Podcast art work by Carla Wherby, Michael Jackson, 2010. Carla Wherby often employs biro and texta on paper to create detailed montages with imagery borrowed from media and popular culture. She has been awarded a scholarship to attend the National Art School and visit the War Memorial in Canberra to study war objects, memorabilia and ephemera.

Carla’s current work is being exhibited as part of Framing Gravity, a national exhibition of excellence by artists who experience disability, presented by Accessible Arts.  21 October – 5 November 2011 at SCA Gallery, Sydney.

After touring extensively, including the National Gallery in Canberra, the University of Woollongong, and the Arthouse in Melbourne, Buttress took the new songs she’d been trying out on audiences (like ‘Dexodus’ and ‘I Like’) and placed them alongside live experiments with AudioMulch (with source material ranging from Guns N Roses, to Crystal Waters, to Wu Tang Clan), as well as several pieces she’d composed for other projects (including ‘Some Assembly Required’s 50/50 compilation). Continues in her fine tradition of straddling the line between breakcore, mashup, and pure dada. 100% Interwebmegalink-approved.

Between the years 1999-2007 I produced a number of experimental radio shows on 4ZZZ 102.1FM in Brisbane.  In order to avoid the monotony of bland DJ tracklist reproduction I would often use my laptop and Audiomulch software to mix and mash tracks with a variety of sound effect cds.

Having collected the results it became clear to me that my manipulations and choices were working perpetually towards a form of plotless abstract horror soundscape.  Here then is a directors cut of sorts, newly remixed to form an almost seamless scape of ancient mysteries and unknowable terror.

Secret Killer of Names is the nom de plume of media artist and researcher, Lloyd Barrett.  He records original music as Secret Killer of Names and has a blog covering his research into and experiments with Audio Visual performance

His production work includes ambient soundscapes and quirky minimal techno, both heavily laden with found sounds and field recordings.

“This mix is a narrative of the overnight shore leave of a military sailor in a large, mysterious city. Typically I would not include more than one track from any given artist, but given the goal, I leaned on a few artists who’s output was optimal in narrating the story. Nary a track was played in it’s entirety, and almost every track has a significant amount of overlap or slices meshed with the surrounding tracks- several chunks of tracks were even played at the same time. The mix begins and ends with work from Alvin Curran, a sound artist who hails from my home state of Rhode Island. Much of the music I selected is from New York artists, fittingly, with the notable exception of a musicians few from Vermont, San Fransisco, Moroco, and Germany” – John Foley.

So prolific was John Watermann, that in 1991 he began releasing cassettes of his music under a number of aliases, including Total Disease, Radio Mull, and Spinal Machine, on his label Nightshift Records.

‘Scraping It Hard’ was Watermann’s first release as Spinal Machine. Its four tracks range from minimal electronics, to cutups, to soundscape manipulations.

Christmas *special* by Shane Jesse Christmass aka Mattress Grave.

Mattress Grave is the musical and sound permutation of Shane Jesse Christmass, the Perth-born, Melbourne-based writer.

In 2006 Christmass was runner-up in The Age Short Story Competition with his entry Remaking the Image of the World, and in 2008 he published an anthology of his short stories, Croak & Grist (Paroxysm Press). He has published a number of stories including Cold to the Point Past Death, (Red Cent Publishing, 2010), The Charnel Stink Within, (Mini Shots, Vignette Press, 2008), The Arvo & Early Evening of the Axe, (10 Years that Didn’t Kill Us, 2008, Paroxysm Press).

Other fiction work has featured in the journals New Wave Vomit, LIES/ISLE, amphibi.us, Cordite, one-eight vulture, dotdotdash and The Diamond & the Thief, as well as sound poetry in the Atlanta journal, As Long As It Takes. He also edits the journal Queen Vic Knives. He just completed his first public reading of his screenplay, Orderly, at the inaugural Lion Pie Laboratory in Sydney.

While i’m never short of ideas, both aural and visual, i’ve always found that a positivist approach rarely results in art I really feel like owning. The tracks on “ITACIDTWATQ” were originally developed as the audio component of a live AV performance. The equanimity with which I applied these sounds to each other and to vision encouraged a constant evolution of both sound and image. Trying to nail all this down to a form that I can then retire seems antithetical to an open evolutionary work. I have been mixing this material for 4 months now, and it sounds different every time I hear it, but it is time I set this iteration free to play with you. This is a dynamic snapshot that will allow you to paint your own picture.

A prescription for the enhancement of oneirological pursuits, be it art, reading, sleep, or a free three-quarter hour meditation in an unlit space. It evolves and so will you.

Gentleforce is Sydney artist Eli Murray. Eli has been a dj and promoter in the underground dance movement for over ten years now. He released his debut album Sacred Spaces in 2010 on Feral Media. Since then he has kept himself busy doing several sound/visual projects including designing the cover for Cyclic Defrost Magazine (Issue 26) as well as co-creating a audio/visual installation titled “Dusk” for the Underbelly Arts Project as part of angryPixel collective. The latest collaboration has seen Eli remixing music for Textile Audio aka Eve Klein a talented opera singer. You can see more of Gentleforce’s works at http://gentleforce.angrypixel.org.

Wayne Funnel is a freelance Science/Historical Correspondent with ABC Radio Australia. His illustrated talks are also regularly broadcast during The Night Air, the cult “listening for pleasure” program heard from 8:30 pm on Sunday evenings on ABC Radio National.

For this 11:11 podcast Wayne has prepared an especially extended admixture of his unique commentary interspersed with surprisingly entertaining musical items.

N.B. Lloop (aka Rich Panciera) moved to NYC in a band with Douglas Israel in 1990. He got involved with Lalalandia in the crazy Williamsburg Brooklyn scene, worked at and helped build Bassmind studios, was a member of We™, co-founded Share NYC & Share Wien (share.dj), and now starting Sonephon.com very very soon.

Blind (Canberra, AUS)

Blind (aka David Finig) is a pharmacy assistant, writer and theatre-maker dwelling in Canberra, Australia. Since 2001, more than twenty of David’s full-length and one-act playscripts have been produced for seasons by companies in Australia, the Philippines and the United States. David was 2006 Writer-in-Residency with Tanghalang Pilipino, the key government-funded theatre company in the Philippines, and his work continues to be produced by theatre ensembles and festivals in Manila. David works with cross-artform ensemble Boho to devise and present interactive performances based on Complex Systems science and Game Theory. Boho productions A Prisoner’s Dilemma (2007-08) and Food for the Great Hungers (2009) have toured to theatres, museums, science conferences and festivals throughout Australia.

David co-directs the Crack Theatre Festival, a national festival and forum for performing artists which takes place annually in Newcastle as part of This Is Not Art, Australia’s largest media arts festival.

The battery of noises encased in this podcast come from a few key sources: flickering madly between stations on the FM dial of a handheld radio; collaborations with a range of musicians and sound artists; tunes recorded with Diplodocus, a trio featuring Paul Heslin (laptop, processes), Chris Finnigan (guitar, FX) and my self (words); and finally, SUN DRUGS.

Sun Drugs is a grimy teen romance set in the flooded streets of epidemic-ridden Manila following the efforts of hip brothers Mouth and Throat to turn art-class geek Alexis Cobweb into prom queen in the space of one week. All the sweeping romance of The English Patient and the sassy dialogue of Mean Girls crammed into half an hour and microwaved, including a DIY-vibrator making workshop. Sun Drugs was nominated for Best Solo Show in the 2010 New Zealand Fringe Festival.

Podcast: Emerge Outside

Jacqui O’Reilly is a singer/songwriter from Sydney, Australia. Emerging from the folk underworld into new electronic music by way of passion, projects and people, Jacqui has prepared the Emerge Outside podcast.

The podcast features a thirty minute improvised soundscape that was recorded live at the Emerge Outside performance at Performance Space, CarriageWorks in Sydney. Emerge Outside, a project conceived by Jacqui O’Reilly and Randolf Reimann (Tra La La Blip), was built on the notion that hidden outside mainstream society, people exist with a passion for music making, who often do not get a chance to inhabit a creative space, or access new technologies and artistic processes, due to social and physical barriers systemic in our society.

The project engaged nine people with and without a disability in a two day music making workshop. Using found sounds, modern synthesis techniques and a quadraphonic sound system, the group created an immersive journey into sound.

Also included in the podcast are tracks by Huw Lewis (Emerge Outside project); Sarah Bock (Press Eject/Emerge Outside project); Pumice (NZ) with his cover of Chris Knox song Grand Mal from 1989; a Daniel Johnston cover by The Ghost of 29 Megacycles (WA) and an Outside Remix by Randolf Reimann with Jacqui O’Reilly on vocals.
