Balancing Interests of Science, Scientists, and the Publishing Business

Abstracts: In the closely coupled system of diverse interests of science, those of scientists (authors, reviewers, and readers), their organizations (universities, research institutions) and those of publishers, every component is undergoing major changes in the digital era. In reality, these interests are deeply interconnected and long-term dominance of any one of them could hinder progress in many different ways. For science, originality and novelty do not have merit without reproducibility; for scientists, quantity is not a substitute for quality, and if businesses focus only on profit, it will suppress the value of their publications. Science, scientists, and organizations not only coexist, but cannot exist without each other, therefore all participants must adjust their actions to avoid devaluation of the whole. Many efforts are underway to regain this balance, and one possible approach – ours at Precision Nanomedicine – is described here.

Earth Science and Technology Cell for “Marine Biotechnological Studies” (ESTC-MBS) has been established in Centre for Ocean Research (COR), Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, in association with NIOT, Chennai & CMLRE, Cochin with the support of MoES. To take forward the vision and mission of ESTC-MBS, applications are invited from eligible candidates for following posts :
JRF positions – 6, Accounts Assistant -1 and Field Assistant - 1.

Eligibility for JRF: Post graduation in Biotechnology / Life Sciences / Nanotechnology / Marine Biology / Aquaculture / Zoology / Microbiology / Biology and Allied Sciences.

The metal oxide nanomaterials exhibit interesting electrical and photochemical properties because of their size, stability, and high surface area that render them as great choices in fabricating alternative electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage and sensor applications. The hybridization of metal oxides with other materials induces a synergetic effect, leading to the improvement in electrical conductivity, stability, and electron transfer kinetics during the electrocatalytic reactions. These key factors result in greater sensitivity of the sensor materials towards the analyte molecules. In this aspect, the current book will elaborately discuss the electrochemical determination of a variety of toxic chemical contaminants using metal oxide-based nanocomposite materials. Ultrasensitive and selective detection of toxic chemical contaminants is important and demanding, especially for monitoring and controlling the environmental pollution. In recent years, the metal oxide-based nanocomposite materials have shown high potential in the electrochemical detection of heavy metals, inorganic anions, phenolic compounds, pesticides, and chemical warfare reagents. In addition to the instrumental simplicity, the electrochemical methods show the improved sensor performance through the synergetic effect of metal oxide and other electroactive nanomaterial present in the nanocomposite. Thus, detailed information on the electrochemical sensing of toxic chemical contaminants using metal oxide-based nanomaterials must be obtained in order to realize their high potential to the maximum. The recent progress in developing electrochemical sensors using metal oxide-based nanocomposite materials and the perspectives on future opportunities in sensor research and development will also be discussed in this book.

Bucharest, May 14^th, 2019 – The National Institute for Research and Development in Microtechnologies - IMT Bucharest - organizes the 9th edition of EuroNanoForum (EuroNanoForum 2019 - Nanotechnology and progress of advanced materials under Horizon2020 and beyond), which will be held between June 12 - 14, 2019 at the Palace of Parliament, Bucharest. This event is part of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and represents the most important European forum bringing together top researchers from prominent international centers, industry experts, and policymakers. Nanoindentation - Nano Mechanical Characterization and Surface Imaging

Such an indentation testing in which both load and the depth of penetration are in the microscale or lower. Nanoindentation is used extensively nowadays to engineer better materials, mechanical properties play a very critical role.

Nanoscale engineering makes materials lighter, stronger, cheaper, more recyclable.

Traditional hardness tester had large varying tips, with lower spatial resolution and gave us the average hardness value over the larger area. Whereas Nanoindenters use Berkovich Tip, which has a precise geometry and provides real-time data.

You can identify the properties like hardness and modulus with a single indent and the same tip will generate an in-situ 3D topographical image of the surface.

Essential Qualification: M.Sc Degree with NET or equivalent qualification (Chemistry/ Materials Science/Nanotechnology) or P.G Degree in Professional Courses : M.E/M.Tech. (Metallurgy & Materials Science, Ceramic Technology, Polymer Science, and Nanotechnology) with minimum 55% marks. NET /GATE qualified candidates are preferred.

Desirable Qualification: Candidates with strong knowledge on electrochemical techniques and experience in materials synthesis will be preferred.

Emoluments: Rs.25,000/ p.m.+ HRA (as per ISRO norms).

JRF position is purely temporary and co-terminus with the project tenure. The JRF will be encouraged to enroll for Ph.D.

Who can apply?

In order to be eligible candidates must meet the following requirements:
a) Holders of the degree of "Licenciado"/Bachelor (1st Cycle) or legal equivalent, in the field or in related fields of study;

b) Holders of a foreign higher education academic degree conferred following a 1st Cycle of studies in the field, or in related fields, organised according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State that has adhered to this Process;

c) Holders of a foreign higher education academic degree that is recognised as satisfying the goals of a degree in the field, or in related areas, by the Scientific Council of the Faculty;

d) Holders of a scientific and professional curriculum relevant to the frequency of this cycle of study, duly justified, and recognized by the Scientific Council of the Faculty.

The recognition referred to in points b) to d) shall be used for admission purposes only and shall not entitle the holder to recognition of any degree or diploma.

How are applicants selected?

In order to fill the vacancies, all admitted candidates shall be ranked according to the criteria set out in 'Regulamento Geral dos Mestrados', which takes into account the specific training in the scientific field of the course, the final grade of the degree and the academic, scientific and professional curriculum. The evaluation of a possible interview may also be included if the jury so decides.

When due to non-registration or cancellation within the period of enrollment or in a period that allows the replacement, candidates not placed due to lack of vacancy will be invited to occupy the remaining vacancies.

What is the costs?

There is an application fee (€20,00) and another one for enrolment (€20,00), if the applicant is placed (It includes student insurance).See the table of legal charges and fees in force available at http ://uaa.uma.pt/).

Annual Tuition fee:
- EU: €1.500,00/Year for applicants with citizenship from European Union (EU)
- Non-EU: €4.000,00/Year.

The best 10 Non-EU/EEA applicants enrolled at the end of all calls will have an annual reduction of 50% in the tuition fee. Therefore they will pay €2.000,00/Year.

According to the "Regulamento de Propinas" in force, the fee may be paid entirely upon enrolment or in 10 instalments, to be paid at the end of each month, With enrollment is charged the first installment of tuition fees, to be paid within the time specified.

b) Copy of the Identity Card/ Citizen Card/Passport (only for non-Portuguese citizens);
c) Curriculum vitae preferably in the Europass format;

The field of coatings and thin-film technologies is rapidly advancing to keep up with new uses for semiconductor, optical, tribological, thermoelectric, solar, security, and smart sensing applications, among others.
