A swimsuit, bathing suit, or swimming costume is an item of clothing designed to be worn while engaging in a water-based activity or water sports, such as swimming, water polo, diving, surfing, water skiing, or during activities in the sun, such as sun bathing.

Female bathing costumes were derived from those worn at Bath and other spas. It would appear that until the 1670s nude female bthing in the spas was the norm and that after that time women bathed clothed. Celia Fiennes gave a detailed description of the standard ladies' bathing costume in 1687:

Flannel, however, was a common fabric for sea bathing costumes as many believed the warmer fabric was necessary in cold water.

In the United States, beauty contests of women in bathing costumes became popular from the 1880s. Norman Rockwell judged the Miss America 1922 bathing beauty contest along with Howard Chandler Christy and James Montgomery Flagg. Kellerman changed the suit to have long arms and legs and a collar, still keeping the close fit that revealed the shapes underneath. The development of new fabrics allowed for new varieties of more comfortable and practical swim wear.

Due to the figure-hugging nature of these garments, glamour photography since the 1940s and 1950s has often featured people wearing swimsuits. This subset of glamour photography eventually evolved into swimsuit photography exemplified by the Sports Illustrated annual swimsuit issues.

At the same time, fashion designer Rudi Gernreich introduced the monokini, a topless suit for women consisting of a modest bottom supported by two thin straps. Although not a commercial success, the suit opened eyes to new design possibilities.

There are many reasons why people wear certain swimsuits. The swim trunks are the most common type of swimsuit seen on men. These trunks are loose fitting and very comfortable compared to more constricting suits.

The popularity of the thong spread to various parts of the world in the late 80s.

In the US, the thong had to gain acceptance before it gained popularity. Today, the thong is one of the best selling styles of undergarment in the world. Because most articles of this nature are written by women, I thought it would be nice to offer a male point of view on the sex appeal of various types of panties and why men love them.

G-STRINGS

No article about plus size panties would be complete without a word about g-strings. Offering almost no rear coverage, this panty has a triangular strip of fabric of varying widths, with strings in the back and around the waist.

Commonly referred to as "butt floss" because they are made with the least amount of material, G-Strings are a woman's best defense against panty lines. G-Strings look best on the woman who has a rounder, more well-defined ass.

Boy shorts, also known as boy short panties, boys' cut, booty shorts, shorties, tap panties or boy-leg briefs are a sort of lingerie that goes all the way down the hips. Some stop short of the length of the hip to reveal a portion of a woman's "cheeks" for titillation. If you have nice, plump, round buttocks, boy shorts will accentuate your assets.

BRIEFS

Briefs are waist high and generally end just below the navel. Different styles of briefs include classic cut, high-cut or French cut, and boylegs. There are hipsters similar to briefs, which are worn lower on the hip.

Gloves have separate sheaths or openings for each finger and the thumb; if there is an opening but no covering sheath for each finger they are called "fingerless gloves". History of Sexy Lingerie – Staying Abreast of the Silhouette Ah, the female silhouette. Women have worn everything from a heavy whalebone contraption with laces and pulleys, all the way to the light silky sexy lingerie of today. To try to make some sense of the transformation of the silhouette over the years, let’s look at the history of sexy lingerie – why it changed, and how it changed.

The first “lingerie”? When we think of sexy lingerie, we think of light, thin material, usually see-through, draped adoringly over the female body, covering just enough to titillate the impressionable male. But well before Christ, on the island of Crete, in the Mediterranean Sea, women were very bold. Their idea of lingerie was a boned bodice corset, designed not for support, but to tease men, by pushing their breasts up and out, literally exposing them in their entire splendor. Throughout time, as each vision of the silhouette emerged, clothing was created to fit and accentuate this shape.

The silhouette goes from profound to padded Society in the Middle Ages felt that the silhouette should be restrained, especially the breasts, which they thought should be firm and small. In those days, women wore many styles of corsets over their dresses, all with the similar purpose of flattening their breasts. Although the whalebone structure of the corset still kept women tightly silhouetted, there was a definite movement to incorporate the artistry that marked the era. Corsets were decorated with beautiful embroidery, ribbons and laces. Later in the 18th century, people started rebelling against many things and corsets were no exception. The softer silhouette is highlighted By the early 1800s, the silhouette was still enhanced, calling for the support that the old corset had given. So the corset returned, but with more elaborate methods of construction. Boning was still used, but in smaller sections, allowing for more movement.

During the 1840s, with the much-exaggerated silhouette for women, whalebone came back into use, but this time with huge hoops and crinolines, covered with all kinds of fabric and trim. In those days, a man knew he’d found a fashionable woman if he could put his hands around her waist. And because women were still trying to attract men, they cinched themselves up even tighter.

The hoop-and-crinoline look was soon replaced by the soft-S silhouette, still using the corset, but adding the bustle to the back. Now they’d created an exaggerated bottom. Of course, the men liked this because it gave them more opportunities to view those sexy bustles.

As fashion design became more innovative, more varieties of corsets were created. Now you could get a lightly-boned corset for the morning, a boneless corset for the beach, an elastic corset for horseback riding, and a jersey corset for bicycle riding. With all the activities women participated in, think of how many corsets they would need!

The corset is extended – then expended By the end of the 19th century, the corset had become a supporter not only of breasts, but of the newly-created stockings. Stockings were held up by garters and suspenders attached to the corset – a very complex system of rigging.

Sexy lingerie was about to take a whole new turn. With the advent of the industrial revolution, and the invention of the sewing machine, Germany and France opened the first corset factories.

In 1913, Mary Phelps Jacob created a new type of bra. It was much softer and much shorter than a corset. And it allowed the breasts to be shaped in their natural state. After World War I, women began to enter the workforce and corsets were definitely not appropriate for wear in factories. Fashion changed dramatically – the boyish silhouette was in. The quest for flat chests and stomachs, and straight hips and buttocks, led the fashion industry to create the liberty bodice, the chemise, and bloomers – loose-fitting and light. And a long-overdue substitute for plain old white appeared – pastel colored lingerie. The corset was no longer needed – except the bottom part that held up the stockings. So the corset was shortened right down to a belt – the suspender belt.

The woman’s feminine side once again became the priority. Women were encouraged to look well-proportioned, full-figured, but still reasonably slim in the hips. Now women had a full set of lingerie to outfit themselves – a breast-enhancing brassiere, an elastic suspender belt, and the girdle, that kept all the curves in the right places.

One of the biggest advancements in the lingerie industry came in the 1930s, when Dunlop Rubber invented Lastex. Lastex was an elastic fiber that could be interwoven with the fabric used to make lingerie fashions. Now the industry could make lingerie in various sizes, to properly fit a woman’s shape.

Not very sexy, to say the least. After the war, lingerie consisted of the basic bras and suspender belts. This was the norm for most women. Over in America, the lingerie industry was making its own mark. The market was flooded with all kinds of innovations to help women look sexy. For example, Howard Hughes created a new bra – a special wire-reinforced design for Jane Russell. Lingerie is a term for fashionable and possibly alluring undergarments. The term in the French language applies to all undergarments for either gender. In English it is applied specifically to those undergarments designed to be visually appealing or erotic. Lingerie usually incorporating one or more flexible, stretchy materials like Lycra, nylon (nylon tricot), polyester, satin, lace, silk and Sheer fabric which are not typically used in more functional, basic cotton undergarments.

Etymology

The word derives from the French word linge, "washables"—as in faire le linge, "do the laundry"—and ultimately from lin for washable linen, the fabric from which European undergarments were made before the general introduction of cotton from Egypt and then from India. It is commonly pronounced in English with a faux French pronunciation.

Origins

The concept of lingerie as visually appealing undergarment was developed during the late nineteenth century. Lady Duff-Gordon of Lucile was a pioneer in developing lingerie that freed women from more restrictive corsets. Through the first half of the 20th century, women wore underwear for three primary reasons: to alter their outward shape (first with corsets and later with girdles or bras), for hygienic reasons, or for modesty. Before the invention of crinoline, women's underwear was often very large and bulky. During the late 19th century, corsets became smaller, less bulky and constricting, and were gradually supplanted by the brassiere, first patented in the 20th century by Mary Phelps Jacob. When the First World War broke out, women found themselves filling in men's work roles, creating a demand for more practical undergarments. Manufacturer began to use lighter and more breathable fabrics.

As the 20th century progressed, underwear became smaller and more form fitting. In the 1960s, lingerie manufacturers such as Frederick's of Hollywood begin to glamorize lingerie. The lingerie industry expanded in the 21st century with designs that double as outerwear. The French refer to this as 'dessous-dessus' which basically means innerwear as outerwear.

Market structure

The lingerie market at the turn of 21st century was driven by the advent of modern technologies and fabrics that help in designing innovative products such as laser-cut seamless bras and moulded T-shirt bras. Designers are putting greater emphasis on rich-looking fabrics, laces, embroideries and brighter, more daring colors.

The global lingerie market in 2003 was estimated at $29 billion. Bras accounted for 56 per cent while briefs represented 29 per cent of the lingerie market in 2005. The world’s largest lingerie manufacturer, Victoria's Secret, operates almost exclusively in North America. The European market is quite fragmented, with Triumph International and DB Apparel leading the market.

Since the mid-1990s, women have had more choice in bra sizes; the focus has changed from choosing bras in an average size to wearing bras that actually fit perfectly. In the UK, for instance, the media is fueling an awareness campaign about the need for each woman to have a proper bra fitting before every purchase.
