Travelling to the USA with Rogers

While travelling in the USA, using your cell phone can be costly. Rogers roaming airtime rates are $1.45/min, and text message rates are $0.70/text. Even if you buy a travel pack, you’re still going to be paying about $1/min on Rogers.

I unlocked my Blackberry Bold through Horizon Wireless. You can get your GSM phone unlocked for about $8-10. This will allow you to use any GSM sim card when travelling.

I had done a bit of research regarding US pre-paid SIM cards. You can get one from AT&T or T-mobile, but the rates will be quite expensive. The one I ended up going with was O2 wireless, which you can buy the sim card at Bestbuy for $10, which gives you a $7 airtime credit.

The rates are as follows: $0.14/minute and you can roam anywhere in AT&T coverage with no change in rate. Long distance is free to over 50 countries. Text messages are $0.05 to send or receive to anyone in the US or Canada. All in all, getting the prepaid SIM will save you a lot of money if you are planning on just making a few calls or a few text messages. The only downside is that you can’t use your Canadian phone number, and there are no data services with O2 wireless. But, if you’re phone has WiFi access, you can still access the internet through that.

PS3 price drop — in Canada!

Sony has cut the price of all PS3 systems immediately — the 80GB version will set you back $299 CDN (same price as in the US, so Canadians are getting a good deal). The price has already been dropped at Futureshop.ca, and it even includes a free game right now. The PS3 Slim will be released on September 1 in North America, and will include a 120GB hard drive, and a more energy efficient processor, which, I’ve read, will help reduce fan noise.

The new slim model won’t allow linux to be run on it, so if you’re interested in that, you better pick up one of the older versions. The old 160GB version will be cut to $399 and will be phased out, like the 80GB model.

I picked up a PS3 for $350 a few months ago, and it’s an excellent entertainment system. The games are great, and you can, of course, watch Blu-ray movies in full HD, and you can wirelessly stream movies from your computer to watch them on your PS3.

The Beatles: Rock Band Pre-Order in Canada

Looks like The Beatles: Rock Band is finally available for pre-order in Canada — and less than the US price! Amazon.ca is selling the premium bundle for $225 CDN, while it’s being sold in the US for $249. Amazon.ca ships for free. The bundle includes “The Beatles: Rock Band” software, Höfner Bass controller, The Beatles branded Rock Band Drums, Microphone, Microphone Stand, and Special Content.

UPDATE: Amazon.ca is offering pre-order club codes with your pre-order. Received mine on August 4, 2009. Awesome!

I’ve been neglecting writing in my blog for the past month and a half. It’s been pretty busy the last little while — moving into our new place, getting everything we need for our new place, plus slopitch, plus conferences, and, of course, my regular clinical work, which as been extremely heavy the last month and a half.

Anyways, hopefully it will all start to slow down soon. We’re putting in our sidewalk next week, and I have the week off to try and get some of the stuff done around the house. We have Lacey and Aaron’s wedding reception in a couple of weeks, so everything has to be nice and pretty for then.

Other than that, I’m off to Halifax this weekend for a CAIR conference. Hopefully I get to watch game 7 — should be a goodie!
