In Tamil films, where heroes are either super humans or superstars, there is no place for talented actresses. Heroines are just used to add glamour to the film.

Last year, the woman-centric film Poo gave Parvathy ample opportunity to showcase her talent. But this year, we only have Ananda Thandavam, where the heroine is the mainstay of the film.

Here are the actresses who have really impressed us this year.

Tamannah

Undoubtedly, 2009 belonged to Tamannah. From the way filmmakers are lining up behind her, she will be the most sought after actress in 2010 as well.

The top slot, which was vacant when Asin shifted to Bollywood and Nayantara to Telugu cinema, has now been taken over by Tamannah. With Ayan -- the biggest hit of 2009 -- Tamannah has truly arrived.

The superhit was followed by the Tamil remake of Jab We Met, Kanden Kathalai. Tamannah made the character her own, and no one compared her to Jab We Met heroine Kareena Kapoor.

But she was the most impressive in Ananda Thandavam, the film adaptation of Sujatha's novel Pirivom Sandipom. As Madhumita, Tamannah showed that she could be innocent and cunning at the same time. It was the best performance of the year.

Harris in Sydney!

The sensational composer is in Sydney now! Harris Jayaraj celebrated Christmas along with his family in the foreign country this year and is planning to enjoy his New Year there as well…

Harris is in Sydney for composing songs for Prabhu Deva’s ‘Ich’ so, it's an official cum personal trip for him. Sources close to the composer say that Harris will be leaving Sydney after completing the work for ‘Ich’ and will land in China for working on K V Anand’s ‘Ko’.

We hear that it was Prabhu Deva who came up with the idea of making a song in which the lead pair sings a duet on the streets of Sydney on the day of Christmas. Produced by AGS International, ‘Ich’ has ‘Jayam’ Ravi and Shruthi Haasan in the lead.

Oh cool… So thus we get a young pair singing a youthful song on foreign streets!

Kajal’s setback

Kajal Agarwal is on cloud nine after the astounding success of Magadheera. Though her latest release Arya 2 was making good collections at the box office, the setback came in the form of Telangana issue.

The actress, on her forthcoming projects, says that she has been signed to star opposite Karthi in Naan Mahaan Alla. She also has a Tollywood film in which Junior NTR plays the lead role.

With talks doing rounds that Magadheera is being remade in Hindi, Kajal is open to taking up the role if it is offered to her.

Dhanush crosses the border with family!

Bhagiyaraj in ‘Ready’

“Filmmaker K Bhagiyaraj is doing an important role in my forthcoming movie starring Dhanush, which is a remake of Telugu superhit ‘Ready’,” says director Mithran R Jawahar.

The young director, who is eagerly expecting the release of ‘Kutty’ (again with Dhanush in the lead role), which too is a remake of a Tollywood blockbuster (‘Arya’), says, “I am a huge fan of Bhagiyaraj. I feel proud to say that I am going to work with him.”

On working with Dhanush again and again, Jawahar, whose first film is ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’, says, “it is a sheer coincidence. At the same time, I have to say that working with Dhanush is sheer pleasure. I am very comfortable to be his colleague.”

Draw his attention to the fact that he is concentrating on remakes alone, he says, “this too is a sheer coincidence like how I am working with Dhanush again and again. I struggled for more than 10 years as an assistant director. I had approached many producers with my own storyline, but my efforts went in vain.”

Jawahar however says: “My first three films are remakes. But my fourth venture would be based on my own script.”

The cricket fan in Sameera Reddy has come out in open at last. The actress hopes of owning an Indian Premier League (IPL) team in the future and says cricket and films are the two things she is passionate about.

“I would love to be associated with IPL. I’ll buy an IPL team some day. I am fond of both cricket and movies. These two things are my passions,” the ‘Varanam Aayiram’ girl says with a bright smile.

Sameera, who celebrated her birthday recently, hopes that the year ahead would take her to further heights, thanks to Ajith starrer ‘Asal’ in which she is an inevitable part. Interestingly, she took part in the shoot of the movie on her special day, without even taking a break.

Ask her why, she says: “How could I disturb others work in the name of my birthday? I had given my callsheet for the day (for ‘Asal’) already and I couldn’t cancel it just like that. Hence, I was shooting non-stop.”

Heaping laurels on Ajith, she says, “He is a man of discipline and dignity. One can’t find him wasting time unnecessarily. Even during breaks, he would keep himself occupied by doing something.”

Kajal Agarwal’s career graph is moving upward ever since the release of ‘Magadheera’, which had Chiranjeevi’s son Ramcharan Teja in the lead. The new numero uno actress of Tollywood is all set to enter Bollywood too, reports suggested.

Media reports had it that she would repeat her role in the Hindi remake of ‘Magadheera’, in which Hrithik Roshan would replace Ramcharan Teja.

When asked, the actress said, “I have been getting feelers from various quarters about my willingness to take up the project. But I haven't been directly approached by the production house. So I don't want to confirm it.”

Magadheera, directed by S S Rajamouli, is an action extravaganza that travels between two centuries. Kajal’s performance as a princess and a modern girl won accolades. Meanwhile, the pretty actress has signed up ‘Naan Magan Alla’ opposite Karthi in Tamil.

Vijay and Surya up for April clash

Both the actors Vijay and Surya were supposed to have a box office clash for Diwali 2009. But due to last minute changes, Vijay’s ‘Vettaikaran’ was postponed to December while ‘Aadhavan’ was released for Diwali.

Now, we hear that both the actor may have their upcoming films hitting screens together in April 2010.

Surya has almost completed shooting for ‘Singam’ and buzz is that the film’s audio will be launched during last week of January. When it comes to ‘Sura’, Vijay himself has confirmed that his film will be released on April 14.

It’s worth mentioning that ‘Sura’ is Vijay’s 50th film while ‘Singam’ will be Surya’s 25th film.

Kutty-AO brings war of the brothers?

'Kutty' that has Dhanush in the lead will be another family entertainer from Mithran Jawahar who gave ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’ with Dhanush earlier. Now, the successful combo is ready to lock horns with Selva’s long pending ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ with Karthi-Reemma-Andrea in the lead.

Industry sources feel that Pongal has a line-up of expected movies, that will make the competition rock solid. But, when asked if ‘Kutty’ and ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ may work against each other, Mithran Jawahar was confident that both the films are of complete different genres and they have got their very own audiences.

On the other hand we hear that 'Goa' won’t be making it for the Pongal race as promised, due to some unknown reasons.

Interestingly, 'Goa' produced by Dhanush’s sis-in-law Soundarya Rajinikanth is a ticket from the same family. Therefore, we hear that the family war has cooled a little as one participant has chosen to take another day for the release.

Who is a good actor or what is good acting? To make it simple, let us try a more direct question. Which is the better performance – Prakash Raj in Kancheevaram or Vijay in Vettaikaran? Many of you might find this comparison absurd. That is completely understandable because it is difficult to adjust to a comparison which is never thought of and involves two performances that are poles apart in scope. But, let us persevere with it. Is it Prakash Raj in Kancheevaram or Vijay in Vettaikaran? To enable everyone to connect with the type of comparison that is being attempted, let us try Kamal in Anbey Sivam and Vijay in Ghilli (assuming that almost everyone has seen both these movies). Again, this is one comparison that will look totally against convention and preset notions about good acting. There is absolutely no doubt that almost everyone, if not absolutely everyone, will plump for the portrayal of Nalla Sivam by the legendary Kamal Haasan. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the choice. It was indeed a master class from Kalaignani. But, this is not about Kalaignani, this is about the other actor, Vijay, and the breed of actors that he represents. What is the class that Vijay represents? The actor, who plays to the galleries, makes movies for fans, looks to entertain and doesn’t care much about critics. One gets the feeling that this class of actors is not sometimes given the respect that is their due. Not that they seem to particularly care, they are happy to see the masses enjoying their films. But, there seems to be a general opinion floating around amongst the so called A class audiences about the full-fledged commercial actor. Some of the important points seem to be; 1. they have no brains or have stopped using them 2. they can’t act even if their life depended on it 3. can’t do anything except dance, fight and look good 4. are obsessed with their larger than life image. Yes, some of the points mentioned here might be a bit exaggerated. But, it cannot be denied that there are many people who do carry opinions that are very much similar to the above mentioned. The point is that many of the commercial heroes of our times are taken for granted. The skill and charisma that they bring to the screen is sometimes totally ignored because they are supposed to be stereotypical or clichéd. The thing that we tend to forget sometimes is that the job they do is not everybody’s cup of tea. It has to be admitted that pulling off a larger than life character, mouthing punch lines, bashing up 50 odd men single handedly and other such cinematic items is not child’s play. Let’s try thinking of it this way- which is the bigger challenge- playing a true to life character or a larger than life character? Playing a true to life character demands a actor to behave much like an ordinary man would do in situations that life throws at him. But, a larger than life character demands an actor to create a mould for himself, craft his own style ad become a different person, a type that does not exist in normal life. True to life characters have templates, models and examples – a larger than life character has none (except in cinema). The energy, the inspiration and the ideas have to come from within the performer. It takes a lot of work, thought and talent to make an audience take a liking to an actor in a larger than life role. It is not every actor who can pull off a 5 fight, 5 songs and punch dialogue routine without looking silly. Only a select few have that level of screen presence and persona to make the audience (not all sections) clap in delight when they go through these predictable yet enjoyable routines. One also feels that the delivery of the punch dialogue is one of the least appreciated skills in the film industry. It takes tremendous confidence and faith in one’s ability to say lines that sometimes outgrow the script itself. Very few actors can mouth such lines without eliciting sniggers and sneers from the audience. To see the point more clearly, try answering this question. How many commercial ‘larger than life stars’ have at least one well performed true to life character to their credit? Almost everyone, would be the answer. Every commercial star has played a down to earth guy at least once in their career if not more number of times. But, can the converse be said about actors who play only the real-life type of characters. That is, does every ‘reality’ actor have at least one ‘larger than life’ role to their credit? Very few have been successful in such attempts. Our full fledged commercial heroes do have the ability (they may not be class actors) to play some really well fleshed out characters. But, they do their kind of stuff in the industry because that is what is given to them. This might be a controversial statement, but, a good character actor is easier to replace than a commercial star. Character artistes have specializations – some are good at comedy, some at sentiments, some at villainy, some at action etc…. but, a commercial hero is expected to do just about everything in a 3 hour film. He plays the loving son (sentiment), the man in love (romance), capers around with the comedian, dances frenetically in songs and is full of energy in the stunts. A person who can carry of all this at a time is definitely talented. It is this ambivalent skill set of a star that is sometimes portrayed as silly mindless commercialism because ‘he is capable of nothing else’. Yes, commercial stars do fail. When they fail, they look miserable to the point of being a joke. That is because making such cocktails of entertaining ingredients has a very fine balance which can easily be upset. Making commercial entertainers is a tight rope walk and our commercial heroes are at it all the time. That is why we see them falter and fall at times. But, let us not hold it against them and certainly let us not accuse them of being non-talented dim wits who cannot act. Look at the skills that they have, the entertainment that they deliver and the mass appeal that they command – you might be convinced that it takes a lot of skill and work to be one of that kind. Let us give them the respect that is their due.

Billa producer wins

The Indian Film Federation has been recently divided into four zones – North, South, East and West. It has also decided to conduct the elections zone-wise to select the President once in every five years. And this time, it is the South Zone’s turn to conduct the elections. The election was conducted as per the rules in which Karnataka’s KC Chandresan and Tamil Nadu’s Ananda Pictures’ Suresh contested.

The results were declared soon after the elections and B Suresh emerged victorious.

It is worth a mention here that Suresh is the producer of Ajith starrer Billa.

Kanthasamy celebrates

Kanthasamy’s 100th day celebrations were held at the Nadigar Sangam premises yesterday, Thursday, December 24, 2009. The event was attended by the villagers of Vannivelpatti who were adopted as a part of the charity project launched by the producers of Kanthasamy, Kalaipuli S. Thanu. Vikram, Shreya, Y G Mahendran, Susi Ganesan, S. Thanu and Cinematographer Ekambaram were felicitated by the villagers present.

The event was also attended by FEFSI President V C Guhanathan, director Bhagyaraj and lyricist Vivega.
