Burying our heads in the sand

     Sixty years is not so long ago. It is within the lifetime of people still alive today. But even if it were one hundred years or 200 years, it is not too long ago that we should try to bury its truths in the grave of ancient history.
    This country was founded on racism and genocide, and until we come to terms with that, we will never be free from its painful grasp on our hearts and minds.
     Charles LaFontaine, a black man, was without a doubt the victim of racism. You know that and I know that. There are people alive, right now, who know what happened to him —maybe even had something to do with his death.
     Sheriff Sweet and Vern Van Bibber, and others, say it is too long ago, or it will cost too much money, or it will be divisive. I say, that’s okay. We need to confront it, at whatever cost, in order to heal ourselves and put our community back in balance.
     This entire nation needs some kind of truth and reconciliation process to answer for the genocide of indian peoples and the slavery of Africans. Until we do this we can have no real moral authority in the world, and we will never be a healthy people.
     There’s no cost too great for justice.

Walkingstick levels charges on investigation delay

City Councilor, Willie Walkingstick believes the delay in the LaFontaine murder investigation is deliberate, and at a press conference today, he leveled charges against Sheriff Tony Sweet and Vernon Van Bibber, one of Germaine’s leading citizens.

“It’s been three months since the FBI agreed to look into the LaFontaine case,” Walkingstick said, “and no agent has yet been assigned.”

When asked why he believes Sweet and Van Bibber are responsible, Walkingstick cited an unnamed source within the Sheriff’s Office. He also pointed out that both Sweet and Van Bibber have previous close relationships with the Bend office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“Vernon Van Bibber is overly protective of this town,” said Walkingstick. “There is no doubt in my mind that he would like to delay this case until it just goes away. I’m not going to let that happen.”

Sweet and Van Bibber both flatly denied influencing the FBI to delay investigation into the 50-year-old murder. “Walkingstick has a hair up his butt,” said Sheriff Sweet. “He’s a disgrace to the city.”

     Life, as created by God, is a precious and sacred thing. We have a great responsibility to nurture all such life, especially that life which feeds and sustains God’s people. The arrival in our community of the giant, multi-national company Malsanto, therefore, raises for us a profound ethical question.
     Malsanto, a company which made its fortune producing poisons—pesticides and herbicides, including defoliants used in Vietnam to clear thousands of acres of jungle—has gone into the God Business, creating life forms by combining genetic materials across species. Some say that this is progress. Those people say that God meant humankind to take over his work, to make things better for all.
     But this begs two related questions: is this God’s work? and, is this for the betterment of humanity?
     It is reasonably argueable that pesticides and herbicides have allowed us to create harvests unimaginable a century ago. But when we ask, “at what cost?” the benefit becomes more ambiguous. The abandonment of sound farming practices for the chemical quick fix has left much of our once-productive land barren and poisoned, has caused cancers and other illnesses, and has left us with poor quality food.
     Now, Malsanto and its promoters want us to believe that its new genetically-modified products are also for our benefit. These products include specialized plants and so-called terminator seeds. Let’s question the assumption that these creations will improve the lot of humanity.
     One new life form is the herbicide resistant plant. Not only are these plants untested on humans, but their use will likely encourage an increased volume of herbicides, multiplying the poisons in the earth, and the cancers in the body. Add to that the greed factor—the plants are only resistant to certain herbicides produced by Malsanto—and you must begin to question the motives of the producers.
     Another product, the terminator seed, produces sterile offspring, thus requiring the farmer to purchase new seeds the next season. Not only will this practice create dependence on Malsanto for future harvests, but, if widely adopted, will deplete the earth’s genetic seed stock. Again, the sin of greed appears to be a prime motivational factor in Malsanto’s agenda.
     It is the terminator seed which I believe to be the most egregious assault on God’s Plan. It goes directly against His commandment to “go forth and replenish the earth.” The deliberate creation of food plants with sterile seeds, is not a life affirming action, but a death wish.
     To support the actions of this company is to embrace the wrong side in our eternal struggle with evil.

Will Gives Me a Compliment

Last night, we camped on the main fork of the Blue River. I was much too tuckered to write my diary, so I will try to remember about it. The traveling was pretty good both days, and the road was smoothe. Uncle Luke said that we are now about one day behind the Savannah Oregon Emigrating Company. Someone from that company talked to him, and asked if we would join them. Uncle Luke told Papa that they wanted too much money, and he was skeptical of their motives, but he would put it to the group.

Later, in the evening, the company was divided as usual. They voted with Papa to stay by ourselves, at least for now.

No clamor in the night, because Papa and Mr. Pembrook didn’t hang any pots and pans. Thank Heavens!

The weather today was good, although, for a moment, it threatened to rain. Annabelle was out of sorts, so, Mama let us ride in the wagon.

Will came by as I was writing this. He was glad to know that I could write well. He said that maybe I could write articles for his newspaper when I’m old enough. Papa said that writing newspapers is a man’s job, and is unseemly for a girl. But I don’t understand why.

We traveled 12 miles yesterday, and another 14 miles today.
