We Held The Plane For You

A Southwest Airlines pilot delayed his plane by 12 minutes to ensure a passenger would be able to say goodbye to his murdered grandson.

The man's three-year-old grandchild had been killed by his daughter's live-in boyfriend in Denver and was due to be taken off life support ahead of donating his organs.

More than 25 people will receive his gift tonight and many lives will be saved.

A pilot showed an act of extraordinary kindness by delaying his plane by 12 minutes to ensure a passenger would be able to say goodbye to his murdered grandson.

Mark Dickinson was rushing from Los Angeles to Aurora, Colorado to pay his last respects to his two-year-old grandson who had allegedly been attacked by his daughter's live-in boyfriend.

The little boy was later that night due to be taken off his life support machine ahead of donating his organs to up 25 people.

But his grandfather was in danger of missing his connecting flight from L.A. to Tucson, Arizona - until the Southwest Airlines pilot stepped in to help him.

Having been in Los Angeles on business, Mr Dickinson's wife Nancy had arranged for him to transfer at Tucson airport onto a flight bound for Denver, Colorado to be with his bereaved 26-year-old daughter.

She is believed to be Ashley Rodgers, whose two-year-old son Caden was attacked on January 5th and died the following day.

'I was panicking because I was running late and I didn't think I was going to make the flight', Mr Dickinson said.

'That's all I was thinking about, "I'm going to miss the flight". It was sad and I felt anxious because I didn't know what would happen if I missed the flight'.

Despite arriving at Los Angeles International Airport two hours before his flight was due to depart, lengthy check-in lines meant the dead boy's grandfather faced a race against time to board on schedule.

Mr Dickinson said that airport employees would not let him cut into the security line.

'They were of the opinion that it didn't matter what my situation was, I needed to go like everybody else', he said.

But even after sprinting from the security checkpoint in his socks, he still arrived at the departure gate 12 minutes late.

But the Southwest pilot intervened and held the plane to allow the grief-stricken man onto the flight.

According to a letter written to travel blog Elliott.org by Mr Dickinson's wife Nancy, he was greeted by the pilot and ticketing agent with the words: 'Are you Mark? We held the plane for you and we’re so sorry about the loss of your grandson.'

The flight had been due to take off at 11:50am that morning but had been held until 12:02 to allow the man to board the plane.

Travel blogger Christopher Elliott who originally posted the story said the minutes the pilot waited is a long time in airline travel.

'Southwest can turn an entire plan around in about 20 mniutes, so 12 minutes is half an enternithy', Mr Elliott explained.

Nancy's letter continued: 'As my husband walked down the Jetway with the pilot, he said, “I can’t thank you enough for this.”

'The pilot responded with, “They can’t go anywhere without me and I wasn’t going anywhere without you. Now relax. We’ll get you there. And again, I’m so sorry.”'

Thanks to the kindness of the pilot, the man was able to reach his daughter in Denver and bid farewell to his grandson.

Mr Dickinson, his daughter and other family members were with Caden when his life support was pulled at 9.20pm that night.

Commenting on the compassion of its employees, a Southwest spokesperson said the airline was 'proud' of the pilot's behaviour.

Police say Ashley Rodgers came home from work to find her two-year-old son Caden lying on the floor and bleeding from the back of his head and with swollen bruises on his forehead.

Her boyfriend Theodore Madrid, 30, has been charged with murder.

Authorities said the toddler was thrown across a room, likely slamming his head on a bed frame. He died the day after he was injured.

An autopsy revealed he died of severe injuries to his brain and cranial nerves, according to the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office.

Madrid waited two hours to call 911 because he said he was afraid of getting into trouble, police said.

The accused man told police that he was drunk and high on marijuana on January 5 when Caden was injured according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Aurora Sentinel newspaper.

Madrid was charged on Monday with first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse resulting in death.

He is beign held in the Arapahoe County jail. His bond has been set at $500,000.

Police said Madrid told them he became angry when the boy did not want to wrestle with him any more and threw him out of frustration.

Officers went to the couple’s apartment after Ms Rodgers called 911 shortly after midnight.

Rodgers said her son, who was being watched by Madrid while she worked, had hit his head and wouldn’t wake up, according to the affidavit.

Police said when they entered the apartment, the boy was lying on the floor and bleeding from the back of his head. He had bruises on his forehead, officers said.

Madrid first told police that he 'body slammed' Caden onto a bed, but later said he picked him up and threw him, according to the affidavit.

Caden's mother Ashley told police that she had never seen Madrid display any violene against her son in the past.

However, Ashley told police that the night before, Madrid had called her at work to say he had been 'kinda rough' with Caden while wrestling with him.

An affidavit filed in the case said that police photographed several bloody rags and towels in the bedroom, and blood on the floor, carpet, bedding, bed frame, doors, mirrors and walls.

Police also photographed marijuana found on a dresser and a window sill as well as open alcohol containers around the room.

Tests showed that Madrid had a blood alcohol level of 0.177, well above the legal driving limit of 0.08, police said.

The boy's grandmother Nancy M. Dickinson told ABC News: 'The family strongly believes the punishment should fit the crime. He committed a heinous act and shows no remorse for it'.

'Caden will never have the chance to experience life the way he should have', she added.
