Of course, clogging in unavoidable in all plastic recorders - all my other recorders clog too so I don't think this detracts from the benefits of this model.

All in all, I have been very happy with mine and I think I could only do better by buying one of the handcrafted wood recorders that run upwards of two hundred.

The SkyActiv-CNG concept adopts a dual-fuel system that enables it to run on both petrol and compressed natural gas (CNG). CNG engines burn fuel at high pressures, and Mazda says “only minor modifications” were needed for the SkyActiv-G petrol engine because it already achieves a high 14.0 compression ratio.

The Mazda3 Hybrid is sedan-only, and Japan-only – at least for now. It borrows Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system – the battery, control system, electric motor and eCVT are the same as in the current Prius. The boot loses around 100 litres of volume, while kerb weight is up by 80 kg for a total of 1,390 kg.

The 82 PS/207 Nm hybrid drivetrain joins forces with Mazda’s own 2.0 litre SkyActiv-G four-cylinder petrol engine (detuned to 99 PS/142 Nm). JC08 fuel economy is pegged at 30.8 km per litre. Inside, there’s a revised instrument panel showing battery and charge information, plus a unique gear knob. The car has an EV mode and regenerative braking.

Tokyo 2013: Volkswagen twin up! is a plug-in hybrid

Volkswagen used its Tokyo 2013 stand to premiere a new concept car based on the up! city car. The Volkwagen twin up! concept car pairs a diesel engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to an electric motor.

All the drive components of the twin up! are positioned at the front of the car. The front overhang has been lengthened by 30 mm to accommodate the components. The drive unit consists of a 0.8 litre two-cylinder TDI diesel engine (drived from a 1.6 litre TDI four-cylinder) producing 35 kW as well as a 35 kW electric motor. Combined output is 55 kW and 215 Nm. The electric motor is integrated between the engine and the DSG, replacing the flywheel.

The ‘fuel’ that powers the drive components are all located at the rear. This consists of a 33 litre diesel fuel tank, a 8.6 kWh lithium ion battery, as well as a regular 12V battery for the auxiliary systems. The twin up! can run in zero emissions electric mode over a distance of 50 km, and up to a top speed of 125 km/h. If the diesel engine is engaged, you can drive up to 140 km/h.

Automakers, take note. When it comes to cars, older consumers are just as concerned with keeping up appearances as their younger counterparts. And they're looking to go green. Older consumers look for a quality ride that will give them pride and prestige when they are car shopping, a new Baylor University consumer study shows.

Environmentally-friendly or "green" hybrid cars allow older drivers to save money on gas while also filling them with a sense of pride for helping the environment -- a combination that drives customer loyalty. Researchers questioned 314 consumers age 60 and older who had bought hybrid cars. Their responses show that image is key, in addition to quality and price. "The findings suggest that elderly consumers are concerned about how they appear to others when driving a hybrid car," the researchers said in a release.

"They believe that driving a hybrid car builds a positive self-image of the people who drive them." In addition to being able and willing to pay more, post 50s are more likely to be environmentally friendly than younger people. A survey by retirement community developer Del Webb found 87 percent of older Americans have considered investing in green technology and 54 percent are interested in buying hybrid cars. Sales of hybrid cars have risen in recent years, rising by around 73 percent from 2011 to 2012 to an estimated 440,000 units, according to market research firm Mintel.

"This knowledge can help as a marketing tool," said Jay Yoo, assistant professor of family and consumer sciences at Baylor University, in a release. "Hybrid cars have increased in visibility because of their environmental consciousness. So people may be willing to pay an extra $5,000 or so in order to think, 'I'm great, and this is good for the environment'." The good news for automakers is that post 50s control a significant portion of disposable income in the economy and that the size of the older consumer group is still growing.

Q30 Concept Heralds New Infiniti Model

Infiniti has provided a first look at the Q30 Concept which will have its world premiere at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show as the next step in Infiniti’s foray into new premium segments.

According to Infiniti, the Q30 Concept signals the contemporary design vision for a compact Infiniti vehicle which will target a new generation of premium customers.

The concept is set to be unveiled at Infiniti’s press conference, scheduled for 10:15 am CET on September 10 in Hall 5 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Per the company, the Q30 Concept embodies Infiniti’s vision to deliver head-turning design, innovative materials with precise fit and finish and passionate craftsmanship, while provoking a radical shift in the premium compact segment.

No news or information has been revealed as to the powerplant for this concept. EV, hybrid or conventional? Many see in the picture a luxury-vehicle using Leaf propulsion components; others would liem to see the hybrid setup found in the Q50. Nothing has been confirmed and these are merely rumors.

Per Infiniti, the shape of the Q30 Concept deliberately challenges categorization – not a coupe, not a hatch and not a crossover but a fusion of the three body styles. It is designed for younger customers seeking an alternative to traditional premium compact vehicles and open to convention-challenging approaches.

Infiniti is confident this merging of the dynamic design and sportiness of a coupe, the roominess of a hatch and the higher stance of a crossover will resonate with these customers.

The Q30 Concept design language reflects the brand’s new look. The Infiniti design team, led by Executive Design Director Alfonso Albaisa, is said to have explored bolder, sensual sculpting and enhanced muscularity with the Q30 Concept as the brand’s design language continues to evolve.

Following the company’s branding and naming convention, this would be consider a car; it would’ve been designated QX30 Concept if it was to be considered a CUV.

The Q30 Concept signals the next step in an aggressive strategy to extend the Infiniti brand into new premium segments.

New-Gen BMW X5 Diesel On Its Way

BMW announced the new generation of its BMW X5 SUV will arrive in showrooms on November 16, 2013, including a new diesel version. The launch of this third generation X5 will include the diesel-powered BMW M50d M. More 6-Speed Transmission Production In The US by Toyota

Toyota is adding U.S. six-speed automatic transmission production in order to cope with demand.

Toyota announced it will increase 6-speed automatic transmission assembly and machining capacity by 20,000 per month in early 2015 at its Buffalo powertrain plant and Bodine Aluminum casting facilities in Missouri and Tennessee.

Toyota said this project will create more than 100 jobs.

Fifteen years after starting production in 1998, Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia (TMMWV) has built over 10 million powertrain (engines and transmissions), and today, Toyota is investing a combined $102 million in manufacturing facilities to meet increased consumer demand for Toyotas and the engines that power them.

$90 million will go directly to TMMWV, raising total plant investment to more than $1.4 billion and creating about 80 jobs.

TMMWV currently produces 500,000 transmissions per year, and this investment will increase production to 740,000 transmissions per year starting in 2015.

“This capacity increase helps us meet growing North American demand and is a part of our localization strategy to ‘build where we sell,’” said Millie Marshall, TMMWV senior vice president of manufacturing and administration. “This latest investment helps us better serve our North American customers and prepares us for an even brighter future.”

TMMWV builds six-speed transmissions for the Avalon, Camry, Highlander, Lexus RX350, Sienna and Venza.

From Mississippi to Indiana and in between, all of these cars are built in North America.

“Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia has been a dedicated corporate citizen for more than 15 years, and with today’s announcement has expanded eight times since first opening. This continued growth is a testament to the hard-working Toyota team members who have committed themselves to producing quality powertrain at the Buffalo plant,” said West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin. “The company’s continued investment in the Mountain State is also a testament to the business climate we’ve worked hard to create – one that encourages companies to expand, innovate, and create new jobs. Toyota also announced that Bodine Aluminum, a Toyota casting part manufacturing facility, will invest $11 million at its Troy, Mo. plant and $1 million in Jackson, Tenn. to provide transmission cases and housing parts to Toyota West Virginia.

“This expansion at Bodine Aluminum’s facility in Troy marks another important milestone for Bodine and Toyota, for this community, and for Missouri’s resurgent automotive manufacturing industry,” Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said. “As a state, we will keep pursuing proven, fiscally responsible policies and making smart, strategic investments to move this industry and our economy forward, so that auto industry jobs in Troy and throughout Missouri can continue to grow.”

Detroit Electric To Begin SP:01 Production Q4 In The Netherlands

The revived U.S. company operating under the name of the former Detroit Electric is being further delayed in plans to produce its SP:01 in the U.S., but meanwhile will begin European production fourth quarter this year in Holland.

In June we reported the company had pushed back an August start date to September for production of the $135,000 electric car in Wayne County, Mich.

Now it says it will begin the limited production run of 999 units at the company’s existing plant in the EV-friendly Netherlands.

The company is still seeking to meet U.S. federal safety standards so it can eventually produce the Lotus-based cars in Michigan as well.

Detroit Electric is an iconic name of an American electric car company that went out of business in 1939 and was “rebooted” in 2008 by UK-based former Lotus Engineering Group boss Albert Lam.

Lam said the idea is indeed to start an American company and is determined to see original goals met.

“We are Detroit Electric, not London Electric,” said Lam.

Toyota Sedan With ‘World’s Best’ Fuel Cell Stack - FCVR

As Toyota prepares its 2015 launch of a production fuel cell sedan powered by a “world’s best” fuel cell stack, the company has said it will reveal a close-up view of the car this November in Japan.

“At the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, we unveiled the FCVR fuel cell concept [pictured],” said Toyota Managing Officer Satoshi Ogiso this week at a Toyota media event in Michigan. “This year at the Tokyo Motor show, we will get a bit more specific, when we unveil a well-defined mid-size four-door sedan concept.”

The fuel cell car is intended as part of a long-term strategy Toyota envisions that will include also hybridized versions of all its vehicles and battery electric cars as battery technology advances to the point that the automaker deems it viable for its mass-market purposes.

After the November Tokyo reveal, in January 2014 Toyota’s sedan will make its North American debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, said Ogiso.

At that time, Ogiso said, Toyota’s Bob Carter, senior vice president, Automotive Operations, will provide further details on the role of Toyota’s U.S.-based engineering team in the FCV’s development as well as some preliminary plans for introduction into the U.S. market.

“For now, I can tell you that the hydrogen fuel cell stack is currently developing 3kw per liter of power density,” said Ogiso. “We believe that’s a ‘world’s best’ and about twice that of the fuel stack we have been using for the Highlander fuel cell hybrid vehicle.”

The 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid

Amongst other things, the prestigious New York Auto Show 2013 became the proverbial launch pad for Nissan's first ever hybrid model, the 2014 Pathfinder. When this Japanese automobile giant first announced their intent to develop a hybrid concept about two years ago, it was assumed that their next Altima sedan would make use of such technology. To find that Nissan's foray into the world of hyper-fuel-efficiency is to be marked by a crossover SUV comes as a surprise, albeit a pleasant one.

The hybrid model is to mirror the exterior design of the previously launched Pathfinder model. It has a tall, rugged look, the sharpness of which is somewhat balanced out by curvaceous lines and soft, clean edges. Unlike other contemporary, mid-sized crossovers, Nissan's hybrid has a seating capacity of 7, arranged in the classic 3 row format. Other than the innovation of LED taillights and hybrid-specific information screens, there have been few alterations in the original Pathfinder's interior or external design.

In terms of the hybrid driveline the new Pathfinder shall be using, the specifics are nothing short of impressive. It is empowered with a 2.5 liter, supercharged 4 cylinder engine alongside a 15 kW electric motor; together they produce 250 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. This means that while the hybrid produces less horsepower and towing capacity than the last generation model, it offers more torque and 24% better fuel economy. The estimated fuel economy is 25 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on highways, and 26 mpg combined. The only shortcoming perhaps is that the Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid does not have an electric-only mode for low speeds, though the gas engine shuts down during deceleration and/or coasting.

What is extremely interesting about this upcoming Nissan model is that it is expected to be priced roughly $3,000 above the original model, which would be around $35-37,000. This means that it would cost significantly lesser than other 2014 Crossover SUV models, which provide but little more than the Pathfinder Hybrid. This model shall thus occupy a special space in the automobile market. It is the first non-luxury, fuel efficient and affordable crossover SUV to enter the market.

When the Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid will be launched in the market, reportedly late this summer, it is likely to add more fuel to the fiery battle of the green (fuel-efficient, hybrid) crossovers. Currently, all the big players in the business are looking to combine sporty-looks with utility and luxury with fuel efficiency. Nissan has now added affordability into the equation, thus widening its potential consumer base. It is unlikely that other mid-segment brands will not follow suit. Therefore, one may assume that good times lie ahead of SUV-enthusiasts who unfortunately have a limited budget. As and when these manufacturers shall compete with one another for better models offering more and more at lower prices, buyers can be assured to have a wider range of options available to them, especially if hybrid SUVs are what they are looking for.

Nissan Management Changes to Benefit Electric Car Sales

Automobile giant Nissan Motor has this week confirmed that the company's chief operating officer will now take control of the electric vehicle division. This will be in addition to his high-profile role at the top of the company's pecking order and while a little disappointing in the short term, due to the fact it occurred because of disappointing sales, it is good news for the future.

The company had hoped to sell 20,000 units of its award-winning Nissan Leaf electric vehicle into the US market during 2012 although unfortunately final sales were less than 10,000 last year. This prompted a major rethink with regards to the company's electric vehicle business hence the management shakeup and more high-profile strategy going forward.

The Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf is one of the more popular electric vehicles available today and was being used by Nissan as a means to crack the US market. While the company did increase sales dramatically compared to 2011, it was from a relatively low base and no progress was made with regards to the 20,000 unit target.

Interestingly, the company seems to have recognised the failing sales of the Nissan Leaf during 2012 having brought out what is known as an "entry level" version. This was ahead of the launch of the Nissan Leaf 2013 upgrade which will incorporate the most efficient electric motor technology available, as well as additional technology for in car systems and also offer a journey capacity approaching 150 miles.

Is Nissan serious about the electric vehicle market?

While there is no getting away from the fact that sales of electric vehicles overall were disappointing during 2012 compared to projections, this is not the end of the world. We must appreciate that the worldwide economy is struggling, individual countries are struggling to control their budgets and to all intents and purposes electric vehicles are not exactly top of the political agenda.

However, during this difficult period for automobile sales as a whole the likes of Nissan have always been very supportive of the industry both in terms of time, money and effort. Only last year the company was suggesting that electric car sales would make up 10% of worldwide automobile sales by the end of the decade which was certainly a very positive forecast going forward. Whether or not sales will reach this target during the current decade remains to be seen although there are signs of movement.

Too far to turn back now

The fact that the electric car industry has been around for in excess of 200 years is often overlooked by the general public. Electric cars have experienced a number of false dawns over the last 30 or 40 years and indeed the debacle of the turn-of-the-century involving the EV1 perfectly illustrates this fact. However, companies such as Nissan, governments around the world and, to a lesser extent, consumers have invested far too much time, money and effort to allow the industry to fail once again.

Recently we saw the likes of China stepping forward to support the electric vehicle industry, we saw the Chinese authorities funding local companies to acquire overseas electric vehicle assets and the government of China also issued a number of very upbeat and promising sales forecasts. There is momentum behind the electric vehicle market, there is finance available and the technology is certainly improving on a month by month basis. It will be interesting to see whether 2013 is indeed the turning point many are predicting for the EV market and whether those who have fallen by the wayside, reduced their expenditure and dismissed their exposure will regret their relatively short-term approach to a long-term industry.
