New York Fashion Week 2009

New York Fashion Week 2009 has alreadys started Friday morning but some of the biggest names in the industry have pulled back and many have down-sized their lavish celebrations in favor of more toned down approach. Many designers are worried that buyers are holding back on making big ticket purchases due to the poor economy.

The fashion industry is notorious for it’s excess but it is faced a shrinking market where the number of people willing to drop big bucks on clothing and accessories is dwindling. This drop in demand has many of the top designers cutting back on their promotions at New York Fashion Week 2009.

Maria Puente at the USAToday writes :

Vera Wang, Betsey Johnson, Donna Karan, Monique Lhuillier, Naeem Khan and Alice Temperley are among those who canceled runway shows under the tents in New York’s Bryant Park, in part because these lavish presentations can cost millions and include thousands of guests. Instead, they’re opting for downsizing to more informal, less expensive presentations (hundreds of guests, thousands of dollars) in stores, salons, studios or showrooms. “The intimacy of a smaller show feels much more appropriate for these times,” Wang told Women’s Wear Daily.

One designer, Carmen Marc Valvo, found a free space, the restaurant/lounge Citrine, to stage his show. Temperley, designer Marc Bouwer and Rock & Republic are among those staging virtual fashion shows online, a trend likely to accelerate if the recession lingers.

Marc Jacobs, whose over-the-top shows typically feature 2,000 guests jam-packed in an armory, will invite only 700 guests this year. He’s also forgoing his usual elaborate sets and the post-show party.

Michelle Obama’s Inauguration Day Dress Designed by Isabel Toledo

It was a cold day in Washington DC but President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle warmed the hearts of millions of well wishers who braved the cold to see them. President Obama was dressed in his usual formal attire, looking slender, self assured and poignant as he greeted the crowds.

First lady Michelle Obama was wearing a sparkling pale yellow wool ensemble designed by Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo, who was formerly the creative director at Anne Klein. Isabel went so far as to sew insulated fabric into the lining of the coat so Mrs. Obama would stay warm during the long outdoor event. Barney’s will be offering a spring version of the dress in March that will retail for $1,500.

The first lady accessorized the Isabel Toledo ensemble with a pair of diamond ear studs, a dazzling diamond brooch, a pair of green leather gloves by J. Crew, and Jimmy Choo Glacier pumps in green.

Apparently some people didn’t think Mrs. Obama’s style was so appealing. At Guanabee.com, Alejandra Alvarez reports Cuban-American Designer Isabel Toledo Created Michelle Obama’s Inaugural Outfit, Internet Commenters Think It Sucks - which includes a quote from the LA Times‘ blog:

Rather disappointing choice for a woman who generally has excellent fashion sense. Going to have to kick it up a notch from this dowdy outfit if she wants to be the next Jackie/Diana (not saying she wants to be but an awful lot of people seem to want her to be). Will be interesting to see how fashionistas blog this one - if they will react with a First Lady “wears no clothes” isn’t it wonderful mentality.

As if that weren’t enough, I was reading the article The Inauguration: Michelle Obama’s dress comes from designer Isabel Toledo at the Dallas Morning News and a commentor named “ravenhair” had this to say:

I don’t like Michelle or Barack Obama. I can’t wait for the next four years to be over; HOWEVER, Michelle is an attractive enough woman and has worn some nice clothes, but not today. That dress was simply awful. Any comparison to Jackie Kennedy stopped today. Michelle and Aretha need to change designers - quick!

Well, I just have to say that Mrs. Obama is not trying to be a fashion model like Naomi campbell, Gisele Bundchen or Heidi Klum. Mrs. Obama’s style reflects somebody who values sincerity and intelligence over shallowness. The Obama’s are the quintessential couple and their fashion style is not flashy, it’s functional.

I’m not the biggest sports fan in the world but having grown up in a house with three brothers and a father who is a total sports nut, I’ve grown to appreciate some of the finer elements of sporting events. While I’ve never been into “jocks” because I find most of the guys who think they are real jocks to be the biggest dorks, it’s undeniable that there are a lot of totally hot guys in professional sports.

Here’s my picks for the top 10 hottest male athletes. This list is only my opinion, I don’t watch al ot of sports to know everybody, so don’t drop a bomb on me if your favorite jock isn’t listed here.

#10) Brady Quinn - Brady Quinn played college football at Notre Dame, where he set many school records and now he is a quarterback with the Cleveland Browns.

#9) David Beckham - David Beckham is a famous soccer star who, when not modeling underwear for Calvin Klein, plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy and is also a member of the England national team.

#8) Michael Phelps - Michael Phelps is an swimmer who won 14 career Olympic gold medals and also holds seven world records in swimming. He’s not really my type but I figured I’d add him to this list anyway.

#7) Dwayne Wade - Dwayne Wade is one of the best young talents in the NBA and one of the best looking guys in the NBA. He also has great fashion style.

#6) Tom Brady - Tom Brady is the quarterback for the New England Patriots and he has been dating Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen.

#5) Shaun Phillips - Shaun Phillips is football player with the San Diego Chargers. He also has a great smile.

#4) Chipper Jones - Chipper Jones is a baseball player with the Atlanta Braves. He looks like a cross between Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon. This is a pic of him fishing. He lives in Deland, FL which is only a few minutes on I4 from where I live !!!

#3) Jacoby Ellsbury - Jacoby Ellsbury is an outfielder for the Boston Red Sox baseball team. My dad hates the Red Sox, so he thinks I’m crazy for liking them just because of Jacoby.

#2) Andy Roddick - Andy Roddick is one of the top American tennis players in the world. The former #1 in the world won the U.S. Open in 2003, but has struggled to win a Grand Slam tournament since.

#1) Cristiano Ronaldo - Cristiano Ronaldo is a dreamy Portuguese soccer star who plays for Manchester United and the Portuguese national team. He is so hot that I’ve taken an unhealthy interest in soccer.

Who says famous people don’t shop at Walmart? With the economy in a mess and people needing to save money, even Dallas Cowboys quaterback Tony Romo and his girlfriend Jessica “I’m not Lisa” Simpson were snapped by the paparazzi shopping at a los Angeles Walmart store. Isn’t it funny how celebrities look so “normal” outside their glittery and glitzy celebrity settings?

Like seeing Tony Romo without his trademark shoulder pads and that black mascara under his eyes when he’s suited up to throw a football game for the Cowboys, it’s strange to see him in public in a pair of cargo shorts and an old t-shirt (although he is pretty hot dressed down like this). Jessica, now she’s another story. Fashion disaster written all over the girl. Please, Tony Romo, get yourself a real woman and not some little girl toy who looks like she could be your illegitimate teenage daughter.

Naomi Campbell Arrested for Assaulting Police Officer

British fashion model, Naomi Campbell was arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 for allegedly spitting at a police officer. Long known for her tantrums, Campbell has a history of getting physical with assistants and employees, and has even had to attend an anger management program. This time, it looks like she’s gone one step too far and got physical with the wrong people.

From an article in the Herald Sun :

In 2000, Campbell pleaded guilty in Toronto to an assault charge for beating an assistant while making a film in Canada in 1998. Under an agreement with prosecutors, Campbell expressed remorse and was released without punishment or a criminal record.

In January 2007, Campbell pleaded guilty to misdemeanour assault for throwing her mobile phone at her maid in a dispute over a missing pair of jeans.

From Access Hollywood :

Passengers claimed the 37-year-old supermodel was aggressive, rude and abusive to flight staff during the incident, which occurred around 4:30 PM local time, the UK’s Press Association reported.

Cambell was cuffed while on the plane, witnesses said. The flight had not taken off from Terminal 5.

Additionally, the Press Association reported there may have been some trouble with Campbell’s luggage.

I think Naomi Campbell needs to get her act together and stop throwing temper tantrums. Unfortunately, this one might land her in jail.
