Prevent Virus Made Autorun.inf with Super Autorun

Continuing the previous posts about the flashdisk protection with dummy files and flashdisk with NTFS format, this time will be followed regarding protection engineering or flash drive from a virus or a program that will create Autorun.inf file, with a simple program Super Autorun. Thus expected to reduce the spread of the virus.

Previously I had doubts about the effectiveness of this method, because it thinks it's easy for a virus to change, delete and create a new autorun.inf file.

Most of this information I can after reading one blog post WinPowerTips. Indeed, with only create autorun.inf files only, although the hidden attribute system will be easily overcome by the virus. But there is described with three levels and the results are not easy to remove the files and viruses that try to create Autorun.inf file in the normal way will fail.

In the following brief description of three levels (stages) prevents the virus to create / modify the file Autorun.inf:

Preventing the virus makes autorun.inf file by creating an Autorun.inf folder. Because if this folder already exists then the Autorun.inf file will not be created.
Preventing virus remove Autorun.inf folder (the usual way) by adding Unicode files in it. This method can actually make the virus an error or shut down if the programmer does not cope well.
Prevent users Deleting Autorun.inf folder with Folder indelible. Such as Microsoft's own explanation that sometimes we can not delete the file/folder name if the name contains invalid (defective).

Nevertheless with 3 levels and even then, if the virus (the virus) jelly then the virus could still handle it and still be able to make an Autorun.inf file to infect him.

Super Autorun

The blog provided vbs files (visual basic script), to create Autorun.inf folders and folders that do not [easily] erased (stages 1 and 3) for phase 2 (make file unicode) we have to make your own.

After reading the article, I tried googling further information (details) about this, and finally I tried (inspired) to create a simple, small and easy to use anyone in this regard. The result? Super Autorun.

The file size is only about 24 KB, no need to install. As the name implies, aims to create a folder/file specifically, to prevent viruses (easily) create, modify or delete the Autorun.inf file. This file uses special techniques, so it is not easy to erase, rename or modified by a virus. For unicode file creation, not included in this program.

Uses Super Autorun

The program is very easy to use, just run the file, then select the drive that will be targeted or choose "Select all drives" to select all the drives, and then click Create Autorun.inf, If there is already a file/folder Autorun.inf then the program will try immediately delete, and create new ones. If it is successful, please try to delete, rename, edit, open the folder in any way.

So basically, this program will create a folder Autorun.inf is not easily removed, renamed or modified, so that viruses or other programs can not create Autorun.inf file.

In order to succeed, the drive or the flash to be made must be of type NTFS. For flash, because the default Windows Explorer does not have a menu to format NTFS, can read my previous article: Tips on formatting the Flashdisk with NTFS File system.

Note: This technique is not to prevent the virus from duplicating themselves into flashdisk, just to prevent virus build an Autorun.inf file, so it does not spread to computers without our knowledge. Maybe the future can be discussed thoroughly by incorporating protection making of dummy files protected with Super Autorun to protect the flashdisk. Protects USB Flashdisk from Virus with Dummy File

As already known, flashdisk is a passive media, so any program installed in it will not be running (active) alone in the absence of the operating system. Although antivirus installed, will not effectively protect itself if used on a computer that has been infected with virus.

One way to protect flashdisk from virus is to create a dummy file in it. What is a dummy file and how to make it?

Dummy file meant here is the file creation or "puppet file" whose contents can be anything or even empty. The important thing is size corresponds to the size of memory/space left in flashdisk. That way, flashdisk will be filled with data and there is no empty space inside.

With its full flashdisk (no free space), then it will not be added automatically or write the data, including any modification of files can not be (as if there is a feature write-protected). So this could be an alternative way to prevent (reduce the chances) virus infecting/duplicate itself to flashdisk. Then if we want to use to save the file, then we just delete the dummy file.

Creating dummy file with Command Prompt

In Windows, we can use the tool named fsutil. Fsutil it has many functions, one of which to create a new file with a specific size. To make the file size of the free space available, then follow these steps:

Previously, to find out how much free space is available, right-click the drive (flashdisk) and select Properties. It would seem the size of the space that is still available in bytes (Free Space).

Open Command Prompt (All Programs> Accessories> Command Prompt)
Type the following command

fsutil file createnew "D:\file-dummy.dat" 1234567

After that, press Enter, it will display information have created a dummy file

Explanation: D:\file-dummy.dat a file to be created (if there are spaces, use quotation marks) and 123456 is the size of the file to be created. If successful, the file will be generated with the size that has been entered and the process is relatively very fast.

Want an easier way?

If you want a more convenient way and do not need to know how much free space is available or hassles using Command Prompt, use this simple and small program Dummy File Maker (18 KB). Easy enough to use, such as the following explanation:

Run Dummy File Maker on the location where the files will be created dummy, for example in flashdisk.

Fill in the desired file name or click the "Random" to create a random file name.
Select the option "Using all the free space in current drive" to make the file size according to the space available.
Select "Place the file in a sub folder" if you want to put files in sub-folders according to file name
Click the create button
Done..

Note: If the size of the file you want to create (free space) is very large (possibly hundreds of MB or more than 1 GB), it is better made dummy files are small. Because it may be seemingly windows explorer hangs when accessing files are quite large.

This method does not guarantee completely safe, because it could be virus delete files on flashdisk and infected. But this way at least we can reduce the risk of virus infected flashdisk or the data filled by the program or anyone else. If flashdisk already has a feature write-protected with switches, buttons, etc., then use these features would be better.

Tips to Formatting Flashdisk with NTFS File system

Most of us probably rarely notice the type of Flashdisk file systems used belonged to us, whether it is NTFS, FAT32 or FAT. To find out the file system being used, right-click the Flashdisk in Windows Explorer and select Properties. There looks File System type used.

But when we would try to format via Windows Explorer, perhaps there are only menu FAT32 and FAT and no NTFS. How do I format NTFS and what is the difference with FAT32 and FAT?

Why NTFS?

NTFS is the file system format after the latest Windows FAT32, and has several advantages such as the ability to store additional information about files / folders (metadata), security features, data compression, better structure and more.

In addition, NTFS can be used to format a larger size, for only 2 GB FAT, FAT32 8 TB (8,000 GB), while NTFS can be up to 16 EB (16 million TB). Yet still there are shortcomings NTFS, such as unreadable in Win9x and processes of reading and writing to disk more frequently.

Because each file / folder store more information (metadata), then the process of reading and writing each file/folder will more often than FAT32 or FAT type, so to flash, affect the life (durability). Enabling NTFS format in Windows Explorer

We could format the USB stick with NTFS with the help of HP USB Format Tools. But in fact Windows Explorer can do it. To enable it to follow the steps below

Open System Properties by right-click My Computer > Properties (or keyboard buttons Win + Break)
Go to the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button
Select Disk Drive and select the format that you want to Flashdisk with NTFS, right click, select Properties.
Once open select the Policies tab
Select Optimize for performance and click OK

After that try to right click the flash drive in Windows Explorer and select the Format menu, then there should have appeared NTFS File System.

To note is when this option is enabled, any repeal flash should always be through the Safety Remove Hardware. If there is an option "Optimize for quick removal" is actually the flash can then immediately removed, without the Safety Remove hardware

Test between NTFS, FAT32 and FAT

I have tried multiple comparisons (especially the process of copying the data) with different types, and the results are as follows:

- Copy 11 files (each about the size of 170 MB) totals about 1.8 GB

NTFS 4:44 (4 minutes 46 seconds)

FAT32 5:09 (5 minutes 9 seconds)

FAT 04:46 (4 minutes 46 seconds)

- Copy 1,297 files (sizes between 1 KB to 23 KB) with a total of 8.23 MB

NTFS 29 seconds

FAT32 56 seconds

FAT 58 seconds

- Capacity after format

NTFS 2,038,044,672 bytes Used space is 12,937,216 bytes (12.3 MB)

FAT32 2,046,959,616 bytes Used space is 4096 bytes (4.00 KB)

FAT 2,050,686,976 bytes Used Space 0 bytes

Looks copying data with NTFS, relatively quickly, but after the format size is slightly smaller because it needed additional space for larger files/folders (metadata). If the flashdisk is often used for reading and writing process and do not require NTFS features, such as data security, then choose the type of FAT32 would probably be better.

No doubt that the flashdisk currently the most frequently used media stores data that is easy to carry anywhere. But little attention to the use of flashdisk is a problem. Perhaps because of its capacity to Giga, then all the data is entered, and at any time in the computer like a mini hard drive. The only way seems to encrypt the data on the flash disk. A flashdisk with another flashdisk have different speeds and ages. One more tips when buying a flashdisk, do not just look at the price, but also guarantee, if a little more expensive but longer warranty, then choose a longer warranty. May be useful.

Sysinternals: free utilities

For those of you who frequent tinkering troubleshooting windows including errors, virus, memory usage, slow computers and etc., would be familiar with the software from sysinternals.

One program that is very useful is autorun, which can be used to detect whether there is a virus or a program that runs when windows start. Another program is the Process Explorer that berfungis like Task Manager but with many advantages. In addition there are more than 60 Free utilities are certainly useful for beginners to advanced users.

Sysinternals web site was made in 1996 by Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell to put their skills on system utilities and technical information. Perhaps because of their great ability, as is the case with most developers, Microsoft eventually recruit them in July 2006. The Flashdisk Data can not be opened? Solved virus VBS Shortcut

A few days (weeks), I have been receiving a lot of 'patients' were exposed to the virus (worm to be exact). Laptop and flash relatives, neighbors and friends turned out to be much affected by the virus, which after checking, it turns out all kind of virus. All data on the flash can not be opened or suddenly 'disappear' from view.

When the USB drive is inserted into a computer that is infected with the virus, just all of the data in the flash is turned into a shortcut and the data in it 'disappeared'. After the check turns out to all affected by the virus (worm) that is identical (same), which is a small script which is a program code in Visual Basic (Visual Basic Script or VBS).

This worm name change and using a random name, for example arejwygjro..vbs, uwpkhsaqup..vbs and others. When the virus is already running on your computer, so no flash is included, all files and folders in it will be hidden (hidden), and a shortcut will be replaced with the same name as the file name and the folder contents of the flash, so for those who are less observant feel flashdisk safe. Do not forget it also copies the virus itself (a vbs file) with random names as I have mentioned.

Eradicate the virus VBS

This virus is actually quite easy to remove, just follow these steps, and make sure the Autoruns program is already on the computer and place it in the location that will be easy to open, for example, drive D: or C:. do as follows:

Restart the computer, and then press the F8 key repeatedly until a lot of options to get to a computer (Windows)
Select "Safe Mode". Guide to get into Safe Mode can also be read in my previous writings Safe Mode, Benefits and Uses.
After successfully entering Safe Mode, if the user's choice, first select Administrator (usually without a password).
Once inside the windows, looking Autoruns program that previously had been prepared, and run.
Select the tab "Logon" and see the list of files that a VBS file. Delete all the vbs file from the list (or if you do not want to remove, it could also just unchecking it in order not to automatically run on your computer)
Once completed, before entering Safe Mode if there are multiple users other than the administrator, repeat steps 1 through 5 for the other users.
After that, restart the computer again, this time let the computer go into a normal state (not safe mode) and should no longer active virus on the computer. If previously removed from Autoruns not open again autoruns and remove from here (unless you want collect it).

Why should of Safe Mode? because of the safe mode, the virus will not be active, so it is easy to remove or disable access to it. To make sure the computer is no longer the file, the search can be done with the file extension to *.vbs. But keep in mind that not all vbs file is a virus, so be careful not to carelessly delete. This virus usually uses random names and the amount is above 100 KB or thereabouts.

Restoring data in the USB flash

Once the computer is clean from viruses, then the next step is to remove the virus and restore the data in the flash if any. The first step is to remove the virus and the shortcut on the flash, then restore the data.

Hold down the SHIFT key on the computer / laptop and insert the flash. Pressing and holding the SHIFT key is for security, ensuring that no program in flash that directly executed without the user's knowledge (autorun.inf).
After that delete all files and folders, which are shortcuts (please see the TYPE column in Windows Explorer). Make sure that the shortcut is removed, and no mistake doing double click (open shortcut).

To restore all the data hidden viruses, can use my creation program "Hidden Files Tool" or directly via the Command Prompt. Please select one or if the Hidden Files Tool there is not successfully displayed (for example filenames using unicode letters: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, etc.) can be added using the Command Prompt.

Using Hidden File Tool, click the Browse button and select the flash drive. Then click the - = SEARCH = -. Once the results are displayed, select all the items (click on the top file, press and hold down SHIFT and click the last file). Then click the APPLY button, so that all the files and folders on the flash will pop up all.
Using the Command Prompt. Open Command Prompt via the Start Menu> Run and write or type: CMD and Enter. Or via the Start Menu> All Programs> Accessories> Command Prompt. Safe Mode, Benefits and Uses

For most of our (computer users) may be familiar with the term Safe Mode. Provide this feature in the Windows operating system, for a variety of purposes. For example, to inspect or repair the damage to the windows system, remove viruses, check for damage and other drivers.

How to enable Safe Mode and anything that can be utilized when we've entered Safe Mode?

What is Safe Mode?

Safe mode is the preferred option start up windows whose primary function handle if there is a problem with the system. Windows will run with minimal conditions, only the files and important drivers in the switch, as well as additional software mostly not enabled. Then when it entered safe mode, then it will appear the words "Safe Mode" in the top corner windows.

How to Enter Safe Mode

One way that can be used in almost all windows systems including Windows Vista is by pressing the F8 key when Windows is booting (or when the computer starts up and display information Memory / hardware). After that will perform some computer boot options menu, as follows:

Enable VGA Mode, Windows will run with a minimum display modes such as 640 × 480 or 800 × 600 . Usually used to check for damage or error [ driver ] VGA ( graphics display windows ).
Last Known Good Configuration, running windows using the registry information that was saved when the last shutdown . Use one if we change the system configuration , or when windows failed to get into the main display.

Some of the benefits of Safe Mode

Uninstall previous software causes the computer hangs , errors and so on . Sometimes after a certain program installed windows problem, so if it can not be uninstalled through normal mode using Safe Mode .
Disable certain applications or programs . To facilitate the entry into Safe Mode , can use application which can be obtained free Autoruns from SysInternals . This technique can also be used to check the computer loading slow . If no Autoruns , can type in msconfig in the Run menu to run the System Configuration Utility , if it has been selected through the Startup tab.
Examine the problems with the graphics display windows (VGA) . When the display windows problem , can be checked by selecting " Enable VGA Mode " , if it works and does not see the problem , the possibility of problems in the VGA driver .
Deleting files / virus can not get through normal mode . Some antivirus can still be run in safe mode , and tried to scan through safe mode . Sometimes the virus is not running in safe mode, although many also be active even in Safe Mode.

Computer Suddenly Dead (Do not want to turn on)? Try These Tips!

I have had several friends arrival (customer) that computer dead, will not turn on at all or sometimes only until the initial appearance and then stops / hangs. To find out and solve the computer problems, there are some tips that can be done, according to the problems faced.

Computers are dead / hangs before entering the operating system can be various causes. Here are tips that I've practiced and almost always successful. Choose appropriate to the problems faced, or do it gradually.

Check cables, ranging from cables that go to the UPS / Stabilizer, Power cable to the Monitor, Monitor cable to the CPU and the cable that goes to the computer. Ensure compliance and tight installation, and there is electrical current and enough.
