AAP Magazine#57 "Portrait" invites photographers to explore humanity in each of us. From the classic studio portraits to the rise of the selfie, the best portraits give a glimpse into somebody's soul, a connection formed across countries, cultures and ages.

We seek the submission of photographs that celebrate the aesthetic and conceptual considerations involved in the creation of the portrait: celebrate diversity, creativity, honesty and self-expression. Studio portraits, candid street shots, self-portraits, conceptual and fine art all welcome. With 7.57 billion people to choose from around the world, show us the ones that matter to you.

All genres, capture types, color and B&W, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

Applications will be assessed on three criteria: creativity, originality and the visual / emotional impact of the image. The winners will be announced on All About Photo and social media.

Please send us a cohesive body of work or portfolio. Only a unified group of photos will be published in AAP Magazine.

Winners will receive $1,000 in cash awards, their winning image(s) or full portfolio published in AAP Magazine #57, extensive press coverage and global recognition.

All winners will have their work published in the 57th printed issue of AAP Magazine, a free copy of the magazine and their portfolio showcased in the Winners Gallery of www.all-about-photo.com.

All About Photo is proud to present Filippo Poli as the winner of the April 2026 Solo Exhibition with his project Alpine Hiatus: The Snow No Longer Tastes Like Snow. The series will be featured exclusively on All About Photo throughout April 2026.

In Alpine Hiatus, Italian photographer and architect Poli captures the Alps caught between memory and transformation. Returning decades after childhood winters in the Aosta Valley, he finds snowfields replaced by reservoirs, snow cannons, and infrastructure. By juxtaposing his family’s archival black-and-white photographs with contemporary color images, Poli explores the emotional and environmental erosion of a once-familiar landscape.

The project blends architectural precision with poetic restraint, documenting both loss and resilience. Alpine Hiatus is a meditation on climate change, memory, and the shifting bond between humans and landscape. Through this exhibition, All About Photo continues to highlight photographers whose work addresses urgent global themes through a personal lens, offering viewers a quiet yet powerful act of witness.

The marginalization of women in the history of photography is rooted in a long-standing tendency to undervalue their creative voice. For decades, women were more often seen as muses or assistants, rather than as artists shaping their own vision. Early visual culture reinforced this imbalance, portraying women as passive figures, while limiting both their representation and their role behind the camera.

Yet throughout history, women have continuously challenged these boundaries—using photography to document, question, and redefine how the world is seen.

With its 55th edition, AAP Magazine celebrates the strength, resilience, and creative power of women through the work of 25 selected photographers. Among them, 17 women are joined by 8 men, representing 12 countries across 3 continents, whose diverse approaches form a compelling tribute to the theme.

From fine art to street photography, documentary to portraiture, the selected works offer a wide range of perspectives—some intimate and introspective, others outward-looking and socially engaged. Together, they create a rich and nuanced dialogue on how women are represented and empowered through photography today.

This series explores environments shaped by human ambition, where structures operate at a scale that exceeds individual presence.

Whether meticulously maintained, fully operational, or marked by abandonment, these spaces persist. I do not seek to document decay, but rather to observe how these architectural forms continue to impose their systemic logic, even when human activity has withdrawn. In these images, human presence recedes in favor of massive, organized structures. Within this apparent coherence, a subtle form of decoherence emerges — a misalignment between monumental scale and lived experience, between operational systems and the tangible reality of the body. I approach these environments from a distance, observing how structure prevails over function. The act of photographing becomes a way of remaining within this tension — of confronting what both attracts and unsettles me. What remains is not decay as an end, but inertia — a quiet persistence of civilization beyond its visible utility.

Civilization is an ongoing body of work, conceived as an open and evolving series.

Step into a world of creativity and recognition with the 11th edition of the All About Photo Awards – The Mind’s Eye. For over a decade, we have provided photographers from around the world with a global platform to showcase their work, gain international exposure, and compete for over $100,000 in prizes awarded to date.

Prizes: Winners will receive $5,000 in cash awards, extensive press coverage and global recognition. The grand prize is $2,500, the 2nd prize is $1,000, the 3rd prize is $750, the 4th prize is $500, and the 5th prize is $250!

London: Jem Southam: The Red River

Huxley-Parlour are pleased to present The Red River by British photographer Jem Southam, the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. With poetic reflections on the English countryside and its history, The Red River explores rural, post-industrial north-west Cornwall, portraying the intertwining of a manufactured landscape and human industry with nature. First exhibited in 1987 and published in 1989, the series is a seminal project within British photography.

The Red River was innovative within contemporary paradigms of photographic technique. It was the photographer’s first resolved work in colour, a practice uncommon in the 1980s. At times, Southam also subverts conventional compositional techniques with radical angles and close distances to the subject matter. Amid these technical transgressions, Southam punctuates the series with traditional landscape imagery which evokes English Romanticism.

Made in the 1980s and revisited in the 1990s, Southam’s project followed the path of the Red River from its source near Troon, along its heavily industrialised valley, and through to the sea. Tin mining gave the slender stream its distinctive red hue. Declining and almost entirely disappeared when Southam was creating The Red River, the industrial identity of the valley was steadily transforming from a reality into an historical fact. He began to photograph the scattered, decaying relics of this industrial past as they slowly merged with the flora, leaving their scars on the land.

While these remnants portray recent history, Southam saw the landscape as a confluence of its inhabitants and the valley’s primordial formation and ancient mythologies. The Carboniferous granite, Bronze Age adits, and medieval tales of travellers lost on a winter’s night, stumbling upon a solitary illuminated window exist in harmony within these photographs. The artist explores the concept of history itself in this series, which he sees concentrated within this river and its fern laden banks.

Southam drew heavily from the Book of Genesis for this project: a tempest over a dark sea, punctuated with white capped waves references God’s creation of light and darkness out of a formless void. Primeval elements of the landscape, foliage and the rushing of the river’s red water, reference the second day of creation. Bucolic idylls juxtapose representations of the despoliation of the Earth and its subsequent regeneration. Southam’s relationship to the English landscape was profoundly influenced by poetry, in particular works by Beowulf, John Milton, and John Bunyan. Wandering throughout the valley and beside the stream, Southam recalled Milton’s depictions of Paradise, lost and then regained; images like Valley of the Barking Dogs, Brea Adit draw from the apocalyptic imagery of Paradise Lost, while others are akin to the beatitude of Paradise Regained. The photographer saw an allegory in his journey along the Red River that went beyond local history, something universal wrought within all of the valley’s shattered remains and ‘poisonous tang’, as he calls it, its beauties and redemptions.

Born in Bristol in 1950, Southam has had solo exhibitions at The Photographers Gallery, London, Tate St Ives, Cornwall and The Victoria & Albert Museum, London. His work is held in many important collections, including those of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Museum Folkwang, Essen, the Yale Centre for British Art, New Haven, and the The Victoria & Albert Museum

All About Photo is thrilled to unveil our October Solo Exhibition, 'Blueprint' by Benita Mayo

This project is a deeply personal exploration of memory, loss, and inheritance. Sparked by the sudden passing of my father in 2020, it reflects on the weight of history, the scars of collective trauma, and the fragility of memory. Rooted in Virginia’s complex legacy—from slavery and civil rights struggles to the private wounds carried within families—it weaves together words and images to confront silence, honor resilience, and seek healing through remembrance.

BLUEPRINT:

Memory is unreliable, and time has a way of bending the truth. I have always been on ajourney to unearth and examine the stories that live within me—some through my own experience, but most through inheritance.

When Daddy suddenly passed in 2020, the tectonic plates of my life forever shifted. In an instant, I knew life would never be the same. As I find myself longing to understand the past, the impermanence of memory is palpable. I feel as if I’m racing toward an invisible finish line.

My parents were born in Virginia, a state with an indelible imprint on America’s most painful and pivotal chapters: the rise of slavery, the Civil War, and the long struggle for civil rights.Over 350,000 men, women, and children were sold from Richmond’s auction block. Virginia was the capital of the Confederacy, and the Fall of Richmond marked the end of the CivilWar. Later, during a time of “massive resistance,” a neighboring county chose to close its public schools rather than integrate them. This was the Virginia into which my father was born.

History and politics shaped my family’s story. They directly influenced how we were raised.The most pervasive feelings I remember from childhood were fear and loneliness. We lived with trauma, sorrow, silence, and deep wounding. But at the heart of it all, there was love—and a steadfast hope that tomorrow could be better than today.

Toni Morrison, in The Bluest Eye, urges us not to “forgive and forget,” but to “remember and do better.” Too often, shame and embarrassment silence truth. But only through declaration and revelation can truth and insight rise. Only then can the cracks begin to mend, and healing begin.

Much of what I have struggled with throughout my life has roots in collective trauma. In mysearch to understand what happened to me, I’ve spent 1,571 hours in therapy. It has takendecades to identify the cycles, to stop the bleeding, to clean the wound, and to begin thework of healing. For any wound to heal, this must come first. Then, in time, new tissueforms—a foundation for new skin that is stronger, more resilient.
