Freelance Writing Jobs – December 1, 2009

Good morning and happy December! I hope that the holiday season is treating you well. Personally, I nearly knocked myself silly with turkey, and let’s not even go there with mashed potatoes and stuffing. How was yours?

Let’s get straight to it. I have three great gigs, one awful gig, and a tip to help you find more work.

The gigs

Video scripts – a scriptwriter who does compelling copy is needed for a series of videos relating to achievement, success, and redemption. Each script is meant to be short (2-3 pages). To apply, send in samples of your work and/or links to videos that you have already done. Compensation is $100 per script.
News articles – Allvoices.com is seeking freelance journalists for Provoices who can put together a great article and have some experience already doing so. Special attention will be given to correspondents in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as writers who cover technology, terrorism, the economy, the environment, U.S. politics, U.S. foreign policy, international affairs, immigration, health, science, entertainment, pop culture, and geographic beats, among others. To apply, send in a cover letter, clips of your work, and a resume. Compensation is up to $250 an article.
Blog articles – a Chicago-based law firm is seeking a blog writer for 15 – 25 articles per month. Writers will be responsible for producing content as well as ensuring all research is accurate. The topics include nursing home abuse, trucking accidents, and construction accidents, as well as a general personal injury blog. To apply, submit a bid on this site through Elance, which requires a monthly subscription. Pay is $60 per article.

Job tip of the week - your friends can be a great source of jobs. When I first started freelancing, I posted a status update stating that I was looking for freelance work, and within moments I had found my first $300 gig. Not bad, considering the work was fun and easy and I had a new sample to work with within moments. Don’t be afraid to ask friends and family if they need work done or know someone who does. In fact, that’s how you can find some great gigs.

Worst gig of the week – If you are a college student or someone looking to make extra income, that has experience with blogging and online promtions we need your assistance. We are a indie music label named ———. We are currently working with an artist named ——– that has majors looking at his movements. At this point we are looking for people that can create a buzz in the —— area and throughout the US. Please email us if you are interested and currently have a blogg with a strong following. Price to be discussed upon submittal

Any gig that starts by talking about college students or making extra income is generally not going to be a high paying or great freelance gig. It usually means that they’re looking for someone to do work on the cheap or for free. It doesn’t generally hurt to ask, but don’t be surprised when they ask you for a low rate–if there’s a rate at all. What makes this one especially bad? They want someone who already has a blog with a strong following. They pretty much want you to do work for free and already have done a bunch of other work for free in the past. I think you can pretty easily see why this one is safe to skip.

Blogger Needed for Post on PR and Blogger Relations – $75

This is just a reminder for a gig I’m personally hiring for (mentioned in our last set of freelance writing jobs). I’ll post the original ad with requirements below. I’ll be choosing the writer on Monday at noon eastern, so please email me your brief pitch asap to be considered (and please follow the instructions below).

AFW writer Jenn Mattern is looking for a freelance writer on blogger relations/PR for a one-off post for a new public relations writing blog. For tone, think edgy. The topic is “Guaranteed Ways to Piss Off Bloggers with Your Press Release.” The writer must have three years’ experience in the PR industry (preferably with some direct blogger relations experience). Pay is $75 an article at around 350 – 5oo words and should be scannable (such as list form). To apply, email jenn@allfreelancewriting.com with a 3 – 5 sentence pitch demonstrating tone and style noted above. Longer pitches will not be considered. Get to the point. Applications will be accepted through the 30th, with a writer chosen as of December 1st.

Good morning! This is the inaugural post for AFW’s revamped freelance writing jobs and blogging jobs. Expect these to come out every Tuesday and to be fairly comprehensive. I will try to encapsulate a wide range of jobs so if you don’t see something you like this week, check back next week.

The gigs

Feature article/book reviews - This freelance writing job offers $100 for articles and $50 for book reviews. The subject matter is gay/lesbian history, culture, and politics, so it’s best to browse the site and get a feel for their review first before applying. To apply, simply submit an article to them–articles have a minimum of 1,500 words and reviews 600.
Articles/book reviews/PR/commentary – This freelance writing job offers $150 for articles and $50 for book reviews. The subject matter is information technology service management, so it helps to have a strong background in IT, although arguably you may be able to write product reviews and press releases without as much experience. To apply, they require that you put together an outline for an article. Read the entire posting for more details!
Scriptwriter/copywriter – This freelance writer job pays from $1,000 to $5,000 per script. They are looking for a writer who can take technical information and make it presentable. A background in writing scripts is immensely helpful if not required. To apply, you need to submit a resume, samples incorporating strong story elements about taking business communications to a personal level, and wage expectations. Requires free registration. This job is open only to residents of southern California, as you’ll need to attend occasional client meetings (writing can be done from home).

Job tip of the week - I enjoy turning my favorite things into freelance writing jobs. I have pitched myself as a writer to restaurants, shops, and other local businesses, but I’ve also pitched myself to websites and blogs I enjoy. Someone has to create that content, right? Although this method might seem to have a high rejection rate, it isn’t any worse than applying for a posted freelance writing gig. Surprise yourself and put together a proposal for either a local business or favorite website and see what sort of response you get. If you don’t get any, send a polite followup. You would be even more surprised to see how many initial proposals get lost or ignored.

Worst gig of the week - I’m looking for a long term writer. Writer will be writing topics on “wedding related topics”, “twilight (the movie)” & “Christmas related topics”. Article is minimum of 550 words. I will need between 5-9 articles a day everyday. I’m going to be paying around $3-$4 an article depending on experience. Now, I started the budget at $36 for couple days worth of articles. Looking for someone ASAP, who can start immediately. Writer must have taken the article writing, creative writing and technical writing and blogging tests. Writer will also be responsible for answering Yahoo answers to promote my products and website.

Why is this freelance writing gig so terrible? Aside from the ridiculously low pay and high output, writing for this guy is not going to be very satisfying. He’s trying to crank junk SEO content, unless you happen to know a Twilight fan out there who’s getting married on Christmas. What makes it the worst, however, is that it’s on oDesk, where you work for a client for an hourly rate–and they have a program that you download and agree to let monitor your usage. If you’re a fast writer, you just got hosed!

Welp, this is my last job posting of this type. As you may have read yesterday (and if you didn’t, go here) we’re changing the format of job posts. Personally, I’m pretty excited by it even though I haven’t been doing job postings for very long. I have waded waist deep through links of inferior quality to bring you just what I’ve been able to thus far, so I know I’ve got my work cut out for me. At the same time, a weekly opportunity to rip into a scam artist, a demanding employer, or an outright abusive potential client feels good. So I hope that you’ll appreciate the change!

Freelance Writing Jobs No More – Sort Of

This is the last week you’ll find freelance writing jobs and blogging jobs posted every Monday through Friday here at All Freelance Writing. We’re making a change.

Instead of the normal daily lists, Clint will be posting once every Tuesday with just a handful of freelance writing jobs — the best of the best that are actually advertised on the Web. The absolute minimum pay allowed in our listings is $50 an article. While it’s nowhere near the upper end of the pay spectrum, we only want gigs that are a significant step up for beginning Web writers.

Why the Change?

Our freelance writing jobs were never intended for experienced writers. If you’re at all familiar with this blog you know my stance on that — the best jobs are not advertised, they won’t be found in any list on any blog, and you should be out building a platform and network instead of trolling listings if you really want to land them.

However, there have been plenty of general rumblings in the freelance writing niche these days about the poor quality of job listings, and that it’s hypocritical to post some of these freelance writing gigs while telling writers they can do better. And to some extent, I agree! There’s enough hypocrisy in this niche as it is, and All Freelance Writing is taking a step back while we re-think how we want to approach certain topics, like writing jobs.

What’s to Come?

We have a crazy amount of projects in the works that will help you grow your freelance writing career, from free online tools to a major industry report and much more. You won’t be coddled here. You won’t have us tell you what you want to hear just so you can feel good about being complacent in your writing career. You won’t have your hand held. If you want those things I’m sure there are plenty of other places on the Web that are happy to give it to you.

All Freelance Writing doesn’t target those writers. We’re here for the freelance writers who are serious about growing and improving their freelance careers — the ones who want to learn a bit more about the business side, the ones who want to truly separate themselves from the competition, the ones who don’t want to look back five years from now and realize they’re still in the same place earning the same kind of money with the same kind of freelance writing jobs.

You’ll be seeing more posts directly from me throughout the week moving forward, in addition to posts from other AFW staff writers. You can still expect a minimum of one post daily and often two.

Clint will be posting a few relatively decent jobs with descriptions right on the site each Tuesday (so you don’t have to click and visit just to see a gig isn’t what you’re looking for). He’ll also be including a weekly warning — highlighting one ad for a freelance writing job to avoid (giving tips on some of the subtle tricks used to disguise crap gigs in ad copy). You’ll also get a weekly tip on landing better freelance writing jobs in Clint’s posts.

We think this approach fits far better with All Freelance Writing’s goal of helping those writers who are willing to go out and help themselves by giving you tips and tricks to make the most of any time you do put into job hunting.

Feed Updates

This change will mildly affect how feeds are setup here. The job feed link will be removed next week. However, the feed itself will still be operational, so if you’re subscribed and you only want that single weekly job-related post you can keep your subscription as-is.

However, the new posts will be included in the main article feed (that category was previously excluded so post subscribers didn’t have to see the link lists for jobs they weren’t interested in anyway). If you’re subscribed to both feeds, I would suggest unsubscribing from the jobs feed as the main feed will have those posts anyway — no need to get it twice.

If you have questions or suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment. If there are any hiccups when the feeds change I hope you’ll let me know.

Freelance Writing Jobs – Your “Get More Gigs” Tip of the Day

Stop trolling job boards for hours each week, and put that time to better use directly pitching your services. Have you seen a company website that could use a good edit? Pitch it (tactfully). Do you think a local company could benefit from a new white paper? Pitch it. Have an idea for an article for your favorite company’s email newsletter? Pitch that too! The best gigs are rarely advertised publicly. The client might not even realize they need to hire a writer or editor until you contact them. Get to it!

Freelance Writing Jobs – Your “Get More Gigs” Tip of the Day

Post your rates online. If you have a professional site, include your rates along with your services. Not only will you weed out inquiries from people who can’t afford you anyway, but you’ll save prospective clients time. Remember, every time you respond and send a quote you’re wasting time that could be put into billable hours or other marketing efforts, especially if your rates are somewhat standard. Don’t waste time sending the same info to several people. Worried you’ll lose flexibility? You won’t! Just post a rate range or average instead (and make that clear on the site). If you want people to hire you, you have to give them the information they need to make that decision between you and the competition.

Freelance Writing Jobs – Your “Get More Gigs” Tip of the Day

One of the best ways to land more freelance writing jobs is to make sure prospective clients are able to find you when they search for writers. Check your professional website’s search engine rankings for your main keyword terms. If you aren’t on the first page of results, work on your SEO (build incoming links, make sure your website content is actually related to your keyword targets, etc.). People are lazy. They rarely search several pages deep into results. You have to rank well if you want to get their attention.
