Blind Lemon Jefferson, a physically large, visually impaired individual with distinctive 'owlish' facial features, was a familiar figure on the streets of Dallas for over two decades. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and carrying a tapping stick, he played his guitar with a tin cup hanging from his neck. His distinctive singing, marked by a sharp, loud voice, often attracted a crowd and would occasionally bring traffic to a standstill. His style of playing the guitar was unique, showing little respect for conventional timing and structure but instead giving his heartfelt and expressive blues songs the chance to take the limelight.

Whether his songs were delivered with the fervour of a passionate preacher or imbued with sorrowful, regretful tones, they never descended into self-pity. They instead conveyed the suffering of a repressed group of people rather than the personal misfortunes of a man rendered blind from his youth. As Victoria Spivey pointed out, "He sure could feel his way around!"

In 1893, Blind Lemon Jefferson was born near Galveston Texas, and although he made his home and his reputation in Dallas, he roamed far and wide around the South and the Mid-West as a 'wandering songster'. His companion for some years was Huddie 'Lead Belly' Ledbetter, who told many tales of their travelling times. They would hitch rides on trains, playing to entertain the crew and passengers. Silver City on the line to Forth Worth was a favourite destination, as Lead Belly recounts. “That was me and Blind Lemon's hangout. We had twenty-five or thirty girls each out there. We liked for the women to be around....... they brings men and that brings money.” Both men drank and gambled heavily as they worked the barrel-house circuit of saloons and gin-mills, but their double act was broken up in 1918 when Lead Belly was given thirty years in jail for the murder of Will Stafford.

When in Dallas, the young Aaron 'T-Bone' Walker would act as Lemon's 'lead-boy', guiding him around the city. In Houston, Sam 'Lightnin' Hopkins would take on this role, and both benefitted from the blues education Lemon provided. When in the Carolinas, a seven-year-old Josh White would serve as Lemon's guide. Josh would play the tambourine in time with Lemon's guitar, turning the instrument upside down to collect "Help the blind!" donations once a sizeable crowd had gathered. They could earn up to $150 over a weekend, an incredible sum for the time.

In 1925, Sam Price, a record store salesman, helped Lemon record 'Old Rounders Blues' and 'Begging Back'. This, along with other tracks recorded in 1926, provided Lemon with the opportunity to sign a recording contract with Paramount in Chicago. Paramount was seeking fresh talent as the popularity of 'race music' began to grow. Before the release of these blues records, Paramount put out a track by 'Deacon LJ Bates', which was actually Lemon masquerading as a 'guitar evangelist'. Lemon's suggestive hits 'Black Snake Moan' and 'Matchbox Blues', along with his emotional performances on 'Penitentiary Blues', 'Hangman's Blues' and 'Prison Cell Blues', sparked speculation about whether Lemon had spent time in jail during his earlier years.

He recorded over ninety tracks during his three-year stint with Paramount, all of which were recorded during his visits to Chicago, although he preferred to live in Dallas. Lemon was unusual among early blues artists in that he mostly recorded his own compositions, setting a precedent for future singer-songwriters in the blues genre. The blues was evolving into a potent form of human expression.

With his reputation and record sales both on the rise, Lemon became a well-known figure in the north as well as in his old southern haunts. The 27 Club

The decade beginning with 1970 witnessed an unprecedented string of tragic losses in the world of rock music. Al Wilson of Canned Heat and Jimi Hendrix, both just 27 years old, lost their lives due to drug-related incidents in Los Angeles and London respectively. The irreplaceable Janis Joplin also succumbed to a similar fate, passing away in LA just a fortnight later. In 1971, Jim Morrison's life was tragically cut short in Paris. This string of premature deaths was not confined to this period: Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones had already succumbed in 1969, and the trend continued with Kurt Kobain in 1994, and most recently, Amy Winehouse, with vodka being the deciding factor. However, this so-called '27 Club' can be traced back to Robert Johnson, who met his untimely demise in 1938 after consuming whisky laced with strychnine.

After a few years on the road, she began to make solo appearances throughout Southern theatres, New York, Atlantic City, and Philadelphia.

Bessie's career took flight in 1923 when she signed with Columbia Records in New York. Her debut hits, 'Downhearted Blues' and 'Gulf Coast Blues', catapulted her into the limelight.

During this time, she worked closely with Fletcher Henderson, a young pianist who went on to enjoy a prolific career as an arranger for Benny Goodman.

Her association with Henderson paved the way for other hits like 'T'aint Nobody's Bizness if I Do', and a collaborative effort with Louis Armstrong produced a rendition of W C Handy's 'St. Louis Blues'.

Bessie was always on the move, touring tirelessly with her show across the TOBA circuit (Theatre Owners Booking Association). Despite an absence of royalties from her record contract, she commanded hefty performance fees and was a crowd favourite, drawing significant audiences.

However, life on the road was not without perils. Bessie was no stranger to violence and even had encounters with the Ku Klux Klan. Her private life, rife with drinking, fighting, and numerous affairs, only added to her iconic status as a self-made black performer who lived life on her own terms.

I Am The Moon — Tedeschi Trucks Band

The latest project of the Tedeschi Trucks Band is as ambitious as any you will find in the world of the blues. In fact, its approach is unusual and nearly unheard of for any musical project regardless of genre. The origin of the 24-song set/movie series released between early June and late August dates back to classical Persian legend, an epic poem that has served as the inspiration for another blues-rock classic album by Eric Clapton.

Source material aside, the I Am the Moon project began in 2020 with the lockdown sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic. Forced off the road, the band plotted their next move with an email sent by backup vocalist/acoustic guitarist Mike Mattison. In it, he mentioned the possible use of an epic poem 12-century epic Layla and Manjun as a creative springboard.

If the epic’s name rings a bell, it’s probably because it served as the inspiration for the Derek and the Dominos song, Layla, as well as the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Mattison’s original idea was a tribute to the Derek and Dominos classic. The result was the 2021 Tedeschi Trucks Band album, Layla Revisited, a track-by-track live recording of the album.

But soon after, yet another idea came to Mattison. “The Clapton album is one point of view” he says.,” Layla as a love object: I want you, I can’t have you.” The new project was an effort to express Layla’s point-of-view. And thus was born, I Am the Moon. In the words of the vocalist/guitarist, “Well, what does Layla think about all this?” This set into motion yet another key part of the process.

Collectively penned by the band members, the recording process began in January of 2021 in the home of bandleaders Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, with Derek in the role of producer. He says, “The project came together quickly and organically. “It’s amazing because we wrote most of this music in a pretty short time span.”

But the recording was not without its pleasant surprises. “There are chord changes that mirror other tunes — themes and variations, lyrical allusions that pop back up. The decision to expand the project beyond the length of a standard LP came to them naturally. “You always want to do something bigger and thematic.”

Why sequence and release the album in four distinct episodes? Once again, inspiration came from the world of classic rock/blues. “We started thinking of records we love.” Chief among those beloved albums was the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s Axis: Bold as Love. Derek adds, “It’s thirty-six minutes long. That’s the way to digest a record.”

Soon, the new album blossomed into a film project that could be best described as a trippy marriage of surreal, otherworldly images and performance footage, all of which flawlessly accompanies the epic album. And yet, for all the celestial images of the film, the project’s true focus — the music supplied by the Tedeschi Trucks Band — remains front and center.

The space travel theme of the film seems to have been rooted in the music itself. Appropriately enough, Derek Trucks describes the early jam sessions that birthed the project with these words: “We felt like we were on our own planet. Susan Tedeschi adds, “It was magical.”
And yet the magic vividly on display on the album didn’t all fall into place without serious effort and planning. A key part of that planning unfolded when Mike Mattison took the bold step of assigning the band members “homework” to prepare for the writing and recording of the album. According to Derek Trucks, “Mike had this great idea of getting the songwriters and the core of the band to read the same source material so we had something to all be thinking about, something to chew on. In the beginning it was just kind of a thought exercise, but it really just took on a full life of its own.”

Interestingly enough, the band had the Covid-19 virus to thank for such a process. As Trucks says, “If we didn’t have that time, there’s no way we’d have written twenty-four songs that were all connected to the same thing.”

To describe this writing and writing process as unusual would be an enormous understatement. In fact, the unusual nature of it was crucial. “Every record we’ve ever made,”Trucks says, “you write a few songs, everyone’s in the same mindset, you hit the road, everyone goes home, with all the troubles of your world and everybody’s mentally in a different place. When you reconnect, you’re starting from a totally different vantage point. So records are often disjointed that way, where with this, we were there every day, everyone was in the same situation.”

In this case, “the same situation” meant the band members were — thanks to the pandemic — living amongst themselves for an extended period of time. “Once people were down here and everybody was staying on the property and we were living together, I’d wake up every morning and make coffee, Sue would make breakfast, I’d sit around with an acoustic guitar and you just stumble across something.”

In time, the band stumbled across so much material that it became clear their new word wouldn’t be an ordinary release. Trucks adds, “When we had, I don’t know, 14, 15 tunes together, we started listening and realizing, “This is too much, this is not a record anymore.”

And in the end, I Am the Moon wasn’t just a record. It would become a twenty-four song set of four new albums released across a three month cycle. The names of each album, Crescent, Ascension, The Fall and Farewell provide a clue to how ambitious a project it was. Simply put, this was an album whose aspirations couldn’t be contained by the planet earth.

The Big Boom

John Lee Hooker’s 1961 recording of Boom Boom is loaded with all the signature trick’s of Hooker’s trade. It bounces along with a cocky shuffle that could only come from the Mississippi delta. But for all its familiarity, its new approach to the blues made a vital difference.

For starters the legendary guitar man was by now recoding for Vee-Jay Records, affording him a full band to record with. Unlike his previous efforts on which he typically played with little, if any, accompaniment, Hooker now found himself recording with renown session men such as the famed ‘Funk Brothers’ on loan from Berry Gordy’s hit machine Motown.

The result was a bright, upbeat tune that charted on both sides of the Atlantic. It soon became a staple of pub bands all over the UK. Five British lads in particular had bigger plans.

With a playful, upbeat sound, John Lee Hooker’s Boom Boom proved his versatility.

Feeding the Animals

The Animals were a five-piece rock band from Newcastle with a handful of hits under their belts. Their cover of Hooker’s classic stays faithful to the original, mimicking its call and response vocals, its danceable tempo and its stark and playful lyrics.

A less authentic band might have added an unnecessary layer of syrup to Hooker’s classic. But the Animals knew better. They resisted the urge to smooth the song’s rough edges, retaining an element of both rawness and emotional warmth.

Boom Boom has its share of covers over the decades, but none more successful than that the Animals version. The Animals didn’t just learn the chords – they understood the mood behind them.

The Right Sound, The Wrong Century

A first listen to the Carolina Chocolate drops calls to mind a bye-gone era, days of cotton, genocidal terror and an assortment of stereotypes applied to our friends who reside south of the Maxon-Dixon line. So why does the preservation of such music, when played by people not typically thought of as fans of it and the culture that produced it sound so vibrant and joyous?

How is it a band fueled on standards older than their grandparents can somehow sound as fresh as the day’s hottest memes? The answers are as complicated America’s thorny history of race relations, but as simple as the rich but raw sound they concoct.

Yesterday’s Future

The Carolina Chocolate drops formed as a three-piece band when founding members Rhiannon Giddens (banjo, fiddle) Don Flemons (bones, jugs, guitar) and occasional guest Justin Robinson attended a 2005 gathering of Black banjo players in Boone, North Carolina. With the addition of multi-instrumentalist Sule Greg Wilson, weekly jam sessions with eighty-six year old Joe Thompson sparked the basis of the band’s connection.

The years that followed saw an expansion in the band’s popularity as well as a broadening of its aesthetic reach. After mastering a repertoire based on the Piedmont region of North and South Carolina, the band secured high-profile gigs opening gigs for the likes of Taj Mahal and Bob Dylan.

In addition to the standard dates of clubs and arenas, they performed on A Prairie Home Companion, Fresh Air Radio and Nashville, Tennessee’s famed Grand Old Oprey.

Apart from the usual line-up permutations a band endures over time, The Carolina Chocolate Drops have seen their shifting line-up reflect a shift in sound. Most dramatic of these changes was the 2011 addition of beatboxer Hubby Jenkins, who joined them after the departure of Justin Robinson.

By embracing a percussive style heard almost exclusively in the realm of hip-hop, the band further galvanized a nod toward the future of music — while continuing to lovingly bring the past to life. They had previously done a cover of Blu Cantrell’s 2001 R&B’s smash ‘Hit Em’ Up Style.’ Simply put, the Carolina Chocolate Drops were spinning ahead while gazing at the lovely scenery behind them.

Tomorrow’s Past

Since then, the band has continued to graciously accept praise, awards and opportunities to widen their audience. In their earliest years, they boasted a fan base of mostly older supporters of traditional country music. But an appearance in the Denzil Washington movie ‘The Great Debaters’ introduced them to a larger black audience. And the introductions continue across various cultural lines as their popularity skyrockets.

There’s so much amazing material out there — not just African-American music from North Carolina, but there’s the whole black Diaspora to look at, all over this country, in the Caribbean, South America. There’s such a rich tradition that it’s kind of endless. So there’s plenty of material and I’m always inspired by finding new things.

What seems to be freshest about the band’s approach is that they find ‘new’ things while also unearthing — and preserving — old things. What could be more breathtakingly novel than that?

Deep Blue Sea

If you like your blues updated into contemporary musical language, Deep Blue Sea is the kind of band you’ve been looking for.

From their cosmopolitan line-up to their eclectic range of influences, they are stunning proof that the blues — far from being a dead genre, like something you’d find in a jar of ether — is alive and evolving into something breathtakingly interesting right before our eyes and ears.

Little Devils

The earliest incarnation of Deep Blue Sea was born under the name Little Devils. Naming the band after a childhood nickname earned by the band’s bassist, they soon morphed into Deep Blue Sea and the lineup was complete. In addition to Londoner Graeme on bass, the new incarnation featured Amanda Dahl from Stockholm, Sweden on drums, guitarist Iago from Galacia, Spain. Fronting the band is Dregas, the band’s sole American, hailing from Los Angeles, California.

With the new lineup and moniker in tow, the band was ready to take on the London rock scene. And they found an unusual route to do so.

Diving Deeper

The first step in conquering the rock music world with their international lineup and blues-influenced sound was getting animated — namely providing the music for an internet-based three part graphic novel called “Blues in Buckle.” The novel features the adventures of a fictional band and Deep Blue Sea was thrilled with the opportunity to give them a voice.

Recorded at the Harpenden R&B Festival, follows in the tradition of great rock and blues albums that had been recorded live.

But establishing a voice of their own has been just as thrilling a process. Their recently released album Live it Up was been released and made available on a number of formats and has reached the top ten in IBBA radio playlists during the summer of 2018. The band’s future seems bright, but even better, it’s a future that is still being written.

If you want to know what the blues will sound like in the future, Deep Blue Sea’s 2018’s release Live it Up would be a great place to start. Blues purists may object to the enormous debt the band owes to the realm of recent guitar-based rock, but make no mistake: Live it up is as worthy an inheritor of the mantle of Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson as any ‘pure’ blues band.

Lead singer Dregas’ vocals shine best on The Thrill of it All, but the album’s closer Wounded is where all the elements come together most urgently. Deep Blue Sea’s debut album follows in the tradition of strong live blues performances. And even better, it promises more great music to come.
