The (formerly) Blond Bomber returned in 2009 with Relapse, his first album in nearly five years, but if he was rusty, it certainly didn’t show. Eminem sold a million-plus, put the entire industry on blast, feuded with his fellow MCs and reestablished himself as one of the biggest names in the game. It was just like old times. Along the way, he also managed to stir up a whole kettle of controversy, get mauled by a fictional German TV personality and make a cameo in a Judd Apatow flick. All of which made 2009 a very big year for Mr. Mathers.

2009 Highlights: Well, for starters, there was Relapse, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart in May, with sales of more than 608,000 copies, the year’s biggest bow (until Susan Boyle dethroned him in December). But in the months leading up to the album, Em hyped it with big-name collaborations (”Crack a Bottle,” which featured his old running mates 50 Cent and Dr. Dre) and videos that saw him revisiting his trash-talking ways (the now-infamous “We Made You” video, which slammed the likes of Jessica Simpson, Sarah Palin and a whole lot of other folks).

That, of course, of course, was followed by a public spat with Mariah Carey and her husband Nick Cannon. (He paid for his transgressions by being symbolically run over by a bus in Carey’s “Obsessed” video.) He then met the wrong end of Brüno at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, in an incident he would later refer to as a “gag.”

There were the controversies, too. “We Made You” got Bill O’Reilly all hot and bothered, and as the year drew to a close, Em was getting heat for perceived anti-gay lyrics in a new song, “Elevator,” which took aim at the likes of Adam Lambert and Clay Aiken.

But 2009 will be remembered as the year Eminem returned to prominence. Relapse was a smash, and songs like the gory “3 a.m.” and the somber “Beautiful” earned him critical acclaim. His verse on Drake’s “Forever” arguably outshined the likes of Kanye West and Lil Wayne. He was nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards, second only to Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, and won Best Hip-Hop Video. And as ‘09 drew to a close, he was touting a re-issue of Relapse. He capped things off by being named the best-selling artist of the decade by Nielsen SoundScan, having sold more than 32 million albums in the ’00s.

He also joined Jay-Z for a surprise performance at the party announcing their “DJ Hero” game. … Was lightheartedly accused of cheating at Pac-Man by Fif. … Channeled Rain Man in the “We Made You” video. … Inducted heroes Run-DMC into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. … Promised to reunite D12 for a new album. … And made a cameo in Judd Apatow’s “Funny People.”

Two Confirmed Tracks On "Relapse Refill", Relape 2 Pushed Back for 2010

Two already released tracks have been confirmed for Eminem's Relapse: Refill.
"Forever" with Drake, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West and "Taking My Ball" (from the DJ Hero: Renegade Edition CD) will be featured on the re-release, as well as five new Eminem tracks.

Also, Eminem's highly anticipated new album, Relapse 2, has been pushed back to a 2010 release date because of the Relapse: Refill releasing on December 21.

"I want to deliver more material for the fans this year like I originally planned, Hopefully these tracks on The Refill will tide the fans over until we put out Relapse 2 next year."

Eminem is said to be re-releasing his most recent album Relapse. Included in the re-release of the original songs will be 7 brand new, never before heard tracks. There is no definite news about what that means for the Relapse 2 (if it is even coming out that is) as of now, but it will be posted after more information develops.

Freeway To Release Eminem Tribute Mixtape

State Property's own Freeway has announced plans to release a new mixtape called Freelapse, which he says will pay homage and tribute to Eminem and his recent Relapse album. According to Freeway, the motivation to make the project came from a freestyle by Slim Shady himself, he explained in a recent interview.

"Im dropping the Freelapse, its a tribute to Eminem using all of his beats. What happened was Em did a freestyle and he was like 'I disappeared I was hiding in Freeway's beard,' so I sampled that, made it a hook, and used it for a song. After that, I came up with the idea. Eminem is a talented emcee, he's got a lot of hot beats, and another artist would probably be scared to rap to his beat because he's murdered every beat. So I felt that it was a challenge for me to try and live up to the expectation."

Mr. Porter and Just Blaze Talk About Relapse 2

In an exclusive interview with AllHipHop.com, the heavyweight producers Denaun Porter (Mr. Porter) and Just Blaze detailed how their production relationship with Eminem has grown since their work on the superstar’s debut album, Infinite.

“Man, now? It’s so much more fun. It was easy for us to go back to that time,” Porter told. “This will be the first time I’m producing songs for Em under me without D12 [since Infinite]. That’s big for me. I can’t let the cat out the bag yet, but one of the songs is told as if we were back in the day.”

While many fans argue rapper’s earlier work are usually stronger because they are hungry for success, Mr. Porter feels Eminem’s quality has improved with his superstardom.

“It’s no fun when you’re broke,” he stated. “We were trying to do Infinite like we had more money when we didn’t have any. We were trying to get to a certain point, but now he’s got it. The reason he’s good is not because being white worked to his advantage. It did a little at first, but all day everyday the kid is writing. I don’t know if Jay-Z is writing all day. He owns multi-million dollar businesses. Em writes all day. Jay probably comes up with lines [and] that make him one of the greatest. I’m fighting, because Just Blaze came in and kicked ass.”

After leaking Jay Electronica’s “Exhibit C” and a Nas snippet last week, Just Blaze has renewed attention on what other tracks he has in the vaults, and what he’s developed for Relapse 2.

Due to their protective natures, Blaze revealed that his time with Eminem has been challenging despite their creative highs.

“It’s a challenge for both of us in the sense we’ve never worked with each other before. We’ve both been in the business 10 plus years,” Just Blaze explains. “We’re both very self-contained. He has his own production compound, and I have my situation with Bassline Studios in New York. Sometimes I’m like I need this [song] back in New York and he’s like I need it back in Detroit. It’s interesting because we’re both protective of the work and not wanting it to leak out. I’m in the same boat, because we both would lose money. Creatively it’s a good process. When it goes beyond a business arrangement, it always works out. I’ve had cases where people just want a beat because you’re Just Blaze. But here we are 2 people that are fans of each other’s work.”

50 said that just because he's got a song with a crooning chorus doesn't mean he's abandoned a street edge for his upcoming Before I Self Destruct LP.

"Not particularly his song, but the entire project... I meant for it to be a little harder and what I fell in love with about hip-hop and within hip-hop," Fif said on the song's video set Saturday. "I accomplished it. Before I Self Destruct is absolutely harder than Get Rich or Die Tryin' or other projects in between. The Massacre had some real aggressive content on it, but there were other things I wanted to do, like 'Ryder Music', 'Baltimore Love Thing', 'Build You Up', featuring Jamie Foxx. This project [Before I Self Destruct], I kept all of those things out of it. I just made it what I wanted it to be. This album is my album right now. It's like the prequel to Get Rich- the things I missed on that project."
