1: Michael Bublé

My grandfather was really my best friend growing up. He was the one who opened me up to a whole world of music that seemed to have been passed over by my generation. Although I like rock & roll and modern music, the first time my grand dad played me the Mills Brothers, something magical happened. The lyrics were so romantic, so real… the way a song should be for me. It was like seeing my future flash before me. I wanted to be a singer and I knew that this was the music that I wanted to sing.

It’s the first day of our week-spanning series of fabulous Canadian musicians, where I’ll be featuring my all-time favorite songs from those amazing artists and song-writers. In total I have 7 artists coming up, and today I’m starting with someone I already featured previously: Michael Bublé (pronounced "Boo-blay").

To give you a little idea of who Michael Bublé’ is, his smash hit song "Home" was the most-heard song on Canadian radio in 2005. In 2006, he won 4 Juno Awards for "Best Singer," "Best Album" for It’s Time, "Best Artist," and "Best Pop Album of the Year" for It’s Time as well.

Today’s song is the first single from his latest 2007 album Call Me Irresponsible. Titled Everything. Like I stated previously, the best thing about Michael Bublé that makes you fall in love with his songs is his baritone voice that delivers such depth and texture to the song.

That's why I had a hard time picking out a song to feature on my blog. I have several favorites that are always there in my iPod (check out some of my recommendations at the end of this post). Finally, I've decided to feature a song from their latest album, called Whatever Gets You Through the Day. The song's titled (I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be) Free.

There are so many things to love about this song. First of all, the song deviates from the usual "love" subject into more of "peace for the world" and "human rights" cause.

Secondly, the song has a beautiful arrangement that starts really mellow and quite, builds up the mood through two verses, and reaches its crescendo with a full-tilt captivating gospel choir. Simply beautiful!

I think that particularly applies to a movie I've seen lately. It's called Employee of the Month. It focuses on events that happen at a Costco-like store (and indeed filmed in a Costco store), where two co-workers, Zack (Dane Cook) and Vince (Dax Shepard), compete for the affection of the new cashier, Amy (Jessica Simpson). The script is very badly written, it's really neither a comedy nor a love story.

However, somewhere towards the end of the plot, a song got played that really caught my attention. Looking it up afterwards, it turns out to be one by a band I've never heard of called Highwater Rising. The song is called Wasted Days.

I dug up the whole Internet looking for this song but couldn't find it. So I looked up the song on Last.fm and requested it from some of the people who recently listened to it. Never thought it would work, but I got a message back from a lovely person who uploaded the song for me and sent me a link. What a lovely gesture!

So here is the song. I think you'll pretty much enjoy it. It's pretty laid back and easy to listen to. I especially love the guitar and drum works on this one.
