Pew Poll: 34 of 37 Countries Expect AI to Shrink Jobs

Jeff Bezos has been making a very different bet on artificial intelligence.

The Amazon founder said in June that AI would create a labor shortage rather than leave people without work. His argument was that better AI would lower the cost of turning ideas into products and services, creating more work for people instead of making them redundant.

A new Pew Research Center survey shows that public opinion is running in the other direction.

People in 34 of 37 countries surveyed said they expect AI to produce fewer jobs over the next 20 years than more jobs. Across the 37-country sample, the median share choosing “fewer jobs” was 46%, compared with 9% who expected more jobs. Another 13% said AI would make little difference to job numbers, and 25% were unsure.

That is not a small warning from a handful of tech workers. Pew surveyed 42,151 adults across 36 countries between February 8 and May 13, 2026, then used separate U.S. surveys covering 8,607 adults. The U.S. results were folded into the 37-country comparison.

America is among the most worried nations

Americans gave one of the strongest job-loss responses in the survey. Seventy-one percent said AI would lead to fewer jobs in the United States over the next 20 years. Only 5% expected more jobs, 10% saw little difference and 14% were unsure. South Korea and Australia were higher at 76%.

Pew also found that fear is not limited to older workers who may be watching automation reshape industries. In several countries, adults ages 18 to 34 were more likely than adults 50 and older to expect fewer jobs. That pattern appeared in countries including Canada, France, Singapore, Sweden, India, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Nigeria was the lone country where the share expecting AI to add jobs was higher than the share expecting fewer jobs, at 27% versus 26%. The survey also found unusually high uncertainty in Thailand and the Philippines, where “not sure” was the most common response.

Pakistan, which was included in the study, leaned toward job losses too. Forty-four percent expected fewer jobs, compared with 22% expecting more, 21% expecting little difference and 11% who were unsure.

Bezos sees more work. Workers see fewer openings.

Bezos’s forecast rests on a familiar economic idea: when technology makes one task cheaper, people find new things to build, new businesses appear and demand for human labor can rise.

That may still happen.

The trouble for that argument is what workers can see right now.

AI has already become part of corporate workforce decisions. Reuters reported in June that U.S. employers announced 97,006 job cuts in May, with AI linked to 40% of them, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Reuters also reported that Amazon had trimmed roughly 30,000 corporate roles since late 2025, with AI efficiency gains part of the explanation.

Those figures do not prove that AI is the sole reason people are losing jobs. Companies cut staff for many reasons, and an employer saying AI is part of a restructuring is not the same as proving that a machine directly replaced every worker affected.

There is another part of the story that may explain why the Pew result feels closer to reality for many workers: jobs can disappear from the hiring pipeline before mass layoffs become visible.

A Stanford Digital Economy Lab study using payroll data through June 2026 found that employment among workers ages 22 to 25 in highly AI-exposed occupations was about 19% below the level the researchers estimate would have occurred if those workers had kept pace with peers in less-exposed occupations.

The researchers said the gap appears to be driven mainly by reduced hiring rather than increased separations. Their results also show weaker employment in occupations where AI is more likely to automate tasks, with less evidence of a decline in jobs where AI is used to assist workers.

That finding matters because a young person does not need to be fired by AI to feel its effect. A job that is never posted, a junior position that is removed from a team, or a company that decides one experienced employee with AI tools can cover work once assigned to several entry-level workers can change the market without producing a dramatic layoff headline.

The Pew survey is measuring expectations, not the final outcome

Pew is not saying that 34 countries will actually lose jobs because of AI. It asked people what they think will happen over the next two decades.

That distinction matters. The labor market is already showing signs of both automation and new AI-related hiring. Companies are building teams around AI, changing job requirements and creating new technical roles at the same time that other roles are being reduced.

Still, the direction of public sentiment is hard to miss.

People are watching companies spend heavily on AI and then announce workforce cuts. They are seeing entry-level opportunities tighten in some AI-exposed occupations. They are also hearing tech leaders make sharply different predictions about what comes next.

Bezos says AI can open up so much new economic activity that the problem could eventually be a shortage of workers, and even Sam Altman doesn't believe AI will reduce jobs.

The Pew respondents are looking at the same technology and asking a simpler question: if AI lets companies produce more with fewer people, where does the extra demand for workers come from?

Right now, the public answer is overwhelmingly that there will be fewer jobs.

That does not settle the 20-year debate. It does show why the job-loss argument is no longer just a futuristic fear. For part of the workforce, especially people trying to get their first serious job in AI-exposed fields, the change is already showing up in hiring decisions.

Partner portal activity is one of the clearest proxies for how alive a relationship is. A partner who stops logging in, downloading assets, or registering deals is telling a vendor something well before a quarter closes short. Health signals worth tracking here include:

Is India Becoming the New China for Global Manufacturing?

India has been trying to become much more than just a destination for assembling phones and electronic gadgets, and to become what today's China is.

A new semiconductor partnership involving Dutch chipmaker Nexperia and Tata Electronics shows how far that ambition is reaching.

Nexperia said Thursday it will work with Tata Electronics on chip manufacturing, assembly and testing in India, bringing its own semiconductor products into Tata’s expanding manufacturing network.

The deal covers production of Nexperia’s MOSFET portfolio at Tata Electronics’ planned 300mm semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, along with assembly and testing of Nexperia’s discrete semiconductor products at Tata’s facility in Jagiroad, Assam. The companies will also cooperate on technology development and research. Financial terms were not disclosed.

It's not just another tech news coming from India, it matters because this is not simply another electronics company moving some final assembly to India. Nexperia is putting its products into both the front-end and back-end stages of semiconductor manufacturing.

And that is where India’s manufacturing story gets more interesting.

India Is Becoming the New China for Global Manufacturing

India wants the factories, the jobs and the supply chains

For years, China became the default destination for companies that needed enormous manufacturing capacity, deep supplier networks, trained workers and competitive production costs. Electronics companies could build products there, source components nearby and move finished goods through an industrial network built over decades.

India is now making a serious attempt to offer an alternative.

Tata Electronics says its Dholera fab represents an investment of about $11 billion. Its Jagiroad semiconductor assembly and test facility is planned with an investment of roughly $3 billion. Together, the two projects represent about $14 billion of planned investment in semiconductor manufacturing.

The Nexperia deal gives those facilities another global customer and another layer of semiconductor expertise.

Nexperia said the partnership covers three areas: wafer fabrication, assembly and testing, plus technology and ecosystem development. The company described the arrangement as part of an effort to create a more geographically balanced manufacturing network.

That language tells its own story.

Companies are not only asking where they can manufacture cheaply anymore. They are also asking where production can continue if trade restrictions, political disputes or supply disruptions hit one country.

Nexperia has a particularly obvious reason to think about that question.

Nexperia’s China dispute hangs over the deal

Nexperia is owned by China’s Wingtech, but it is no longer controlled by Wingtech after a dispute that began with intervention by the Dutch government in September 2025.

The dispute was linked to concerns over a potential transfer of Nexperia operations to China. Beijing later temporarily blocked exports of Nexperia chips packaged in China, contributing to shortages that affected carmakers.

Those restrictions have since eased, yet Nexperia remains caught between corporate ownership and national supply-chain interests. A Dutch court stripped Wingtech of control, and the company’s current management board backed the Tata partnership.

For Nexperia, India offers another production base. For Tata, the arrangement brings an established international semiconductor company into facilities that are still being built and scaled.

That combination is useful for both sides.

This is where the “new China” comparison starts to make sense

Calling India the new China today would be too early, but it surely is in the race. China still has an industrial machine that took decades to build, with supplier clusters, logistics networks, skilled manufacturing labor and enormous production capacity that are difficult to reproduce quickly.

Reuters reported this week that some companies that moved production out of China are reconsidering those decisions because alternative markets, including India, can struggle to match China’s factory ecosystem and supplier networks.

Still, the direction is hard to miss.

India is attracting manufacturers that want lower-cost production, a huge pool of workers and a market large enough to support major investment. It is also trying to move into higher-value manufacturing instead of remaining a place where imported components are simply put together.

Semiconductors may be one of the clearest examples.

At SEMICON India in New Delhi on Thursday, Applied Materials announced plans to invest $5 billion in India over the next decade. More than 600 companies and representatives from 52 countries attended the semiconductor event, according to Reuters. India has also committed more than $21 billion across two major semiconductor incentive programs.

India has already attracted semiconductor packaging projects, though one major hurdle remains: it has yet to produce chips from a large-scale fabrication plant. Reuters reported that commercial production from Tata Electronics’ Gujarat fab has been delayed by nearly two years.

So the country is not at the finish line. It is building the road.

Nexperia is another piece of that puzzle

Nexperia's products are not the kind of headline-grabbing processors normally associated with artificial intelligence. Its semiconductors include components used widely across automobiles, consumer electronics and industrial equipment.

That makes the Tata partnership important for a different reason.

A manufacturing economy is not built only around the most advanced processors. It needs the less glamorous components too: power devices, discrete semiconductors, packaging, testing, materials, equipment suppliers and workers who know how to operate the entire chain.

Tata is building several of those pieces at the same time.

Its Dholera fab is being developed around 28nm to 110nm processes, covering applications such as automobiles, consumer electronics, computing, data storage, wireless communications and AI. Tata is also developing its Jagiroad packaging operation with an investment above $3 billion.

Nexperia now becomes part of that buildout.

For global manufacturers, that could be the real attraction. India does not need to replace every Chinese factory to become important. It only needs to become good enough, large enough and reliable enough for companies to place a growing share of production there.

That is how manufacturing centers gain weight.

One company builds a plant. Another arrives to supply it. Equipment makers follow. Materials suppliers come next. Workers gain experience. Local suppliers emerge. International companies begin treating the country as part of their standard production plans rather than a backup option.

India is still trying to reach that stage.

Yet deals like Nexperia and Tata suggest the country is getting closer to something much bigger than cheap assembly.

It is starting to make the case that the next great manufacturing destination does not have to be China.

But it's not the first time for everyone here, as Samsung got there first. The original Galaxy Fold was unveiled in February 2019, opening a new category around phones that could turn from a conventional handset into a larger tablet-style display.

Apple’s answer arrives years later and looks less interested in inventing the category than in cleaning up the parts people have complained about.

The iPhone Duo opens to a 7.6-inch inner display and closes around a 5.4-inch outer screen (just like a passport).

Apple says the inner panel has a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and make the fold crease harder to see. Both displays use the same aspect ratio, so content can scale between them without a jarring change in shape.

There is one correction worth making to the early description of the phone: the iPhone Duo absolutely has a hinge.

Apple calls it a precision hinge and says it contains more than 100 components. It supports the center of the display when the phone is open and works with an integrated magnet system to keep the device closed. Apple’s design goal is not a hinge-free foldable. Today, a researcher has resigned from Anthropic after spending years working on AI training at Anthropic and OpenAI, accusing both companies of racing toward self-improving artificial intelligence despite fears inside the industry that such systems could eventually become impossible for humans to control.

Jacob Coxon announced his resignation on X Tuesday, saying neither company was acting responsibly as it pursued increasingly capable AI.

He argued that the race toward self-improving superintelligence had turned into a gamble with consequences that extend far beyond the companies building the systems.

“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade,” Coxon wrote.

That warning would be alarming on its own. What makes it harder to dismiss is that Coxon's claim was quickly echoed by people still working at Anthropic.

Evan Hubinger, Anthropic's Alignment Science Lead, responded that Coxon was correct about the existence of those fears.

Hubinger said he personally puts the chance of AI killing all humans at more than 10% within the next decade and acknowledged that Anthropic does not yet have a plan for solving alignment for superintelligent systems.

Another Anthropic researcher, Samuel Marks, also wrote that AI developers believe their systems could cause human extinction or similarly catastrophic outcomes, with the possibility arriving within the next few years.

The sequence of statements raises a question the AI industry has so far struggled to answer: if researchers at frontier AI companies genuinely believe future systems could become an existential threat, why does the race to make those systems more capable continue?

Coxon offered his own explanation.

He said OpenAI has not fully internalized the scale of the risk, whereas Anthropic understands the danger but remains trapped in competition with other labs.

His argument is that each company fears another company will build advanced systems first, creating an incentive to keep accelerating even when the safety questions remain unresolved.

That is the part policymakers should be paying closer attention to.

The problem is not simply whether one prediction about human extinction proves correct.

Governments are being asked to tolerate a development race in which some of the people closest to the technology openly acknowledge that they do not know how to guarantee control over its most advanced forms.

The case for emergency regulation does not depend on accepting every prediction made by AI safety researchers.

Predictions about superintelligence remain deeply contested, and some experts reject extinction scenarios as too speculative.

The policy problem is the uncertainty itself: companies are developing systems that could gain much greater autonomy and capability before governments have established enforceable rules for stopping them.

Coxon's resignation puts that contradiction in public view. The people building these systems are not speaking with one voice, but some of their own researchers are warning that the race could lead somewhere humanity cannot safely reverse.

That is enough reason to slow the race before the technology reaches the point where slowing it may no longer be possible.

Amazon is cutting another 121 jobs in Washington state, extending a layoff campaign that has already removed thousands of positions from the company this year.

A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filing submitted to Washington’s Employment Security Department shows the latest cuts are spread across Amazon’s corporate offices in Seattle and Bellevue and its BFI1 fulfillment center in Sumner. The reductions are scheduled to take effect throughout October, with separations beginning Oct. 1 and continuing through Oct. 27.

The largest group is at Amazon’s SEA106 building in Bellevue, where 49 employees were notified. The affected positions include software development engineers, applied scientists, senior software managers and a vice president of legal.

Seattle is also losing employees from several downtown offices. The positions include product managers, technical writers and a human resources director. At the Sumner fulfillment center, 32 jobs are being eliminated, including warehouse associates, service technicians and safety specialists. One remote position is also listed in the filing.

Amazon has not attributed this specific round of cuts to artificial intelligence.

Brad Glasser, an Amazon spokesperson, told GeekWire that company teams regularly review their structures and sometimes determine that certain roles are no longer needed.

Amazon said affected employees were given 90 days of advance notice and can seek other internal positions before their jobs end.

That detail matters because Amazon’s layoffs have increasingly been described through the lens of AI. The company has been investing heavily in artificial intelligence and has eliminated roles across parts of its business that are closely tied to automation and new AI systems.
