Pastel Princess.

Looking in the shops at the moment you can't help but miss the coming trend of springtime pastels, i'm not going to lie at first I wasn't all too keen. Mainly down to many of the colours i'd seen being pastel versions of neon colours which I think look cheap and tacky. I'm glad to slowly see nice pastel colours are finally coming into the shops that are more wearable and don't hurt my eyes.

Here are some of my favourite pastel coloured pieces.

All from asos.com

Boohoo.com

2012-03-20T07:22:00.000-07:00

I've never really been that interested in the clothes on boohoo before, its never a website that i've spent time on. However I decided to have a little browse and was surprised at how many pieces I actually liked. I tend not to buy clothes online very often as I am always wary about sizing/quality but i've heard so many good things about Boohoo i've a feeling I may be purchasing something from them in the very near future.

Here are some of my favourite trends.

1. Ama Vintage Floral Denim Hotpants

2. Cora Scallop Edge Jersey Vest

3.Kirsty Strappy Aztec Swing Top

4. Layla Spotted Scallop Top

5. Lollie Ribbed Bodycon Skirt

6. Mandy Tie Dye Hotpants

7. Sindy Floral Print Cotton Shorts

I have Youtube!

2012-03-12T12:47:00.000-07:00

I decided to make a new youtube account as the one I was using was full of old embarrassing videos from my young teen's and I couldn't quite bring myself to delete them, so I decided to make a new account for "vlogging" - trying to figure out how to connect it to this account but apparently it doesn't like gmail :/

Apologies for my awkwardness in front of the camera, i'm still finding it a little weird talking to my macbook.

Ellen Rogers

The film, the hand colouring, the flowers, multiple exposures, the gorgeous often topless girls.

Whats not to love?

I really cannot get enough of Ellens work, I love how much it reminds me of old fashioned photos, I love how unusual the props used and the post production of the images to create a very eery, magical, dreamy style of photography.

Its a perfect match, it sums be up beautifully, i've been after a camera necklace for ages and I finally have a gorgeous little one.

Maurizio Anzeri - Photograph Embroidery

2012-01-13T08:37:00.000-08:00

"Maurizio Anzeri's unusual working process brings together found photographs and embroidery. Using portraits from the 1930s and 1940s collected at flea markets, Anzeri overlays abstract designs by sewing intricately patterned threads directly onto the photographic surface. Obscuring part of the photograph he both hides and heightens certain features of the face. His precise juxtapositions transform the discarded image, giving his portraits a disquieting and psychological presence." - The BalticMill.com

I absolutely loved this exhibition and how the artist uses old found photographs, something that since seeing this exhibition I have began collecting myself. I find old images like this really fascinating, especially when found at flea markets sitting in a basket selling for 50 pence each. At times I find these images quite sad as these were real people who once walked on this earth and this documents their existence, their memories, and now they’re forgotten about and out there available for anybody to purchase for such a small price.

I find the way in which Maurizio Anzeri has altered these images with embroidery really fascinating. He’s taken quite traditional, some quite glamorous, stylized photographs and added a very modern and abstract spark to them to create these really unusual pieces of art. I especially like the way in which in many of the images he focuses on one part of their face, such and an eye, and frames it with patterns of thread and ribbons. Many of the images reminded me of aliens as many of the shapes created by the embroidery deform the faces of those in the photograph. I really found this work inspiring as i'm looking into the idea of creative ways to "deface" images.

Saga

I've been a big fan of Saga's work for quite a while now and I just couldn't resist doing a little blog post featuring some of my favourite of her images. Her creative and quite extravagant style is something I love.

Photography inspiration.

2012-01-06T08:43:00.000-08:00

I've recently hit a brick wall with my university work and i'm in need of some inspiration. The way in which my course is set out is we don't have photography "projects" we simply have to create a body of work and have total freedom on what we do. This structure was completely different to every other occasion in which i've studied photography so i'd be lying if I said it was an easy transition. Many other of my classmates also struggled with this coming from A-level and foundation courses having the structure of being set projects is what we are used to. Our tutors told us not to worry too much about having a wonderful initial idea and we shout just "shoot" and see where it goes, so thats what I did. I went down the route of "documentary street photography" simply taking photographs on my canon a-e1 which i'd recently gotten a hold of. Unfortunately the camera had a fault and many of my images were full of light leaks and the film had been fogged. This then led to the idea of serendipity and "happy accidents" I started experimenting with pin hole photography and film photography in a more creative way. This I really struggled with due to being at university all day and the amount of available light around this time of year being quite limited i've completely lost all motivation. I've barely taken any photographs and I feel working in such a way is really holding me back, theres only so many photographs you can take of people in the city centre without wanting to slit your wrists.

I'm craving conceptual photography, I miss having an idea in my head, planning it out, finding the props for it and setting up the image like I used to with my old self-portraiture. I miss that feeling of pride when all the effort into creating an image has finally paid off. Therefore i'm having a change of direction and i've been scouring the internet for some inspiration to get my started again.

The distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion

A few weeks ago now I was visiting my Grandma and we sat looking through box upon box of old photographs she has of her and my Grandad, my mum and my auntie when they were growing up and ever the odd one of me when i was little. I'd recently become increasingly interested in old photographs, I've even started collecting some from markets and antique shops because I find them so fascinating. Some of them are so sad that they are somebodies memories sitting there for anybody to buy for 50p.

Grandad and Grandma on their wedding day. They were 20 and 19 years old. How scary is that?

My Grandad ages around 15 with his friends at Butlins.

Check out how gorgeous my mums kitten Fluffy was? I want her!

This has to be one of my most favourite photographs of my Mum and my Grandad.

Goodbye 2011 hello the future.

2011: I dyed my hair Vivienne Westwood Orange. I fell in love. I received grade distinction in my foundation course. I dyed my hair back to blonde. I went to Edinburgh Zoo for best friends birthday. I visited Liverpool. London. Barcelona. I started University. Made some amazing new friends. Had the most amazing Halloween ever. I laughed a lot. I cried a lot. I had the best year of my life.

So 2011 is officially over and i've got to say I am sad to see it go but 2012 has begun and i'm determined to make it as good, if not better than 2011. I've so many things to look forward to within the next year, seeing Florence and the Machine and Panic! at the disco in concert, moving out and living with my university friends and whatever else the year decides to throw at me.I decided this year instead of making the typical New Year resolutions that i'm not likely to ever stick to i've written myself a list of small things i'd quite like to achieve, a year long bucket list if you will. I've not got a lot on my list at the moment but i'm going to continue to add to it as the year progresses.

Sell a piece of artwork
Carry a camera around with me every single day and take as many photographs as possible
Say yes more
Try and set up an etsy shop and sell things
Decide on a tattoo design
Learn as many new things as possible (watch lots of youtube how to videos)
Have my work in an exhibition
Revamp my image - people often think I'm 16 when i'm almost 20
Pass my first year at university
Get a job so I can afford to eat next year
Be a better friend

Merry Christmas!

2011-12-27T14:08:00.000-08:00

Merry Christmas to you all. I hope you had a lovely day, I certainly did. My brother came home for Christmas which is a present within itself as I don't get to see a lot of him since he moved to Sheffield for University 4 years ago. Like always my Grandma came over to our house to spend Christmas day with us and it was lovely. I got so many beautiful gifts, my main present being a 50mm 1.8 lens which is the most amazing thing I have ever owned in my life. I can't stop taking photographs with it (all these photographs were taking using that lens) Other things I got included wine, perfume, a dressing gown, a few DVD's, a huge load of books, a lens mug, a camera necklace, chocolates etc etc.

I couldn't get a 50mm 1.8 lens and not have some out of focus christmas light photos.

Christmas dinner was gorgeous, instead of crackers mum got everybody a little table present and we all got different types of tea, how very British.

We don't really do a lot on boxing day but this year we had a small get together and had some of the family around for drinks and nibbles which was lovely, and then my cousin came up to visit with her three sons who are gorgeous. We took them to the beach today and it was so much fun.

Merry Christmas!

I hope you're all well, apologies for my lack of blogging recently i've been a little preoccupied with other issues at the moment but I promise come January I shall get back to blogging properly! It'll be one of my resolutions.
