My Memories Review and Giveaway!

Yesterday I mentioned a special post featuring My Memories Suite and here it is! I hope y'all are as excited as I am!

I have always wanted to create elaborate scrapbooks with my TONS of family photos. (I live with a professional photographer who started out with a wicked photography hobby.) However, where I have a knack for creativity, I have an even greater lack of patience (and space).

I have some friends who love digital scrapbooking. I have admired their layouts and abilities, but have never attempted my own....until now.

My Memories offered their complete digital software suite to get me started and I must say....it is simply amazing! And LOADED. I have been playing with it all week and I have barely scratched the surface.

First, I chose background paper, colors, and textures. I had a choice of several different layout templates, but I chose to go it alone with the blank page. Once I get the hang of it, I bet the templates make for quick creations.

Then, I added my photos. You can resize, darken, lighten, blur. You can mat them in your choice of color, flip them, reshape them, and cast all sorts of shadows. Fun!

Next, I added the text. Same thing---colors, gradient, curve, shadow, etc.

Finally...embellishments! This is where you add an extra dose of personality. Ribbons, buttons, stitching...too many to even try to mention here. I suggest using the search box.

I am a true beginner (so keep that in mind) and this is what I have created with my digital scrapbooking software from My Memories:

(*Background note--these pages are part of an album I am creating from photos taken at my niece's recent funeral. Sad, but very beautiful.)

My color scheme is pink and gray. Some of my pages are pink and some are charcoal. Notice my photos are matted and also have heavy shadows. I like that look. The letters are also heavily shadowed. The bow, button, and butterflies are from the embellishments. I have quite a few pages left to create, but I am very happy with how it is coming together. I can't wait to dig deeper and learn more about this software.

Once my album is complete, I will be able to save it as jpeg files on my computer, print it out, or put it on a DVD. I can even add music. I think I will add music from the funeral....

March Update--Rambling Bullets

What have I been up to, you ask? Well, let me catch you up with a bullet list....

Mildest.winter.ever. No snow at all. :o( (Everyone needs one good snow...)
Earliest.spring.ever. My lilies are coming up and the azaleas are budding out. The tree I planted last Mother's Day surprised the heck out of all of us when it popped out a bunch of tiny white flowers a couple of weeks ago. It has looked like a stick since last summer. We thought it was dead, but thanks to my procrastination/lack of motivation, not to mention my dislike of getting my hands dirty....it's ahhh-livvveeeeee. That's the way I garden. I pretty much let the plants have their own way....do their own thing. That's how I get down.
Everything is covered in pollen; however, my allergies are mild (so far). Could it be the local honey?? Experts say no....
I spent the entire month of February and first week of March counting down to Spring Break. I thought it was this week. It's next week. The let-down was tremendous.
I've been reading the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. Fun! I decided to read "One for the Money" after the movie came out. I'm glad I did. I'm on book five. I think it's called "High Five". (For the record, I haven't seen the movie.)
It's March and I still haven't posted about my 2012 Word of the Year. Who chooses a word and waits until March to mention it?? Me.... Oh, by the way....that's my word. ME. I decided to work on ME in 2012. It's not an easy word, that's for sure. It's a struggle. I hope it's worth it in the end...
On a happy note, my grandson (Yikes!! GRANDson?!?!) will be here any day now. Of course, I've been saying that for weeks... It will happen eventually. Patience. Must.have.patience.
Soon I will be wrapping that bambino in this beautiful hand made blankie. Isn't it gorgeous?? My friend, Sheri made it especially for the baby. (She's a sweetie.)

On another happy note, my son went on a one day field trip to St. Louis with his school last week. He actually had fun! He has Asperger's Syndrome, so just the fact that he made it onto that bus and out of his norm is HUGE. Having fun is icing on the cake. SO happy for him....
On a very sad note, my niece was born still earlier this month. Her funeral was last week. So very horrible. She was much wanted and will be missed terribly. That's really all I have to say about that. :o(
This week I will be registering my middle child for high school. (Does that make me sound as old as I think it does?? Probably not as old as the GRANDson on the way, right??) *sigh*
I will soon be registering my youngest child for Kindergarten. *double sigh* Where has the time gone?????

The Last Day...

Can you believe it is the last day of February?? Already??

The last day of February sort of sends a signal that spring is coming, especially with this year's super mild winter. There is still plenty of time for a little snow, though...

It's also the last day of Heart Month. I'd like to end this Heart Month by posting something paramount, something that would showcase a bit of wisdom gained from my years in the role of 'Heart Mom'.

I can't seem to get past ponderous. The more I try to think about it, the more I face my biggest fear--fear itself.

About a year and a half ago, I met a fellow Heart Mom.

In real life.

That doesn't happen often, even though there are many of us. To meet someone with a child like mine, in an every day-random-sort-of-way....never happens.

But, it did.

Our kids, close in age, were born with similar heart defects.

Now, I'm not claiming a BFF situation. The truth is, we met a couple of times while she was taking care of my mom during a hospital stay. Afterwards, we did some messaging and we planned playdates that never happened. You know...we are all so busy... We celebrated the good and prayed for the not so good. And then, with little to no warning, her child...died. Last week.

Rocked.my.world.

Reality slapped me upside my head. My friend buried her beautiful, almost five year old, full of life, perfectly adorable child last weekend. (I wish I could share a photo, but out of respect, I'm keeping the details to myself. I'm sure y'all understand.)

I can't stop thinking about her.

I can't stop thinking about how much I still take for granted. Every day is a blessing. Every day is a blessing.

Every.single.day.

If I can just pass THAT message along during Heart Month, to myself and to all of y'all, then I've accomplished something.

It's Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Week--Reflections of CHD

Three years ago on this day, we were inpatient at LeBonheur, preparing for Eli's open heart surgery the
following day.

It was OHS Eve.

You know that feeling you get when you are driving and you have a 'near miss' with another car? That feeling that starts in your brain, moves into the pit of your stomach, camping out just long enough to make you sick, then moving down your legs, making you weak in the knees?

Yeah. That feeling.

That's what OHS Eve feels like. It comes over you in waves like the tide, pounding against your soul. It whispers the details you fight so hard NOT to think about. Over and over it comes, stealing your breath, knocking you to your knees as you watch your child sleeping in ignorant bliss. Scary. Scary for anyone at any time, but none more fearful than when it is your baby in that bed, in pre-op holding, being carried away by masked strangers, waiting to have his heart stopped.

No sir.

If you know me at all, you know that we are quietly celebrating a successful surgery three years later--thankful every day as we watch our son grow.

February 7-14th is Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Week. This week someone you know will write a blog post or a Facebook status filled with personal CHD experiences or facts and statistics. You may think no one you know in real life has experienced CHD. You are probably wrong.

There are lots of us.

In spite of a lack of research funding compared to other serious birth defects and childhood conditions, the advancements made in care and treatment of Congenital Heart Disease over the past 20-30 years is amazing. I can only imagine what could have happened if funding truly matched the level of need.

My oldest son might still be alive.

That's why CHD Awareness Week is so important.

A few facts for you taken from the March of Dimes website:

About 35,000 infants (1 out of every 125) are born with heart defects each year in the United States. (Other organizations estimate closer to 40,000 or 1 out of every 100)
The defect may be so slight that the baby appears healthy for many years after birth, or so severe that his life is in immediate danger.
Heart defects are among the most common birth defects and are the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths.
In the United States, about 1.4 million children and adults live with congenital heart defects today. Almost all are able to lead active, productive lives.

The Dollhouse Project--Part 2

My dollhouse is coming along!

I have all of the 'siding' on and I've painted one side, including the bricks on the fireplace.

I'm going to add rounded posts on the front to make it not so flat. (It has to be fairly flat to fit

back into the case.)

Here's a shot of the other side without paint. I have the 'grout' color on the fireplace.

My pictures aren't great today; something is up with my flash.

But you get the idea.

The Dollhouse Project

A couple of weeks ago, my husband brought home a dollhouse he found at a thrift store. We have no need for a dollhouse, really, but this one was really unique. It comes apart and fits into a wooden case--like an oversize brief case. When you put it together, you use the lid of the case as the bottom floor. Cool, huh?

I've never seen anything like it. I had Barbie dolls as a girl and my dollhouses were Barbie products. My girl was never much of a 'doll girl', so no dollhouses for her. This is a 'real' dollhouse. The kind that you use with those tiny Fisher Price type family dolls.

The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to fix that dollhouse. So...that's exactly what I'm doing. And it's fun! I have no idea what I'm going to do with it when I'm finished. Sell it on eBay, maybe? We will see.

In the meantime, I thought I'd just blog about the process.

Isn't it awesome? My first step was to choose exterior colors and embellishments. I wanted 'real' shingles. Hubby helped with this. We used sandpaper.

I finally chose the colors.....yellow with black shutters. I tried many colors....

I decided wood siding would be perfect. I'm using popsicle sticks. I plan to paint bricks on both fireplaces. The yellow on these siding sticks is the final color for the exterior.

I will update as I go. See the Scrabble tiles in the top window? I'm thinking of 'tile' floors in the kitchen!

Book Review--Coming Back Stronger by Drew Brees

I think everyone has heard of Drew Brees by now and his Cinderella comeback from a near career-ending injury to lead the Katrina-destroyed New Orleans Saints to their first Super Bowl ever. In his book Coming Back Stronger, Drew tells the story of hitting the NFL bottom due to injury, working his way back to health, and his gut feeling that led him to choose the Saints for his comeback.

They say that New Orleans needed a hero after Katrina and that hero showed up in a Saints uniform. However, Drew tells the story of a man who desperately needed someone to believe in him--as a player, a leader, and as a man. It was a win-win situation.

This book is so much more than football. It’s about struggle, adversity, pain, faith, love, hope, dedication…. I could go on and on. It’s an amazing story.

As a football fan, I enjoyed reading about the inner workings of football. As a Christian, I enjoyed reading about how everything in Drew’s life worked out for the good of many. You do not have to be either to enjoy Drew's story.

Where Do I Go from Here?

I have been agonizing over whether I should blog about 2011’s major events (namely, my son’s Make-A-

Wish party and trip) or if I should just go ahead with my thoughts, plans, desires, and word-of-the-year for 2012. I can come back to 2011 later. I mean, the end of January is already fast approaching….the agonizing cannot go on much longer!

Let’s be honest….

It has been quite some time since any real, heartfelt content has been posted here on my blog. It is no real secret that I have been struggling for months. Oh, I have been writing; it isn’t writer’s block. I have written hundreds of posts over the past six months or so. Some I have written in my head, some in notebooks, and others are sitting right here in draft mode, just waiting. So….why can’t I just click ‘publish’ and stop agonizing, you ask?

Good question.

I don’t know.

Or, I didn’t know, but I think I have finally figured it out.

Finally.

See, when I first started blogging way back in 2006, the purpose was to preserve memories. I had just been handed a hefty dose of mortality--my son was not supposed to make it to birth and if he did, it was not going to be pretty. I had already buried one son, so when my baby was born alive and very stable, well… I wanted to make sure I recorded life in a way that my memories would be preserved and available. Plus, blogging was gaining ground with my circle of homeschooling, stay-at-home moms.

Part journal, part scrapbook, my blog was a fun way to save photos, to talk about homeschooling (and record our progress), to show off my art, crafts, and DIY projects, and to tell what it is like to have a bunch of kids and everything that goes along with parenting. Life, really.

Just…LIFE.

One day I received an email inquiry asking if I would accept a free product in exchange for a written review on my blog. Then another came. And another.

How exciting!

It was not long before my purpose for blogging shifted. It was not so much about my life any longer. It became ~~a little bit~~ about the stuff. Soon, it was page views, followers, and wanting to be one of those bloggers who go to conventions, the ones who get front-loading washing machines and Frigidaire refrigerators to review and to give away to their readers.

There is nothing wrong with that. Nothing at all. The problem? You have to *really* put yourself out there. You have to be REAL--every day you have to post without fear or abandon. I did that….to a tiny extent, for a short time. Then I started questioning myself.

I could not decide if I wanted to be ‘that real’. To post and tweet my every move, to post unplanned photos (*gasp* and YIKES…. I am NOT photogenic, and I’m always wearing this fat suit. *sigh*) just seemed like too much.

Did I really want to deal with the controversy surrounding something I had posted? Could I handle it if someone questioned something in which I strongly believe? Or something that I am strongly against? Could I handle personal attacks?

Shaken by blogger horror stories, I pulled back. I questioned every single post. I practically stopped tweeting altogether. I teetered on the edge and then…

I developed full-fledged blogger anxiety.

I gathered my resolve on numerous occasions, promising to post something meaningful tomorrow.

Always tomorrow.

A few days ago, I received a comment from a new reader that set me back on the right path. This new reader was searching for support. Her baby was just diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease. After receiving her comment, I realized (finally!) that it has not been an issue of laziness or a lack of motivation holding back my blogging. The fact of the matter is…..

I lost my direction.

My blog is meant to tell my story. Period. It is not meant to bring in a paycheck (which is a particularly laughable statement at this point). It is not about page views and unique visitors and ad clicks and LG appliances, or any other branding.

It is about ME. My family. My life.

This does not mean that you will never read a new book review or see a product review and giveaway here at The Box of Rocks--(I have a NOVICA $50 GC giveaway coming next week!) It just means that if/when it happens….great! If my blog generates a little interest in the blogging business world….terrific! And if it doesn’t? No sweat. Do I want readers and followers? Of course! If my life experiences can help or motivate others….wonderful! If I can share an occasional good book or awesome product….all the better!

No more tomorrows. Today is tomorrow.

Now that I have found my focus, I am all set.

It's Jumping Time Again!!

Yep. Cade has one week to raise money for his school's Jump Rope for Heart program. He is just as excited now as he was last year, his first year to jump. I wrote about my feelings last year. It's a really big deal in our home since we have been so intimately touched by 'special hearts'.

Cade is jumping for Eli again this year. It feels great to see him get excited about honoring his little brother. (Not to mention bringing awareness of CHD to our community.)

I've seen many a Potato Head creation over the past twenty years or so, but I do believe this is a first.....

Mr. (Mrs.??) PH seemed to really like Woody.

There were lots of kissing sounds going on.
