We congratulate Sylvia Wilkins and her team for a large and excellently-organized Craft Fair on October 30^th which made us new friends and made a good profit for church funds.

Elsewhere in the Heron you will see Ann Jordan’s article as she steps down from leadership of our Sunday School. Ann began another chapter in our long Sunday School tradition when she revived it after a three-year break back in 2002?. Throughout that time, she has led it with dedication, professionalism and imagination, and with great care for the children. I express the church’s thanks to her; but her greatest reward will I know be the gratitude of a generation of the church’s children, who will remember their Sunday School years with pleasure and thanks for what they have learned there about God, his world, and not least themselves. Thank you Ann – and of course your hardworking team.

I am so glad that Phil and Janet Hearn, who have been Sunday School helpers for several years, have agreed to continue it for one of the two Sundays per month; they will lead the teaching, while Yvonne Gimson leads the pastoral side. Thankk you to all three and helpers. I am still working on what we do on the other Sunday – parents and children, I will be in touch with you early in the New Year.

ALL HALLOWS’ SUNDAY SCHOOL 2003-2010.

In 2002 the Vicar and PCC identified the need for ‘another’ Sunday School, because of the increasing number of children and young families attending church, particularly at the ‘Sunday Light’ service. Most of the families attended the Mark 1 ‘Hall Half Hour’ Sundays for three years, but the children were no longer babies or toddlers and needed more spiritual nurturing. I was asked to lead the new Sunday School, to which I was initially opposed, since I believed the way forward with young families was the informal church service. However, after much thought and a great deal of prayer, I agreed.
The past seven years have been busy with lots of events: parties, picnics, prize-giving, presentations, fund rasing, visits, as well as the two Sundays a month teaching and worshipping.
The children attending have varied over the years but the numbers have remained constant at an average of seventeen. We began with a group of under-7s and we now have a group where the majority are either top juniors or are at secondary school. Those children who were with us from the start are now young people. The spiritual needs of this older group at Sunday School are much different to those of the group which started in 2003.
Throughout the seven years the parents of the Sunday School children have given brilliant support both to the children, the leaders and to the church.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to Yvonne Gimson, Jane Barber and more recently Janet and Phil Hearn for their unfailing support.
Most of all I want to thank the Sunday School children and young people for their trust and for their friendship.

‘Hall Half Hour’ ‘Toddlers’ Church’.

‘Hall Half Hour’ ‘Toddlers’ Church’. What’s in a name? Quite a lot, actually, and the organizing group have decided that ‘Toddlers’ Church’ says more about what we are about than ‘Hall Half Hour’ and is likely to be more attractive, so that is what we will be calling it in our publicity. But it won’t affect the content of what we do on third Sunday mornings in the Hall, with songs, stories, crafts and refreshments for the under 5s and their families and friends.

You are invited to come along from 11th October to 15th November with prayer and food on 22nd November.
I know it’s early for an Advent course, but December is so busy. Why not take this opportunity to stop and think before the rushing around starts, and help

New Church and Halls Sign Board.

Notice the new Church and Halls Sign board at the junction of Trent Boulevard and Pierrepont Road. A small thing, but a lot of work has been put in by Sylvia Wilkins getting expensive planning permission. We thank Sue for allowing us to put it in her garden and our Councillors and Mallenders for making a grant available.
