In 1893, Blind Lemon Jefferson was born near Galveston Texas, and although he made his home and his reputation in Dallas, he roamed far and wide around the South and the Mid-West as a 'wandering songster'. His companion for some years was Huddie 'Lead Belly' Ledbetter, who told many tales of their travelling times. They would hitch rides on trains, playing to entertain the crew and passengers. Silver City on the line to Forth Worth was a favourite destination, as Lead Belly recounts. “That was me and Blind Lemon's hangout. We had twenty-five or thirty girls each out there. We liked for the women to be around....... they brings men and that brings money.” Both men drank and gambled heavily as they worked the barrel-house circuit of saloons and gin-mills, but their double act was broken up in 1918 when Lead Belly was given thirty years in jail for the murder of Will Stafford.

When in the Carolinas, a seven-year-old Josh White would serve as Lemon's guide. Josh would play the tambourine in time with Lemon's guitar, turning the instrument upside down to collect "Help the blind!" donations once a sizeable crowd had gathered. They could earn up to $150 over a weekend, an incredible sum for the time.

Blues music, with its rich history, has always been a fertile ground for artistic exchange and adaptation, but it is also a terrain fraught with issues of appropriation and credit. As we delve into the annals of this profound and influential genre, we encounter a fascinating tapestry of musicians who, in the pursuit of their art, freely borrowed and adapted each other's work. Be it the legendary Charley Patton, the influential Son House, or the renowned Bessie Smith, each artist's journey presents a unique insight into the dynamics of artistic transmission and the controversial nature of 'borrowing'. This article explores the complex, often contentious landscape of the Blues, shedding light on the thin line between homage, influence, and outright theft in the music industry.

While it's common knowledge that musicians in the blues genre have a long-standing tradition of borrowing and adapting the tunes and lyrics of others, some critics label this as 'artistic transmission', while others see it as plain theft. Even the names of the players were not immune to this practice! In an era where copyright protection was largely overlooked, it was customary for musicians to imitate each other's styles, exchange phrases, and occasionally, enter into formal apprenticeship. An example is Charley Patton, who under Henry Sloan's instruction, honed his craft at Dockery Plantation and established himself as a competent player by his 20s.

Moving forward a few years, Patton was invited to join the band of W C Handy, a significant recognition for a young talent. Son House was greatly influenced by Patton's repertoire, just as he, in turn, deeply influenced a young Robert Johnson, who reportedly received his first guitar at Dockery. These key figures in blues music, all residing in the Clarksdale area in the late 1920s, significantly contributed to the enrichment of the Delta Blues through their creative collaboration.

Harry Odum

Ethnographers and musicologists of the era have also given us invaluable insights into the music. Dorothy Scarborough's 'On the Trail of Negro Folksongs' sheds light on the transmission of tunes and stories across generations, highlighting the role of oral tradition in educating illiterate individuals about their culture. However, the concept of 'giving' becomes problematic when the 'gift' is subsequently sold on. Howard Odum's field recordings include a singer, possibly a relative of Bessie Smith, who begins each song with the declaration of his name and home city, clearly frustrated by the appropriation of his work.

Such issues were not exclusive to unknown musicians, but extended to recording artists as well. Bessie Smith was being deceived by her agent, leading her to sign an exclusively personal contract with Colombia in 1923 that offered a better compensation of $125 per track. Her debut release, 'Down-hearted Blues', sold a staggering 780,000 copies, but her contract had not provisioned for royalties.

Following the murder of John Lee 'Sonny Boy' Williamson in Chicago in 1948, Aleck 'Rice' Miller adopted his name. Despite being arguably more talented and a better entertainer than John Lee, Aleck found it necessary to claim legitimacy as the 'real' Sonny Boy. The truth remains ambiguous, as both men may have had a propensity for misrepresentation. Years later, the quick-tempered Little Walter allegedly shot a man performing under his name.

Blues is a dynamic genre, where singers often alter their lyrics to include lines or verses they've heard, adopting a 'cut and paste' approach. Tunes, melodies, and riffs are frequently utilised by musicians who didn't originate them, blurring the line between inspiration and outright plagiarism. Willie Dixon, often credited with writing hundreds of songs during the Chicago Blues' Golden Age, reportedly 'adapted' riffs and phrases from young Southern musicians, trying to impress him with their best work. Howlin' Wolf successfully sued Led Zeppelin for reworking 'Killin Floor' as 'The Lemon Song', and Chuck Berry did the same when the Beach Boys used 'Sweet Little Sixteen' as the tune for 'Surfin USA'. Both 'new' versions greatly outsold the originals, and it's likely that the original authors didn't receive a fair deal.

Earning credit for your Blues requires a fight.

In conclusion, the story of Blues is a poignant reflection of the longstanding tradition of artistic adaptation, influence, and, at times, outright appropriation, nestled within its soulful chords and poignant lyrics. This genre, steeped in history, illustrates the complexities of 'borrowing' in the world of music and prompts us to question the very nature of creativity. It serves as a stark reminder of the need for a more equitable system, one that adequately acknowledges the contributions of all artists, and protects their rights. As we continue to enjoy the timeless melodies of the Delta Blues, may we also remember to value and respect the creative origins and journey of these influential tunes. The Blues, as it seems, will forever remain a powerful testament to the thin line between homage and theft in the music industry.

The Journey of Christone "Kingfish" Ingram

At just five years old, Christone “kingfish” Ingram’s interest in the blues was sparked by a PBS documentary about Muddy Waters, shown to him by his father. Growing up in the hometown of blues legends like B.B. King and John Lee Hooker, it’s no surprise that Kingfish was destined for greatness. He began playing drums at the age of six, switched to bass, and eventually picked up the guitar, a decision that would change his life forever.

From winning a Grammy award for his album “662” to non-stop touring and collaborations with legends like Buddy Guy, Christone Kingfish Ingram has quickly become one of the most exciting young guitarists of our time.

Asperger Syndrome and Musical Talent

Kingfish was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, a developmental disorder that falls under the autism spectrum and is known for difficulties in social interaction and communication. However, instead of letting this diagnosis hold him back, Kingfish has used it to fuel his musical talent and career. His unique perspective on life and music has allowed him to channel the raw emotion of the blues, creating a sound that resonates with audiences around the world.

Influenced by blues greats like Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Buddy Guy, Kingfish’s guitar playing style is a testament to his dedication and passion for the genre.
Mentors and Early Education

Throughout his early years, Kingfish was fortunate to be surrounded by talented mentors who recognized his potential and nurtured his passion for the blues. Bill “Howl-N-Mad” Perry and Richard “Daddy Rich” Crisman provided invaluable guitar lessons at the Delta Blues Museum, helping the young prodigy develop his signature style.

It was Bill “Howl-N-Mad” Perry who bestowed the nickname “Kingfish” upon Christone, inspired by a character in the sitcom The Amos ‘n’ Andy Show. Under the guidance of these mentors, Kingfish honed his skills and immersed himself in the blues, laying the foundation for a successful career that would soon take the world by storm.

Johnson was an itinerant performer, gathering crowds in lumber camps, taverns, sidewalks, and even on radio broadcasts in Ontario, Canada. His charisma, particularly with women, was noted by many, including close friend Shines, who remarked, "His sound affected women in a way I could never understand."

Johnson's body of work, though limited to a few recording sessions, has imprinted an indelible mark on Blues history. His legacy is embodied in classics like 'Crossroads', 'Love in Vain', 'Dust My Broom', and 'Sweet Home Chicago.' With darker undertones featuring prominently in songs like 'Me and the Devil' and 'Hellhound on my Trail,' Johnson's oeuvre explores the eternal struggle between good and evil, inadvertently fuelling the myth of his alleged deal with the Devil.

The irreplaceable Janis Joplin also succumbed to a similar fate, passing away in LA just a fortnight later. In 1971, Jim Morrison's life was tragically cut short in Paris. This string of premature deaths was not confined to this period: Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones had already succumbed in 1969, and the trend continued with Kurt Kobain in 1994, and most recently, Amy Winehouse, with vodka being the deciding factor. However, this so-called '27 Club' can be traced back to Robert Johnson, who met his untimely demise in 1938 after consuming whisky laced with strychnine.

A compilation of her most significant hits, this album takes listeners on an unforgettable journey through the heart of blues territory, capturing the raw and untamed spirit that Smith embodied.
The latest project of the Tedeschi Trucks Band is as ambitious as any you will find in the world of the blues. In fact, its approach is unusual and nearly unheard of for any musical project regardless of genre. The origin of the 24-song set/movie series released between early June and late August dates back to classical Persian legend, an epic poem that has served as the inspiration for another blues-rock classic album by Eric Clapton.

Source material aside, the I Am the Moon project began in 2020 with the lockdown sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic. Forced off the road, the band plotted their next move with an email sent by backup vocalist/acoustic guitarist Mike Mattison. In it, he mentioned the possible use of an epic poem 12-century epic Layla and Manjun as a creative springboard.

Mattison’s original idea was a tribute to the Derek and Dominos classic. The result was the 2021 Tedeschi Trucks Band album, Layla Revisited, a track-by-track live recording of the album.

But soon after, yet another idea came to Mattison. “The Clapton album is one point of view” he says.,” Layla as a love object: I want you, I can’t have you.” The new project was an effort to express Layla’s point-of-view. And thus was born, I Am the Moon. In the words of the vocalist/guitarist, “Well, what does Layla think about all this?” This set into motion yet another key part of the process.

Derek adds, “It’s thirty-six minutes long. That’s the way to digest a record.”

Appropriately enough, Derek Trucks describes the early jam sessions that birthed the project with these words: “We felt like we were on our own planet. Susan Tedeschi adds, “It was magical.”
And yet the magic vividly on display on the album didn’t all fall into place without serious effort and planning. A key part of that planning unfolded when Mike Mattison took the bold step of assigning the band members “homework” to prepare for the writing and recording of the album. According to Derek Trucks, “Mike had this great idea of getting the songwriters and the core of the band to read the same source material so we had something to all be thinking about, something to chew on. In the beginning it was just kind of a thought exercise, but it really just took on a full life of its own.”

Interestingly enough, the band had the Covid-19 virus to thank for such a process. As Trucks says, “If we didn’t have that time, there’s no way we’d have written twenty-four songs that were all connected to the same thing.”

To describe this writing and writing process as unusual would be an enormous understatement. In fact, the unusual nature of it was crucial. “Every record we’ve ever made,”Trucks says, “you write a few songs, everyone’s in the same mindset, you hit the road, everyone goes home, with all the troubles of your world and everybody’s mentally in a different place. When you reconnect, you’re starting from a totally different vantage point. So records are often disjointed that way, where with this, we were there every day, everyone was in the same situation.”

In this case, “the same situation” meant the band members were — thanks to the pandemic — living amongst themselves for an extended period of time. “Once people were down here and everybody was staying on the property and we were living together, I’d wake up every morning and make coffee, Sue would make breakfast, I’d sit around with an acoustic guitar and you just stumble across something.”

In time, the band stumbled across so much material that it became clear their new word wouldn’t be an ordinary release. Trucks adds, “When we had, I don’t know, 14, 15 tunes together, we started listening and realizing, “This is too much, this is not a record anymore.”

And in the end, I Am the Moon wasn’t just a record. It would become a twenty-four song set of four new albums released across a three month cycle. The names of each album, Crescent, Ascension, The Fall and Farewell provide a clue to how ambitious a project it was. Simply put, this was an album whose aspirations couldn’t be contained by the planet earth.

One of the biggest challenges for any musician is to reach a point where they are making enough money to pay their bills and allow them work on their art full time.

We have been looking at many new and creative ways for musicians to make money and so it is no surprise that back in 2021 we should investigate NFTs (Non Fungible Tokens) and try to figure out how they can help musicians. In this article I would like to share some of these findings to help you decide if they are of value to you.

What Are NFTs

Music NFTs are a way for musicians to track the copyright ownership history of their digital files. This is done by attaching an NFT to the file, in the case of a music NFT a WAV file. The NFT can then be used to prove that the file is not a copy and that it is the original. Music NFTs can also be used to sell digital music files. When a buyer purchases an Music NFT, they are buying the right to use the file. The Music NFT can then be resold or transferred to another user. Music NFTs could become the standard way of selling and distributing music. This would allow artists to retain control over their work and ensure that they are compensated fairly for their art.

How can a musician make money from NFTs?

NFTs can be used to sell exclusive access to new music, or even offer custom-made tracks in exchange for cryptocurrency. By using platforms like Opensea a single instance or many thousands of copies of a piece of music can be made available for sale or auction. Although the selling platform, Opensea or similar, will take a small commission, the majority of the money will go directly to the creator, albeit in cryptocurrency.

Because of the inherent security and ownership tracking with NFTs the originator of the music will also receive a percentage of the resale price, again in cryptocurrency, commonly Ethereum.

This allows musicians to directly monetize their work, without having to establish a formalised contractual relationship with a record company or publisher.

NFTs can help prevent piracy and ensure that royalties are paid to the correct people.

This is because they use a special kind of security that makes it hard for people to copy or share music files without permission. NFTs use blockchain technology to make sure that people can't copy or share music files without permission. This way, musicians and bands can get the money they deserve for their music.

Blockchain is a way of keeping track of things. It's a way of making sure that when someone does something, like watch a movie or listen to music, they are only allowed to do it once. And it also makes sure that the right people get paid for what they do.

NFTs can be used to create digital rights management systems that protect music files from unauthorized copying or sharing.

Music NFTs offer a new and innovative way for artists to monetize their music.

NFTs can help manage and track royalties more efficiently than traditional methods, and they can also help reduce costs associated with distribution. NFTs offer a more secure and efficient way to distribute music files, and they can be used to create digital rights management systems that protect music files from unauthorized copying or sharing. Music NFTs provide a unique opportunity for artists to gain control over their music and create new revenue streams.

NFTs allow for equitable remixes, samples and collaborations with all parties being fairly rewarded.

Music NFTs are a new way for musicians to come together and create something truly unique. By teaming up with film-makers, game-makers, music supervisors, other artists, producers, and engineers, musicians can create Music NFTs that are one-of-a-kind.

Music NFTs are unique in that they contain both audio and visual elements. This allows artists to create multimedia experiences that are truly one-of-a-kind. As Music NFTs continue to gain popularity, we can only imagine the amazing new collaborations that will come from this burgeoning technology.

Music NFTs provide a unique opportunity for fans to engage with their favorite musicians in a new and exciting way.

In addition, Music NFTs also create an additional revenue stream for artists, which can be used to fund new projects or simply to support their existing work. Ultimately, Music NFTs offer a win-win situation for both fans and artists alike.

By allowing fans to edit and add to songs, musicians can create new versions of their music that are more popular and have a higher value. Additionally, by offering upgradeable NFTs, musicians can ensure that they continue to benefit from the popularity of their music. Upgradable NFTs allow musicians to distribute their music more efficiently and increase the value of their music. As a result, Music NFTs are a great way to encourage creativity and incentivize remixes.

NFTs can be used to promote new music, merchandise, or even concert tickets.

By allowing fans and collaborators to legally build atop of an existing piece of music, upgradeable NFTs provide a unique and convenient way for artists to retain control of their work while still generating revenue from spin-off creations. Not only does this provide a more efficient and cost-effective solution for creating remixes, but it also gives artists the potential to profit from the creativity of their fans.

Live Nation's recent announcement of their Live Stubs product is just the latest example of how Music NFTs are becoming more and more popular. With Live Stubs, fans can collect and display their ticket stubs in a new and exciting way. And because each Live Stub is a Music NFT, each one is completely unique and can't be replicated. As the popularity of Music NFTs grows, so do the opportunities for artists to create new and innovative ways to connect with their fans.

Problems with music NFTs.

There are a few potential problems with using NFTs to track music royalties.

First, NFTs are still a new technology and there are not yet many established standards for how they should be used. This could lead to confusion and errors in the tracking of royalties.

Second, NFTs rely on blockchain technology, which is not yet widely used or understood. This could make it difficult for some people in the music industry to adopt and use NFTs.

Third, NFTs could potentially be used to track other types of data about music files, such as who owns the copyright to a song, which could lead to privacy concerns.

NFTs and the environment.

The process of minting NFTs is highly energy intensive. Most NFTs are minted using the proof-of-work operating method, which uses large amounts of electricity. Any energy-intensive process, crypto-related or otherwise, can exacerbate climate change by adding to the atmosphere’s carbon dioxide emissions. However, there are other more environmentally friendly ways to mint NFTs—in particular, methods using proof of stake. By selecting more environmentally friendly methods to mint Music NFTs, we can help to reduce the impact of NFTs on our climate.

Music NFTs and the Future.

Predicting the future of any technology can be difficult, however all the industry experts who are are looking at the changing ways we are operating in the Digital World agree, whether they call it Web3 or the Metasphere, NFTs will play an important role.

As we have discussed Music NFTs are the perfect way to represent and track the ownership of digital assets in the new era of the internet. By using a public blockchain, they provide a secure and transparent way to do this without the need for third-party verification. This will be crucial to unlocking the full potential of Web3.

Non-fungible tokens are a key part of the Web3 infrastructure and will play a critical role in the development of decentralized applications (dApps). Music NFTs will be an essential part of this ecosystem, providing a way to represent and track the ownership of digital assets. In addition, they will also help to ensure that rights holders are properly compensated for their work. As more dApps are built, it will be increasingly important to have a way to represent and track the ownership of digital assets. Music NFTs provide a solution that is secure, transparent, and efficient.

Should you sell your music with NFTs?

Hopefully here I have given you enough information for you to make that decision. For us at All About Blues Music we are investing heavily to test these benefits of NFTs, take a look at our new web site designed to sell Music NFTs, Production Music NFT, you can also listen to some of the tracks we have listed on Opensea, not all Blues but here is one: Daddy's Little Girl.

The important point to remember about is that although it is relatively easy to create and list an NFT, this does not guarantee sales. In the same way you can have your music on other digital platform, Spotify, Youtube Patreon etc. it will still be your responsibility to find the right audience who want to buy and invest in your creations.

The years that followed saw an expansion in the band’s popularity as well as a broadening of its aesthetic reach. After mastering a repertoire based on the Piedmont region of North and South Carolina, the band secured high-profile gigs opening gigs for the likes of Taj Mahal and Bob Dylan.

By embracing a percussive style heard almost exclusively in the realm of hip-hop, the band further galvanized a nod toward the future of music — while continuing to lovingly bring the past to life.

There’s so much amazing material out there — not just African-American music from North Carolina, but there’s the whole black Diaspora to look at, all over this country, in the Caribbean, South America. Their recently released album Live it Up was been released and made available on a number of formats and has reached the top ten in IBBA radio playlists during the summer of 2018.
If you want to know what the blues will sound like in the future, Deep Blue Sea’s 2018’s release Live it Up would be a great place to start. Blues purists may object to the enormous debt the band owes to the realm of recent guitar-based rock, but make no mistake: Live it up is as worthy an inheritor of the mantle of Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson as any ‘pure’ blues band.

Lead singer Dregas’ vocals shine best on The Thrill of it All, but the album’s closer Wounded is where all the elements come together most urgently. Deep Blue Sea’s debut album follows in the tradition of strong live blues performances. And even better, it promises more great music to come.
