The posts may come a bit slower this week. I'm going out of town, but not the kind of girlfriend-getaway-to-a-fabulous-destination kind of out of town. I'm headed back to Louisiana to say goodbye to my beloved Uncle James. I came home Friday night to the sad news that he had passed. Today, the mind numbing feeling that goes with this loss is still here, but there is comfort that he is not in pain anymore. My Uncle James was more than just an uncle. He and my aunt Maggie were the Hotel Chez James & Maggie of New Orleans, Louisiana for many years. Family and friends traveled to New Orleans to enjoy Jazz Fest, Bayou Classic, Mardi Gras, Essence and any reason to be in Nawlins' and stay with them.

I can recall many trips to Nawlins' just to sip Sazerac, Beignets and Cafe au Lait from Cafe du Monde, Hurricanes, Bloody Mary's, walks on Bourbon and Canal Streets, dinner at Cochon, Dooky Chase, Casamento's, Commander's Palace, and Jacqui Imo's. Their home has been a haven to me, family, and friends. When they lost everything to Hurricane Katrina they packed up and headed to Leesville to be near family - always with their heads held high. I didn't think I would have to return to Louisiana in less than 30 days, but duty calls.

You may ask how can she find beauty in his death? I find it in the way he loved his wife and son. I mean the kind of love that lasted over 51 years of a good marriage and raising a fine young man (my cousin is a Professor just like his dad - smart, kind, and nice). The beauty of his memory when I needed a good therapy session (he was a Psychologist) or the beauty in knowing that Aunt Maggie never had a daughter, but she loved me like I was hers and gave me her trusted recipes for Oyster Dressing and Stuffed Mirliton's.

I remember years ago when I debated studying abroad in Paris and my family was not keen on me going that far away for weeks. He called me and said "Sugar, get your butt on that plane. Your family will get past it and if they don't it's your life. You are a good girl - go; go to Paris and make me and your family proud. I want you to eat lots of great food and drink tons of great wine. (I happily did both). Enjoy life because it's a gift." I booked my ticket the next day and it was one of the best lectures I've ever received.

I will try to post as often as I can, but if the week feels empty, remember so do I. I will be back next week better than ever. Charge it to my head and not my heart. Thanks for understanding. I love you all. Mwah!

A long time favorite of mine is Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush Lip Glosses. They come in tons of amazing scents and flavors and are sheer enough for everyday wear. They come in a variety of shimmer levels, some have lots and others have little or none. They are a little on the sticky side, but totally worth it just for the variety and the price.

I have at least one of these glosses in my bag at all times and find myself reaching for them on a daily basis. A great gloss if you’re like me and love having an amazing smell next to your nose all day.

Destination Pretty: W Hotel Washington, DC

It has been four years since I moved to DC and one staple during the summer was the rooftop deck at The Hotel Washington. Fast forward four years and that hotel has turned into one of my absolute favorite hotel properties ever - W Washington, DC. The W opens here tomorrow and I'm looking forward to a staycation in the next few weeks. The sky terrace is so fabulous that I will be spending a few nights there enjoying a cocktail and views of the White House.

I have a few friends visiting for the summer and the first stop on the list of places to see and things to do is this hotel. DC is a great tourist spot, but this new hotel will make a fabulous girl getaway as well. W Hotels carry the Bliss line of products, which means the spa - you guessed it is Bliss (pun intended).

The spa and deck make this hotel great, but the addition of the Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant, J&G Steakhouse will give the celebrity chef restaurants in DC a run for their money. I've already made my reservations and eagerly looking forward to dining there. A few steps down from the restaurant is the W Wine Bar which is a great place for a pre-dinner/theater drink.

I definitely believe that this hotel will add to DC's top places to see and be seen.

Julia's Beach Bag Beauty: Week 5

I hope everyone had a happy holiday. Mine was busy and relaxing all at the same time. I think it had to do with I was off on Friday and that just made my week.

This week's beach bag is from Beau Soleil. Made from organic materials it can be used as a beach bag, purse, or grocery bag - it's all up to you.

I will feel the bag with two great products from Avon's Suncare line.

Avon's Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Picardin Towelettes are a perfect way to eliminate the smell of regular bug spray.

If I didn't add Avon's Skin So Soft Guard Plus SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion my mother would not be happy. I have used the Skin So Soft Spray for yeas and it has helped the bugs stay away from me. I used to spray my body with it before running in Houston and I never once got attacked by mosquitoes. This lotion is equally as great, but it has the benefit of sunscreen. My mother likes to tell me she discovered it so I will let her believe so.

Maybelline's Color Sensational Lip Gloss in Broadway Bronze will also be in my beach bag. This super intense natural bronze shimmer color is a perfect compliment to my skin. I haven't tried to see if this gloss lasts through yoga, but I will definitely try this weekend.

Immediately when I saw the Tarte Cosmetics hEYE Impact Waterproof Creaseless Shadow/Liner Duo I knew it was loave at first sight. I’ve always been a fan of eye crayons because of how easy they are to apply and their portability factor. Most crème shadows slide all over the eye area and migrate to the crease, but I didn’t have that problem with this one. The color was fabulous and had great pigmentation and I was actually able to apply the liner to my inner eye, which is almost impossible with other liner pens. I know this product will be heading on vacation with me for years to come.

Destination Pretty: Aloft Hotels by Starwood

I have a very sweet boyfriend. After weeks of trying to make plans for the first weekend in August with him he admits a secret. "I got us tickets to Dave Matthews Band in concert that weekend." So that's why we couldn't go away. The concert is at least an hour drive from us so I decided that it's a perfect excuse to stay at the Aloft Hotel by Dulles Airport which is 10 minute drive from the concert venue. This will be my first "staycation" so I'm excited about that as well.

The Aloft Hotels are part of the Starwood Hotel chain and all though the hotels are budget friendly it packs a lot of punch. The bathrooms are outfitted with Bliss Spa products just like its sister properties, but the hotels have a funkier vibe. I know at the concert I will be rocking out to all of the bands old and new tunes, so I'm looking forward to a short jaunt to continue the happy vibe in the Remix Lounge.

At the end of the night I look forward to crashing into the bed after a happy day with Dave and the Band. If the hotel only sold Dave's Blenheim Vineyard Wines then I would really be heaven.

I always love Alicia Keys and Tatiana Ali's makeup so I practically begged on my pretty hands and knees for the fabulous Ashunta Sheriff to give me the 411 on all that pretty makeup.

These are Ashunta's exact words on how to achieve the look.

Alicia Keys - Inspiration: Moroccan inspired due to her recent trip there in May for the Mawaline Festival. Alicia's short bejeweled shift dress in its soft aqua truly brought out her golden complexion. I wanted to give her a touch of sun kissed glow and Egyptian/Moroccan eyes with coral lips reminiscent of the colors of a Moroccan Paradise.

Skin: Mary Kay Oil Free Hydrating Gel to make skin supple and soft. Oil of Olay Illuminating Eye Cream to diminish imperfections, Naked Cosmetics Shadow Base, Laura Mercier Mineral Primer.

Face: Mary Kay oil free Tinted Moisturizer in Bronze 1, Mary Kay Concealer in Bronze 1, Black Opal translucent finishing powder, Cover Girl Queen Collection Natural Hue Mineral Bronzer in Light Bronze.

Eyes: Egyptian inspired eyes using Jane Iredale 24 Karat gold shimmer in the inner corner of the eyes, Naked Cosmetics eye color is EC15 Green in the outer corner and lower lash line.I used Makeup Forever Gold Cream on the lid to give Alicia a cleopatra eye affect. I used Styli Style 24 hour Black Liquid Liner and completed the look by adding 3 coats of Dior Show Black mascara on top and bottom lashes.

Lips: Mary Kay Coral Lip liner I lined and filled lips in then used TRUE lip gloss an all natural organic brand in Coral to give Alicia a beautiful coral pout.

Cheeks: I made cheeks pop by applying Mary Kay Strawberry Cream mineral blush on the apples.

Body: my secret weapon body glow mix is a combination of Dior Bronze Sun Powder Spray, Smashbox Bodylights body Lotion shimmer and Girlactik Beauty Gold Shimmer powder. The combination gave Alicia an amazing bronzed sun kissed glow to make her legs and decolletage look flawlessly stunning.

Tatyana Ali - Inspiration: Bollywood Princess, bringing out more of Tatyana's Indian heritage I used metallic earth tones to shape and frame her eyes. Radiant bronzed skin works for her toffee complexion and an iridescent nude topped the look off.

Skin: prepped skin with Mary Kay Oil Free Hydrating Gel to moisturize skin, Elizabeth Arden Gold Ceramide Capsules using as a primer plus it makes skin glow, Mary Kay Eye Primer so eye shadow last for hours on end, LaVanilla Lip balm because it hydrates lips and smells so good.

Face: I used Mary Kay Tinted Moisturizer in Bronze 2, Black Opal Concealer and translucent pressed finishing powder to keep skin shine free and polished. Cover Girl Queen Collection Natural Hue Mineral Bronzer in Brown Bronze to sculpt and shape face.

Eyes: Mary Kay Cinnabar Mineral eye shadow on lids, MAC Pigment in gold and vanilla in inner corner of eyes and brow bone to highlight. Makeup Forever Aqua Colors Black Eye Liner and Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara for extra lush and thick lashes. For red carpet glam I added Ja'maal Buster Eye Lash Guru Lashes called 2nd Date Guaranteed which are vampy sexy lash that really opens eyes.

Lips: Mary Kay Lip Iiner in Chocolate with Mary Kay Sugar berry nourishine lip gloss.

Cheeks: Bare Escentuals Flowers Blush applied to apples of her cheeks to make them pop.

Body: Palmers Organic Olive Oil Body Cream and Smashbox Bodylights Lotion body shimmer to make her legs look flawless.

In Rememberance: Michael Jackson (1958-2009)

Words cannot express how sad I am because Michael Jackson is no longer with us. I do understand how those who are gone are still in our hearts. I remember my mom taking me to see him and the Jackson 5 for my first first concert. As a little girl he was the the boy crush of ABC and Give Me One More Chance. Next I was in love with Off the Wall and couldn't help my PYT self as I sang into a mirror with a hair brush singing Rock with You.

Next, it was Thriller. I thought Beat It would drive me to love dancing, but it was Thriller itself that sealed the deal. I still know the main dance sequence and can do it at the drop of a hat. I remember being at the Thriller and Bad concerts and being mesmerized.

Michael, you will never be out of my life.

Koh Gen Do Foundation

I recently tried Koh Gen Do's foundation and powder. Koh Gen is a Japanese skin care company established in 1986 for an actress with sensitive skin who was on a quest to protect her skin from the conditions on the set of TV shows and movies. Koh Gen Do’s philosophy is creating skin care that’s gentle to the skin and they didn't disappoint. Their Moisture foundation feels like a luxurious cream when applied to bare skin or over makeup primer. The foundation is sweat proof in the summer and locks in moisture, excellent to wear when you’re surviving the long East Coast Winter (thankfully a long way off).

The powder was very matte mattified my skin and the soft puff made it extra wonderful to apply. These products contain no synthetic fragrance, pigment or petroleum-based mineral oil. My favorite part of this makeup is the soft skin I am left with not only while wearing it but also after removing it at night. The powder comes in a translucent shade that appears white in the container but works perfectly on my skin. The foundation is only available in three colors, all of which are fairly light, but if you happen to fit into that category you should really check it out.

Beyonce in Concert - She Reigns Supreme

Last night I saw Beyonce in concert for her I AM Tour. If you never had the experience to see Beyonce in concert it's something that should not be missed. I couldn't stop bouncing my head, snapping my fingers, and shaking my body to the music.

She had me Crazy in Love when came out in all that Thierry Mugler glory. All I can say is that Baby Boy she had me going from Hello. It's amazing how many songs she's written - from Independent Woman, Survivor, Check On It, Upgrade You, Deja Vu, and Halo.

Thanks to "The Don" for taking the photos. I was to busy being a Diva, with my Ego going on. While I was Getting Me Bodied and trying to Listen I could feel the joy with all the Single Ladies who after her performance knew we had seen a legend and she is definitely worth it.

Julia's Beach Bag Beauty: Week 3

It's week three in the Beach Bag Beauty. The bags are getting bigger and brighter and the products are always pretty.

This large tangerine shopper from Lacoste has beach bag written all over it. I need all my bags to go over my shoulders because I tend to overload them. Yes, I know it's not good, but this is what I do. The color will also transition to early fall and then resort in the winter. Don't get me wrong, I love the pink begonia color, but if I get another pink bag - well - Houston we are going to have a problem.

Supergoop SFP 30 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen for Face and Body. This sunscreen is one of my all time favorites. It's lightweight and so easy to pack around in the summer. It's also great on the hands if you will be behind the wheel a lot this summer.

LaVanila Healthy Deodorant. I have been hearing a lot about the LaVanila Healthy Deodorant. This is a perfect deodorant to carry around especially if you go from the pool or beach to a restaurant and don't have time to to take a shower.

Estee Lauder Summer Bronze Goddess Collection is rich with deep bronze shimmer goodness. Let’s start with the EauFraiche Skinscent. It has the summer, summer, summertime feeling in every spritz. I have been liberally applying it as a precursor to my weekends. I wish it came in a roller ball as well which would make it perfect for a beach bag. (EL I hope this is a good hint)
