Pity then, that too much of it is bad for you in so many ways. The problem with all these pastimes is their common denominator. Modern society is fraught with levels of noise we scarcely notice. But people transported from the past would be panicked as much by the volume of noise as its unfamiliar sources.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you like a few draught beers before catching a live band, there’s sad, bad news: alcohol impairs the reflex action of the autonomic nervous system. That’s another way saying that booze trips up your body’s self-defence mechanism, exposing you to more noise than if you were sober.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People are more productive when they’re allowed to listen to their own choice of music while working. It’s even been showed to lessen the amount of pain felt during dental procedures. But here’s one last word of warning: If you block out noise by listening to music on headphones, beware the volume level. A 1996 New Scientist report found that the average setting on a personal stereo (Walkman, iPod or its equivalent) was the equivalent of around 130 decibels )the threshold for temporary hearing loss is around 90 decibels). A lot of those prior injuries are likely to never have been properly rehabilitated. So you've got the combined risk of developing a new injury and re-injuring an old one. As a result, middle-aged and older men need to take it a little easier on their bodies than they did in high school. But that's not what always happens.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: times new roman;"&gt;No Pain, No Gain?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: times new roman;"&gt;Paying attention to pain should be the cardinal rule of exercising. No person of any age should ignore pain during exercising, especially if it is sharp and acute. But older bodies are much more at risk than younger ones, since they are not quite so resilient. There's a psychological component to the way some men ignore an injury.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: times new roman;"&gt;Choosing Exercies&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: times new roman;"&gt;With a few exceptions, you can still do anything you want. But the exercise you choose, and how much you do of it, depends on your current physical condition. Vitamin D deficiency has profound effects on rat testicles, including dramatically reducing spermatogenesis. Vitamin D deficient male rats were 73% less likely to successfully father pups than vitamin D sufficient males. Vitamin D restored virility to vitamin D deficient male rats and should do the same for vitamin D deficient male humans.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Besides sex? Hair growth! In fact, hair follicles have large numbers of vitamin D receptors but their function is unknown. Although there are no human studies showing vitamin D will grow men a new head of hair, vitamin D like drugs do grow hair in mice.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What about weight? Although dozens of studies have found that those with the highest 25(OH)-vitamin D blood levels weigh the least, most vitamin D scientists explain this by pointing out that vitamin D is stored in fat tissue, thus lowering blood levels. Of course that does not preclude vitamin D from also having either a direct or indirect effect on weight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After sex, hair growth, and obesity, improving athletic performance would certainly make men pay attention to vitamin D. In fact, dozens of studies suggest vitamin D will improve athletic performance. If vitamin D improves athletic performance, then we'd predict physical fitness should peak in the late summer when 25(OH)-vitamin D levels peak. The only two studies that looked at season of the year and athletic performance of trained athletes found physical fitness peaked exactly then. Vitamin D also appears to maintain muscle mass in older people but, no one has reported similar studies of young adults. A recent review concluded that vitamin D is an authentic strength preserving hormone, at least in the elderly. There is no reason to think it has any less effect on vitamin D deficient younger persons.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Scientific literature indicates vitamin D lowers their risk of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune illness, depression and seventeen different types of cancer. Uncircumcised men had a more than two-fold increased risk of infection per sexual act compared with circumcised men (one in 80 versus one in 200). Unlike those studies, however, the present study was also able to take into account cultural characteristics that might be responsible for differences in sexual behavior. These differences could, in turn, account for differences in the risk of infection. But the researchers found that cultural differences in sexual behavior did not matter: when groups of men were excluded from the analysis based on ethnic or religious characteristics, the difference in probability of infection related to circumcision status did not change.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition to the results on circumcision, another significant result of the study was the high overall rate of per-contact infection. In past studies that attempted to calculate the probability of female-to-male infection through heterosexual sex, the cohorts consisted only of monogamous couples in which the female partners were HIV-positive. However, in some areas of Africa where HIV infection rates are highest, multiple, concurrent partnerships are more common than monogamous couplings.
