Building Android Apps with TouchDevelop

The cross platform nature of this tool is amazing.

In April 2011, I wrote about using App Inventor to do point-and-click Android development (you can read part 1, 2, and 3 if you missed them). Inventor is now developed, by the way, byMIT.

I recently tried another tool that offers a different kind of point-and-click development that can target Android (as well as many other platforms, including modern web browsers). That tool, TouchDevelop, is from Microsoft Research and is an interesting hybrid between a GUI "point-and-click" development environment and traditional text-based development.

TouchDevelop scripts or programs don't even pretend to be general purpose. They assume you have a Wall (the screen on a phone or a web page) and many of the libraries center around things like web services or game creation.

Building disaster-relief phone apps on the fly

Researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the Qatar Computing Research Institute have developed new tools that allow people with minimal programming skill to rapidly build cellphone applications that can help with disaster relief.

The tools are an extension of the App Inventor, open-source software that enables nonprogrammers to create applications for devices running Google’s Android operating system by snapping together color-coded graphical components. Based on decades of MIT research, the App Inventor was initially a Google product, but it was later rereleased as open-source software managed by MIT.

With the new tools, an emergency aid worker — or anyone else, for that matter — could, for instance, build an application to monitor many different data sources on the Internet for updated information about the locations of ad hoc shelters, and display them all on a Google map. The app could also allow individual users to revise, annotate or supplement the information displayed in the map.

Students build app for children with autism

For Lambert and Lamm, who had no experience working in computer science when they began, one of the most difficult parts of creating the app was the actual programming. They worked with a special program from MIT called the App Inventor.

“It’s kind of like putting a puzzle together. Instead of having to type in programming language, you just put blocks together,” Lambert said.
