ANTLER DOG BONE CHEW 2 YEAR UPDATE

Brodie is now 2 years old, he is even less of a chewer which has demoted him significantly as our antler dog chew mascot!!! He prefers to join dad in the shop when he is cutting up antler dog chews and "helps" by licking up as much of the antler dust off the floor as possible. (We sell the antler dust too, but NOT off the floor! Check out our Antler Sprinkles)

Brodie still has his elk antler "pipe" and may chew on it for a minute or two, again he licks it more than anything!

Oh and when I say he is not an aggressive chewer, that does not apply to "Football Sunday" or his other soft toys.

"Football Sunday" (yes that is the name of his football, the now 2 pieces of leather scraps) was a wonderful toy, many hours spent outside playing ball and even inside during the games. He knew it by name and would go find it in the yard when asked. He may not aggressively chew antlers, but he sure took Football Sunday for a whirlwind adventure.

HERE IS THE ORIGINAL FULL STORY: The Brodie & Antler Puppy Story

We have had our Blue Heeler rescue puppy, Brodie, for 2 months now and have discovered his preferences for our All Natural Antler Dog Bones.

When we brought him home at 8 weeks, I took him to our small sized bin of antler chews and he choose one for himself. He preferred split antlers, although I didn't feel they were safe as split antlers are not as structurally strong and I worried he could break a piece off. As it turns out he is not an aggressive chewer even as a puppy, combined with the fact that his attention span doesn't last more than a minute with the antler at this age! It was perfect in that he had full access to the marrow right away. It is still in his bucket of toys he can pull out to entertain himself, I do not worry about it now.

At 12 weeks I thought he could use a larger antler, so I took him to the medium sized antler dog bone chews. He chose a very thick elk antler. I think again because the marrow is more accessible and his attention span is now only about 2-3 minutes with the antler bone. (I don't believe this is the case with other pups, I think it's his personality.) He would still love this bone and it would have been size appropriate for months, but we lost it on a road trip to Kansas. FYI - Antlers are GREAT for traveling as they do not have a foul smell when being chewed as other dog treats, especially in confined spaces, and especially traveling with motion sickness prone folks like myself sensitive to odors!

As puppies do, he would fall asleep at any moment, including antler bone time!

He is 4 1/2 months now and we took another trip to our antler bins to replace the lost one. He choose a large antler bone this time just for fun. Not surprisingly he again chose an elk antler with the marrow exposed a bit more than others. (REMEMBER he is NOT an aggressive chewer! I recommend deer base end antlers for very aggressive chewers as they are more dense! He also chews on deer, just prefers elk when given a choice.) He likes to carry this one all over the house and yard, toss it around or lick it more than actually chewing on it. I even caught him rolling around upside down on top of it. Possibly due to a bit unique shape and heaviness compared to his size. Regardless, it is a great toy, chewed on when he is in the mood, safe enough I do not feel the need to constantly monitor him, and quite entertaining for us to watch. If we don't loose this one traveling it will be great to see how long it lasts!!!

We do NOT offer brown "fresh" antlers from hunted/killed deer or farm raised animals.

Our dog bones are naturally shed antlers, gathered in the forest or on ranch lands at various times of the year around Colorado, Utah & New Mexico, they are all weathered at different stages. The slight weathering may lead to discoloration or outer hairline cracking. We will NOT package antlers that are rotted, have cracks penetrating the center of the bone, or we believe would be a hazard to any pet. Older dogs, mild chewers, or dogs who only get them for short periods of time do not need to be concerned as much for the weathered effects, in fact it allows these dogs to get the mineral benefit much easier. He likes to carry this one all over the house and yard, toss it around or lick it more than actually chewing on it. I even caught him rolling around upside down on top of it. Possibly due to a bit unique shape and heaviness compared to his size. Regardless, it is a great toy, chewed on when he is in the mood, safe enough I do not feel the need to constantly monitor him, and quite entertaining for us to watch. If we don't loose this one traveling it will be great to see how long it lasts!!!

The Peak Antler Company’s Antler Dog Chew products were started by the family dog Aussie, an Australian Shepard/Dingo mix rescue from a shelter. Our main work involves Antler Chandeliers, Antler Lamps and Antler Furniture using all types of Elk, Moose, Fallow Deer, White Tail Deer and Mule Deer. Aussie would sneak into the shop and steal good antlers out of the pile. She would run off into the yard, chew on them for hours and bury them to save for later. She wouldn’t give them back even when I caught her stealing “red-pawed”. We came home one day to find she had discovered the antlers in the coffee table as well, that wasn’t so cute. It became obvious she loved antler more than any other bone or puppy chews we gave her. I cut up a few pieces of scrap antler for her in hopes of preventing more theft and save our furniture. It worked! Everyone was happy and the furniture was saved! Soon after, a friend with an adorably large black Labrador retriever puppy who also discovered antler accent furniture in their home told us their story. We shared a scrap piece of antler which again successfully saved their antler furniture and entertained the puppy for hours. They began asking for more antler pieces for their friends dogs and the news spread fast. It grew organically into a business by demand, just the way nature intended!

Homemade Antler Sprinkles Dog Treats

Basic Rolled Antler Sprinkles Cookie Recipe:

Ingredients:

- 1 ¾ C. whole wheat flour
- ¼ C. Antler Sprinkles
- 2 (4 oz.) jars of pureed baby food - beef, blueberry, sweet potato, chicken, etc. *Make sure baby food does not have traces of onions, raisins, grapes or artificial preservatives.
- 1-2 T. water if needed
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350°. In large bowl, mix ingredients together thoroughly.
- Drop dough on lightly floured surface and knead.
- Roll out dough to 1/4" thick and cut into desired shapes.
- Bake on greased baking sheet about 1/2" apart for 20-25 minutes.
- Cool and store in paper bag. (Storing in an air-tight container will make them soft, but still edible.)

I used sweet potato baby food hoping for an orange color, but no luck.

We put our Antler Sprinkles in a jar for convenience.

The dough rolled out rather nicely to about 10" x 16" to start.

We had fun with dog bone, pumpkin & leaf cookie cutters for the season.

Ready for the oven!

20 minutes @ 350 degrees was perfect.

Of course my helper decided to take a 20 minute puppy nap while they cooked.

Done! A few of the larger cookies puffed up with an air bubble in the middle, but held together fine so no worries.

Enough scraps for round 2

Yield 3 large pumpkins, 6 dog bones and 15 smaller leaves & pumpkins.
I had ambitions of decorating the pumpkins with white chocolate, maybe next time.

Brodie awakes to my rescue to try some out! Sadly no photos, it would be a two person job. He followed house rules and quickly took his treat outside to enjoy before I could take a picture.

Our Story - Aussie

ThePeak Antler Company's All Natural Antler Dog Bone products were started by the family dog Aussie, an Australian Shepard/Dingo mix rescue from a shelter.

Aussie sharing her bones with neighbor friend Gunny

Our main work involves Antler Chandeliers, Antler Lamps and Antler Furniture using all types of Elk, Moose, Fallow Deer, White Tail Deer and Mule Deer. Aussie would sneak into the shop and steal good antlers out of the pile. She would run off into the yard, chew on them for hours and bury them to save for later. She wouldn't give them back even when I caught her stealing "red-pawed".

We came home one day to find she had discovered the antlers in the coffee table as well, that wasn't so cute. It became obvious she loved antler more than any other bone or puppy chews we gave her. I cut up a few pieces of scrap antler for her in hopes of preventing more theft and save our furniture. It worked! Everyone was happy and the furniture was saved! Soon after, a friend with an adorably large black Labrador retriever puppy who also discovered antler accent furniture in their home told us their story. We shared a scrap piece of antler which again successfully saved their antler furniture and entertained the puppy for hours. They began asking for more antler pieces for their friends dogs and the news spread fast. It grew organically into a business by demand, just the way nature intended!

Our dog bones are naturally shed antlers, gathered in the forest or on ranch lands at various times of the year around Colorado, Utah & New Mexico, they are all weathered at different stages. The slight weathering may lead to discoloration or outer hairline cracking. We will NOT package antlers that are rotted, have cracks penetrating the center of the bone, or we believe would be a hazard to any pet. Older dogs, mild chewers, or dogs who only get them for short periods of time do not need to be concerned as much for the weathered effects, in fact it allows these dogs to get the mineral benefit much easier. Flyball is a relay race for teams of dogs (speed counts!) - no couch potatoes this sport. They travel to different states in order to compete, and last weekend broke their team record. check it out here!
