Like many of you. Mary Jo and I have been watching the horrific pictures coming out of Moore, Oklahoma since this afternoon. Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones. Life is such a precious gift. A single moment in time can change our lives forever. Give thanks and cherish every moment.

Prayers requested: Newly ordained priest battling cancer

Father Scott Carroll, a seminarian from the Diocese of Toledo was ordained to Priesthood at his home yesterday. The new priest is suffering from cancer and early ordination was deemed "prudent". Father Scott is a classmate of Louisville's Deacon Nick Brown at Saint Meinrad. When Father Scott was a seminarian, he was assigned to Holy Family parish in New Albany, IN. Father Scott is 46 years old.

On Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 6 weeks before his scheduled ordination, Bishop Leonard Blair ordained Deacon Scott Carroll to the priesthood at a Mass celebrated at Father Carroll’s home in Maumee, Ohio. Father Scott has been battling cancer for some time. Although Scott looked forward to joining his classmates for ordination on June 22, 2013, it became clear this week that an earlier ordination might be prudent.

Concelebrating the Ritual Mass of Ordination were the Reverends Keith Stripe and Kishore Kottana, Pastor and Associate Pastor respectively of Father Carroll’s home parish of Saint Joseph, and the Reverend Monsignor Charles Singler, Vocations Director for the Diocese of Toledo.

Father Carroll’s family were present for the concelebrated Mass.

At the end of the Mass, Bishop Blair announced to those gathered that Father Carroll is assigned Associate Pastor of his home parish, Saint Joseph Parish in Maumee.
He will exercise his faculties as a priest as his health permits. It was a beautiful occasion and Scott is very much at peace.

1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.

1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.

If you could change one thing about your Mom, what would it be?

1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that.
2. I'd make my Mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it and not me.

The Parish Office is closed on Friday, May 3rd, and will re-open as usual on Monday.

There is no 5:00 PM Saturday evening Mass at either All Saints or St. Francis Xavier this weekend because of the Derby.

We will celebrate First Communion on Sunday, May 5th - please continue to pray for our candidates Abby Alvey, Jaidyn Brody and Lauren Campbell. After Mass, we are combining our Monthly Potluck Brunch with a reception to honor them - please bring your favorite dish (and maybe some extras since we'll have some guests here...) and join in the celebration. If you can help set-up, serve, or clean-up, please contact me.

We ask that you remember in your prayers the family of Ann Bell, paternal grandmother of parishioners Stacy Bell and Melissa Pund, who passed away Monday, April 29th. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Please remember, too, the family of Dawson Eckler, a long-time member of First Christian Church of Taylorsville and often present at our Covenant Churches activities. He passed away this morning, and a memorial service for him will be at 11:00 on Saturday at his church, with visitation from 9-11, also at First Christian.

May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace.

Our neighbors at Taylorsville Elementary invite you to attend their Spring Fling, an annual fundraiser, from 5-8:00 today, Friday, April 26th, which will include food, games, lots of fun and a live auction.

The All Saints Relay for Life team encourages you to attend the Bunco/Silent Auction event on Saturday, April 27th (tomorrow) from 6-10:00 PM . Tickets are $10, include dinner, and can be purchased at the door. There will be a chili cook-off, door prizes, refreshments/snacks/dessert - they promise you will have a good time and look forward to seeing you. Your support would be appreciated.

We ask that you keep in your prayers Adam Carrico, who will be ordained a Deacon tomorrow at his home parish, St. Aloysius, 212 Mt. Mercy Drive, Pewee Valley, at 11:00 AM. All are welcome to attend this joyful celebration - Adam has been involved in Faith Formation, Religious Education, and Youth Ministry in both of our parishes.

A "poor" funny

One day, a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"

"It was great, Dad."

"Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked.

"Oh yeah," said the son.

"So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father.

The son answered, "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden, and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden, and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard, and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on, and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them."

The boy's father was speechless.

Then his son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are."

ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING

Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"

He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?" Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.' I choose to be in a good mood.

Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life."

"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.

"Yes it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life." I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local trauma center.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body. I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?"

I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. "The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live.

"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked. Jerry continued, "The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, 'He's a dead man." I knew I needed to take action."

"What did you do?" I asked.

"Well, there was a big, burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Jerry. "She asked if I was allergic to anything. 'Yes,' I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Bullets!' Over their laughter, I told them, 'I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."

Jerry lived thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything.

A Kids Funny

Kids talk about astronomy:

~ When people run around and around in circles we say they are crazy. When planets do it we say they are orbiting.

~ Most books now say our sun is a star. But it still knows how to change back into a sun in the daytime.

Kids talk about Meteorology:

~ You can listen to thunder after lightening and tell how close you came to getting hit. If you don't hear it you got hit, so never mind.

~ I am not sure how clouds get formed. But the clouds know how to do it, and that is the important thing.

You are encouraged to support our parish youth by attending their Jammin' in Jamaica fundraiser on Sunday, April 14th, after Mass. It will have something for everyone - food, games and a Silent Auction. All proceeds go to help our brothers and sisters in the second-poorest country in our hemisphere. Contact Laura Zoeller lauramzoeller@bellsouth.net if you have any questions - or contact one of our youth.

We ask that you pray for our parishioner Anna Hochstrasser, who is recovering from surgery. She is recuperating at Jefferson Place, 1705 Herr Lane-Room 203, Louisville, KY 40222. Anna may not yet be up to having visitors, but we think she would appreciate a card or note. Mary Jo Mattingly and her husband Deacon Gerry are at Vanderbilt University beginning her stem-cell transplant treatment and would appreciate your prayers and support. Please also pray for our other home-bound parishioners: Don Bealmear, Mary Hodges, and Nina Schultz.

The local food pantry also provides personal hygiene items, as well as laundry and cleaning supplies. We understand that they are running very low on these items and are well-stocked at this time with food. If you could donate some bath soap, deoderant, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes, laundry detergent, paper products, etc., they would appreciate it - drop off in the baskets outside the parish offices.

The doctors, nurses and staff at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center are doing great things to cure people of all kinds of cancers, and develop treatment strategies that do not have such a devastating effect on cancer patients lives that chemotherapy does.
