Marley was huddled by a dryer vent when a kind person found him and rushed him to a veterinary clinic in Georgia. The yellow tabby cat was eight pounds under normal weight, severely dehydrated, and chilled to the bone. He had been shaved without care, leaving much of his fur hanging from his body in heavy swatches. He was in such bad shape that several animal shelters refused to take him in.

I used to have a dog, Mo, who hated noise so much that she once broke a window to get back into the house after an unexpected clap of thunder right after being let out. I would never have let her out, knowing how afraid of noise she was had I known a storm was coming. Other pets I've had have no problems with noise, but they are all different. The dog I have right now, Cosmo, was a shelter rescue who has a severely profound fear of cardboard boxes, so I keep them out of sight whenever possible. He was just a puppy when I got him, but I get the impression that the sadistic individuals who had access to him prior to his adoption put him in them, possibly closing them with him inside for the violent reaction he has when he sees one. Please keep the noise in mind if you are thinking of bringing your best friend to the fireworks tonight. Always think of your best friend, because they are always thinking of you.

Free Tony the Truck Stop Tiger Now, Not Later

For the last decade, a tiger named Tony has been confined to a cage at a truck stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana. The concrete floors of Tony's enclosure leave the pads of his feet bloody, and the pond in his cage is too small to protect him from the crippling Louisiana heat and the highway's noxious fumes. In his current surroundings, Tony spends his days pacing back and forth to amuse gawking tourists and truck drivers.

This May, thanks to efforts by Care2 members and the Animal Legal Defense Fund, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agreed that Tony should be set free. However, the truck stop owner's current permit was still kept active, meaning that Tony will not be free until this December.

Tony has already endured too many Louisiana summers in the name of cheap entertainment. Tell the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to revoke the truck stop owner's permit now and set Tony free.

Saying good bye to my beautiful friend Sina. She was the sweetest cat I ever had the pleasure to know and she will be missed. She was the only cat I've ever known that enjoyed playing fetch. We only had her for a year after rescuing her from a very bad place, so I know she was happy, but I wish she was happier longer.

Six Tips for a Pet-Safe Summer

The last days of May signal the unofficial start of summer for folks, young and old, across the country. But with these carefree months of no homework and summer Fridays comes an increased risk for illness or injury for our furry pals.

From unpredictable weather to unusual routines, our animals are exposed to all sorts of hazards during June, July and August, and your pet is counting on you to keep him safe. Check out our top six tips for keeping your animal secure all summer long.

- Give your pet access to plenty of fresh water at all times. Even the healthiest pets can suffer from dehydration, heat stroke and sunburn if overexposed to the heat.
- Avoid lathering your pet with any insect repellent or sunscreen not intended for the four-legged kind.
- Keep your pet away from matches, citronella candles and lighter fluid, which if eaten can irritate the stomach, lungs and central nervous system.
- Be cool near the pool. Don't leave pets unsupervised around a pool, lake or high waters—not all dogs are expert swimmers!
- Never leave your dog, cat or any other animal friend alone in a car! The inside of a car can heat up very quickly—even with a window open.
- Be prepared! From tornadoes to floods, we've seen the devastation severe weather has brought to pets and their families these past few weeks. Develop an evacuation plan well ahead of time in case you're forced from your home in an emergency.

Knowing how important spaying and neutering one's pet is, advising many that doing so is required of any responsible pet owner, I felt like a hypocrite when I stopped urging people to do so when my daughter's beautiful kitten died after her surgery. She was sweet and loved my daughter, so we wanted to do the best for her but, for whatever reason, she did not survive.

The vet could not say what killed her, but in reading up on-line about deaths after spaying, I saw that the occurrence without explanation is all too common. As such, I felt guilty recommending the procedure for a long time, but I can't ignore the results of not having our pets spayed and neutered. It came down to weighing one tragedy against another and taking the chance of losing a precious pet or the certain over population of unwanted creatures who receive no health care, love, homes, or food. We've all seen the heartbreaking commercials showing abused and neglected pets rescued only to live out their lives in the cages of overcrowded shelters.

It is a chance we need to take and while my daughter's kitten, Double K, died to our horrific surprise, I've had many pets spayed and neutered over the years successfully without incident. It is a chance worth taking for the greater good. Please spay or neuter your pet.

Billy Joe Gregg, the creep who is shown in the video abusing these poor cows, got a lousy eight months. I hope that's enough time to keep him from legally registering the gun found in his car searched by the police, never allowing him to become one of them.

For abusing the other, more intelligent animals in this video, the sentence was under a year, so he wasn't charged with a felony for the cows or the gun. Right? He wasn't beaten or scared out of his undersized mind like he did to those gentle creatures. The cows weren't allowed to spend a little private time with him either, so what exactly did Billy Joe experience to teach him a lesson?

Nothing. Okay, he might have had an unpleasantly embarrassing cavity search, but big whoop. He got nothing like what he deserved and I would have felt better hearing this little phycho will never wear a badge or carry a gun like the police officers we occasionally hear about on the news shooting and killing handcuffed people who weren't a threat to them at the railroad station, shooting racially profiled people reaching for their wallets, tazing little old ladies to death in their wheelchairs, or shooting and killing tame, albeit excited dogs at the dog run while they are off duty -- as I am certain it is that type of cop this vermin would be. We don't need another one of them. Imagine what a big man he'd be with a gun. Is it not the serial killer whose past is investigated to find animal abuse?

As I sit at my computer, many things cross my mind and right now my thoughts are with the many displaced pets that got caught in the terrible floods in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississsippi. Are your pets as safe from the weather as they can be? Are they as safe as you are? They should be. Those pets are suffering as much as victims of the elements can be and the fear they are experiencing probably could have been avoided in many cases. See that your pets do not ever fall victim to this terrible fate.

Have you seen Food Inc.? I watched it a couple of days ago and I'm still pissed. It's on instant play on Netflix. I assume everyone has Netflix. If not, there is always a free monthly trial and definitely worth checking out if you have an aversion to reality TV as I hope you do. I don't know if it's worth a queue spot for you to rent, but it's definitely worth a free peak and it is a must see. Especially for an animal lover. It's along the lines of the book regarding the slaughter houses years ago that brought about inspections and standards that not only helped the employees, but let the consumers know they were being fed the employees' fingers or the entire employee that had fallen into the vat. The ecoli breakouts that are killing children are what is being fed to us that was a shortcut in the factory. Children and the elderly are expendable to these greedy bastards.
