Nato pulls out of Afghan ministeries after Kabul attack news

Nato said an “individual” had turned his gun on the officers , believe to be a colonel and major, and had not yet been identified or caught.

Nato commander Gen John Allen condemned the attack as cowardly.

The interior ministry was put in lock down after the shootings. The BBC’s orla Guerin in Kabul says 8 shots were reported inside the building which should be one of the safest in the capital and that any Afghan who carried out the attack would have had the highest clearness.

The attack comes as more people died in a fifth day of violent mass protests over controversy. One person was shot dead and two were also wounded in a shooting that took place in Logar province.

South of Kabul after violent clashes between hundreds of protesters were shot dead 50 wounded when demonstrators tried to overrun a UN compound.

Nelson Mandela in hospital for stomach ailment

Mr Mandela was treated for a long standing abdominal complaint and is expected to be released from hospital by Monday, a government statement said.

His health has declined in recent years and he rarely appears in public. As the country’s first black president after a history of white minority rule, the BBC’s Abdrew Harding in Johannesbug says Mr Mandela occupies a special place in the hearts of South Africans.

The government requested that the former political turned anti-apartheid crusader be given privacy with his family. Mandela last appeared in public two years ago, during the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa.

In his earlier life, he was jailed for 27 years for a conviction for sabotage against the government. Upon release, he went on to become the leader of the struggle against racist apartheid rule in SA. Culminating in his being elected president in 1994. He served one term and left public life in 1999.

New York Mayor Michael Bloom berg said the threat was “uncorroborated”, but security would be boosted at bridges, tunnels and on public transport. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said spot checks in the New York subway would be more frequent in coming days.

President Barack Obama called on the US tp “redouble” anti terror efforts.

Vehicle Bomb

The authorities say intelligence gathered in Pakistan points to possible car or truck bomb attacks at strategic points in New York or Washington. US TV network ABC News reports that three individuals one a US citizen entered the US in August aiming to carry out a terror attack. It was unclear whether this information was linked to the threat detailed by US officials.

This more specific information comes from the same CIA informant who said three people were dispatched by al Qaeda to carry out a bomb plot in either New York or Washington, and has allowed the intelligence man hunters to narrow down dramatically the pool of names that could match the partial descriptions the informant provided.

Twin Tower

The intelligence from the informant, who is considered reliable by the CIA, led to the national state of high alert over the possible terror strike on the anniversary of 9/11, but the informant’s information itself may be secondhand, ABC News has learned.

“Al Qaeda again is seeking to harm Americans and in particular to target New York and Washington, “Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Friday in New York. “We are taking this threat seriously. Federal, state and local authorities are taking all steps to address it.”

Early Thursday, at the White House, the president and the vice president received the first of several briefings on the threat. Around 7 p.m. Thursday, as the president arrived to address Congress, the FBI and the CIA were in high gear.

Indian Prime Minister Visits in Bangladesh

Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Indian prime minister arrived in Bangladesh today on a visit considered to be historical for both countries.

During the visit, both Indian and Bangladesh are expected to sign key border and trade agreements. The two day trip is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Bangladesh in 12 years. Singh and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are working to reach agreement on their disputed 2545 mile (4096 KM) border, explore cooperation in the power sector and enhance trade .

Indian and Bangladesh are expected to sign several treaties conserving long outstanding issues, the most important of them being the long pending extradition treaty, which is expected to enable legal hand over of United Libration Front of Asom (ULFA) general secretary Anup Chetia to the Indian authorities. The new treaty would also would help in the extradition of ULFA’s hardliner commander in chief Paresh Barua if he ventures to enter Bangladesh territory , apart from other criminals and insurgent hiding in Bangladesh.

Mamata Banerjee is reported to have felt that Indian had agreed to supply too much water to Bangladesh. As per reports, there was difference between the initial draft of the agreement and the final version. The West Bengal govt. had agreed on sharing of up to 25000 cusecs. But the final version talks of sharing 33,000-50,000 cusecs, which the Bengal Govt. believe would be off adverse affect to the state. As such, an agreement on sharing the Teesta river waters appears unlikely during the visit.

It is also expected that India would reach an agreement to use Bangladesh’s road and rail ways to foster communication to the land locked north eastern region. In return, Bangladesh would be given right of passage across India to trade with neighborhood Nepal and Bhutan. Mentionable that India has already announced a huge loan of around 1 billion to Bangladesh to improve the neighbor’s transport infrastructure.

Indian helped Bangladesh secede from Pakistan in a 1971 war. However, relations soured after a 1975 military coup in Bangladesh when independence leader Sheik Mujibur Rahman, Hasina’s father, was assassinated and a new government took over.

The chief ministers of four Indian states bordering Bangladesh are accompanying Singh but Mamata Banerjee, the newly elected chief minister of West Bengal, canceled her trip over reported disputes with the central government over the water sharing plan.
