Microsoft will allow applications with licenses like GNU and Apache (popular open source licenses) to be distributed through the Windows Store. It means a free hand to open source software developers who want to leverage their software through the Windows Store. This is an unprecedented event for the industry. Even though Microsoft intends to make money off the store, it is good to see that open source is also getting some attention from a giant enterprise amongst giants.

Open source software is that kind of software where the code is openly available for any developer to work with. The level of freedom and scope for commercial exploitation depends on the license.

Microsoft has not publicly advertised this feature and no one can be sure why not. It is a very bold move for a commercial software company as large as them. It is also an industry first. Neither Apple nor even the ever-benevolent Google are doing it. Perhaps the Redmond giant is simply biding its time waiting to make the announcement in a good and steady flow. Amongst all the UI related improvements, native utilities and features, Windows 8 Desktop, Start Menu and Windows 8 Search are the most significant, as these elements have been totally revamped with new metro look, accompanied by some new and interesting features. Windows 8 Desktop

In contrast to Windows 7, which loads desktop after booting the system or shows login screen (if enabled), Windows 8 greets users with the newly designed Start Menu. Unlike Windows 7 search, which shows results in Windows Explorer when Enter key is pressed, Windows 8 Search extends the Search pane to whole screen area, allowing you to view filtered search items from pre-defined and custom search categories. Apart from opening files/folders, and launching application, you can use the Advanced button in bottom-right corner to run the application as administrator, open location of selected items, and Pin to Taskbar. The Pin button present next to Advanced pins the selected item to Windows 8 Start Menu.

In order to perform online search, you need to sign in with Microsoft supported accounts, such as, MSN, Live, Hotmail, prior to initiate search. Just enter the keywords you want to search and hit Enter key to let Windows Search fetch results from online sources.

Windows 8 Start Menu

Before I started with Windows 8 installation I selected a different drive for it, so that I could use it as a dual-boot system where I can choose either XP or W 8. After installation I restarted the system but I couldn’t see any option to choose my earlier version i.e., XP, later I was confused and thought all my XP operating system files are deleted from the PC and I’ll be not able to access it once again. And I think many users would have faced this situation, if you are one of them then no need to worry about. Just go through the below given steps which helps you to enable both operating system on same PC.

How to enable and choose Windows XP in Windows 8 boot loader:

Step 1: Open your Windows 8 desktop page and click on the folder as shown below.

Now click and open COMPUTER icon as shown below.

Sources close to Microsoft have informed TNW that the public Windows 8 beta will be released in late February of 2012.

The timing of the public beta launch has been the subject of much debate in the technology community. It is expected that Windows 8 will be released in 2012, but the exact expected date for the completion and shipping of the forthcoming operating system remains undisclosed. However, knowing the release time frame of the beta itself allows us to better project when the work should be done on the Windows 8 project.

TNW previously spent a good deal of time employing Windows 7′s release milestones in a Windows 8 context, estimating that Windows 8 should be released to manufacturers (RTM) in June. Given the newly known ‘late February’ planned beta release, our estimate remains possible, if perhaps a bit optimistic.

I was unable to confirm exactly what will be in the beta itself. The feature set is not yet nailed down. It will be decided, as always, by the engineers working on the project deciding which components are ready for release. So, no word yet on the email function currently missing from the developer preview of the OS, and if it will be in the beta. We’ll keep you up to date as we hear from our sources.

While February is perhaps farther off than some were hoping, Windows 8 continues to make progress, and assuming Microsoft makes this milestone we think it should still be on track for its expected third quarter launch next year. That means it could be, unless something goes horribly wrong, on hardware everywhere for the next holiday sales cycle.
