Duminy powers South Africa into quarter-finals

KOLKATA: South Africa rode on JP Duminy’s robust 99 to storm into the World Cup quarter-finals with a crushing 131-run victory over Ireland on Tuesday.
The Proteas were wobbling at 117-5 after a tight bowling and fielding show by Ireland, but Duminy played a responsible knock to help his team post a challenging 272-7 in the day-night match at Eden Gardens.
The target proved too big for Ireland who were bowled out for 141 in 33.2 overs, with Gary Wilson top-scoring with 31.
South Africa currently top Group B with eight points from five matches, followed by India (7/5), the West Indies (6/4), Bangladesh (6/5) and England (5/5).
Ireland, with two points in five games, are eliminated.
“We wanted to qualify. We’ve got one round robin game left against Bangladesh and hopefully three good games in the knockout phase. We’ve done the first part of it now,” said South Africa captain Graeme Smith.
Ireland captain William Porterfield said: “We started off pretty well. We got couple of wickets up front. We thought it was important to get wickets to peg them back and I thought we did that pretty much throughout.”

Chasing 270 was not out of our reach but we consistently lost wickets.”

Asif, Amir and Butt given bail

LONDON: Three Pakistan cricketers, accused of taking bribes to fix parts of a test match in England last year, told police the incidents were coincidental or bad luck, a London court heard on Thursday.
The trio, former captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, are accused by British prosecutors of spot-fixing or rigging the match by bowling no-balls at pre-agreed times during the fourth test at Lord’s last August.
“There is no doubt that the allegations are very serious. I know you understand that,” Judge Howard Riddle told the men at a hearing at London’s Westminster Magistrates’ court.

Along with a fourth man, sporting agent Mazhar Majeed, the three players, who appeared in court wearing dark suits and dark open-necked shirts, face charges of conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments, and conspiracy to cheat.
Prosecutor Sally Walsh told the court Butt and Amir had said in police interviews that money which had been found was from appearances at an ice-cream parlour owned by Majeed.
Butt told detectives the no-balls were coincidental and Amir said they were the result of bad luck because the ground had been slippery, Walsh said.
The men were ordered to appear again at London’s Southwark Crown Court on May 20 and were given unconditional bail, while Majeed was ordered to surrender his passport.
Riddle said, while Britain had no extradition treaty with Pakistan, any failure to show up for future court hearings would end their careers.
“Failing to attend these proceedings will destroy playing international cricket in the future,” he said, describing the men as being of good character.
“Their reputation is of the utmost importance. They have a very strong incentive to attend trial and to defend this.”
LENGTHY BANS
In addition to the criminal case, the men have been given lengthy bans after having been found guilty of corruption by the International Cricket Council.
They have all lodged appeals against the bans with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Amir’s lawyer Gareth Peirce said her client had had to deal with problems with British immigration in order to attend Thursday’s hearing.

COLOMBO: Pakistan’s maverick paceman Shoaib Akhtar, whose colourful career has been a heady mix of on-field brilliance and off-field controversy, will quit international cricket after the World Cup.

Akhtar made up his mind after Pakistan’s 110-run defeat against New Zealand, in which he went for 70 runs in his nine overs.

“I have decided to retire. Mentally I wanted to go on forever but I have decided to make way for the youngsters,” the 35-year-old said on Thursday.

“I have no regrets. I made lots of friends but some people have misunderstood me. I thank all the players who played with me and against me.

“It was an honour to have played with Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. I never imagined I would play for Pakistan. It was my greatest moment.

“Pakistan’s last match in this World Cup will also be my last. I hope that will be the final on April 2.”

After his mauling against New Zealand, Akhtar was rested for the match against Zimbabwe on Monday and was thought to be an unlikely starter for Saturday’s last Group A match against Australia.

Akhtar, who made his international debut in 1997, took 178 wickets in 46 Tests, the last of which was against India at Bangalore in 2007.

He is three wickets short of 250 in 163 one-day internationals and has taken 19 wickets in 15 Twenty20 internationals.

Pakistan squad members hugged him in the dressing room on Thursday before captain Shahid Afridi embraced him as the players entered the R. Premadasa stadium in Colombo for practice.

“I want to be remembered as an honest and patriotic player who never trod a wrong path,” said Akhtar.

Akhtar, known as the Rawalpindi Express during his tearaway days as one of Test cricket’s most feared if unpredictable talents, once cracked the 100mph barrier at the 2003 World Cup.

At this World Cup, which was always likely to be his swansong, he looked neat and tidy with figures of 0-10 and 2-42 against Kenya and Sri Lanka respectively.

He missed the win over Canada before being smashed all over the park at Pallekele against New Zealand — including 28 runs off his last over — and was dropped for the game with Zimbabwe.

His career will always be remembered for a series of fitness problems, discipline violations as well as a doping offence that put the brakes on achieving his true potential.

Most recently he was fined $2,000 for breaching discipline after the defeat to New Zealand.

Team manager Intikhab Alam confirmed the fine, which was levied after an on-field spat with wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal, who missed two chances off his bowling.

Akhtar and the now banned Mohammad Asif failed drugs tests in 2006 and were suspended for two years and one year respectively, both of which were lifted on appeal.

Fitness problems forced him to miss the 2007 World Cup while he was fined heavily and banned for 13 ODIs after he hit Asif with a bat two days before the 2007 World Twenty20 in South Africa.

In 2008 he was banned for five years after publicly criticising the Pakistan Cricket Board following his exclusion from the list of centrally contracted players.

The ban was reduced to 18 months by a tribunal, which levied a fine of 7.0 million Pakistani rupees ($105,000 at the time). His appeal against the ban is still pending.

Akhtar’s last delivery against New Zealand – which may prove his final one at international level if he doesn’t get another chance at the World Cup — was hit for six by Ross Taylor.

Watchdog sinks teeth into Boris Johnson for 'selective' use of crime figures

Boris Johnson was rebuked by a watchdog today for a crime-fighting boast that was "poor practice" and undermined public trust in official figures.

The London Mayor was criticised by UK Statistics Authority chairman Sir Michael Scholar over a press release about a drop in crime on public transport in the capital.

It was based on quarterly figures produced by Transport for London but was put out "some time ahead" of its official publication, the UKSA said.

Mr Johnson did not break the law as TfL data was not at present classified as official statistics, Sir Michael noted, saying he would ask the Cabinet Office to change that.

"Whatever their answer, I believe that selective prior release, as in your press release of February 21, was poor practice, and was damaging to public trust in the statistics produced by Transport for London," he told Mr Johnson in a letter.

"In the interests of restoring public trust in Government statistics, may I invite you to undertake in future to comply with the Code, as a matter of principle?".

The Code of Practice says statistical reports should be published "separately from any other statement or comment about the figures", that "no statement or comment - based on prior knowledge - is issued to the press or published ahead of the publication of the statistics" and that "no indication of the substance of a statistical report is made public or given to the media" prior to publication, Sir Michael pointed out.

"Statistics of such importance as those you cited should, surely, be treated with the same care and propriety as is now required by law for the most significant official statistics."

His statement came in response to a complaint about the press release by Full Fact, a group which campaigns for "accuracy in public debate".

Labour's deputy leader on the London Assembly, John Biggs, said: "Boris Johnson was caught out misleading people about the number of police on our streets. Now he's been criticised for his use of his crime stats. This Mayor promised transparency and openness but more and more we're seeing spin and fiddling of figures."

Royal Wedding event on Clapham Common not approved yet, it emerges

A camping event set to happen in Clapham Common during the Royal Wedding Weekend has not been granted final approval by the council, it has emerged.
Organisers Camp Royale are already selling tickets for the weekend of April 29, when Prince William and Kate Middleton are set to tie the knot, but Lambeth Council has admitted the event has not yet been approved.
The council vowed to consult with residents and councillors before a final decision is made, despite the Royal Wedding being only six weeks away.
Councillor Florence Nosegbe, cabinet member for culture, sport and the 2012 games said: "The Camp Royale event has not yet been approved, but has been granted an ‘in principle’ agreement for a family event with a campsite of 1806 tents and capacity of 4000 people.
"This means that the council is satisfied that the event can be run safely within the council’s strict guidelines.
"The next stage is to discuss the proposal with local residents and elected councillors before a final decision about whether the event can take place.
"If agreed, the campsite would be managed totally separately from any event activity on the common. The entertainment will be accessible to all Lambeth families free of charge to enjoy this special day.
"All the events we run on Clapham Common have restrictions on noise levels, health and safety and adhere to all the normal by-laws in force at the park."
Yesterday, MP for Streatham, Chuka Umunna, questioned whether the plans should go ahead.
Camp Royale plans to turn Clapham Common into a campsite for those celebrating the Royal Wedding and to broadcast the event on giant screens, with capacity for 10,000 people.
Although one-day festivals take place annually on Clapham Common such as Ben and Jerrys’ Summer Sundae and Get Loaded on the Common, a three-day event with camping is unprecedented on the public open space.
Half of Clapham Common, including the site where the event is due to take place, is within Mr Umunna’s Streatham constituency. Mr Umunna has been contacted by constituents who are concerned about the impact of the proposed event.
He has registered his concerns with Lambeth council and vowed to keep his constituents informed on the issue.

He said: “I was delighted when I heard the happy news about Prince William’s engagement to Kate Middleton and will be celebrating their wedding day as will many of my constituents, but I have deep reservations about this event and have already been contacted by concerned local residents about it.
“It is quite unprecedented for something on this scale to take place over three days on our Common, with people camping on it for the duration – we do not want to see Clapham Common turned into a Glastonbury style venue - albeit slightly posher - with all that would involve and the inevitable disruption to the daily lives of my constituents.”

A cyclist revealed today how her fellow bikers scoured the internet to track down her collection of rare bikes worth thousands of pounds that was stolen from a London lock-up.

Charlotte Barnes returned home from winning a silver medal in a penny farthing race in Tasmania to find the locks smashed, door kicked and eight bikes co-owned with her partner were gone.

The Ealing garage was bolted shut with two sets of padlocks for extra security.

The thieves are understood to have tried to sell the bikes on eBay.

After calling the police - whose speedy detective work Ms Barnes today praised - she posted details of the thefts online.

It took just eight days from reporting the allegations to being reunited with the bicycles.

Ms Barnes, an engineer, said: "Eight quite unique and irreplaceable bikes were taken, along with my archery equipment.

"I posted about the burglary on my blog and the link went out to thousands of cyclists via Facebook, Twitter and cycling online forums.

"My blog went wild with comments and thanks to my friends and readers on the internet, within a couple of days, five of the eight bikes had been found on eBay."

Ms Barnes and her partner Julian Norman, 29, a magistrate, own more than 20 bicycles, which they photographed meticulously to ensure there were good records of them.

They include a tandem, speed track bikes, special load-bearing bikes and Brompton folding bicycles.
Neither Ms Barnes or Ms Norman own a car.

Ms Barnes said: "These are bicycles we have built up by hand and are worth thousands of pounds. They are not the sort of bikes you can buy in Halfords."

The police recovered the couple's bicycles, which were among a haul of 14 found, from a house in Sutton on Wednesday.

The person suspected of trying to sell them on eBay is believed to have spent more than £150 on repairs in a local bike shop on one model. It was returned to them in better condition than before it disappeared.

Coca-Cola shuns father of murder suspect campaign

Coca-Cola has severed all ties with the father of the only suspect in the rape and murder of student Martine Vik Magnussen in London three years ago.

The move comes after 3,000 signed up to a Facebook campaign calling for a boycott of Coca-Cola products because of billionaire Shaher Abdulhak's links with the company.

Campaigners say other firms have cut ties with the Yemeni businessman after reports that he is helping shield his son, Farouk Abdulhak, 23, from justice in Yemen which has no extradition treaty with Britain.

Norwegian Miss Vik Magnussen, also 23, was killed after a night out in Mayfair with friends from Regents' Business School on March 14 2008. She was last seen leaving the Maddox nightclub with Farouk Abdulhak.

Her semi-naked body was found half buried in builders' rubble in a basement beneath his Great Portland Street flat. Abdulhak fled to Yemen where his father has links to the country's president. Shaher Abdulhak's empire includes petroleum, soft drinks, tourism and property and he held the lucrative Coca-Cola bottling rights for several Middle East countries.

The case is a major issue in Norway. Sturla Ellingvag, who organised the Facebook campaign, said: "Our main point in talks with the drinks company was that the father is able to hide his son because of his wealth and his connections including Coca-Cola. This is about exposing the man and putting pressure on him to do the right thing."

A Coca-Cola spokeswoman confirmed that Shaher Abdulhak had agreed to divest his interests in the firm's bottling operations in Egypt, Libya and Yemen, adding: "We have complete sympathy for the Vik Magnussen family." Detective Chief Inspector Lee Presland said: "We have one suspect who we want to talk to and we are not going to give up."

Tuesday the stock market lost nearly 11 percent of its value Monday, the loss was more than 6 percent, make up the biggest loss in 24 years.

It seems that especially investment funds buy shares whose price is very low after the panic selling in recent days, analysts suggested.

Radiation Leaking From Japanese Nuclear Plant, Children Most at Risk

Dangerous levels of radiation now leaking from Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant today have forced 140,000 people to seal themselves indoors. In a nationally televised statement, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said radiation had spread from four of the six reactors at the nuclear facility along Japan's northeastern coast.
Japanese officials told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)"radioactivity is being released directly into the atmosphere." About 150 people from populations around the Fukushima site have received monitoring for radiation levels, reports the IAEA. The group adds the results of measurements on some of these people have been reported, and measures to decontaminate 23 people have been taken. The IAEA says it will continue to monitor these developments as evacuation of the surrounding population is continuing. Japanese authorities have also distributed iodine tablets to the evacuation centers but no decision has yet been taken on their administration.
A person's radiation exposure due to all natural sources amounts on average to about 2.4 millisievert (mSv) per year, notes the IAEA. A sievert (Sv) is a unit of effective dose of radiation. Depending on geographical location, this figure can vary by several hundred percent. To put this in some perspective, one chest X-ray will give about 0.2 mSv of radiation dose.
One U.S. radiation experts says however, that children and women who are pregnant are at greater immediate risk from any radiation released by nuclear reactors in Japan.
"All humans exposed to radiation suffer harm," Dr. Janette Sherman, adjunct professor at the environmental institute at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and the Radiation and Public Health Project told United Press International. "The fetus, infant and child are much more susceptible than adults for two reasons. First, the immune system in the young is underdeveloped, and less able to repair damage from radiation exposure. Second, young cells are dividing very rapidly, and a cell damaged by radiation in a fetus or infant is much more likely to result in a birth defect or cancer than in an adult."

However, adults should also be monitored because people absorb radiation from reactor emissions via inhalation, food and water, added Sherman."What harm we can expect to occur from the Japanese nuclear plant emissions has been well-documented in the people, animals, birds, and plants that were exposed to fallout to Chernobyl," Sherman said.

Boy, 17, dies after drinking two pints of neat vodka on night out in Croydon

Ateenager has died after downing two pints of neat vodka while playing a drinking game, his friends said today.
Louis Buxton, 17, died on Saturday morning after being taken to hospital following a drinking session with friends in Croydon, south London, the previous night.
The promising footballer was taken to Croydon University Hospital after his friends noticed he was "in trouble" after drinking the vodka.
Emotional tributes were today paid to Louis, a popular pupil at Langley Park School for Boys in Beckenham, south east London.
One close friend wrote on a website: "Everyone will learn from this. It's making everyone think twice before drinking. I can tell some of his friends blame themselves as they were all together that night."
The friend added: "All of us are broken because you left. No words will ever express what you were. I'm happy that I got to be a part of your life."
Carl Norman, coach of the team Louis played for, Beckenham Town Football Club, today said he had spoken to some of the other players on the team who told him that the teenager had died after downing two pints of vodka.
He said: "I got a message from one of the other lads over the weekend saying he had downed two pints of neat vodka and was rushed to hospital.
"Louis was a really nice guy with a great sense of humour. He was the team joker but always had time for encouraging the younger lads. He was a great lad and will be really missed."
Friends of the teen held a memorial for him on Sunday night, laying white roses outside the school.
Headteacher Rob Northcott added: "Louis was a nice boy. There are a lot of us who are missing him. I have been with his family over the past couple of days and we are desperate to find out what happened."
A police spokesman said: "At this stage, we are treating the death as unexplained and await the results from the post-mortem examination."

Forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi today stepped up their offensive against the rebels as they advanced towards the opposition headquarters of Benghazi in Libya's east, with the strongman asking people to take up arms against a possible invasion by the western powers debating a no-fly zone over the country.
Rebels in Ajdabiyah -- the last town before Benghazi – faced heavy bombardment from pro-Gaddafi forces, but they denied claims that the area had been recaptured by government troops.
Pro-Gaddafi forces were also reported to be shelling Misrata, the only western city held by the rebels.
Addressing a select gathering of his supporters last night, Gaddafi called the rebels "rats" and denounced Western nations. "They want Libyan oil," he was quoted as saying by Al-Jazeera.

Website map monitors radiation levels across United States

A National Radiation Map that depicts environmental radiation levels across the United States is available on the home page of the Radiation Network. It is updated in real time every minute. Not a government site, this website claims to be the first where "the average citizen (or anyone in the world) can see what radiation levels are anywhere in the USA at any time."
Mineralab, LLC, who operates the web site from Prescott, Arizona, cautions that it is unable to independently verify that the radiation levels or any radiation alerts that are displayed on the Radiation Map are correct and valid. Monitoring stations are operated by grassroots volunteers. Geiger counter malfunctions or proximity of the counters to certain medical procedures or to radioactive items can cause high readings to occur.
It appears from the map that there are nine monitoring stations currently functioning. The map indicates that they are located in Washington, California, Arizona, Colorado, and Indiana with two additional stations on the East Coast.
The public is invited to join the effort. This requires a digital Geiger counter, Software available from Radiation Network, a computer with Windows operating system, and direct internet access.

Active participants receive the benefit of a map that is fully interactive: with zoom capabilities; descriptions of nuclear sites and monitoring stations; additional map layers, including counties, airports, roads, railroads, lakes and rivers; and the capability to download city streets for their home county. The software also entitles the user to participate in the network's own chat forum.

The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament's First Four also provided the first leg break of the postseason. It happened in Clemson's 70-52 victory over UAB in the play-in game. The incident occurred with 5:50 to go in the second half.
Clemson's Jerai Grant scored on a fast-break layup. UAB's point guard Aaron Johnson jumped in an attempt to deter Grant from making the basket. Johnson landed awkwardly on his right leg. His knee buckled and his right tibia snapped in too.

It's sad to see the country's leading assist man (7.7 per game) finish his college basketball career like that. This wouldn't have happened if the NCAA hadn't picked UAB to participate in the play-in game; UAB should have been in the NIT.

Reports have been coming in on the social media Twitter claiming that a pilot has defected from Gadaffi's army in a spectacular suicide attempt to take down his stronghold, Baab Al Aziziyah in the heart of Tripoli. The pilot was on a mission with a second plane to bomb cities when the pilot turned his plane around, flew to Tripoli, and attacked the fortress hiding place of Moammar Gadaffi.

He is said to have emptied his weaponry's rounds into the Dictator's barracks as he crashed the plane into it.

New Tweets are also stating that Khamis Gadaffi's son is in the hospital in serious conditions with burns.

Nuclear scare: Tokyo still safe—Governor assures

There have been conflicting reports whether or not it is still safe to stay in Japan following a series of explosions at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant after Friday's 9.0-magnitude quake.
Reading from several sources made me even more confused about the people's safety for fear of nuclear meltdown.
However, I was advised by my friends who are in Japan to get my source directly from Japan. They remain calm there and are wondering why the exaggerated reaction overseas.
The Japan Times said on Wednesday that while the radiation levels were detected to have increased to approximately 20 times than normal, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government assured the public that there is no immediate health risk and should remain calm.
Gov. Shintaro Ishihara told reporters, "I received a report this morning that there was an important change of data. I heard that it will not immediately cause health problems."
Ishihara further said that the government will continuously update the public.
The report said that the highest exposure level that was detected on Tuesday in Tokyo at about 10:00 was 0.809 microsievert. The mean level between 10:00 and 11:00 was 0.496 per hour.
Sievert (Sv) is the unit of measurement used to analyze the biological effects of radiation. An exposure level in excess of 100,000 microsieverts per hour would pose health threats.
On Monday, the exposure level detected was between 0.035 and 0.038.
Having a chest x-ray exposes a person with about 50 microsieverts.
If a person were exposed to 0.809 microsieverts for a year, he will have been exposed with 4,344 microsieverts, which is within the 2,000 to 5,000 microsieverts per year that we naturally receive. Hey, the sun is one good example of radiation source, the reason why we put sun blocks.

It seems that the source of fear is when the mainstream media put the words "...times higher than usual." This may create unnecessary concern and worse—panic. The public need to be thoroughly informed of this issue.

Japanese Government Warns Those Nearby Nuclear Plant To Stay Indoors In Order To Avoid Radiation

Reuters reported that two workers are missing inside the plant, and a Japanese official said that there was a crack in the roof of the No. 4 reactor.

In a nationally televised statement, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said radiation has spread from the four stricken reactors of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant along Japan's northeastern coast. The region was shattered by Friday's 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the ensuing tsunami that is believed to have killed more than 10,000 people, plunged millions into misery and pummeled the world's third-largest economy.

Japanese officials told the International Atomic Energy Agency that the reactor fire was in a storage pond and that "radioactivity is being released directly into the atmosphere." Long after the fire was extinguished, a Japanese official said the pool, where used nuclear fuel is kept cool, might be boiling.

"We cannot deny the possibility of water boiling" in the pool, said Hidehiko Nishiyama, an official with the economy ministry, which oversees nuclear safety.

That reactor, Unit 4, had been shut down before the quake for maintenance.

Bahrain's King Declares Martial Law

MANAMA, March 15 (Reuters) - Bahrain's king declared martial law on Tuesday as his government struggled to quell an uprising by the island's Shi'ite Muslim majority that has drawn in troops from fellow Sunni-ruled neighbour Saudi Arabia.
An uneasy calm fell on Bahrain overnight, and a defence ministry statement suggested action against protesters camped out for weeks at Pearl roundabout could be swift. Forces may impose curfews, disperse gatherings and evacuate areas, it said.
The three-month state of emergency hands power to Bahrain's security forces, which are dominated by the Sunni Muslim elite.

Clashes left three dead. A hospital source said two men, one Bahraini and the other Bangladeshi, were killed in clashes in the Shi'ite area of Sitra and more than 200 people were wounded in various incidents.
