Harley to recall more than 308,000 motorcycles

DETROIT (AP) — Harley-Davidson Inc. is recalling about 308,000 motorcycles to fix a switch problem that can cause failure of the brake lights and possibly even the rear brakes themselves.

The company said in documents filed last week with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that brake light switches can be exposed to too much heat from the exhaust system. The heat can cause the brake lights to fail, and the problem also can cause fluid leaks and the loss of rear brakes, the documents said.

The problem affects Touring, CVO Touring and Trike motorcycles from the 2009 through 2012 model years. They were built between June 6, 2008 and Sept. 16, 2011.

Harley says it will notify owners of the recall. Dealers will install a rear brake light switch kit free of charge.

The recall affects about 251,000 motorcycles in the U.S. alone, with the balance in other countries.

Harley said it noticed the problem in June of 2010 when it got a report of a Trike model motorcycle that lost its rear brakes due to the problem. The company began investigating, and in July of 2010, it sent investigators to a dealership in Louisiana to inspect another bike that was involved in a crash. Harley has not determined yet if the problem caused the Louisiana crash, which injured one person, company spokeswoman Maripat Blankenheim said Monday. She did not know how seriously the person was hurt, but said Harley is not aware of any other crashes or injuries.

Harley said in the documents that there have been no more reports of the problem occurring since July of 2010.

The company also said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it expects the recall to cost $10 million to $12 million, which will be charged as an expense in the fourth quarter.

Shares of Harley-Davidson rose $1.22, or 3.2 percent, to $38.82 in afternoon trading Monday.

''I chose to purchase from the US because with the high Australian dollar it was much cheaper than from the local stores,'' Mr Davenport said. ''It was shipped with a free case and was available instantly, whereas local stores had a four-week waiting period.''

Mr Davenort, of Moore Park, has used the surging Australian dollar, which peaked at US94.94¢ yesterday morning, to pay for a trip to Thailand for orthodontic surgery. The trip, including 12 nights in a four-star resort, has cost $4500, compared with the $18,000 he would have paid for the same surgery in Australia.

Kristy Carstairs, the Oceania manager of the accommodation website Hostelworld, said Mr Davenport was not the only Australian taking advantage of the exchange rate to book overseas travel. Hostel bookings by Australians for Indonesia, China and Singapore this month had risen more than 20 per cent on a year ago, she said.

A spokesman for Choice, Christopher Zinn, said the immediate effect of a high Australian dollar on consumers was more online shopping and overseas holidays. It also created an expectation

that prices in local shops would drop quickly, he said. ''It does excite something in us when you get the feeling that things might be cheaper.''

The chief executive of the electronics retailer JB Hi-Fi, Terry Smart, said there was no doubt that in the next few months prices for electronics would fall.

''The biggest impact is always competitive pressure between suppliers. As soon as one moves they fall like dominoes.''

The falling US dollar may also make that American icon the Harley-Davidson a more common sight around Australia. Tim Gold of All American Imports buys second-hand motorcyles in the US and then finds Australian buyers. The number of inquiries had more than doubled in the past four weeks, he said.

Many Australians would also benefit from petrol prices remaining low, said an NRMA spokesman, Peter Khoury. On average every 1¢ rise in the Australian dollar against the US dollar led to a fall of 0.6¢ at the bowser, he said. The average petrol price in Sydney yesterday was 118¢ a litre, compared with 128¢ five weeks ago, when the dollar was about US90¢.

THE GROUND-ZERO MOSQUE

This is unrelated to the http://allamericanimports.com/ site and blog but I am absolutely disgusted that a Mosque is going to be built at Ground Zero. This is nothing more then a slap in the face. My question is where is this 100 MILLION dollars coming from? You cannot trust anything that is said by a Muslim about this Mosque. Nothing. The goal here is to build a Mosque as close to Ground Zero as possible in order to erect a monument to what they see as a great Muslim victory over the United States. Of course they would never admit this when questioned by government officials or the media. They will lie - and their religion tells them that is perfectly OK to lie in furtherance to the Islamist agenda so long as they are lying to non-believers.
I am not condemning all Muslims, just the ones that believe that erecting such a monument is appropriate.

Well I thought I was just that good but apparently not. Hello, My name is Mark Lehman and I am the president and CEO of All American Imports. Lately My staff and I have been patting ourselves on the back due to some awesome sales numbers but it turns out we are not the only ones exporting from the states and doing well. Let us take a look at some interesting data on US Exports.

Recent market trends have proven successful since the companies inception in 2007. The United States Export market accounts for nearly 12% of our countries GDP. During the first seven months of 2007, US exports jumped 11.6% from the year-earlier period. Among industrialized countries, only Japanese export growth of 12.6% exceeded the US.

As further testament to the US export market growing even stronger, the US has now experienced foreign auto manufacturers now opening plants here in the states and selling their product back overseas, including sales to the manufactures country of origin. Joseph G. Carson, Senior Vice President and Director at Global Economic Research predicts an advance between 10% and 12% through the end of 2008. Mr. Garson has also sited that exports are now accounting for nearly 25 percent of domestic shipments from American manufacturers today.

Now I know you might say well a weak dollar is a contributing factor and you would be right. However, there is a much more interesting trend, something I don’t think this country has seen since the 1950’s.

I have been exporting American goods for over 10 years and let me tell you what a pain in the ass the Chinese have been. They make an inferior product for next to money with little mark-up with tons of distribution (hence another reason I won’t shop at Wal-Mart).

So (Mark get to the point), What’s the trend? People in the States have known for a long time the Chinese products are crap, however overseas I have numerous clients whom I have lost due to Chinese distributors. Now they are coming back. Not only because Chinese products keep breaking after 30 days but also BECAUSE THE MARKET IS NO LONGER TOLERATING THEIR CRAP.

If you happen to read this blog you may ask why I wrote it. The answer is quite simply because American made products are finally gaining back the positive reputation of yesteryear and I am damn proud of it.

I am not Anti-China, I loved the Olympics.
