Steam releases new companion app for iOS and Android, restricts access to invited users only

Steam has released a new companion application for the iOS and Android platforms. This app lets you browse all the Steam games, see if there are new offers and chat with your Steam friends. Unfortunately, it seems you can’t buy any games through the app for now but you can add it to your cart so you can purchase it through the desktop client.

But what’s worse is that the app will only let you use it if you’re part of the beta program. Steam has restricted access to a few accounts and you have to sign in to request an invite. After that you wait for the invite to arrive so you can use the app, which let’s face it, doesn’t let you do much. If you wanted to check out the games and offers you could just browse the Steam website through your phone’s browser. So it’s basically a chat client now for communicating with your Steam buddies.

iPad still dominates the tablet realm, but Android is getting close, analysis shows

We just got the report on the tablet market in 2011 from Strategy Analytics and it tells some interesting stories. The iPad managed to just over double its sales compared to 2010 and is still the dominant force, holding a market share of 57.6%.

However, the iPad is no longer able to keep up with the overall market growth, which is fueled by the strengthening Android sales. The green robot tablets shipments grew over three times year-over-year and that helped them reduce the gap to their iOS counterparts.
The Windows tablets also managed to snatch 1.5% of the market, while other platforms (that would mostly the HP TouchPads and BlackBerry PlayBooks, we guess) got 1.9%.

If iOS and Android do keep their growth rate through 2012, the two will be tied at the top come the end of the year. Windows will probably be unable to make a strong impact just yet, but there’s huge potential there too with the Windows 8 platform, so we should probably be keeping an eye on it, as well.

Jailbreaking and rooting could soon become illegal again, unless you act now

Back in July of 2010 the US government ruled that jailbreaking and rooting weren’t a crime as long as the intention behind them isn’t circumventing copyright.

The ruling is set to expire soon and unless renewed, jailbreaking and rooting of smartphones will become illegal once again.
An organization called the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) has issued a petition that anyone can sign – the idea is to get enough objective opinions in favor of renewing the ruling. The EFF also wants to add tablets to the agreement.

Whether jailbreaking is legal or illegal may not matter much to the end user, but not voting for legalization would surely put all the hard-working devs outside the law.

Apple posts its highest quarterly revenue and earning figures, sells a truckload of iPhones, iPads and Macs

There will be much celebration going on in 1, Infinite Loop, Cupertino right now and rightly so because the company just posted its highest quarterly revenue and earnings figures ever along with record-breaking iPhone, iPad and Mac sales.

Apple posted a record quarterly revenue of $46.33 billion and record quarterly net profit of $13.06 billion, or $13.87 per diluted share, which is up by almost 50 percent over last year’s quarter. Apple also generated over $17.5 billion in cash flow during this quarter and their total bank balance now sits at a lofty $97.6 billion in cash.
All of this money comes from some record-breaking product sales. Apple sold a staggering 37.04 million iPhones (up by 128 percent over last year), 15.43 million iPads (up by 111 percent over last year) and 5.2 million Macs (up by 26 percent over last year). The only product category that saw a decline was the iPod, with 15.4 million sales, down by 21 percent over last year’s. And lastly, for a ‘hobby’, the Apple TV sold a surprisingly well 1.4 million units. Do note that these are all actual sales figures and not shipments as posted by most other companies.
In other news, iBooks Author has been downloaded over 600,000 times since it debuted last week and iCloud now has over 85 million users. iTunes now has over 20 million songs in its library and helped generate over $1.2 billion in revenue for Apple. Apple Stores helped generate $17.1 million per store and got 110 million visitors this quarter. On the iOS front, Apple claims that the developers will have earned over $4 billion in total from Apple for their apps by the end of this month.

A new custom firmware called Whited00r lets you install portions of iOS 5 on older iPhone models.

Whited00r brings a few modern improvements to the older iOS 3 and iOS 4 platforms to match the latest developments of iOS 5.

Some highlights include iOS 5-style reminders, sounds, shadows, wallpapers and folders. It also jailbreaks your phone and provides a carrier unlock, if needed.

There’s a caveat, of course, you can’t access the Apple App Store, but Whited00r provides an alternative one which features many popular iOS3 apps. Apple announces iBooks 2, iBooks Author and iTunes U

Just as expected, Apple made three important education-related announcements at their event in New York today. The company unveiled the next version of iBooks for iPad – iBooks 2, which now features interactive textbooks.

Apple also unveiled iBooks Author – a Mac OS X application that should greatly facilitate the creation of those textbooks (or other interactive books) and iTunes U iOS app, which lets you access complete courses from leading universities and plenty of free educational content.

The Cupertino-based company claims to have reinvented (the Apple PR department sure loves that word) the textbook with their iBooks 2 app, which now has an extra category called Textbooks. The company has partnered with Pearson, McGraw Hill and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt to fill the category’s shelves and offers their textbooks starting from $14.99.

And to make sure the stream of new titles doesn’t stop, Apple created the iBooks Author Mac OS app. Available for free over the Mac application store, the app should make it extremely easy to create textbooks and regular electronic books for the iBooks store.

You can pick one of the many preloaded templates, or you can create the whole thing from scratch – the capabilities of iBooks Author seem endless. It’s also pretty intuitive, automatically creating and formatting pages when you drop in a Word document, creating widgets from presentations, etc.

Next, Apple talked about their new iTunes U app, which should enable students to easily access notes, lectures and even whole courses from the comfort of their iDevices. It’s available for iPod, iPhone and iPad running iOS 5.0 or later.

iTunes U claims to have the world’s largest catalog of free education content including over 500,000 free lectures, videos, books, and other resources on thousands of subjects from Algebra to Zoology.

Finally, Apple also released a new iTunes version, which should enable the new functionality of the iBooks app. iTunes 10.5.3 is naturally available for free and requires a 107MB download to install.

The ChronicDevTeam courtesy of member @DHowett, iOS developer, has a video showcasing an untethered jailbreak on an iPhone 4S, running on iOS 5.0.1.

This sort of a jailbreak solution has been available on A4-powered iDevices but, up until now, it had its ups and downs on the A5-powered iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

The video seems real. We’re demonstrated a reboot after which Cydia is still functional and last but not least we’re shown the different antenna design and a running Siri version.
As to when the untethered jailbreak for A5 devices will be available the developer says “Only a few to wait now.” Are those few days, few months we don’t know.

The other bit of news is that the security loop-hole found in iOS 5.0.1, which allows the untethered jailbreak on A5 devices has been patched up in iOS 5.1 beta 3. In layman’s terms this means no untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.1 in the foreseeable future.

So if you haven’t updated to iOS 5.0.1 and wish to use the untethered jailbreak, you should steer clear of all upgrading when iOS 5.1 becomes available publicly.

When Apple announced that they will be having an education announcement on Thursday in New York, the general consensus was that they will be announcing digital textbooks for their iOS devices, particularly the iPad, which is becoming increasingly popular in schools and colleges.

However, according to some new information from Ars Technica, that may not be the only thing that they will be announcing on Thursday. According to their sources, Apple will also be releasing tools for creation of ebooks, which Ars dubs it as the “GarageBand for books”.

It is believed that the current lack of popularity of the ebooks is due to the difficulty in creating them. With this new tool, many are expecting Apple to revolutionize the ebook creation industry the way they did with music and apps. They may not create their own content, but they are expected to release tools to make the lives of those who do easier.

Ars goes on to say that Steve Jobs himself was personally involved in this project and that he saw a great potential in this industry. These tools were to be announced along with the iPhone 4S but were supposedly delayed due to his poor health.

Along with these tools, Apple is also expected to upgrade to the new ePub 3 format for ebooks. Currently they rely on ePub 2 for iBooks which needs HTML5 extensions for audio and video elements inside the books but the new ePub 3 format does not require such extensions.

And regarding the previous assumptions about Apple launching education textbooks, The Wall Street Journal is now saying that Apple will in fact partner with publishers and release textbooks for the iPad.

For an average Apple fan this event might not hold a lot of interest but it could be a very big deal for those wanting to get into ebook publishing business or the schools that use or are thinking of using iPads in their classrooms.

You’ve probably heard that there’s an Apple event scheduled for January 19, this Thursday. The invite they sent out promises “an education announcement” and the rumor mill says that Apple will be unveiling new tools and a platform to create and publish eBooks, with a strong focus on interactive content.

According to Steve Jobs’ biography, digital book publishing and its use in education was a pet project of Apple’s former leader and in a couple of days we might see the results. To quote the biography, textbook publishing is a “$8 billion a year industry ripe for digital destruction.”

Apple already have iBooks, which allow things like videos to be embedded in the virtual pages of eBooks. That’s done through proprietary extensions of ePub, which causes compatibility issues with other readers. Apple will reportedly be moving to the latest version of ePub, which has native support for multimedia and interactivity. This would mean that such books will work on non-Apple devices.

But rumors also suggest that the other big part of the announcement is new tools for creating such books. It said to be the GarageBand of eBooks, meaning everyone will be able to easily create their own books.

Rumor has it February will see the launch of the iPad 3 at one of Apple’s special events

Fire up the rumor mill, another Apple product has appeared on the horizon.

There are whispers that come February, Tim Cook will be telling us about ‘the greatest iPad yet’, or words to that effect at a special event expected to take place early next month.

Japanese blog Macotakara have had words with members of Apple’s supply chain in Asia and made contact with sources in the US to deduce that a special event is likely to take place early next month, welcoming the launch of iOS 5.1 and with it, the arrival of the iPad 3.

Based on the timings of the iOS 5.1 beta release last week and the Chinese New Year factory holidays, in conjunction with previous iPad releases, we’re going to predict that Apple’s next tab will touch down in the first batch of markets by early March.

Specs are expected to include a 2048 x 1536-pixel HD display, alongside battery life said to double that of the iPad 2 and a slightly thicker case to accommodate it. For the bargain hunters amongst you, the launch will also result in the inevitable price drop of iPad 2s, with each model presumably knocking $100 of its price point.

We probably won’t hear anything official from Cupertino on all of this until the February 1st but in the meantime, feel free to speculate on what you think the next iPad will bring to consumers in the comments below. I say it’ll be the first device to use Siri after the iPhone 4S.

The popular file syncing app SugarSync just got an update, which makes it even easier to keep the multimedia files on your computer and your smartphone/tablet synchronized. The update hit both the Android and iOS versions of the app, but the change logs for the two seem a bit different.

No more searching for a USB cable or removing the micro-SD card to add pictures or videos from your Android device to the computer. Remember those creepily realistic Steve Jobs action figures that we saw the other day? Well they may not happen if Apple has its way. The Cupertino-based company has already sent its team of legal sharks to deal with the manufacturer.

Apple says that it owns the likeness of its late founder and releasing the 12-inch action figure on the market would be a criminal offense. However In Icon (the manufacturer of the toy) seems unfazed, saying that it won’t stop production.

A representative of the company said that Steve Jobs is not a product and Apple has no copyrights over him. Well we’ll see how this one unfolds, but for now the figure remains on track for its promised February release.

If there are any takers out there you may book your place in line by pre-ordering one from eBay. The price is a bit higher than the promised $99, though, and the shipping charges are downright outrageous.

It appears that the promised untethered jailbreak tool for A5-touting devices isn’t as close to public availability as we all hoped. A couple of days ago the popular indie developer pod2g said that if we are lucky enough we might get it in a week, but maybe our luck just ran out..

It turns out that the jailbreaking tool for the newest iDevices – the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S that pod2g developed relies on the user having a developers account. And since most iPhone and iPad users don’t have such account (and it costs $100 a year to create one) it’s impossible to release the tool for public consumption.
In short, what the developer now has is an exploit that can be used for jailbreaking a device, but cannot be distributed. And it appears that there’s no workaround to that, as pod2g says that another exploit needs to be found.
We’ll see how long this will take, but we wouldn’t hold our breath if we were you. It’s much easier to live with the idea that it will happen when it happens.

It was effectively impossible to miss hearing about Siri, the ‘virtual assistant’, at the launch of the iPhone 4S and since it was unleashed on the world we’ve seen some impressive practical demonstrations and a far larger proportion of comedic ones.

But what if we told you that using Siri could potentially double your data usage compared to that of the humble iPhone 4 user, something you might not notice until your next nasty bill.
Following analysis undertaken by network firm Arieso, analysis of their report showed that using Siri results in data usage that’s twice as fast as typical usage from an iPhone 4.
It’s important to bear in mind here that there are a number of factors contributing to the heavy data drain. For starters the iPhone 4S is still the newest iPhone from Apple, still making sales and flaunting its features as “the most amazing iPhone yet”. As such it’s most popular features, namely Siri are seeing particularly heavy use right now. Once the novelty of voice recognition wears off (as it undoubtedly will), the usage statistics will presumably quieten down.
Be that as it may, Siri’s present thirst for data could catch you and your wallet by surprise, especially if you don’t have an all-you-can-eat unlimited data plan, and with the way carriers are going, chances are, unlimited data will become a thing of the past, perhaps before the end of 2012.

The iPhone 4S coming to 22 new markets, January 13th

On January 13th, the iPhone 4S will touch down in a number of new markets including the likes of China, Jamaica and Kenya along with 19 others, across the globe.

Apple's CEO Tim Cook has a lot to smile about, especially with a yet untapped market like China (with regards to the iPhone 4S at least). Tim states that,
“Customer response to our products in China has been off the charts. With the launch in China next week, iPhone 4S will be available in over 90 countries making this our fastest iPhone rollout ever.”
What's more, Chinese New Year hits on January 23rd with sales events not too dissimilar to that of the US's Black Friday. As such, Apple can expect very healthy figures once the shoppers hit the stores in coming weeks.

Some reliable people have discovered quad-core processor support into the iOS 5.1 beta code. So, we could expect quad-core iPhones and iPads in the near future.
Shocker? Of course not. But it’s good to know Apple is already working on the next big hardware jump.

A few months ago other skilful developers discovered the iPhone5,1 reference into the first iOS 5.1 beta code. It might turn out Apple is indeed gearing the next iPhone with a quad-core A6 chip.

Apple iPad 3 will feature Retina Display and an 8 MP snapper, the iPad 2 to get an 8GB version?

The announcement of the Apple iPad 3 is just a few months away now, so naturally the rumor train is starting to pick up speed. In today’s scoop we are talking display, camera and the fate of the current iPad after the release of its successor.

Once again, we are hearing that the iPad 3 will have four times the resolution of the iPad 2, which will reportedly be marketed as Retina display. Quadrupling the iPad 2 resolution on the same screen estate will give you pixel density of 264 ppi, which on a screen this big should feel as good as the 326ppi of the last two iPhones.
The camera rumors have it that the next iPad will share its primary camera module with one of the last two iPhones – the iPhone 4 or the iPhone 4S. This means that it will either have a 5 megapixel or an 8 megapixel snapper and if you ask us this sounds believable – it will probably cost next to nothing for Apple to include those modules, given that it already has them developed and it will make quite good PR material.
The front camera is said to get its own update too – it will be able to record HD video, which will be put to good use in the new Facetime HD video-chat app.
The minimal price that needs to be paid for all this goodness is the 1mm of extra thickness that the iPad 3 will have compared to the iPad 2. The new slate is said to release in March and cost as much as the iPad 2 currently does (well, duh!).
The final rumor for today concerns the iPad 2. Apparently, Apple will try and apply the iPhone model with its slates as well and will keep it available, reducing its price by $100. This means that the 16GB iPad 2 will go for $399 and there’s an outside chance of a $299 8GB version coming to life. That last bit sounds really hard to believe, but knowing Apple and their ways it’s certainly not impossible.
