Canon PowerShot G11 review

The Canon PowerShot G series has been satisfying demanding photo enthusiasts for a number of years and the Canon PowerShot G11 is the most recent edition of the flagship line. Rather uncharacteristically but admirably, some of the biggest news regarding the new device revolves around returning to features of previous models that, with the test of time, have proven to have been good design ideas that were unfortunately abandoned.

Features:

The Canon PowerShot G6 featured an articulated viewing screen which was handy for taking photographs at angles other than straight on. The folks at Canon have realized what a good idea it was and have brought it back. It swings out 170-degrees horizontally and can be rotated through 270-degrees vertically to accommodate a wide variety of shooting angles. It measures 2.8-inches diagonally which is actually just a bit smaller than the 3.0-inch display of the predecessor G10 but it contains the same 460k resolution so images seem even crisper and more detailed. In addition to the viewing screen, the PowerShot G11 is the only such shooter available that actually has an optical viewfinder recognizing that this is often a more precise tool for framing pictures than an LCD screen.

The other big news associated with the G11 seems, superficially, to be a step backwards but it results in an improvement in performance. Whereas the G10 featured a whopping 14.7-megapixel sensor, the G11 has dropped back to 10-megapixels. The change is, in fact, recognition that all the hoopla about ever increasing megapixel quantities has been driven more by PR departments than it has by technical necessity. The reduction is part of Canon’s efforts to provide better low-light performance and less noise than the G10 and it seems to work. Despite the MP rating being the same as the much older G7, other improvements including a much more advanced chip, allow the G11 to produce higher sensitivities and overall better results thanks in large measure to the DIGIC 4 Image Processor.

The PowerShot G11 allows for RAW shooting and image recording without JPEG compression of any sort giving a degree of creative control that is often not available. There’s also a broad spectrum of shooting modes including Auto, Program, portrait, landscape and quick shot. Aperture or shutter priority can be selected or both can be left manual for the ultimate in control. Special scene modes include Night Snapshot, Sunset, Kids & Pets, Indoor, Sports, Fireworks, Beach, Aquarium, Snow and others. Both RAW images and JPEG images can be recorded simultaneously for maximum editing flexibility.

The Canon G11 has a wide angle lens that is equivalent to a 28mm optical lens and, with 5x optical zoom, can produce telephoto images up to the equivalent of 140mm. Optical image stabilization is available throughout the focal spectrum for blur free images.

There is an HDMI output on the camera which allows for viewing still images on an HDTV. That is not, however, to imply that the PowerShot G11 will shoot HD video. Indeed that’s among the chief criticisms of this otherwise up-to-date camera. It will shoot video but only in VGA format so don’t be tricked into thinking that it shoots HD or even wide angle. That’s a pretty major omission at this stage of the game.

The Canon PowerShot G11 features ISO sensitivity from 80 to 3200 as well as a host of portrait aids such as blink detection, motion detection, face detection and face detection self-timer to allow the photographer to get in the shot, and red eye correction.

Canon has long been a leader in photography with their image capturing devices, and their professional DSLR cameras live up to their legacy. Our favorite of their high-end selection is the EOS-1D Mark IV since it's brimming with features and functions that are fun to use and easy to master . The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV is the winner because it offers 10 frames per second continuous shooting, full 1080p HD movie recording and an ISO range reaching up to 102400.

Pros

A large image sensor, wide ISO range, fast shutter and more make this DSLR shine.

It lacks a built-in red eye removal function, which isn’t a deal-killer; it's expensive.

Design

The overall design of this Canon professional DSLR camera is fantastic, with a light weight, excellent features and more. The body of the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV was built with a magnesium alloy. The body feels durable, strong and able to withstand just about any condition. It doesn’t feel like a flimsy plastic camera. The device is built with an integrated cleaning system which works to remove any dust on the inside of the device. The buttons and controls located on the exterior of this image-capturing device are also dust and water resistant. This eliminates any worry you may have of taking the professional DSLR camera outdoors during wind or light rain.

Weighing 2.6 pounds, this device is heavier than several of its competitors are, but the features available make the extra weight bearable. The 3-inch LCD display screen is built with protective glass and an anti-reflective film. The coverings make it possible to see the screen outdoors so you can adjust the settings and use the menu even in conditions that would normally produce a glare.

One of the standout features on this device is its ability to capture full HD video, with 1920 x 1080 resolution (along with 720p and 480p), and frame rates of 60p, 50p, 30p and 24p. The resulting recorded video is stunning and beautiful, and something Canon has perfected with their line of professional DSLRs. A large advantage over using a camcorder, is the ability to use the lenses – such as the standard, telephoto and wide-angle lens – which enhance the depth of field of the video image. Many camcorders have a fixed lens, which prevents users from using other lenses without a special adapter.

Depth of field is essentially determines which objects in a photo that are in focus. Wide-angle lenses tend to offer deep focus, or objects that are in sharp focus in the entire photo. Telephoto lenses allow for shorter focus, or shallow depth of field; it will appear that the background is soft while the subject or object is in focus. This is a popular feature on high-end digital video and film cameras that Hollywood directors use on major films. Many prosumer-level video cameras can’t achieve this, so independent filmmakers are relying on professional DSLRs, such as the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, to achieve short focus in their films.

Another HD recording feature found in the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV is the ability to have full manual exposure control. You just switch to manual mode and you have full control of the exposure. Image Quality

The device features your standard ISO range but extends from 50 all the way to 102400, which is great for extremely dark conditions. The only drawback of featuring such a high ISO speed is images have a greater chance of containing grain and noise. One of the ways Canon decided to eliminate the noise was to provide the Dual DIGIC 4 image processor. The processor not only works to keep the noise and grain to a minimum but is also designed to ensure that photos are clear and vivid. The image sensor size, 27.9 x 18.6 mm, allows for better shooting in darker conditions. The processor makes it possible for continuous shooting of up to 10 frames per second.

The new Al Servo II AF focus tracking is available on this professional DSLR camera. According to Canon, this technology is designed to improve stability, reliability and focus. We found the feature improves the device's ability to capture fast-paced subjects or landscape portraits with no blur from shaky hand movements or sudden gusts of wind.

Another feature on the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV we were highly impressed with is its compatibility with all EF Canon lenses. This means all lenses, from wide-angle, standard, telephoto and super telephoto, can be used on this device. This camera is designed for someone who wants an advanced camera but not a dSLR.

The Panasonic LUMIX G1 breaks new ground in digital cameras. Traditionally there have been 2 types of digital cameras: point and shoot and digital SLRs. Panasonic has taken the best of both worlds and combined them into one with their G1.

The LUMIX G1 features an interchangeable lens system, a first for non SLR digital cameras. Unlike digital SLRs, the G1 does not have a mirror box and relies solely on the full-time live view function.

Features

The Panasonic LUMIX G1 features an interchangeable lens system. This allows the user to select the lens that is best for any given application. Instead of being limited by a set zoom, you can simply put on a longer zoom lens to capture subjects that are farther away. Or you can put on a fish eye lens to capture images that are too close for standard lenses.

The G1 relies on a full-time Live View. This allows the use to see exactly how different settings will affect the photo before it is taken. You can either view the images on the large 3 inch LCD screen or use the viewfinder. Either way, the image you see is the same.

Panasonic has incorporated an intelligent auto system feature on the LUMIX G1. This mode activates 6 detection and compensation functions that work automatically. They are:

Shake detection - MEGA O.I.S.: Helps prevent blurring when the camera shakes.
Motion detection - Intelligent ISO Control: Helps prevent blur caused by subject motion.
Light detection - Intelligent Exposure: Adjusts the brightness of dark areas in the image.
Advanced Face Detection and Face Detection AF/AE: Helps deliver clear portraits.
Scene detection - Intelligent Scene Selector: Selects the optimal scene mode for the situation.

The large 3 inch LCD screen makes it easy to review the photos you have taken. The screen can even rotate 180 degrees horizontally and 270 degrees vertically. This makes it easier to take pictures from extreme angles such as holding the camera above your head.

In addition to the aforementioned features the Logitech Webcam HD C510 is a universal web cam which has been designed to clip onto any desktop or laptop computer. It can capture a full 360-degree view from atop a single computer. Although we were not completely impressed with the fit of the web cam on our monitors, it still did its job. The web camera did not fit as tightly as we were hoping it would, but the clip held it to the monitor tightly enough that it didn’t move or fall unexpectedly.

Logitech has designed their webcams to upload videos and photos to Facebook or YouTube in a single click. Accounts are required for both Facebook and YouTube, but the registration is free and it's a great way to share things with contacts across the globe. (If you are worried about your privacy, both Facebook and YouTube have privacy settings that allow you to choose who can see your uploads.)

An application that we found intriguing and useful is the face-recognition auto login. With the face-recognition auto login, the product will scan your face and save the specs which later will be used to quickly access your accounts. You can log onto various websites or to your computer though simply sitting down and letting the camera scan your face. We found it was easy and incredibly fast. We were pleased that it cut out the hassle of passwords and locked our computer when we walked away. The face-recognition auto-login technology is included in the web cam, but additional service costs are required to actually use it.

Ease of Use

Without even cracking open the user manual that comes with the Logitech HD Webcam C510 we were able to connect the USB web camera to our computer and begin using it to video chat. We were very impressed with the quality and with the options it provided right off the bat. There is a great deal of features available. It's not only packed with HD technology, editing features and image and sound tools but is also extremely easy to hook up and use.

Help & Support

Logitech provides two ways for their users to contact a customer support representative: by email and by phone. Logitech also provides a two-year warranty for each of the webcams. When you call or send an email, be ready to provide the support team with your product name, model number, part number and operating system. The customer support team is great to work with; it's apparent that Logitech stands behind their webcams. We received an auto-generated email letting us know that Logitech received our query and that they would respond within 48 hours. True to their word, we were contacted by a knowledgeable customer service rep within 48 hours who was able to address each of our questions.

Logitech has created a user manual that's easy to follow and informational. Because this product is so intuitively designed, you may never even need to crack open the user manual. But it is a great reference to keep nearby for those moments you decide to try something new; and it can be helpful for finding all the features the camera has to offer.

The F550EXR takes the highest-quality photos we've ever seen a digital camera take and processes them in the blink of an eye.

Design

It's true that all compact digital cameras are designed to be small, sleek and lightweight, and we think that this camera has the best design. It's simple and durable, and although it's not the smallest camera we reviewed, the lens placement and screen size contribute to the excellent pictures this camera takes. The FinePix F550EXR is easy to handle, and the controls are within a comfortable distance of your fingers as you hold the camera.

This digital camera comes with a built-in intelligent flash and 15x optical zoom, which make taking photos quicker, easier and more precise. Although the flash can be weak at times, you can fiddle with other settings such as ISO and the color effects to get a perfect picture. The 3-inch screen displays vivid pictures and works well as an easel on which you can edit your photos.

Image Quality

At 16 megapixels, the FinePix F550EXR has one of the highest resolutions we've seen in compact digital cameras. Cameras with more than 12 megapixels are often praised for their crisp photos, and with 16 million pixels, the FinePix F550EXR takes highly detailed, professional-quality pictures.
