Mountains, forests, and open landscapes frequently become part of the experience, giving the round a sense of space that contrasts with urban travel.

Visitors may also notice that the pace of the day can feel more deliberate. At many courses, it is still common to pause after the first nine holes for a meal break before continuing. This tradition reflects the idea of golf as something to be enjoyed over time rather than rushed.

Before approaching the main hall at many temples and shrines, visitors pause at a purification basin, known as a chōzuya or temizuya. This simple water ritual represents preparing the body and mind before entering sacred space. It is a gesture of respect, not a requirement for worship, and can be done quietly even if you are unfamiliar with the customs.

How to purify respectfully:

1. Pick up the ladle with your right hand and pour water over your left hand.

2. Switch hands, and pour water over your right hand.

3. With your left hand, pour a little water into your palm and gently rinse your mouth.

   • Do not drink the water — discreetly spit onto the stones beside the basin, not back into the basin.

   • If you do not feel comfortable with the mouth-rinse, many temples allow hand purification only, which is perfectly acceptable.

4. Lift the ladle upright so the remaining water runs down the handle to cleanse it for the next person, then set it back neatly.

Common guidance emphasizes that this ritual is not about cleaning for hygiene; it symbolizes washing away distraction and entering with a calmer mindset.

A few helpful notes:

• Take your time — this is not a rushed action.

• Keep movements small to avoid splashing others.

• If unsure, simply observing others first is a respectful choice.

Performing purification, even simply by rinsing your hands, shows appreciation for the tradition and deepens your connection to the experience ahead.

At the center sits the Main Hall — striking in deep red tones and supported by ornate wooden brackets. This building dates to the Edo period and is considered a cultural treasure of the local community.

Although the sacred statue inside remains concealed, people visit the Main Hall every day to offer prayers for family safety, health, well-being, and general life blessings. The sense of warmth and presence lingering in this hall is unmistakable — it feels like thousands of prayers held together under one roof.

Now, it wouldn’t quite be a trip to Kamakura without sipping on a pint of the famous Kamakura beer.

Unlike regular beer, Kamakura’s is known for its smooth, mellow mouthfeel and deep aroma. It’s made from carefully selected yeast, hops, and malt – all ingredients that pair beautifully with the components in the local cuisine.

Hokoku-ji is a must-visit for those seeking a peaceful escape surrounded by nature, history, and the calming presence of bamboo.

A Nichiren temple perched in Kamakura’s southeastern hills, the Chokozan Myohonji temple was originally founded back in 1260 by Hiki Yoshimoto. One of the oldest Nichiren temples in the area, Chokozan Myohonji was founded by Hiki Daigaku Saburo Yoshimoto, Hiki Yoshikazu’s youngest child.

One of the temple’s most impressive feature is no doubt its Founding Priest’s Hall, which is also known as a Soshido. By far the temple’s most prominent structure, this hall houses a wooden sculpture that depicts Nichiren. Built in the 14^th century, the statue stands as the temple’s main and most important deity.

When strolling through the temple grounds, keep your eyes peeled for the Niten-Mon gate, also referred to as ‘Two Heaven’s Gates’. Dating back to 1840, this imposing scarlet structure is found right in front of Soshido Hall. The Niten-Mon gate also contains the  Tamonten and Jikokuten statues. 

• By Train:

  • Take the JR Yokosuka Line from Tokyo Station to Kamakura Station (about 60 minutes).
  • From Kamakura Station, take a Keikyu Bus (bound for Zushi) and get off at the Goryo Jinja bus stop (about 10 minutes).
  • The shrine is a short walk from the bus stop.

• By Car:

  • The drive from Tokyo takes about 1.5 hours via the Yokohama-Yokosuka Expressway.
  • There is limited parking near the shrine, so public transport is a good option.
