The Syfy channel likes its weirdness in neat little packages. In "Eureka," beginning its fourth season today, a U.S. marshal and his daughter (Colin Ferguson and Jordan Hinson) are stranded, then take up residence, in a strange town in the Northwest. It turns out to be a settlement for scientists conducting out-there research that goes awry far more often than it goes right. In "Warehouse 13," which began its second season Tuesday, two FBI agents (Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly) are assigned to a top-secret storage facility in South Dakota that holds the world's collection of strange, supernatural, goofy and dangerous artifacts. Armed with purple "neutralizer" goo, they travel the world to track down problematic pieces and contain them.
Eureka returns tonight at 9pm ET followed by the premiere of Haven. Will Did you watch?
I’ve noticed that Syfy shows that aren’t at least loosely based on some other series franchise don’t seem to generate nearly as much noise on the Internet. Is it possible that even though its airing on a summer Friday that Haven will spur more viewing and yet less Internet discussion than either Caprica or Stargate Universe? Stay tuned.

The clue that LeBron James didn’t have one came twenty-something minutes into what promises to go down as the most over-hyped and over-produced hour in sports television history:

That’s when he called his experience with free agency “real humbling.”Another 30 minutes of so would pass before “The Decision’s” first authentic moment. It came as Michael Wilbon asked James for reaction to the sight of his erstwhile fans in Cleveland now burning his jersey.

He wore an unmistakable expression of shock. You could see it finally dawn on him, this new reality. A media event born of the power struggle between CAA and Endeavor/William Morris had quickly devolved into one of those old-school wrestling interviews. Apparently, the possibility of jersey-burning hadn’t been addressed in any of the memos. In their zeal to hatch the perfect plan, the King’s minions had underestimated the backlash. Without even having to dye his hair, LeBron James had suddenly become the biggest heel in American sports.

“I can’t get involved in that,” he said. “This is a business.”

Cliff Lee has been traded around enough at this point for the Mariners to know if they were properly compensated for his services.
Unfortunately for the last two clubs to trade for the former Cy Young winner, the haul of young players they got in return has yet to make a major impact in either case. While those previous deals of course cannot be judged as failures, especially for the Phillies, it looks like Seattle may have finally gotten it right with the Rangers.

With a package centered around highly touted young first baseman Justin Smoak, Seattle got the big league-ready impact player that was lacking in the last two deals. And the supporting cast of young players also involved in the deal could pay off for Seattle as well. Everybody thought earlier today that Cliff Lee would be on his way out of Seattle. They were right. Instead of heading to the visitor’s clubhouse in Seattle to join the New York Yankees, however, he joins the division rival Texas Rangers, along with RP Mark Lowe. Coming back to Seattle will be Justin Smoak and three others according to this Joel Sherman tweet. This deal has also been confirmed by Ken Rosenthal, who adds that the Mariners will be sending cash to the Rangers to help cover the $4M that Lee is owed over the rest of the season.

Earlier today, some thought that Jesus Montero was a solid haul for Lee, along with the rest of the package. In that case, the return of Justin Smoak has to be seen as an absolute steal. Smoak had an .885 OPS between three different leagues in 2009. Smoak then posted a 1.010 OPS in 15 games with AAA Oklahoma City before receiving a call-up to the big leagues. His power hasn’t really materialized at the big league level (.145 ISO), but a 13.8% walk rate in 275 PAs is incredibly encouraging, and his .238 BABIP is bound to see a boost.The end of a day like few others in Mariners history turned out like too many others this season -- with a meager output of offense in a 6-1 loss to the New York Yankees. Any wonder the Mariners were yearning for an impact hitter as they shopped Cliff Lee. The hope is that Justin Smoak can become what general manager Jack Zduriencik described during today's news conference. "If this guy is what we think he is," Zduriencik said, "he's going to be a cornerstone as we move forward."

On 25 January 2009, in Mexico City, Mexico, Philadelphia of Kraft Foods Mexico was recognized by Guinness World Records™ as the creator of the largest cheesecake ever made. The colossal confectionery weighed 2,133.5 kg (4,703 lb), had a diameter of 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) and was 56 cm (1 ft 10 in) tall. The recipe for the world’s largest cheesecake included 800 kg (1,764 lb) of Philadelphia cream cheese, 800 kg of yogurt, 350 kg (772 lb) of cookies, 250 kg (551 lb) of sugar, 150 kg (331 lb) of butter and 100 kg (220 lb) of strawberries, along with other ingredients.

Oasis of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship in the fleet of Royal Caribbean International. The first of her class, she is expected to be joined by her sister ship Allure of the Seas in December 2010. Both vessels are expected to cruise the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She set a new record of carrying over 6,000 passengers. Oasis of the Seas offers passengers features such as two-story loft suites and luxury suites measuring 1,600 sq ft (150 m2) with balconies overlooking the sea or promenades. The ship features a zip-line, a casino, a mini-golf course, multiple night clubs, several bars and lounges, a karaoke club, comedy club, four swimming pools, volleyball and basketball courts, theme parks and nurseries for children.

Oakland Reacts to Verdict in Oscar Grant Murder Trial

OAKLAND-- Crowds gathering in downtown Oakland to protest the Oscar Grant murder trial verdict are expressing anger at a justice system they say continues to fail communities of color.

One group involved in the protest is the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action By Any Means Necessary, and a post-verdict email from them outlines what they're calling on Oaklanders to demand, including "The maximum sentence for killer cop Johannes Mehserle", jail for Officers Pirone and Domenici, and "massive funding to Oakland for education and jobs for Oakland's black, Latina/o, Asian, and poor and working-class white youth."

Reginald James, a teacher at the Oakland Freedom School, said of the scene after the verdict, "It's a media circus -- they're trying to capitalize off others' pain. See someone crying, go take their photo." He said when the verdict came down, "People were paralyzed. Some people didn't know what to expect, some were surprised, for some people it kinda confirmed what's already been implied in the mainstream press. I cant even get a sandwich downtown right now because people expected acquittal or involuntary manslaughter, which would lead people to revert to property damage or violence."

Youth Radio videographer Haldun Morgan was at Oakland City Center after the verdict was announced. He said a police line was being set up on 11th Street between Clay and Broadway, and there were also fire trucks, police SUVs, and six or seven unmarked police cars. Morgan overheard a conversation between two men, one saying the killing was parallel to a lynching. Morgan saw several people passing out "Violence is Not Justice" flyers. He also witnessed an incident in which a young woman was hit by a police car.

"The police pulled up with a van and unmarked car while a bus was being surrounded," reported Morgan. "The police started to back up and hit a woman who was in the streets. Someone said she recently found out she was deaf. The woman was on the ground and a group of activists came to her aid. People started to surround the police car, and some folks were throwing bottles and kicking the police cars. Riot police showed up and a group of activists went and confronted the police. A young man on the megaphone was asking if they could take a police report, and a young woman who was recording was trying to ask if they could go help the lady who had been hit. There was no response from the police and then the woman confronting the police called 911 anf tried to make a report." Another witness told Youth Radio that the victim's ankle was grazed and that friends helped her leave the scene.

Mayor Ron Dellums emphasized the attention that the case has drawn. "The tragic reality... is that this is not the first young African American male that's lost his life in this kind of tragedy....Many people have died here and around the country, but they end up being... a statistic in a newspaper." He said what's different in this case is that modern technology helped to document and transmit the incident to mass audiences.

BART Verdict: Mehserle Guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter
LOS ANGELES (KPIX) A jury has convicted a former Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of an unarmed man on an Oakland train platform.
Johannes Mehserle was found guilty on Thursday afternoon in the New Year's Day 2009 killing of 22-year-old Oscar Grant III.

Involuntary manslaughter typically carries a sentence of two to four years. Sentencing was set for Aug. 6.

Mehserle was placed in handcuffs and taken away after the verdict. He turned to his family and mouthed, "I love you, guys." His parents wept when the verdict was read.

Grant's mother, Wanda Johnson, stared at the jurors and appeared upset.

One female juror wiped tears with a tissue when the panel was polled on its decision.

At least five bystanders had videotaped the shooting incident - one of the most racially polarizing cases in California since four Los Angeles officers were acquitted in 1992 in the beating of Rodney King. Mehserle is white, Grant was black.

Prosecutors said the 28-year-old Mehserle became angry at Grant for resisting arrest. Mehserle claimed he mistakenly drew his handgun instead of his Taser stun gun.

The trial was moved to Los Angeles from Oakland due to racial tensions and extensive media coverage.

The jury consisting of eight women and four men, none of them black, only deliberated for six hours over two days before delivering their decision. The jury had a choice between second-degree murder and lesser charges of voluntary and involuntary manslaughter.

The verdict followed a three-week trial in which prosecutors played the videos taken by bystanders, and witnesses recounted hearing the frightening gunshot that killed Grant.

The case was a rare instance in which a police officer stood trial for an on-duty killing.

Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley indicated that she was "disappointed and frustrated," because "this was not the verdict we sought."

"This case is a tragedy in every respect, and Oscar Grant should never have been killed at the hands of a sworn officer," she added.

John Burris, an attorney and spokesman for Grant's family, said outside the L.A. courthouse that the family was also "extremely disappointed" in the involuntary manslaughter verdict, adding it "is not a true representation of what happened."

Burris contended that Mehserle should have been convicted of murder, saying it was like Mehserle "ran a light instead of killing someone."

Grant's family has filed multimillion dollar lawsuits against BART. Only the mother of Grant's daughter has reached a settlement.

In Oakland, at the "Behind the Scenes" salon at 17th and Broadway, hairdressers along with patrons gasped out loud when the verdict was read.

"It's just outraging that they would attempt to appease the public instead of deliberating a real verdict," said Wayne Shelley, a stylist.

A crowd of people gathered near Oakland City Hall let out a chorus of moans and profanity when they heard the verdict.

Many in the loose group of about 100 people believed the verdict of involuntary manslaughter was too light. About a dozen people formed in a semi-circle to pray, and others appeared stunned and hugged one another.

"It's not real, it's not real. Where's the justice? He was killed in cold blood," said Amber Royal, 23, of Oakland.

Police in Oakland expected protests after the verdict and officers in riot gear were visible on the streets as about 400 people marched through downtown around 5:30 p.m. BART trains were packed with people are leaving the city.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issued a statement urging Californians to remain calm and not resort to violence. He also informed Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums that the state was well prepared to assist in maintaining order.

Dellums encouraged the community to "express...grief in a healthy manner that will not endanger our safety, livelihood or reputation as a city."

"We are asking for the community to come together, look out for one another and stay safe," a statement issued by Dellums said. "We will not tolerate destruction or violence. We live here, and we love Oakland."

Most kids, if given the choice, would live out their young lives subsisting on nothing but chicken fingers. If those chicken fingers happened to come from Chili's, they might be pretty short lives. An active 8-year-old boy should eat about 1,600 calories a day. This single meal plows through 70 percent of that allotment. America, we have a problem.

Knowing firsthand the struggle with understanding what is good or bad since I was always the fat kid and then topping out over 500 pounds. I have analyzed kids' menu offerings at all the major chains, taken a hard look at packaged foods, and uncovered the truth about what this country is really feeding its children.

The bad news is that many of America's food industry titans are pumping kids' meals full of added sugars, dangerous fats, and empty calories. But, there's great news, too: Kid's meals tell us a lot about how adults will fare, as well. Read on for all the dietary disasters, and an equal number of drive-thru saviors, for everybody in the family.

20. Worst Breakfast Cereal: Cap'n Crunch (1 cup) 147 calories; 2 grams (g) fat (1 g saturated); 16 g sugar; 1 g fiber. Sweetened cereals are among the most dominant sources of empty calories in a child's diet. Aside from the added vitamins, which are mandated by the government, this cereal is an amalgam of largely worthless food particles and chemicals. Buyers beware: Most cereals marketed to kids suffer similar problems. Eat this instead: Cascadian Farm Clifford Crunch. (1 cup) 100 calories; 1 g fat (0 g saturated); 6 g sugar; 5 g fiber.

19. Worst Breakfast Pastry: Burger King Cini-minis with vanilla icing 500 calories; 21 g fat (6 g saturated, 5 g trans); 72 g carbohydrates. There is no worse way to start your day than with a combination of refined flour, sugar, and trans fats. What's more, studies show that overweight people who trade fast-digesting carbohydrates for more protein at breakfast have an easier time slimming down. Eat this instead: Burger King Egg & Cheese Croissan'wich 300 calories; 17 g fat (6 g saturated, 2 g trans); 26 g carbohydrates.

18. Worst Side Dish: Bob Evans Smiley Face Potatoes. 524 calories; 31 g fat (6 g saturated); 57 g carbohydrates; 646 mg sodium. Not even an extended bath in hot oil would wipe the grins from faces of these creepy-looking potatoes. When you're eating out, side dishes make or break a meal, and with more fat and calories than Bob's sirloin steak, this side falls woefully into the latter category. What begins as beef ends up with 42 ingredients, including partially hydrogenated oil. What's more, the sweet-potato casserole is topped off with marshmallow, brown sugar, and molasses. Eat this instead: Boston Market Kids' Roasted Turkey with Green Beans and Cornbread 210 calories; 6 g fat (2 g saturated); 568 mg sodium.

16. Worst Pasta Meal: Romano's Macaroni Grill Kid's Macaroni 'n' Cheese 600 calories; 31 g fat (20 g saturated); 1,720 mg sodium. This dish used to be more than double the size and caloric impact. The chain finally cut down the massive portion size. Thanks, Macaroni Grill. (P.S. It's still a disaster.) Eat this instead: Kid's Grilled Chicken & Broccoli 390 calories; 5 g fat (2 g saturated), 560 mg sodium.

14. Worst Prepared Lunch: Oscar Mayer Lunchables Maxed Out Turkey & Cheddar Cracker Combo 680 calories; 22 g fat (9 g saturated); 1,440 mg sodium. The maxed Out line is the worst of the lackluster Lunchables, with an ingredient list that looks like the index of a chemistry textbook. Oscar Mayer even manages to cram in 61 grams of sugar more than you'll find in four Reese's Peanut Butter Cups! Eat this instead: Hillshire Farm Deli Wraps Smokehouse Ham & Swiss Wrap Kit with dressing (1 serving) 260 calories; 11g fat (4 g saturated); 960 mg sodium.

13. Worst Fast Food Meal: Burger King Double Cheeseburger and Small French Fries 740 calories; 42 g fat (17 g saturated, 4.5 g trans); 1,410 mg sodium. Burger King's dubious double burger earns the distinction of being one of the fattiest meals for an on-the-go kid, with more than a day's worth of saturated fat for the average 8-year-old. To make matters worse, it's also loaded with trans fat and sodium. Eat this instead: Burger King Chicken Tenders Kid's Meal (4 piece) with Burger King Fresh Apple Fries 215 calories; 11 g fat (3 g saturated, 1.5 g trans); 440 mg sodium.

12. Worst Pizza: Cosi Kids Pepperoni Pizza 806 calories; 40 g fat; 94 g carbohydrates; 1,423 mg sodium. Before your child eats this doughy, oversized pizza, consider strapping two boxes of Mozzarella Bagel Bites to her stomach to see if she likes the added bulk, because that's how many calories she stands to absorb. You're better off ordering in even two slices of a 12-inch pepperoni pizza from Papa John's is only 440 calories. Eat this instead: Cosi Gooey Grilled Cheese Sandwich 269 calories; 15 g fat; 22 g carbohydrates; 314 mg sodium.

11. Worst Breakfast: Denny's Big Dipper French Toastix with Whipped Margarine and Maple Flavored Syrup 810 calories; 76 g fat (14 g saturated); 107 g carbohydrates. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and kids, after all, need energy to grow and play. But that doesn't mean you should let your children eat a breakfast twice in one setting. At this size, four French Toastix is three too many. Eat this instead: Denny's Smiley Alien Hotcakes with Sugar-Free Maple Flavored Syrup and Anti-Gravity Grapes 313 calories; 3 g fat (0.5 g saturated); 71 g carbohydrates.

10. Worst Frozen Supermarket Meal: DiGiorno for One Garlic Bread Crust Pepperoni Pizza 840 calories; 44 g fat (16 g saturated; 3.5 g trans); 1, 450 mg sodium. So many times we have no idea what is in our favorite kids food. I hope this sheds a little light on the subject. I have done much more research and will be writing more articles highlighting other restaurants kids meals.

This year’s Emmy Awards just might turn into one great big “Glee”-for-all.

The crazy, campy high school musical that had America singing its praises scored 19 Emmy nominations on Thursday, including bids for best comedy series and stars Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele, Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer. Consider it an emphatic testament to the power of Madonna — and melodic mash-ups. “Glee” led the charge of refreshing Emmy freshmen. Among the new shows making big breakthroughs were “Modern Family,” with nominations for best comedy series and for five members of its cast, and “The Good Wife,” with bid for best drama series and lead actress Julianna Margulies.

But the old guard wasn’t exactly left in the dust. Emmy once again showered lots of love on “Mad Men” and “30 Rock,” which will be back to defend their titles as best drama and comedy, respectively, when the awards are handed out on Aug. xx (xx, NBC). Also, the final season of “Lost” is justifiably well-represented with nominations for best drama, a first-time nod for star Matthew Fox and supporting bids for Terry O’Quinn and Michael Emerson.

The leading nominee was HBO’s sprawling World War II miniseries, “The Pacific,” with 24 nominations.

Overall, the Emmy field, lacks the quirkiness of last year, when shows like “Family Guy” and “Flight of the Conchords” seemingly came out of nowhere to crash the party. Even though “Glee,” “Modern Family” and “The Good Wife” bring plenty of fresh buzz to the proceedings, their emergence as Emmy forces was widely predicted by industry observers.

That doesn’t mean the nominations aren’t raising some eyebrows. Among the intriguing angles: Conan O’Brien’s version of “The Tonight Show” beat out Jay Leno’s in the best variety series category (Apparently Emmy voters are members of Team Coco). Scandal-plagued Charlie Sheen (”Two and a Half Men”) was bumped from the best comedy actor competition after nabbing nominations four straight years. David Letterman’s “Late Show” is also missing after a season in which the host admitted to affairs with female staff members and fought a blackmail attempt in court.

The nominations also delivered an uplifting feel-good story as Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, stars of the critically adored, but largely ignored, smalltown drama, “Friday Night Lights,” both secured nominations. Their sparkling performances as a middle-class husband and wife have been heralded since the show debuted in 2006, but until now Emmy voters had given them the cold shoulder.

The most interesting Emmy category is best comedy, which has undergone a major overhaul. Joining “Glee” and “Modern Family” as newcomers to the field is Edie Falco’s darkly humorous “Nurse Jackie.”

“Glee” and “Modern Family,” in particular, figure to pose a major challenge to the three-year domination of Tina Fey’s “30 Rock.” Both boldly redefined their genres and rode a wave of positive buzz through the season. Of the two, “Modern Family” was the most consistently funny and affecting. But while “Glee” didn’t always hit the right notes, it was the television phenomenon of the year and thus probably is the show to beat.

For all the changes in the comedy category, Emmy voters could be criticized for failing to take the revamp even further. Standout sitcoms “The Big Bang Theory,” “Community,” “How I Met Your Mother” and “Cougar Town” could all make a strong case for inclusion in the club, but were snubbed. Meanwhile, “The Office” landed yet another a nomination, despite showing signs of creative wear and tear.

With a 1-0 victory over Germany on Wednesday in front of 60,960 at Moses Modhida Stadium, La Roja advanced to Sunday's final against the Netherlands in Johannesburg. It's the first time in 32 years that two teams that have never held the trophy will face one another for the title.

"We have been waiting for so many years," said Coach Vicente Del Bosque, who played for Spain's national team in the late 1970s and has guided the current group for two years. "Our players carried out their job in a magnificent way."

After dominating possession, Spain finally broke Germany's stout resistance in the 73rd minute. Veteran defender Carles Puyol, who squandered a can't-miss chance in the opening moments, launched himself at Xavi's corner kick and directed a 10-yard header into the right side of the net for just his third goal in 89 national team appearances.

"We dominated the match," Xavi said. "The Spanish personality imposed itself. In the second half, we had the ball virtually all the time."

Germany, a three-time champion seeking an eighth title game berth, will face Uruguay in Saturday's third-place game in Port Elizabeth. The Germans had scored eight goals in the previous two matches, but without quality possession for long periods, they were powerless.

"They are the masters of the game," Germany Coach Joachim Loew said of the Spaniards. "You can see it in every pass. They can hardly be beaten."

The anticipation began to build early in the morning with supporters from both sides in national colors strolling the promenade that leads from the row of seaside hotels and cafes to the glittering arena.

With Brazil, Argentina, Italy, England and France long gone, this match had a championship feel -- reigning European champion Spain, cultivator of immense talent but perennial underachiever in the World Cup, against Germany, a regular figure in the late stages of the tournament.

On the eve of the match, players from both teams suggested an open, entertaining match. Instead of a free-flowing affair, Spain kept an iron grip on possession, laboring to break down the Germans.The ball flowed through Andres Iniesta and Pedro and to Sergio Ramos on the right flank. Germany was left to chase shadows.

In the 14th minute, Puyol wasted Iniesta's cross, sending an unchallenged, routine header over the crossbar. With scant possession, Germany had little to offer until the 32nd minute when Piotr Trochowski's 25-yard effort was slapped aside by the diving Iker Casillas.

USGS reports 5.4 earthquake hits near Borrego Springs California

On July 7, 2010 at just prior to rush hour local time an earthquake shook up southern California.The 30 seconds of shaking and vibration was centered approximately 60 miles northeast of San Diego and 13 miles from the nearest city, Borrego Springs, however the tremors were felt across the region. Reports of strong shaking came from San Diego, Los Angeles and other parts of southern California. Other reports claim areas in northern Mexico, Arizona and Nevada also felt feeling the tremors.The earthquake was located 130 miles east of Los Angeles and 28 miles south of Palm Springs. Initially the U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake as being just under a 6.0 magnitude, but this was later downgraded to a magnitude of 5.4. A 6.0 or higher magnitude earthquake is considered a 'strong' earthquake.

At the time of the earthquake no reports of casualties or damages were reported in any of the areas which felt the impact of the quake. The area is still being checked out to ensure people and structures are OK, and hopefully no serious injuries or worse resulted from the shaking.

This earthquake seems to have no serious aftermath and ABC affiliate KABC in Los Angeles reported the Angeles International Airport issued a statement at approximately 5 p.m. which said "Operations at Los Angeles International Airport are running normally following a small earthquake this afternoon. As always passengers are asked to contact their airlines for the latest information regarding the status of their flights."

Disneyland also reported closed down briefly to give officials a chance to inspect rides to make sure no damage had been sustained to the equipment and ensure visitor safety.

Borrego Springs, which is located in San Diego County and closest to the epicenter, experienced several 3.0 magnitude aftershocks after the initial quake passed, the largest being 3.6. San Diego 6 News reports a viewer stated the "earthquake hit pretty hard here" and "Largest earthquake I have felt in a long time" (San Diego 6 News).

Typically it is common for aftershocks to be felt for several days after an earthquake in this area. San Diego 6 News reported by 5:30 p.m., approximately 35 minutes after the initial quake, more than 30 aftershocks were recorded.

KABC also indicated preliminary reports state the temblor occurred approximately 7.3 miles deep and the earthquake happened on the San Jacinto Fault.

The Wall Street Journal has published a fascinating piece about Floyd Landis’s allegations of widespread doping in professional bike racing.

Predictably, Lance Armstrong dismissed the allegations, saying he is too busy to address the specific claims and attacking Landis’s credibility.

I’ve never studied lying versus truth-telling academically, but I have thought a lot about creativity. And one thing that I have come to believe is that people – virtually all people, including me – are really bad at coming up with new ideas and insights.

That is why I find the Floyd Landis allegations so compelling. He describes in great specificity and detail scenarios involving refrigerators hidden in closets, and the precise temperature at which the blood stored in those refrigerators had to be kept; and faked bus breakdowns during which Lance received blood transfusions while lying on the floor of the bus, etc. To make up stories of this kind, with that sort of detail, strikes me as a difficult task.

If indeed the stories Landis tells are not true, my guess would be that these incidents actually happened, just with a different set of players, and then Landis switched the names.

Further convincing me that there is likely to be truth to what Landis says are personal conversations I have had with a former Tour de France champion. He also spoke with great specificity and a clear understanding of the physiology and science of biking and doping. He was completely convincing to me, and indeed after talking to him I gathered a bunch of data from the Tour de France. An undergraduate working for me found suggestive, but not completely persuasive, statistical evidence of doping in the Tour de France. One of my graduate students is now studying the issue.

More surprising to me than the allegations is the fact that people seem so willing and eager to believe that Lance Armstrong is not doping. The evidence suggests that the benefits of doping in bike racing are perhaps greater than in any other sport except weight-lifting. In contrast to sports like baseball, where it is hard to find obvious links between steroids and performance, when racers/racing teams are caught doping and confess the details of when they started, the improvement in their times is stark. When the benefits of cheating are so great, it is statistically unlikely that anyone could race at the top without cheating. So many of the top racers have been caught. And it is not like Lance looks particularly clean. An Italian doctor who he worked with, Dr. Ferrari, went on trial for doping-related charges. Interestingly, Armstrong denied any ties to Ferrari until he was caught on a hidden camera exiting Ferrari’s office building, or so I am told.

The single best idea I’ve heard with respect to doping comes from Aaron Zelinsky, who argues that the blood and urine of current competitors should be kept around for decades and systematically tested as new technologies are developed. If anything illegal is ever detected, the cheating is then publicly revealed. Indeed, in a shadowy and perhaps illegal way, that basic approach led to an alleged positive EPO test for Armstrong, when a French newspaper reported that old urine samples from an earlier period (before a test for EPO existed) tested positive for the substance on the new test.

Maybe the answer is simpler still…just let the racers dope freely, as Dubner argued on the blog a few years back.

Leslie Van Houten, a Charles Manson follower who was convicted in the 1969 LaBianca killings, is again seeking freedom.

After more than 40 years in prison and more than a dozen times seeking parole and getting rejected, she's hoping her time has come.

On the LA Now story, the majority of readers who chose to leave comments say she should remain in jail. A few dissenters disagreed, saying she has put in her time and has likely seen the error of her ways.

Hawk Eye: I remember when after they were caught they had no regrets and liked the publicity. They were quite proud of themselves. Leave her in prison.

John from the West Side: Even if the parole board were to grant parole, it then goes to the governor. Does anyone believe ANY sitting governor would grant ANY member of the Manson Family parole -- ever?

Michael: Let's make the leap that our penal system actually works and let this woman go. How long was she with Manson, a year maybe? The point of putting people in prison is to punish, rehabilitate, then release. Judges and parole boards are there to make sensible decisions about whether someone is rehabilitated or not. If these people think that, after 40 years, this 60-year old woman is going to go out and murder someone again, then they should be removed from their jobs and be replaced with people who are intelligent, thoughtful, and guided more by what is right than any political, social, or religious motivations.

Manon: Let her go already. Even [prosecutor Vincent] Bugliosi agrees they have served their time. She is not a threat to society. She was a young girl brainwashed by a sadistic cult leader. She deserves some sympathy, too.

Lisa Kelly glams up before “Ice Road Truckers” begins As “Ice Road Truckers” heads into its second season Lisa Kelly got a chance glam up in Sterling,Alaska. She said “That was fun, but it was very cold out.”

Usually when we see Kelly she’s behind the wheel of a giant truck trundling along a frozen road, risking life and limb on the show but she has also become a kind of sex symbol through her appearance on the History Channel’s show.

It’s certain that she’s definitely the most attractive of the truckers on the show, not a hard thing, I assure you but when questioned about a being a sex symbol she said.

“I don’t know. I don’t know what other people are gonna think…It’s interesting to put a woman’s twist on [‘Ice Road Truckers’] and if that’s how I’m perceived, well, it’s not up to me.”

This season will see the truckers hauling cement across India’s Himalayas, not quite as glamorous as the photo shoot.

“It was completely different in every way…It was just a cliffside; we have mountain driving here, but not a little road that goes higher and higher.

“And the trucks [in India] are different,” she said. “They’re not as big and not very powerful at all, which added to the danger factor. We had an Indian spotter with us for safety’s sake and he ended up being more of a pain than a help — he was confusing me on the rules and making stuff up as we went along.”

Now that filming has finsined on season two the sky is the limit for Kelly. She said “I have nothing in the chamber right now, just whatever comes my way. The show has opened up a lot of doors.”
