64GB iPhone and 128GB iPod Touch Possible in 1st Quarter 2010?

Toshiba announced that they have launched a 64GB embedded NAND flash memory module. The new chip offers 64GB on a single chip and will start mass production in the first quarter of 2010.

The reason the largest iPhone (32GB) currently has 1/2 the memory of the largest iPod touch (64GB) is that the iPhone can only house a single NAND flash chip while the iPod touch can accommodate two. The additional space in the iPhone is taken up by its communication hardware. This new advancement should allow for 64GB iPhones and 128GB iPod touches in 2010.

Last year, Toshiba first announced their 32GB NAND flash modules which apparently ended up being used in the latest iPhone revision. iSuppli’s teardown identified Toshiba as the supplier of the iPhone 3GS’s flash memory.

Installation
============
- Under your PC/MAC/device, extract the content of the downloaded file & copy the CAB file to your device.
- Under your device, run any File Explorer application; go to the folder where the CAB file is copied; run the CAB file.
- If your device got a "Win32 error", please download & install the WMP-OCX-WM5-square-fix.cab (for square devices) or the WMP-OCX-fix.cab (for other devices).

Operations
==========
- Since S2P simply scans music files in your storage card, it's suggested to have your music files well organized by folders. So that you can browse your music files through the folders instead of a plain list. (e.g. \Artist Name\Album Name\Music title.mp3)
- When browsing, press the folder name to list all music files under that folder, including subfolders; or press the arrow button to list the subfolders.
- Press any one of the filename to play.
- To go back to the music file list, press the top left back button.
- To view the current album list, press the top right icon. Then press any one on the list to play that music.
- To go back to the single music view, press the top right icon again.
- On the single music view, tap the screen to call up the timeline. Press the left repeat icon to repeat the current playing album; press the right shuffle icon to play the whole music list randomly. When both icons are on, only the current album will be played randomly.
- Under the music playback screen, slide up or down the left or right side edge of the album art will change to the Album View screen in Landscape mode. To go back to the normal playback screen, slide up or down the left or right side edge of the album art.
- Under the music playback screen, double tap the album title area will change to the Album View screen in Portrait mode. To go back to the normal playback screen, double tap the album title area again.
- The hardware keys are:
Accept - quit
End/OK - minimize
Vol Up/Down or DPAD Up/Down - volume control
DPAD Action - play/pause
DPAD Left/Right - previous/next
Left/Right soft key - previous/next album

Settings
========
The behaviour of S2P can be altered by changing the following registry values stored at \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\A_C\S2P\
- OffLCD - the no. of timeout seconds that S2P will turn off the screen when using battery; default is 25.
- ACOffLCD - the no. of timeout seconds that S2P will turn off the screen when using external power; default is 0 (i.e. disable).
- SaveLastMusic - remember the last playing music when quit; default is 1.
- AlwaysLoadEmbedAlbumPic - always load the embedded album pic when start to play a file; default is 0.
- ResumeAfterCall - resume the playback after a call is finished; default is 1.
- FullScreenAlbum - to display a full-screen album art; default is 1. (it's not usable for square screen device).
- NoSoftKey - to hide the bottom soft music control keys; default is 0.
- FastAlbumPic - retrieve the embedded album pic in faster speed but some problematic pic will not be retrieved properly; if that happen, disable it; default is 1.
- AlbumLayout - 0, 1 & 2.
- ShakeAction - for Diamond/Pro only; 0 to disable; 1 to go to next song; 2 to go to next shuffle song.

The Nokia X3 is our first glimpse into the new Xseries and we’re excited to see how things have changed since XpressMusic ran the show. And they have changed, the new angular look is a testament to that. The S40 on the inside has changed as well, throwing Ovi Store and basic multi-tasking into the mix.

Currently the Xseries is composed of two completely different phones. The Nokia X6 is a touch phone running Symbian, and the X3 is an affordable Series 40 slider. It packs stereo speakers, excellent audio quality and a built-in FM radio antenna for a complete sonic experience. All right, we said affordable, so don’t go looking for top-notch gear beside the obvious full music package.

Nokia X3 introduces us to the Xseries

The Nokia X3 runs the Series 40 6th edition but it’s unlike any S40 handset we’ve seen before. For a brief, joyful moment, we thought Nokia have finally given in and added multitasking. The truth turned out to be different but still there were small steps taken in the right direction. And you should see what they’ve done with the Gallery – it’s only a notch bellow the S60 one.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and let’s take a look at the Nokia X3 pros and cons.

* S40 interface feels clunky and out of date
* No true multitasking
* No smart dialing or an office document viewer
* A bunch of software bugs
* Video recording maxes out at QCIF@15fps

The specs look like nothing to be excited about but a shortish feature list never tells the whole story. So, think before you go “Nah, it sounds lame”, because you’ll be wrong about sound. We spent several days with it and now we’re ready to tell you the story behind those specs, the good, the bad and the ugly, the whole thing.

Final words

We have to admit the Nokia X3 is a tough sell, and that has almost nothing to do with the competition. In fact, there are only few top manufacturers that take music phones as seriously as Nokia. So, whether it’s XpressMusic or X3 (we like that one better), Nokia phones are having a ball. But there are so many of them scattered across different price ranges and platforms that any newcomer inevitably risks not getting enough attention.

The X3 ventures to offer many nice UI features such as active standby, threaded messaging, Ovi Contacts, Maps for S40, the new image gallery and the Ovi Store and it’s a versatile portable music player with an accent on FM radio among everything else. But it does look sloppy – both in terms of hardware and software.

Even if you look past the bad slider (maybe we just got a bad sample), it’s hard not to balk at that poor display. And what about loudness – a Below Average result from the loudspeaker of a music phone? Sure, music sounds quite good on it, but only if you can hear it.

On the software part we wish we saw real multitasking on S40. Competing manufacturers have long offered that on their feature phones. A document viewer wouldn’t have hurt either. Some social networking integration won’t be bad too.

And there are also the the software bugs that irked us. Getting an app for your highly promoted service that doesn’t work properly straight out of the box looks kinda bad to us.

Sure, we quite liked the Nokia X3 for its musical prowess, but the competition is tough, so we have to wonder if the X3 will make its mark or will it just be the Nokia X6 rouge brother that nobody in the family likes to talk about.

So let’s break it down for you as we see it. Close to that price range the Nokia 6303 classic can match the Nokia X3 spec for spec, and it even has an autofocus camera with a LED flash and VGA@15fps video recording. It’s more compact and has some metal on the body. On paper, the screen is the same size and resolution, but in reality, it’s much better. On the downside, it only has one speaker, comes with a 1GB microSD card, supporting only 4GB cards. But, the Nokia 6303 classic is cheaper.

The Nokia 5235 Comes With Music is another option – a 3.2” touchscreen of 360x640 pixel resolution, 3G with 3.6Mbps HSDPA, Symbian skills and a built-in GPS. Oh, and 12 to 16 months of free subscription to the Comes With Music service, which means you can download all the music you want without paying a penny. If you already have a big music collection, you can just go for the Nokia 5230, which loses the 3G and GPS for Wi-Fi and a slimmer profile.

And here’s a previous generation Nokia music phone – the 5630 XpressMusic. It’s small, it weighs 83g, runs Symbian on a fast 600MHz CPU, has 3G with 10.2Mbps HSDPA and 2Mbps HSUPA, Wi-Fi and though it costs more, it comes with a 4GB microSD card. It’s also got the audio quality to match.

Nokia 5630 XpressMusic

All told, we can’t help but wonder if the Nokia X3 is not an old, forgotten design Nokia stumbled upon and decided to dust off. There are better phones on the market already, so the prognosis for the Nokia X3 doesn’t look good. But Symbian and touchscreen are not everyone’s cup of tea, so a new generation music feature phone can hope to do reasonably well in the lower midrange. And the Nokia X3 price tag is an important ingredient in the mix.

This is the twelfth development milestone and the first beta release of the mobile version of Firefox, for testing purposes only, intended to:

The initial focus of Fennec development was on building a new user experience that reflects Firefox's design principles, adding touch screen support and other interactions appropriate for mobile phones and other handheld devices, while preserving leading features like the Smart URL Bar ("awesome bar") and support for add-ons.

There's a lot to fall for in Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. Possibly the hottest looker of a PocketPC is also heavy on skill. Heavy enough to not just scratch out a living as a one-hit-wonder but aim for the WinMo top.

The extra solid metal looks, gorgeous screen and the right pinch of novelty called XPERIA panels look to us as good enough reasons for the X1 to be hyped and romanticized. By the way, romance or not, Sony Ericsson and HTC have hit their perfect shape with that one.

The XPERIA X1 is surely the most eagerly anticipated device in the world of Windows Mobile. Getting our review out was surely quite a wait too, we know. Better late than ever, as some folks say. We'll still have our say 'cause for the XPERIA it's a load of high expectations to live up to.

The XPERIA X1 is one of the best-equipped Windows Mobile devices to ever set foot on the market. But hey, is it not the most elaborate and charismatic PocketPC too? As to skills, the high-res 3" screen and the full QWERTY keyboard seem the most important parts of its magnificent ammo though its processing power is not to be neglected either.

Many devices find their identity in standing up to a rival. The XPERIA though is fatefully bound to always have one foot on alien ground. The haunting name for the X1 is HTC - manufacturer and main competitor.

As you probably guessed by yourselves the main alternative to the XPERIA X1 is HTC Touch Pro. It has a smaller screen than the XPERIA X1 and features a slightly lower resolution. In addition it is heavier and, if we were to be asked, not nearly as hot as the XPERIA.

However, the QWERTY keyboard of the Touch Pro is well ahead of what the X1 has to offer. The Touch Pro accelerometer and active magnetic stylus are small but nice touches that add to its allure. There are other advantages too, but we'll try to list them in the dedicated chapter of this review.

Furthermore, the Touch Pro had a nice two-month advantage since it hit the shelves back in August and this could be quite decisive for the sales. After all two months is quite a long time in the world of mobile phones, isn't it?

Step-by-Step Guide to Unlock iPhone 3G

The iPhone dev team released the much awaited software solution to unlock iPhone 3G so that users can use any GSM carrier's SIM, a perfect New Year gift for all those waiting to unlock their iPhone 3G.

Here is a detailed step-by-step guide to unlock iPhone 3G using Dev team's yellowsn0w application.

Some important points to note before we start:

Hacking your iPhone could void its warranty.
Dev team's yellowsn0w application is still in beta and has not worked for all iPhone 3G users but they are working hard to fix the issues and have been releasing new versions of their application.
Since one of the important requirements to unlock iPhone 3G is to upgrade to iPhone firmware 2.2 (as it exclusivley works with baseband firmware 02.28.00 which comes bundled with firmware 2.2), you need to be aware that iPhone firmware 2.2 breaks Turbo SIM (in case you are using it) - the hardware method to unlock iPhone 3G so if Dev team's software method which is still in beta does not work you might not be able to use your iPhone 3G.
This step-by-step guide is exclusively to unlock iPhone 3G. We haven't tried it with the 1st generation iPhone. We would sugges you use QuickPwn to unlock the 1st gen iPhone.
The current version of yellowsn0w does not support SIMs with PIN enabled. So please disable any PIN you may have on that SIM before using this guide. The Dev team are currently working to support SIMs with PIN so this is a temporary limitiation.

Preparatory steps before unlocking your iPhone 3G:

Dev team's unlocking solution works exclusively with baseband firmware 02.28.00 which comes bundled with firmware 2.2, so you will need to upgrade your iPhone 3G to iPhone firmware 2.2 without preserving its baseband and jailbreak it. You can check your firmware and modem firmware(baseband) versions via Settings->General->About and look for Version and Modem Firmware. iPhone 3G firmware Version should be 2.2 (5G77) and Modem Firmware should be 02.28.00.
You need to first jailbreak your iPhone 3G to unlock it. You can checkout this simple step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn for Mac users or this step-by-step guide to jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn for Windows users.

Once your iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.2 (with baseband firmware 02.28.00) is jailbroken, you are ready to unlock iPhone 3G.

Unlock iPhone 3G using yellowsn0w:

Launch Cydia from your iPhone 3G's home screen.
You need to add the source of the yellowsn0w application. So tap Manage, one of the tabs at the bottom and then tap Sources.

Tap the “Edit” button on the top-right corner of the screen.

Then tap on the “Add” button on the top-left corner of the screen.

You’ll be prompted to add a Cydia/APT URL. Enter http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/ as the source URL for the yellowsn0w application and then tap the "Add Source" button.

Once the source has been added press the "Return to Cydia" button at the bottom of the screen.

Then tap the "Done" button at the top-right of the screen. This completes the steps to add the source for the yellowsn0w application so you can install it.

Tap on the apt9.yellowsn0w.com source that was just added from the list of sources.

Tap on apt9.yellowsn0w.com again from the list of packages.

You will get an option to install the yellowsn0w application. Tap the "Install" button on the top-right corner of the screen.

Tap the "Confirm" button on the top-right corner of the screen.

This will install the yellowsn0w application, you will see the progress on the next screen and the "Return to Cydia" button will come up once installation is complete.

Tap on the "Return to Cydia" button and press the "Home" button on your iPhone 3G to go back to the home screen.
You need to reboot your iPhone 3G so that the yellowsn0w application which is a small daemon is launched on boot up. Press the “Sleep” button and hold it until you see the “Slide to power off” message. Then slide to switch off the iPhone.
Once your iPhone 3G has shutdown, insert the desired SIM card and restart your iPhone 3G.
Once your iPhone boots up and you see the “Slide to Unlock” screen, wait for around 10 to 15 seconds (may be more) to see if your iPhone 3G picks up the carrier signal.
The Dev team has reported that there is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. So if your iPhone 3G doesn't pick up the carrier signal after reboot then try to try to pull out the SIM card and re-insert it, wait for another 10 - 15 seconds and see if your iPhone 3G picks up the signal of the carrier.

If it does then you have successfully unlocked your iPhone 3G.

Some Tips to unlock iPhone 3G if the above procedure does not work:

If the above guide did not unlock your iPhone 3G, then try some of the workarounds mentioned below as it has helped some readers to successfully unlock their iPhone 3G.

Method 1 (via Hackint0sh):

Airplane mode on.
Airplane mode off, you should see "searching" and should pick up the carrier's signal.

Method 2 (via Hackint0sh):

Launch Moble terminal app (you can install it via Cydia).
Type yellowsn0w -r wait for a moment 10 sec
Type yellowsn0w -c wait for a moment 10 sec if you get NO SERVICE wait until u get 5 dot and run it again if you don't encounter NO SERVICE just run next command
Type yellowsn0w -r
Type yellowsn0w -a if you get busy message in under 15 sec and don't see NO SERVICE it's unsucesfull and you have to do -r and -a again until it loads to NO SERVICE and wait untill it changes to 5 dots and wait for 10sec
Airplane mode on (keep it in that mode for more than 10 seconds)
Airplane mode off, you should see "searching" and should pick up the carrier's signal.

If that didn't help:

Type yellowsn0w -r once and after 5 sec wait 1 min.
Airplane mode on (keep it in that mode for more than 10 seconds).
Airplane mode off, you should see "searching" and should pick up the carrier's signal.

Note: Ignore the Unknown message (0xe3ff8000), the command still works even if you get it.

Method 3:

This was suggested by Anton, one of our readers (Thanks Anton!)

Install BossPrefs via Cydia.
Disable all Functions with BossPrefs (don't worry if you can't disable EDGE)
Reboot your Phone with BossPrefs (not in the normally way - important!)
Wait 1.30 min when you see the Lockscreen.
Take out your Sim and re-insert it.
Wait a moment (30 seconds).
Go on Settings and Turn on the Airplane mode (keep it in that mode for more than 10 seconds).
Turn off Airplane Mode.
Your iPhone 3G should pick up the carrier's signal.

Method 4 (via YouTube, user reda92):

Reset Network Settings. 99% of your success rate will depend on this. (You can find this in settings - general and to the bottom you'll see a "reset" menu in which you can find this)
Reboot your iPhone
Wait a little over a min.
Remove your SIM card and re-insert it back in
Wait 30 sec.
Turn on Airplane mode and wait 10 sec. (This is important as well)
Turn of Airplane mode, you should see "searching" and should pick up the carrier's signal.

If these workarounds did not help unlock your iPhone 3G, then report the problem to the Dev team using this link.

Update (Jan 7th, 2009):

Dev Team have updated their yellowsn0w app to unlock iPhone 3G. It fixes even more problems.

Jailbreak App - Lockdown Allows you to Password Protect your iPhone Apps

Its amazing that even after a year and half of iPhone's launch, it still draws attention, I have friends who want to check out my iPhone 3G. I have no problems with that, but the concern I usually have is that I don't want them to access some of the iPhone apps such as iPhone's Mail App or maybe tomorrow an iPhone App which has my bank account details etc.

Thankfully I stumbled upon a jailbreak iPhone app aptly named Lockdown which protects access to iPhone apps to address my paranoia.

Call me paranoid, but I have waiting for Apple to release a feature which gives me the ability to password protect an iPhone app or apps just the way you can set a passcode to gain access to iPhone's home screen.

iPhone app - Lockdown meets that requirement perfectly. It gives you the ability to password protect your iPhone apps.

The user interface of the iPhone app is quite simple. You need to first set the safety word which will come into picture if you have forgotten the master password. You need to then set the master password which can be used to unlock an application.

Once that is done, it provides you with an option to either:

Lock All Applications
Unlock All applications (applicable only if you have locked any application)

It also provides you an option to lock System Applications individually such as iPhone's Mail App, Contacts App etc or iPhone apps that you have downloaded for the App Store.

Interestingly jailbreak iPhone apps show up under System Apps. You can tap on any of the applications which prompts you to either Lock or Unlock the application, you can tap on "Lock" to password protect the App or "Unlock" to remove the password protection for an iPhone app.

So the next time you try to launch an iPhone app that you have locked, it will prompt you for the master password that you had set. After you have entered the password you need to tap on the "Launch" button to launch the locked iPhone app (assuming that the password entered is correct). I would have preferred the functionality similar to iPhone's passcode feature so that the iPhone apps launch immediately after entering the passcode rather than the additional step of tapping on the "Launch" button.

As you can see its a simple app that allows you to lockdown access to an iPhone app or apps. You can install Lockdown for free on your jailbroken iPhone via Cydia.

The developer has provided the following warning that you should remember without fail before upgrading to a new version of Lockdown:

"If you are upgrading, make sure you unlock your locked apps before upgrading or you will not be able to do so ever."

Introduction

Released earlier this fall, Motorola's Krave ZN4 from Verizon Wireless joins a strong crowd of competitors in the U.S. touch screen phone market. Unlike the Apple iPhone or the latest BlackBerry Storm, the Krave is no smartphone, but it offers features and design that is unique in its own right.

The Krave touts not one, but two innovative touch screens, a one-of-a-kind design and superior multimedia services including live television from Verizon's VCAST Mobile TV, Rhapsody music service and the VZ Navigator GPS application.
Despite being a flip phone, the Krave's transparent cover only enhances the phone's vibrant 2.8-inch TFT LCD screen underneath. Additional highlights include a 2.0-megapixel camera, MP3 music player software, 3.5mm headset jack, full QWERTY keyboard and Bluetooth 2.0

Design

The Krave's innovative design is truly eye-catching. With two levels of touch-screen menus, this Motorola handset exudes style and technological savoir-faire. Smaller and easier to carry in a pocket than most touch screen phones, the Krave weighs 4.59 oz. and measures approximately 4.13" (H) x 2.0" (W) x 0.75" (D).

It has a touch-sensitive transparent flip cover with tactile feedback. Users can conveniently view and access commonly used features. A circular Motorola emblem that doubles as a speaker to turn the Krave into a portable music player. Opening the flip answers calls, and the speaker's opposite side reveals the earpiece.

Opened, the top of the inside screen are two buttons - one button for power and one "home" button that will return users back to the main screen. An internal microphone is located below the screen.

Both of the Krave's touch screen offer iPhone-like navigation by sliding a finger up and down the screen.

On the left side of the phone there's a covered 3.5mm headset jack, and below that are volume controls and a covered Micro-USB port for transferring data from the phone to another device. The Krave's right side bears a camera-dedicated key, covered microSD memory card slot, "voice" key for recording voice memos and sending voice-activated commands, and a screen lock that deactivates the touch screen cover, preventing users from making unintended calls and exchanges.

The Krave's rubberized back won't get sullied by smudgy fingerprints like other shiny-surfaced touch screen phones. This is a plus considering that consumers will already have two touch screens to worry about keeping clean.

Also located on the back of the phone is the 2.0-megapixel camera/camcorder lens, recessed to prevent scratching and smearing. In the phone's left-hand corner is an enclosure for a hand strap.

Watching mobile TV and viewing picture slideshows on the Krave's long 2.8-inch, 240 x 400 px touch screen is another one of this its great assets. During calls, buttons for mute, speakerphone, Bluetooth connections and ending calls appear on the screen.

The outward appearance of the Krave is one of a well-designed phone. But because the Krave's touch screen duo divides the phone's features in two places, it may take some time to learn which features are available on which screens. Another common complaint about this handset is that its transparent cover actually gets in the way of two-thumb typing on its full QWERTY keyboard.

I bought this phone, owned it for two weeks, and returned it for the Samsung Sway. Here's a quick list of things I didn't like about it:

-Texting is a major hassle on this phone. When you turn the phone on its side, the accelerometer activates and gives you a full QWERTY keyboard, but the clear cover blocks your left hand from effectively entering text. Maybe I'm just lousy at touch screens, but it took me quite some time just to type a short text message. This phone is not for heavy texters.

-The Internet isn't too great either. There's this strange pointer circle that follows your finger around, but when you take your finger away from the screen it moves a little bit. I had a hard time targeting links in web pages.

-As unique and futuristic-looking as this phone is, it's pretty hefty compared to today's phones. It was reminiscent of my old NEXTEL phones. So, to those of you that are all about thin, stay away. It's also hard to hold between your ear and shoulder.

-There is no one-touch speed dial on this phone. You can press and hold down "1" to access your voice mail, but you can't assign any numbers to the other keys. There's also no quick way to access your recent calls either. You have to open the cover, tap the screen to call up the menu, and then tap Calls.

-Finally, the only good things I can say about this phone are that the audio was loud and clear and the display is bright and colorful. I would seriously suggest trying this phone at Verizon Wireless for as long as you can before buying it. All in all, the phone just seems like it would have been cool 2 years ago, but not compared to today's models.
