The main features here are the lightweight construction and the associated use of the most varied of low-density materials, such as aluminium, magnesium, titanium, as well as the latest plastic and composite materials – Kevlar for instance. It goes without saying that, according to Swiss tradition, the highest demands in terms of quality apply here as well.

The company gets its name from Renй Beck, who can look back on a history of over 20 years in the construction of prototypes and vehicles. Even when he was a schoolboy, in every free minute he was already fiddling around with home-made sports cars and working on his dream. His motto then is still the same now: „We start at the point where others have already given up.“

Much in the fields of lightweight construction and highly refined aerodynamics has been borrowed from nature, as nature always demonstrates an enormously high level of efficiency in all its „designs“. Also, some solutions have their origins in Formula 1 when it comes to both technical components and the construction methods used in the car.

The very low drag coefficient (cw value) resulted from a reduction in the cross-sectional area of the vehicle to an absolute minimum. There is no superfluous material to impede the lines, so that the consistent implementation of „form follows function” has led to a very special appearance with its own highly technically- and performance-orientated, futuristic aesthetic.

The Beck LM 800 is a car that imparts a feeling of pure enjoyment of sport from within, has optimal driving characteristics thanks to its active, electronically controlled chassis and has enormous power reserves at its disposal as a result of its very light weight. In addition, the vehicle is very easy to maintain, thanks to its modular construction and telescopic jacking system.

The basic construction of the car is similar to a Formula 1 racing car with a central monocoque made of composite materials that protect the driver and provide the necessary rigidity. Fixed to this are the engine and gearbox support, as well as the front transverse control arms of the chassis.

The central monocoque takes all the static load and provides the car with its necessary rigidity. It is made up from an aluminium frame and the latest composite materials. The same material mix of carbon, Kevlar and aluminium that is used for the monocoque is also used for various bodywork parts. This has the big advantage that the new regulations governing personal protection have already been implemented.

All attachment parts are made of a high-strength aluminium alloy. They are milled out of solid pieces, undergo surface treatment and are then power coated.

The top four layers of the visible parts are made of carbon and the fabric and leather covered components are made of 100% Kevlar. All parts are screwed and/or glued together. The ergonomically shaped seats are produced specially and made of several layers of Kevlar which are then well upholstered. The digital instruments satisfy even the toughest demands.

The car has an electronically controlled, hydraulic active chassis, as normally used in Formula 1 cars, which reacts to all telemetry data. The wheels are also made from specially manufactured aluminium parts, milled out of solid pieces and then coated.

The engine is a V8 with a displacement of 4.2 litres, also equipped with a turbo-charger that has been specially produced for the Beck LM 800. A semi-sequential, 7-speed gearbox ensures smooth power transmission to the wheels via a limited slip differential, with plenty in reserve at 650 HP. Gear changing takes place either with a conventional gearstick or using a rocker switch on the steering wheel.

The built-in pneumatic jacking system, making tyre changing child’s play, is very innovative in a car approved for street use, as it is normally used on racing cars.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage N24

Aston Martin has confirmed details of its N24 race car, based on the critically acclaimed V8 Vantage road car, which will be showcased at the Autosport International Show this week.

The Vantage N24 is based on a standard European specification production V8 Vantage, with modifications undertaken to prepare the car for the competitive racing environment.

At the 2006 British Motor Show, Aston Martin Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez, announced that the company would build a limited production run of cars based on the V8 Vantage that completed the Nьrburgring 24-hour endurance race that June. The near standard V8 Vantage finished 24th overall out of 220 starters, completing some 130 laps of the 15.77 mile circuit – in a field of mostly specialised race-homologated entrants.

The Nьrburgring 24-hour race not only gives its name to the V8 Vantage N24, but provided a conclusive demonstration of its abilities; a near standard car capable of tackling the demands of one of the world's most arduous racing circuits.

The Vantage N24 subsequently went on to finish eighth overall in the inaugural 24-hour race of Bahrain in December 2006, again competing with highly modified race cars. During the course of the race, the Vantage N24 covered over 2600km, needing only fuel, brake pads and tyres.

With the formation of Aston Martin Racing in 2004, the company made a long awaited and successful return to international sports car racing firstly with the GT1 DBR9 in 2005 followed by the GT3 DBRS9 in 2006. However, the company also has a long history of racing near standard cars both at national and at international level. The Vantage N24 builds on this tradition - a factory built car proven and ready to race.

The Vantage N24 will be fastidiously hand built in a dedicated facility within Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters. The level of detail and finish conforms to Aston Martin’s exacting standards, fusing hand craftsmanship with advanced technology. The build of the first customer cars will commence in the coming weeks.

The Vantage N24’s engine is modified to enhance throttle response and performance; including the crankshaft, conrods and pistons being lightened and balanced, the cylinder heads re-profiled to optimise compression ratio and gas flow and the engine management system is calibrated for race use.

The N24 also benefits from a free flow exhaust system and improved air filters. The standard V8 dry sump lubrication system is retained helping prevent oil surges during extreme cornering. The result is 410bhp (305KW) at 7500rpm – a 30bhp increase over the standard car.

The N24 is available with a 6-speed manual transmission only. A Valeo twin plate cerametalic racing clutch and lightweight flywheel complete the powertrain specification.

At 1330kg the Vantage N24 weighs in at 250kg lighter than the standard car. The interior trim of the standard car is removed apart from the facia moulding which is re-trimmed in Alcantara. The console and door casings are replaced by new lightweight mouldings. The air-conditioning system is removed as are the airbags. The interior features a full high strength steel roll cage and Recaro Pole Position competition shell (a passenger seat and safety harness is an optional extra). A suede-trimmed steering wheel with a quick release mechanism is also fitted as standard. The Vantage N24’s safety features are completed with a Schroth six-point safety harness with a push button release and Lifeline Zero 360 gas extinguisher system.

The Vantage N24's underframe and body has also been discreetly modified to save weight and increase trackside practicality. Tapping plates have been included to accommodate the use of pneumatic jacks, and motor sport towing eyes are attached to the chassis. The side and rear windows have been replaced with clear polycarbonate, with a sliding opening on the driver's side. The bonnet and tail latches are now quick release items.

The V8 Vantage’s acclaimed suspension has required only minor adjustments to optimise it for track use. These include larger diameter front and rear anti-roll bars and adjustable ride height aluminium dampers, as well as single rate flat ground springs with separate helper springs. The front subframe has been modified for extra camber and castor, while Speedline cast magnesium front and rear wheels are standard, along with high performance Yokohama AO48 tyres.

The brakes have been up-rated with Pagid RS 29 race pads. As further endorsement of the standard V8 Vantage’s abilities, the active safety systems are directly carried over to the Vantage N24 including dynamic stability control, traction control, ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution, providing reassurance and control in slippery conditions.

The Vantage N24 provides an ideal base for a wide variety of Motorsport uses and is ideal for club racing amongst other categories. As supplied it is eligible for series such as the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nьrburgring, the Britcar endurance series, the Dutch Supercar Challenge, the Australian GT Championship and the European Endurance Championship. In addition, the Vantage N24 is also potentially eligible for the proposed European GT4 series, the Grand-Am Cup and SCCA Touring Car Class in the USA.

The Vantage N24 is on sale now with prices starting at Ј78,720 plus local taxes and delivery. The customer version of the N24 will make its public debut at the Autosport International Show at the Birmingham NEC from 11th January, as a guest car on tyre partner, Yokohama’s, stand.

Lexus LF-A Sports Car Concept

The LF-A sports-car concept was originally shown at the 2005 NAIAS to express a bold new direction in styling for the Lexus brand. The goals for the new LF-A are no different than they were with the original concept: To build a supercar with world-class performance that is uniquely Lexus.

As with all new Lexus vehicles, the styling of the LF-A is rooted in a design direction called L-finesse. The concept of L-finesse was used to shape and detail the original LF-A, and it was used to reshape, redetail and redefine this latest version. Lexus has further refined the styling of the new LF-A to enhance its exotic nature with a greater use of curved surfaces and interesting details.

The running gear of the LF-A is just as it was with the original, powered by a high-revving 500-plus horsepower V10 engine. Its front mid-engine placement, along with a rear-mounted transaxle and rear-mounted radiators, allows for excellent weight distribution. The horsepower, superior aerodynamics, and revised styling makes a top speed of 200 mph not only possible but probable.

An "F" logo, indicating the vehicle's status as a part of the new "F" marque, is located on each front fender.

"The first LF-A was a pure concept, but one that we went so far as to conduct engineering analysis on," said Carter. "This latest concept is much closer to a vehicle that we would bring to market, and one in which we will be gauging consumer interest."

Lexus LF-A Sports Concept Preliminary Specifications

Powertrain
Engine: V10 (under 5.0-liters)
Horsepower: More than 500
Top Speed: Approximately 200 MPH

Tire Size
Front: 265/35R20
Rear: 305/30R20

Dimensions (inches)
Overall Length: 175.6
Overall Width: 74.6
Overall Height: 48.0
Wheelbase: 102.3

Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Concept

The Chevrolet Camaro concept was the celebrated star of the 2006 auto show season. You can only top that by literally and figuratively blowing the top off. That’s exactly what GM’s designers and engineers did to create the Camaro convertible concept. The introduction of the Camaro convertible concept was on the eve of the North American International Auto Show at GM Style, an exclusive, fashion-splashed event combining celebrities, couture and automobiles.

The Camaro convertible concept, wrapped in Hugger Orange pearl tri-coat paint with twin gunmetal gray sport stripes, is based on the original Camaro concept, with only minor changes required to accommodate the convertible body style.

“The best follow-up to last year’s award-winning Camaro concept is a Camaro convertible,” said Ed Welburn, GM vice president, global design. “The Camaro convertible concept instantly evokes an emotional response – it’s a vehicle that you want to make room for in your garage.”

The Camaro convertible concept embodies strong heritage while appealing to a new generation of customers who seek a distinctive statement in a new car.

“For some of us, an emotional bond was formed when we introduced the Camaro coupe last year,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “It is magnificent. But now this year, if this Camaro convertible doesn’t make your heart beat faster, you should see either your optometrist or your cardiologist, because you have a problem.”

Chevrolet already has announced production plans for the Camaro, which will go on sale in 2009. A production convertible model will be added later that year.

Fun spirit

Like the Camaro concept vehicle, the Camaro convertible concept blends a dramatic, forward-looking design that is mindful of the brand’s storied heritage. That design includes classic long hood/short deck proportions and a wide, wheels-at-the-corners stance that gives the vehicle the look of hugging corners even when stationary.

The Camaro convertible concept is motivated by a torquey V-8 engine that rightly sends power to the rear wheels via a manual transmission. It also features a four-wheel independent suspension system and four-wheel disc brakes.

“There is an undeniably fun spirit with the Camaro convertible concept,” said Peper. “The promise of fun made by the convertible top is reinforced with the Camaro’s ‘let’s go’ stance – it’s a car that begs to be driven.”

The Camaro convertible concept shares exterior dimensions with the Camaro concept, although the convertible concept’s windshield surround, which features a bright anodized finish, is changed slightly to accommodate the convertible top.

Additional design details include:

* Tonneau cover over the folded top
* “Halo” headlamps
* LED taillamps
* Rear spoiler with LED-lit CHMSL
* Racing-inspired fuel filler door
* Front-inlet hood scoop, inspired by the Corvette Z06
* Heritage-inspired rear fender “gills”
* Anodized aluminum door handles
* Bold 21-inch (front) and 22-inch (rear) wheels, with accent color

The Camaro convertible concept’s Hugger Orange pearl tri-coat color is a contemporary update of the classic hue, which was originally offered in 1969. It is complemented with twin gunmetal gray sport stripes. The modern interpretation of the classic color and its dark accent stripes simultaneously reflect the Camaro’s heritage and deliver a deep, lustrous and thoroughly contemporary appearance.

The Camaro convertible concept rides on 21-inch front wheels and 22-inch rear wheels. The wheels have a deep-dish, five-spoke design and feature charcoal center sections with bright outer edges and a red outline on the wheel edge. The charcoal wheels complement the gunmetal gray stripes on the body.

Inspired cockpit

Inside, the Camaro convertible features a simple yet purposeful interior that reflects design elements inspired by the muscle car era, including the first-generation Camaro. A new, light-and-dark color scheme enhances the airy feel of the convertible, particularly when the top is lowered.

The seats’ fronts feature platinum-tone leather surrounding suede-like Alcantara® inserts, with black, sculpted seatbacks. The use of light color only on the seating surface is reminiscent of vintage houndstooth interiors, while a matching, tri-coat platinum paint is used to accent the door panels and instrument panel, giving a modern, bold feel to the interior.

“The light-on-dark interior coloring makes a strong statement that conveys the spirit of freedom and fun that is embodied by a Camaro convertible,” said Micah Jones, interior designer.

As with the Camaro coupe concept, the convertible concept features an instrument panel inspired by first-generation Camaros, including an intricate “round-gauges-in-square-holes” design. The gauges have a deep, three-dimensional appearance, with white faces and red pointers.

“The instrument panel – including the four auxiliary gauges mounted in front of the shifter – pays homage to first-generation Camaros, while achieving a modern appearance through its refined integration of components,” said Jones.

Craftsmanship and attention to detail are evidenced throughout the interior, including the smoke satin aluminum finish on trim plates, vents, seat handles and safety belt buckles. The shifter and pedals are made of billet aluminum. The steering wheel has a detailed, deep-dish three-spoke design and the front seats are hinged at the center – rather than the sides – for an integrated appearance. A separate ignition button is used to start the engine and the speedometer and tachometer needles complete full-sweep indexing when the engine rumbles to life.

A “spine” motif runs through the center of the vehicle and on the seatbacks, including a prominent center console that stretches to the rear seat. The spine reinforces the symmetry of the Camaro convertible, as well as its precision.

An attainable icon

The original Camaro was introduced to the Baby Boomer generation, a large group of young, individualistic and mobile Americans that drove fundamental changes in the auto industry. The Camaro was personal, sporty and powerful – attributes that were typically found on more expensive, smaller and, often, foreign sports cars. The Camaro represented a real life-sized sporty car that was attainable for just about everyone. An almost endless list of optional features, colors and trim combinations ensured owners could tailor their Camaro to their exact taste.

As Boomers transitioned into larger vehicles to accommodate growing families, younger drivers embraced used Camaros as their first cars, and third- and fourth-generations of the Camaro continued to deliver affordable fun and performance to a new generation of enthusiasts. Indeed, hundreds of thousands of owners of all walks of life have found driving fun in a Camaro during the past 40 years.

The new Camaro concepts draw on their namesakes’ heritage, but also the global, youthful influences of the 21 st century. These influences are seen in the Camaro convertible concept’s bold proportions, tailored wheel-to-body relationship and detailed interior – including the multi-dimensional instruments. It’s a design that resonates with a generation of younger car buyers influenced by highly stylized “tuner” cars and import sports cars.

“Youthful buyers want a car that makes a statement in its design as much as its performance,” said Brian Smith, exterior designer. “The new Camaro concepts bridge heritage with contemporary style, with a design that is simultaneously admired among import-influenced youth and traditional enthusiasts.”

Along with style and performance, the timeless spirit of fun is woven into the new Camaro concepts.

“Camaro has always represented the American ethic that style and performance don’t belong exclusively to the wealthy,” said Smith. “Camaro has always been everybody’s sports car, and these new concepts demonstrate its spirit is relevant for a new generation.”

Lincoln MKR Concept Car

Lincoln is pulling the wraps off a head-turning new concept car at the North American International Auto Show next week, signaling its design strategy for the next-generation of premium American vehicles and launching a new engine family.

The Lincoln MKR concept introduces a new design language of “elegant simplicity” on a four-door coupe that also features environmentally friendly amenities and fuel-saving technology, including its TwinForce™ engine.

The concept’s 3.5-liter gasoline twin-turbocharged direct-injection V-6 performs comparably or better than V-8 engines, delivering 415 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque on renewable E-85 ethanol.

A New Era of Lincoln Design
The new design – created by a team led by Peter Horbury, executive director, Design, The Americas – showcases the visual elements that will influence a new generation of Lincoln products.

“We’ve reinterpreted the best of Lincoln designs over time, preserving the restraint and elegance synonymous with the brand,” says Horbury. “The Lincoln MKR concept is sophisticated and modern, resembling an athlete – extremely strong and fit but looks elegant in a tuxedo.

“This romantic, sporting coupe should turn heads at the show. And, ultimately, this new design language will help lead us forward in the growing premium segment.”

The Lincoln MKR concept features seven key exterior cues, which define modern Lincoln design:

* Clean, uncluttered surfaces
* Powerful, dynamic beltline
* Chamfered surface running parallel to the beltline
* Distinctive Lincoln bow-wave, double-wing grille opening
* Thin, horizontal taillamps that run from one side to the other
* Significant C-pillar smoothly transitioning into the cantilevered roof, and
* Powerful cantrail/roofrail

Three or four of these design elements are likely to appear on future production Lincolns, including the concept’s most dramatic feature: the double-wing grille inspired by the 1941 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet. The split grille is designed to resemble the bow of a boat cutting through the water, giving the oversize Lincoln star a proper home on which to stand proud.

The Lincoln MKR concept’s four doors and body side remain characteristically clean. A button concealed in the chrome door trim springs open the four ‘winged’ doors, slightly inclined for additional sophistication and a touch of drama.

From the rear, the coupe concept is instantly recognizable as a Lincoln, thanks to full-width LED taillamps stretching from side to side.

From above, this Lincoln proudly showcases its brand heritage with a large structural Lincoln star that punctuates the glass roof spanning the top of the car.

Modern, ‘Guilt-free’ Luxury Touches

Inside, the Lincoln MKR concept defines a new direction for modern luxury, with ambient lighting and contrasting colors and materials that offer both a new look and philosophy for future Lincoln interiors.

“The concept’s interior builds on the success of earlier Lincolns but stretches the boundaries even further,” said Gordon Platto, chief designer of the Lincoln MKR concept. “This unique combination of materials gives the Lincoln MKR a rich interior but features the environmentally friendly amenities that luxury buyers expect in premium goods, including vehicles.”

A black oak instrument panel engineered from recycled wood stretches from side to side and carries through to a twin-level floating center console that extends into the rear of the cabin.

This expansive ‘T-shaped’ panel houses the passenger information display system seamlessly disguised by the flush touch screen control surfaces and a navigation screen that can be concealed by a powered door.

The instrument cluster provides a jewelry-like focal point. Chrome-trimmed gauges illuminated with Ice Blue lighting can be easily viewed in harmony with the concave spoke steering wheel that includes retractable paddle shifters.

“Lighting is an important design element,” Platto said. “We know customers are paying more attention to the lighting in their homes than ever before, and we wanted to leverage it to create even more ambiance and drama inside the concept.”

Ice Blue lighting is carried throughout the high-contrast interior, emitting from the door panels, mohair-carpeted foot wells, seats, center console and perhaps most dramatically from the large Lincoln star above which is easily viewed from each of the Lincoln MKR concept’s four seats.

Each soy-foam based seat stands alone, looking as if suspended in air, wrapped in a creamy cashmere leather made through a more environmentally friendly chromium-free process. Seatbacks are finished with high-gloss, ceramic-looking shells.

The concept also features the THX II Certified Car Audio System, Lincoln’s signature audio system, which produces sound quality comparable to home theater systems.

Innovative TwinForce™ Powertrain

Under the Lincoln MKR’s sculpted hood is the exquisitely detailed TwinForce engine, finished in chrome and accented in the cranberry red metallic paint that dresses the rest of the modern exterior.

This marks the birth of the new TwinForce engine family that will power production versions of a range of future Ford and Lincoln products.

TwinForce uses direct injection technology and turbocharging. These technologies are common in diesel engines but have only recently been combined together in gasoline engines.

The Lincoln MKR’s engine also is flex fuel capable, providing the driver with the flexibility to switch back and forth between gasoline and E-85 ethanol. Combining the high octane found in E-85 or premium gasoline with TwinForce technology allows the MKR’s V-6 to deliver 415 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque – an impressive 118 horsepower per liter.

To achieve this type of performance from a V-8 would require an engine displacement of 6.0-liter or larger, nearly double the size of the 3.5-liter in the Lincoln MKR. As a result of the smaller V-6, the Lincoln MKR concept delivers 15 percent better fuel economy than a V-8 with similar performance.

The concept’s engine is mated to a six-speed transmission, and the concept features independent rear suspension for more refined road manners.

The car sits on 21-inch chrome aluminum wheels fitted with unique Michelin tires that feature the Lincoln star in its treads.

“The Lincoln MKR concept is important because it marks a new era for the brand,” Horbury said. “This is a showcase of modern design that marries power, performance and, essentially, ‘guilt-free’ luxury.”

Lincoln MKR Concept Specifications

Powertrain
3.5-liter V-6 TwinForce engine
Chassis lengths
Overall length .......................195.7 in.
Wheelbase .............................112.9 in.
Overall width ..........................75.4 in.
Overall height at curb ..............52.7 in.
Track width
Front .......................................63.7 in.
Rear ........................................63.8 in.
Brakes
Brembo power 4-wheel disc with ABS and traction control Suspension
Front ............ This study is a one-off creation by Mercedes-Benz which revives the tradition of large luxury convertibles. Not having to work to a design brief or production specifications left the designers free to get on with the job of developing the world's most comfortable and elegant convertible.

The Concept Ocean Drive is an awe-inspiring jewel on wheels. As a four-door convertible, it belongs in a luxury genre that has almost disappeared from our roads. Like the luxury convertibles of years gone by, this showpiece from Stuttgart features the maximum in elegance, lifestyle sophistication and exclusiveness. To put it another way, it represents automobile culture at its most attractive and desirable.

The one-off special has an all-new body with an almost classic flavour and with clearly defined lines and vibrant two-tone paintwork which are exceptionally charismatic. Although on one level the Concept Ocean Drive displays the restraint of an elite and aristocratic automobile, it is also an open invitation to go on a "topless" cruise along the world's finest ocean promenades. Luxurious, exotic materials have been crafted with consummate skill to create a showpiece of unparalleled perfection.

Mercedes-Benz design studies a stylistic journey into the future

The Concept Ocean Drive isn't just designed to inspire dreams and fantasies; it also serves a very practical purpose. Because design studies are always a good opportunity for designers to play around with less familiar themes, to see things from new angles and to explore new ideas. Not just a pure design exercise, they are also a way of stimulating a closer dialogue with customers and of trying out new ideas on the general public. This helps the designers get a feel for future styling trends and to develop and implement new design idioms.

The unique luxury convertible design study from Stuttgart turns a "dream car" vision into reality. At the same time it is also an affirmation of the design excellence and values of the Mercedes-Benz brand, including the brand's traditional basic principles like excellent build and quality, comfort, effortless superiority, value retention and safety. These values have now been joined by three further key messages: passion, fascination and innovation. The Mercedes-Benz design philosophy both perpetuate proven styling themes associated with the brand and at the same time combines them with new and surprising ideas and forms.

Styling conveys effortless superiority and elegance

Apart from the four doors, the outward distinguishing marks of the concept car include a very large and upright radiator grille, LED headlamps and taillights, two-tone paintwork and a striking interplay between taut lines and large, restful surfaces. This lends the one-off special an air of effortless superiority, power, elegance and forward-flowing energy.

The long side-window opening which, typically of a convertible, is not interrupted by a B-pillar or window frames, ensures seamless continuity between the exterior and the interior, even when the top is up. Extensive use of high-value materials such as finest-quality leather, 3D-effect materials and large bird's eye maple trim panels (in the interior and even on the soft-top compartment cover) and many other thoughtfully designed interior details, highlight the luxurious, unique character of this design study.

Top-level engineering

The design study is based on the twelve-cylinder Mercedes-Benz S 600, on account of this model's long wheelbase. The technical highlights include:

the innovative soft-top mechanism resulting in smooth operation and fast closing times;

the innovative AIRSCARF neck-level heating system, which is featured on all four seats, allowing occupants to enjoy top-down motoring even in the colder months of the year.

Needless to say, the on-board equipment also includes top-level Mercedes-Benz innovations, some of which are unique worldwide including Brake Assist PLUS, the innovative PRE-SAFE brake system (in combination with radar-based DISTRONIC PLUS) and the PRE-SAFE anticipatory occupant protection system.

Source: Serious Wheels

Rinspeed Presents Ethereally Transparent Concept Car “eXasis”

Is it just a clever 3-D projection or maybe a mirage of a four-wheel art object? Or is it actually a real car sitting there? Some visitors to this year’s Geneva Auto Show (March 8th thru 18th) will ask themselves just these questions when faced with the new fully transparent Rinspeed creation “eXasis.” The insect-like body and even the floor pan of the seemingly “glass” concept car from the renowned Swiss powerhouse for new designs and ideas actually consist of a transparent high-tech plastic with a tinge of pale yellow.

The “eXasis” has open wheels, a cigar-shaped body with fore and aft tandem seating, and has elements of the legendary Auto Union race cars from the first half of the last century combined with a modern Baja-1000 off-road vehicle.

The transparency “dematerializes” the car to a large extent. Behind the seemingly fading matter the spirit of the “eXasis” reveals itself: The ideas, thoughts and imagination that were the basis of its development. For Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht the “eXasis” symbolizes this development process, a process that takes immaterial spirit and turns it into matter, transforms a mere vision into a concrete car: “And in all its transparency the “eXasis” still seems as if it hadn’t arrived fully yet in the material world.”

Definitely part of the material world is the engine of the concept car: A compact and powerful two-cylinder 750-cc engine provides some 150 environmentally friendly horsepower for swift conveyance. Bioethanol that reduces CO2 emissions powers the tiny supercharged engine. With a projected vehicle weight of just 750 kilograms thanks to plastic lightweight construction each horsepower has to account for just five kilograms - on a level with a Porsche.

Altogether these figures give plenty of reasons to expect of loads of driving fun and numerous visionary technologies and innovations from Rinspeed’s “eXasis.” A very special thrill will be the view through the transparent floor pan - it will be an absolutely unique anniversary ride.

Audi TT Coupe Debuts With Gentex Glare-Elimination Technology

Gentex Corporation, the leading supplier of automatic-dimming rearview mirrors to the worldwide automotive industry, announced today that it has begun shipping a three- mirror, automatic-dimming mirror system for the 2007 Audi TT Coupe.

The Gentex auto-dimming mirror system causes all three rearview mirrors to darken automatically in response to the headlamp glare of rearward-approaching vehicles. The brighter the glare, the darker the mirrors become, making nighttime driving safer.

The three-mirror system is optional on the TT and consists of an interior auto-dimming mirror with compass display and driver- and passenger-side exterior auto-dimming mirrors.

"Nearly 70 different vehicle models worldwide offer three-mirror auto- dimming systems, which provide complete glare elimination," said Enoch Jen, Gentex Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. "These systems represent one of the fastest-growing safety technologies available today. Is it just a TV fantasy? Actually, now is the best time of the year to get a good deal on a vehicle, says Ben Freeland, founder of the innovative online used car dealership auto2auto.com.

Here are eight important tips to keep in mind if you’re shopping for a vehicle this holiday season.

8. IT’S DEAL TIME: The new models have just come out, so pre-owned vehicles have just seen their largest drop in values for the year. The year-end is coming, yearly quotas are due, dealers need to reduce inventory, and business is relatively slow; so auto retailers will have their most aggressive prices, and the staff will have time to be attentive to your needs. Unlike other products that see their prices fall immediately after the holidays, now is the best time to get a good deal on a car.

7. JUST IN CASE: Just as you would with any other gift, make sure you keep the receipt and purchase the vehicle from a company that has a return policy in case the person you are giving the car to wants to exchange it.

6. BUY SMART: Consider buying a certified used vehicle instead of a new one. You will give that someone special all the benefits of a new car, for a much less expensive price. And you may want to move them into an upgraded model or add some features for the savings difference. For additional peace of mind, most certified vehicles come with warranty coverage beyond the manufacturer’s warranty.

5. MAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF: Buy from a dealership that makes the process easy. You don’t need to waste hours of time and get frustrated during the hectic holiday season. You should consider a No-Haggle pricing dealer, easy trade-in process, and financing options to fit your circumstances. There are more options than ever before to keep it simple.

4. SELECT THE RIGHT VEHICLE: Just as you would consider a person’s personality and sense of style when buying them a sweater or winter coat, think about the person you are buying the vehicle for. What do they like best about their current car; what do they like least? What cool features have you seen them take notice of in commercials or in other vehicles? Now, try to select a vehicle you think will work for them and excite them. You should buy from a dealer with a large selection so you don’t end up having to go all over town to find the right car.

3. SPECIAL DELIVERY: Have the dealer include a BIG red bow, then sneak the vehicle out and park it in a special place. Wrap the key in a jewelry box. You can always have the dealer hold the vehicle until you are ready for the big day. Some online dealers can even deliver to other states at no charge.

2. CAPTURE THE MOMENT: Be prepared to take a picture right when they figure out they received a car for Christmas. It will probably be a much better “reaction shot” than when they tasted Aunt Ethel’s fruitcake.

1. HAVE FUN: You should enjoy picking out the car as much as they will enjoy receiving it. Have a happy holiday season.

Source: www.theautochannel.com

Clean Diesel: The End of Clink! Clatter!! Clash!!! Smelly! Smokey!!

American’s look to Europe for many things – wine, food, fashion and, of course, automobiles – to name just a few. But one European automotive tradition has not made the journey to our shores: diesel engines for passenger vehicles.

Big, smoke belching 18 wheelers and heavy duty trucks? Yes. Cars? No! At least not yet, but wait … there’s more, much more automotive retailers need to know about what their showrooms will sell and their service areas will repair and service in the near future.

Diesel cars have not sold especially well in the U.S., except to the very, very environmentally concerned. R.L. Polk, a leading data compiler has noted sales of diesel vehicles are up some 40 percent to 543,777 units, but that only amounts to 3.4 percent of all cars sold in America. J.D. Powers and Associates is predicting diesel sales may triple to 10 percent by 2015.

There is a persistent disease in the U.S., known to the automotive psychological experts as “diesel knowledge deficiency.” It is a disease, which I hope to argue has severely disenfranchised the American consumer of high quality and ultra performance automobiles.

So, what’s the big deal about diesels?

Perhaps surprisingly to some, diesel engines, while invented and patented in 1892 by Rudolf Diesel, were not used in passenger vehicles until 1936 when Mercedes-Benz introduced the 260D, the world’s first production diesel car. Until then, diesel engines – which were big, bulky and difficult to start in cold weather – were used in heavy trucks, steamships, freighters and similar equipment.

After the war, technological improvements and innovations were added to the diesel by Mercedes and in the 1970’s large volume production of diesel-powered passenger cars commenced. Today, more than 50 percent of all vehicles sold in Europe are diesel-powered. Over half! In the U.S, just 3.4 percent.

Basic question: what makes a diesel different from the engine under the hood of most cars and light trucks in the America today?

Without resorting to a lot of tech-talk or a lengthy and possibly boring statement, it will suffice to say the diesel gets power faster without an electric sparkplug – it uses compression to ignite the fuel – and, thus, does not require a fuel with a high ignite or combustion factor. Admittedly, that is over-simplification, but when reviewed by a Mercedes-Benz person I was reassured, “That is accurate.” In fact, diesel engines are so flexible they can run on vegetable oil. If you don’t believe me, check out this video featuring movie diva Daryl Hannah who only drives biodiesel. For those who want a more comprehensive and understandable explanation and demonstration visit www.howthingswork.com or click here for a complete demonstration of how diesel engines work.

Generally, diesel engines are more effective, efficient, economical and, eventually, environmentally acceptable than the more familiar internal combustion engine. They get 20 to 30 percent better fuel economy, which results in roughly a 20 to 30 percent reduction in the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (C02) and hydrocarbon gases.

Why all the news, information and conversation about diesels now?

Many factors, facts and fallacies have contributed to diesel news: among them –the global warming phenomenon; state emissions controls and regulations; the soaring cost of oil per barrel and, subsequently, gas per gallon; lingering perceptions of diesel engines; more vehicles on the road; the depletion of natural resources; governmental action or inaction; court cases, including the U.S. Supreme Court case that opened this week, and Al Gore’s notwithstanding environmental concern.

In the U.S., stringent new regulations concerning the sulfur emissions – cleaner burning – from diesels in heavy trucks (when you’re behind an 18 wheeler with a heavy load at a stop light, a gas mask is a welcome accessory) resulted in a drastically lower sulfur composition in the formulization. These big trucks may be a reason why many equate the technology with older cars and light trucks powered by diesel engines – noisy, smelly, etc. Another factor has been the limited availability of diesel fuel at service stations. But this is also about to change.

Last month, 45,000 service stations in 45 states began selling the “new and improved, ultra low sulfur” diesel fuel in response to the government’s request for lower exhaust gas emissions. Not all stations have the new fuel and it will be “sometime” before the new fuel replaces the old, according to one source I spoke with.

The national average price of the new diesel fuel as this article is being written, according to the Energy Information Administration, stands at $2.567 per gallon compared to regular gasoline, which averages $2.246 per gallon. In 2009 – just three short years away – an even tougher, tighter fuel composition regulation will be instituted.

Additionally and significantly, this new diesel fuel formula has resulted in significant re-engineering for “cleaner” diesel engine-equipped cars destined to be sold in this country. Brands including VW and Volvo that sold diesel-equipped cars have stopped selling in the U.S., but perhaps not for long.

According to various sources on both sides of the Atlantic, every car manufacturer in the U.S. and Europe has been upgrading, improving and literally re-inventing cleaner diesel engines to comply with new government regulations on emissions and diesel fuel composition. They are considering the technology a viable alternative to traditional gas engines.

While Pacific Rim nations are not yet as stringent in national emission controls, car manufactures in Asia are also hard at work on new diesel-equipped vehicles since many produce for the U.S. market or eventually hope to do so. In nations with economies – namely, Brazil, Russia, India and China – a few steps have already been taken regarding emissions, but nothing is yet significant and auto production has not become a growing economic-industry factor... yet.

Who is leading the industry in diesel innovations and technology?

Mercedes-Benz, the first car manufacturer to produce a diesel-equipped passenger car over 70 years ago, is still the highly motivated leader in diesel inventions, innovations, and improvements.

The result of the company’s significant investments in time, people and resources appeared earlier this year at the North American International Automobile Show with the introduction of the BLUETEC diesel line. To borrow a phrase, “these are not your father’s diesels!”

A media release stated, “Mercedes-Benz is the pioneer of a new generation of clean and powerful high-tech vehicle s with highly effective exhaust gas treatment systems that give them the potential to fulfill the most stringent emission limits in the future.” And they are turbo powered too.

A few weeks ago Mercedes-Benz revealed the new passenger it was bring to America that are equipped with the new Bluetec diesel engines. The company has sold millions trucks in Europe equipped with the new engines, so they are tried and true.

Last month, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new E320 Bluetec sedan. It accelerates from 0 to 60 in just 6.6 seconds thanks to 400 pounds of torque and earns a significant 37 mpg highway/26mpg city. The E series will be joined by four other new-Bluetech diesel-powered vehicles next year as well.

The new 2007 models are not just fully compliant with new regulations, they set the benchmark for diesel engine technology that others will most definitely strive to emulate.

On the eve of the Los Angeles Motor Show DaimlerChrysler, Audi and Volkswagen announced that they intend to establish the BLUETEC brand name as the designation for particularly clean, highly fuel-efficient passenger cars and SUVs with diesel engines. Under the shared concept of BLUETEC, each of the manufacturers involved will be working on their own technical systems for meeting the world’s most stringent emission regulations.

Audi’s Winning ways

NASCAR rules in the U.S., but elsewhere in the world open-wheel racing is the favorite and is gaining fans in America too. This year, Audi shook the motorsports world to its high-tech-core with a record shattering 650 horsepower V12 TDI diesel-powered race car.

The diesel-powered R10 TDI race car won every major race it entered – the legendary 24 hours at Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring and the American endurance called Petit Le Mans Series – for a total of seven victories in a debut season. Along the way it was named Race Engine of the Year 2006, Alternative Race Engine of the Year, clinched the Manufacturers’ Championship and also won the Drivers’ and Teams’ titles.

At an exclusive event at the LA Auto Show, Audi revealed plans to introduce its diesel-powered vehicles in America. An Audi spokesperson informed me, “We will import diesel cars to the U.S. in 2008, but exactly when is to be determined.” Currently, Audi sells roughly 50 percent of its cars in Europe with diesel engines.

Recently, Audi premiered a world first twelve-cylinder diesel engine in a passenger car, the Q7. It is a six-liter, V12 generating, 500 horsepower and 738 ft-lbs of torque beast that is reminiscent of the engine featured in the winning Audi race car. Fast? 0 to 62 in 5.5 seconds with an electronically governed top end of 155 mph. Wow! Too bad it won’t be sold here … yet.

Honda’s on the Diesel-powered Bandwagon

John Mendel, senior vice president for American Honda Motor, noted confidence this summer when he said, “Our diesel technology will achieve our goal of crating new value in the market. Some have suggested this will be as important a breakthrough as the Civic CVCC was in being the first to meet the U.S. Clean Air Act in the early 1970’s.”

Mendel’s comments were followed late September by a release from Honda headquarters in Tochigi, Japan announcing the development of a “next-generation” diesel engine that reduces exhaust gas emissions to a level equal to a gasoline engine. The new engine uses a catalytic converter that enables a reduction in emissions sufficient to meet EPA requirements. The new diesel will be introduced within three years.

Toyota Is Not Resting On Its Laurels

As it turns out, Toyota is not merely focusing on hybrids. The company’s acquisition of 5.6 percent of Isuzu earlier this month for $375 million will give the auto giant access to more than 800 experienced diesel engineers at Isuzu and Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe has said he anticipates “the growth of diesel engines going forward.”

According to the auto blogosphere, Toyota has another ace up its sleeve. A Land Cruiser model with a powerful diesel V8 that has been seen testing in Europe, reportedly with a 4.5 liter engine, generates with twin turbo-chargers 268 hg and 470 ft-lbs of torque. Could this be a power plant for the new Tundra trucks coming out of the new San Antonio, Texas plant?

That’s a question I intend to ask next week at the reveal of the new Tundra. Stay tuned.

BMW Tells All About Their Diesel Plans

BMW too announced plans to bring diesels to the U.S. in late 2008. The German automaker has developed an enhanced concept for minimum exhaust gas emissions for this engine, which will meet the strict emissions standards in effect in California and other states. As a result, BMW will be able to simultaneously introduce these new cleaner Advanced Diesels as so-called 50 States (Bin5) models.

What’s Up In Detroit?

GM has been quiet about plans for its diesel engines, but announcements should be made soon. You can bet the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands will be among the first to establish a foothold with technology from its European divisions. And Ford has recently announced the development of a new regulation-compliant diesel engine.

Diesels bottom line?

Like the old movie title, The Diesels Are Coming. So, get ready. After years of literally ignoring diesel-powered vehicles, Americans will soon see more and more diesel cars and subsequently have the opportunity of benefiting from them.

The investment of countless millions of dollars, euros and yen from auto manufacturers throughout the world has resulted in a new generation of improved diesel engines … they’re stealth-like silent, efficient, environmentally equitable, and, of course, meet all the new government regulations.

Source: www.theautochannel.com

Nissan Sentra 2.0S Review

At first blush the restyled Sentra looks to be just a smaller version of its larger siblings, Altima and Maxima. The cab forward look that Chrysler pioneered years ago has become cab forward and rearward as exemplified with this Sentra. That is, the cabin, looks like it extends from mid-hood to mid-trunk. The A-pillar slopes steeply forward and the C-pillar, if extended in its logical conclusion would terminate at the rear bumper. The tail slopes distinctly forward and the nose is rounded nicely with large headlight sockets housing multi-reflector halogen lights. It looks distinctly Nissan.

Inside, the front-wheel-drive Sentra does not look like an economy car. It’s plenty roomy both front and back, though the trunk sure is shallow. Ingress and egress are easy. The modern shapes and forms inside do not reflect the traditional organic shapes common with most small cars. In fact, I find the dash and immediate surroundings to be mighty modern and aesthetically distinctive, attractively edgy in fact. Materials are better than expected. Fit and finish are up to high standards. No longer can even an economy car get away with anything less. In all regards I find it a good competitor to the Corolla - except in the engine category.

Sentra’s 2.0-liter, dual overhead-cam, in-line four-cylinder, rated at 140-hp and 147 lb-ft of torque, has the high tech qualities of the competitors but it sure is buzzy. On heavy throttle it makes more noise than the others and intrudes itself on the otherwise serene cabin. Gentle throttle effort is not so intrusive. Acceleration is adequate. Mileage is estimated by EPA to be 29 in the city and 36 highway on this 2,900-pound car, but the built-in data computer said we were getting 27.5 average. This is an Ultra-low Emissions rated engine/transmission combo.

This Sentra is equipped with the optional Xtronic CVT – continuously variable transmission. I would prefer the standard 6-speed stick but for an automatic you can’t beat the CVT for balance between economy and performance. On sustained full-throttle it’ll rev to within a few hundred rpm of red line and stay there as speed increases – rather slowly though I must say.

Handling is good, but nothing special. I wouldn’t try any tricks with it. Suspension is by independent struts in front and torsion beams (semi-independent) in the rear. Front vented disc and rear drums stop the car pretty well. Steering is electronic drive-by-wire. The chassis feels good and tight. After a bit less than a week with the Sentra we have nothing to complain about and nothing to brag about. It’s just a comfortable, competent car derived from a Renault platform. The few little niggles, like the ignition switch and shifter both of which have minor catches preventing consistent smooth operation, we’ll attribute to the pre-production status of this particular test car. Everything else worked and felt just fine.

The 2007 Sentra comes in three iterations: 2.0, 2.0 S and 2.0 SL. Price of entry for the 2.0 is $14,700 and includes 15-inch wheels, power windows and locks, AC with filter, AM/FM/CD with audio input jack and side-impact air bags. The 2.0S begins at $15,600 and adds 16-inch steel wheels, more speakers for the audio system, steering wheel controls, remote keyless entry, trip computer and height-adjustable driver’s seat. The 2.0 SL comes with the CVT, 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, intelligent keyless entry, Bluetooth hands-free compatibility and leather appointed seats.

Our 2.0 S test car also has the Rockford Fosgate ® audio package with XM satellite radio, CD-ROM with playback and 6-CD in-dash changer, Bluetooth, leather steering wheel, integrated overhead CD holder, special trunk cargo system, cruise with steering wheel controls, intelligent keyless entry, fog lights, 16-inch alloy wheels, ABS and electronic brake force distribution system. Bottom line on our sticker is $19,885.

Standard warranty coverage is 36 months/36,000 miles with powertrain covered for 5 years/60 months.

I guess my favorite aspect of the ’07 Sentra is the styling and design. It looks really great and would fit in to any upscale garage. If you’re out shopping for an economical little 4-door sedan you ought to have a look at this one.

© Steve Purdy, Shunpiker Productions, All Rights Reserved
From: www.theautochannel.com

Tech Tags: Automotive Auto Auto+Review Nissan

American Suzuki Plays to Win at 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show

To reinforce its commitment to providing fun-to-drive vehicles for lifestyle-driven consumers, American Suzuki Motor Corporation (ASMC) brings its "game face" to the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show, showcasing two exceptional activity-oriented concepts, and its full-line of versatile cars and SUVs, including the all-new XL7 midsize crossover SUV and the bold and functional SX4 compact X-over (crossover). After arriving at a campsite, a modern canopy with carbon fiber frame can be attached to the roof rack, keeping adventurers dry in inclement weather or protecting against the sun, and creating a welcoming ambiance for visitors.

The BaseCamp's interior reflects a similar high-tech design and feel with mica-hued light-toned seating and titanium accents throughout the inside of the vehicle. In the rear cargo area, the vehicle features a utility storage pack and access system. The Honda FCX Concept features a newly developed compact, high-efficiency Honda FC Stack as well as a low-floor, low-riding, short-nose body. It offers a comfortably large cabin and futuristic styling along with significant improvements in power output and environmental performance. Limited marketing of a totally new fuel cell vehicle based on this concept model is to begin in 2008 in Japan and the U.S.

To meet Honda objectives for significant gains in both environmental and driving performance, the Honda FCX Concept is equipped with a V Flow fuel cell platform consisting of a compact, high-efficiency fuel cell stack arranged in an innovative center-tunnel layout. This has allowed designers to create an elegant, low-riding, sedan form that would have been difficult to achieve in a conventional fuel cell vehicle. This new fuel cell stack is 20 percent smaller and 30 percent lighter than the current FCX FC Stack, yet its power output is 14kW greater. The drive motor has been positioned coaxially with the gearbox for a more compact design, with output increased by 15kW. Overall, the power plant is about 180kg lighter than that of the current FCX and about 40 percent smaller in volume. The result is improved energy efficiency and performance along with a more spacious interior.

While with previous fuel cell stacks the hydrogen and the water formed in electricity generation flowed horizontally, the new FCX Concept features vertical-flow design. This allows gravity to assist in discharging the water that is produced, resulting in a major improvement in water drainage, key to high-efficiency fuel stack performance. The result is stable power generation under a broad range of conditions, and higher output from a smaller package. Low-temperature startup has also been significantly improved, enabling cold-weather starts at temperatures 10 degrees C lower than the current FCX -- as low as minus 30 degrees C.

As an auxiliary power source, the FCX Concept carries a compact, high-efficiency lithium ion battery, contributing to increased power output and a more compact power plant. These efficiency improvements to major power plant components give the vehicle a travel range approximately 30 percent greater than the current FCX. The vehicle is also highly efficient, with an energy efficiency of around 60 percent -- approximately three times that of a gasoline-engine vehicle, twice that of a hybrid vehicle, and 10 percent better than the current FCX.

Other features include seat upholstery and door linings made from Honda Bio-Fabric, a plant-based material that offers outstanding durability and resistance to sunlight damage. Other improvements such as Shift-by-Wire and a newly designed instrument panel with easy-to-read display of hydrogen fuel consumption facilitate improved ease of operation.

The new fuel cell vehicle currently under development for release in 2008, will feature the principle technologies of the FCX Concept to achieve a new dimension in environmentally friendly driving pleasure not found with gasoline-engine vehicles.

* Specifications

Number of passengers 4

Max. If you wanted a convertible, you bought a convertible. If you wanted both, well, your garage had better hold two cars. Such was life with the first-generation Volvo C70, with a coupe introduced in 1998 and a convertible shortly thereafter. The C70 hinted at new directions for the Swedish automaker, both in style and intent. But in many ways it was the last of the old Volvos, as it was the last to debut before the current design language was unveiled in the 1998 S80.

The second-generation C70 holds the same position in the Volvo lineup as the first, and is two cars in one, as its three-piece steel roof can, with the touch of a button, disappear into the trunk, turning it from a coupe to a convertible. It holds four people, and there is still enough trunk space with the top down for a long weekend for two. Top-up, it can hold skis. It's equally handsome top-up or top-down, and both sporty and refined.

Introduced last year, the new C70 heads into its second year with only minor changes. The audio system now has an auxiliary input jack for an MP3 player or iPod, and the CD player has MP3CD playback capability. Sirius satellite radio is a new standalone option.

Power, 218 horses worth, is from Volvo's light-pressure turbocharged and intercooled version of its 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine, which drives the front wheels through a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. All of the safety equipment expected in a Volvo is standard, including a rollover protection system.

Safety and fun are not mutually exclusive, and the 2007 Volvo C70 offers a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience in addition to safety. It's also a practical year-round car, as the steel top insulates passengers from the elements as well as that of any hardtop when the weather turns foul. My week with the C70 was typical of Fall, with a mix of cool sunshine and cold rain. No problem there, the car was pleasant top-down when the sun was out, and snug and dry come rain. It's a fine sport-luxury coupe, and a fine sport-luxury convertible, all in one package.

APPEARANCE: If, with the original C70 Volvo first "threw away the box and kept the toy", the toy is further-developed in its second generation. With its strong, broad shoulder line, protruding V-shaped hood, and small rounded-trapezoid grille there can be little doubt as to the maker. All of the contemporary Volvo styling cues are prominently displayed on a car that is slightly lower, shorter, and wider than the old model. With the top disappearing into the trunk space, the new C70's lines and proportions are clean and stylish with the top up or down.

COMFORT: In its interior style, the C70 owes more to the smaller S40 and V50 than any other current Volvo thanks to the aluminum-faced free-standing center console. It looks like a piece of high-end Scandinavian audio equipment, and established the "Scandinavian modern" design motif - visually simple, relaxing, and functional. The seats are a little different from those in other Volvos, but just as comfortable, with power adjustment in front and, for a coupe, generous rear room. The standard covering material is an interestingly-textured synthetic called "Haverdal Flextech", with leather inserts. The top is raised and lowered in about 30 seconds with the touch of a button, no manual latching or unlatching necessary. Top-up, the C70 is as snug and quiet as any other sport-luxury coupe; top-down there is just enough wind for a pleasant experience, with minimal buffeting. Despite the top being stored in the trunk, there is a useful six cubic feet with the top down, and a useful divider with safety interlocks acts as a template for top-down storage. The stowed top can be moved upwards about eight inches for luggage access. Top-up, there is a generous 12.8 cubic feet of trunk space, with a ski passthrough.

SAFETY: The C70 features all of Volvo's safety systems, with modifications to compensate for its lack of a fixed roof. Hydroformed A-pillars made of extra-high strength steel and the Roll-Over Protection System (ROPS) electronically-controlled pop-up roll bars normally hidden behind the rear seats provide structural protection in the even of a rollover. To further compensate for the lack of a permanent top and full-height B-pillars for side protection, the lower B-pillars and floor structure have been modified, as has the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), with a door-mounted side curtain in addition to the front and side front-seat airbags. The car's structure is designed to progressively deform in a collision from any direction to protect passengers. Strong four-wheel antilock disc brakes with emergency brake assist and the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system (DSTC) add active safety.

RIDE AND HANDLING: Volvo has been working on suspension calibration and refinement, to good effect. The C70's unibody structure is based on Volvo's mid-size P1 platform, and has commendable rigidity even with the top down; with the top in place it's even better. The fully-independent MacPherson strut front, multilink rear suspension is tuned perfectly for the car's sport-touring mission, firm enough for minimal body motion in hard maneuvering, yet supple enough for long-distance comfort. Steering effort is moderate and appropriate.

PERFORMANCE: Every U.S.-spec C70 comes in T5 trim, named after the turbocharged and intercooled five-cylinder engine. It's a long-stroke, twin-cam, 20-valve aluminum alloy design in a moderate state of tune. If its ultimate power - 218 bhp at 5000 rpm - is less than the old C70 coupe's R-spec 236, it's much more useful in everyday driving. Unlike the R, which had all the urge concentrated at the top, this engine has a broad spread of power. Maximum torque, 236 lb-ft, is developed from 1500 through 4800 rpm, nearly the entire useful powerband. With that sort of midrange, downshifting is pretty much optional when acceleration is wanted. But when it is time to shift, the six-speed gearbox is a pleasure to use, with light, progressive clutch action and fine shift linkage. The optional automatic should have a minimal effect on performance. I averaged 21 mpg in fast highway and city driving.

CONCLUSIONS: The Volvo C70 convertible coupe is two very fine cars in one.

SPECIFICATIONS 2007 Volvo C70

Base Price $ 39,090
Price As Tested $ 40,780
Engine Type dual overhead cam turbocharged
and intercooled 20-valve
inline 5-cylinder
Engine Size 2.5 liters / 154 cu. in.
Horsepower 218 @ 5000 rpm
Torque (lb-ft) 236 @ 1500-4800 rpm
Transmission 6-speed manual
Wheelbase / Length 103.9 in. / 180.4 in.
Curb Weight 3,743 lbs.
Pounds Per Horsepower 17.2
Fuel Capacity 16.4 gal.
Fuel Requirement 91 octane unleaded premium gasoline
Tires P235/40 ZR18 Pirelli P-Zero Rosso
Brakes, front/rear vented disc / disc, ABS and EBD standard
Suspension, front/rear independent MacPherson strut /
independent multilink
Drivetrain transverse front engine,
front-wheel drive

PERFORMANCE
EPA Fuel Economy - miles per gallon
city / highway / observed 20 / 29 / 21
0 to 60 mph 7.0 sec

OPTIONS AND CHARGES
18-inch wheels and tires $ 995
Destination charge $ 695

Tech Tags: Automotive Auto Car+Review Volvo

Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT Review

Driving the 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT can be summed up in one word – FUN. This is not a family car; this is not even a practical car. This is the reward you give yourself for reaching a crowning achievement – professional or personal. It was Cyndi Lauper who sang Girls Just Wanna Have Fun; she must have been thinking about driving a convertible with the top down on a sunny day, the radio blaring and the feeling of freedom behind the wheel! I’ve just described the driving experience of a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT.

With a powered convertible top, the car transforms electronically from a closed vehicle into an open-aired exhilarating ride. Sporting a cloth top, versus the vinyl most often equipped in this price range, the top fits flushed and snugly inside a tonneau, giving the car a first-class, sporty look. Totally powered and automatic, by unlocking the release handles located inside and pushing the “open” switch located on the dash, the transformation completes itself in just 19 seconds. This includes the audio system automatically readjusting to the open air setting.

Returning the car to a closed vehicle is equally easy; place the car in “park” and then just push the “close” button. The top is specifically designed to eliminate ballooning at highway speed. The defroster system is located in the rear window.

The car seats four but most comfortably, it is a ride for two. Driver side is power and manually controlled, while the passenger side is manual. With lumbar support, premium sport fabric and leather heated front seating, driving comfort can be customized in a variety of ways.

Another great feature enhancing the driving experience is the 650-watt Rockford Fosgate audio with Digital Signal Processing. The 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT comes fully equipped with a 6-CD in-dash changer and is MP3 compatible. Nine speakers, including an integrated 8” rear subwoofer, will keep your driving atmosphere lively and entertaining.

The interior features do not stop there. The dash hosts a center display providing compass readings, audio modes, outside temperature and time. Also located in the center dash are the audio selections, CD-Changer, seat warming and automatic climate control system; all within convenient and safe arm-reach. Some of the models are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) including an advanced airbag safety system, adding security to the ride. The SRS system has front air bags, side air bags and a curtain air bag, which is designed to only deploy on the side receiving the impact.

There is extra storage sections located throughout the front seat area. A spacious glove compartment, an extra compartment between the driver and passenger seats, and a two-cup holder all provide space for storing the little things that are important for having in your car. With a split fold-down rear seat, the trunk opens up providing space for the bigger items requiring transportation.

The car is good looking on the outside too, and definitely gets its share of second glances from others! Sporting a sleek look including 17-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels, auto-off halogen headlights, LED tail lamps and monocle-lens head lamps, the coupe promotes an expensive first impression. The 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT offers all the special features a sports-car enthusiast seeks, but at an affordable price starting at $25,000.

With a 260-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 engine, the car has an impressive “get up and go”. Available in a five-speed automatic or standard six-speed manual transmission, with the standard, the Spyder GT can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in approximately seven seconds. Armed with an anti-theft alarm system and remote keyless entry, these features greatly increase a woman’s sense of security.

The coupe is a fun ride and could be “just what the doctor orders”, when it comes to a prescription for stress-relief! One piece of advice - leave it in the garage when it rains; the convertible top drips into the car when you open the door. But when the sun comes out, there is no better way to get around town than in the 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT and listening to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

Tech Tags: Automotive Auto Auto+News Mitsubishi

Bentleys Arrive at UK Flagship Showroom

The British motoring legend, Bentley, has substantially increased its presence in the West Midlands following the completion of a state-of-the-art showroom at Fort Dunlop. Bentley Birmingham arrived at the new development in classic style with an extremely rare £3 million convoy of the iconic cars turning heads as they weaved round the Spitfire roundabout and rolled into their new home.

Bentley Birmingham has invested over £5 million in the move which now sees the city hosting one of the most prestigious showrooms anywhere in the UK and Europe. Mark Hudson, general manager of Bentley Birmingham, comments:

“We wanted to offer a showpiece dealership for the city and the region and that is exactly what we have achieved. Following the success of our business at Willenhall we have been able to invest in the new and improved site and we are delighted with the result. We can now offer an even better environment to view and experience these British cars and we are also extremely proud to have contributed to the development of the famous Fort Dunlop site.”

Mark added that the decision to further expand Bentley Birmingham’s presence was made possible by the popularity of cars like the Continental GT and Continental Flying Spur, which have both attracted a strong following in the city and West Midlands region.

“The move provides the capacity to grow the business in the future and, to ensure we continue to meet the demands of customers, a number of further local employment opportunities will be created, including an apprenticeship scheme which we hope to introduce in the near future.”

The arrival of Bentley at Fort Dunlop signals yet another new chapter in the incredible success story of the British marque which celebrates 60 years of manufacture at Crewe this year. Bentley goes from strength to strength, throughout the UK and globally too and the recent investment in Birmingham follows a substantial period of investment at the company’s Crewe factory. Since 1998 Bentley Motors has been revitalised with around £500m of inward investment, in new models, production equipment and skilled staff.

It has re-engineered its luxury grand-tourer, the Arnage, launched a stunning all-wheel-drive, 198mph coupe, the Continental GT, and followed this up in 2005 with the world’s fastest four-door production car, the Continental Flying Spur. Nor has the pace slackened since: 2006 has witnessed the launch of two critically acclaimed convertibles; a bespoke stablemate to the Arnage, to revive the Bentley Azure name; and a drop-top addition to the Continental family, the Continental GTC.

In addition to the iconic British cars the showroom will also be one of only four official Lamborghini dealerships in the UK. Customers throughout the West Midlands will be able to browse the legendary Italian manufacturer’s full range of sports cars, including the breathtaking new Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder.

Tech Tags: Automotive Auto Auto+News Bentley

Honda Concept Car Shines Brightly at Los Angeles Auto Show

Styling Concept Mixes Sports Car Attitude With Everyday Functionality

The Honda REMIX small sport concept vehicle made its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. The third Design Challenge asked studios to form their vision of the future by creating a vehicle that is environmentally aware of its global footprint. From a field of eight automaker design studios, GM's Hummer 02 was chosen for its thought provoking, diverse, holistic concept design.

Powered by a fuel cell, the Hummer 02 is envisioned to "breathe" through a revolutionary phototropic body shell that produces pure oxygen throughout the lifespan of the vehicle. Algae-filled body panels transform harmful CO2 into pure oxygen that is subsequently released back into the environment.

"Our goal was to develop a concept that will replace the carbon footprint of automobiles. Our Finnish designer came up with an idea based around a photosynthesis cell and the whole team worked together to develop the concept," said Frank Saucedo, head designer General Motors Advanced Design. "This is a great competition for our young designers and we look forward to participating each year."

Entries were judged by multi-discipline design professionals who selected the winner for its originality of creative concept, contribution to the environment, degree of safety and reflection of a unique, spirited California "green" lifestyle.

"We were overwhelmed by the depth of imagination and creative thinking these top design studios created for this year's challenge," said Chuck Pelly, director of Design Los Angeles and partner in The Design Academy. "Hummer 02 was chosen because of the wide-range of known technologies included, but with an imaginative twist, such as the tread "light" tire technology. GM's vehicle has an approachable view of the future," said Pelly.

The purpose of the Design Challenge is to pit the manufacturers' Los Angeles-based design studios against one another. This year, studios were challenged to imagine a time when all vehicles have "green" technology allowing drivers to enjoy the Southern California environment without harming it. Designers enjoy participating in the challenge because it is a strong venue to showcase their talents and further explore new ideas in automotive design. In the past, participating studios have received impressive amounts of worldwide exposure among peers and media.

The Design Challenge is a part of Design Los Angeles, which began at the 2005 LA Auto Show and has become an important part of the show. Design Los Angeles is a one day symposium where workshops, speakers and other opportunities are provided to designers in the automotive industry.

Being that Los Angeles is home to a majority of the design studios representing automakers in North America, Europe and Asia, as well as the Art Center College of Design, one of the world's leading transportation design centers, Design Los Angeles has become an integral component in designers' ongoing development.

The world's automobile companies will be stepping forward with a number of production and concept vehicle world debuts to help usher in "A New Beginning" for the Los Angeles Auto Show. The theme conveys the increased national and international stature due to the show's earlier dates. The new dates give the show its own time period on the international auto show calendar, thereby resolving a 25-year-old conflict with the auto show in Detroit.

Tech Tags: Automotive Auto Auto+News Hummer

Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Spec B Sedan Review

DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD
WITH CAREY RUSS

2007 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Spec B Sedan

What happens to a Subaru WRX when it grows up? It becomes a Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Spec B.

The Spec B's introduction last year as a limited-production model must have been successful, as it returns for 2007 as a full production model. And it gets a few new features as well, most significantly the "Subaru Intelligent Drive" (hereafter referred to as SI-Drive) driver-configurable engine management and throttle control system, a six-speed manual gearbox, and a new audio system that plays MP3 and WMA CDs and has an auxiliary input jack for MP3 players or iPods. The interior is trimmed in sporty blue Alcantara¨, looking just like a WRX, and the car comes equipped with just about every option in the Subaru catalog.

The namesake 2.5-liter engine is a close relative to that in the WRX STi, and even closer relative to what's now found in the regular WRX. If its 2007-spec 243 horsepower and 241 lb-ft of torque ratings seem a little less than the previous 250 and 250, they aren't. Subaru has revised its power measurement calibration to be more conservative. It's the same engine found in the Legacy 2.5 GT Limited, but in the Spec B it's matched to a six-speed, not five-speed gearbox, and, fitting its performance flagship status, no automatic is available. All four wheels are driven all the time - this is a Subaru, after all.

External differences between the Spec B and Limited are minimal, but underneath there are significant suspension modifications. Aluminum control arms, a revised suspension tuning and Bilstein shocks, and 18-inch wheels with 45-profile tires give a firmer ride and sharpen the cornering response for a chassis tuning very similar to the standard WRX, not the take-no-prisoners STi.

I found that to be quite reasonable, and totally appropriate for the Spec B's wonderful engine and drivetrain during my week with one. It's very much a larger WRX in its setup and demeanor, but just a touch softer and with more soundproofing for a more civilized driving experience. It's not quite "luxury" in its appointment level, but no complaints there - too many one-time sports sedans have softened into "luxury semi-sport" over the years. Call the Legacy Spec B "sports-comfort" and get out of its way.

APPEARANCE: "Conservative" is the operative word in the Spec B's styling. Understated, it's the opposite of a WRX STi. Nothing about its looks loudly proclaims "high performance", but the hints are there for those who know. The functional hood scoop is lacking on the naturally-aspirated Legacy 2.5i models, but is shared with other 2.5 GTs, as they also share the turbo engine. It's small, and barely rises above the gently-sculpted hood line. The headlights and lower front bumper fascia are no different than on the regular Legacy models, and side sill extension is minimal. All Legacy sedan models share large taillights and twin exhausts. Larger, 18-inch, wheels with low-profile tires are most notable exterior difference between the Spec B and other GT models.

COMFORT: With blue suede-like Alcantara for its main seating surfaces, the Spec B's interior looks very WRX-like. There's nothing wrong with that, or with the comfort and support of its well-bolstered (in leather), power-adjustable and heated front sports seats, either. Add in the thick leather-rimmed MOMO steering wheel, aluminum-trimmed pedals (including footrest), moonroof, and bright, easily-visible backlit instruments, and the driver has a fine office from which to enjoy life on the road. The front passenger gets the same accommodation, while rear passengers get more space than in a smaller Impreza WRX. The rear seat is split 60/40 and folds for cargo ability if necessary. The Spec B's interior noise level is noticeably lower than the WRX's. The Subaru navigation system dominates the top of the center stack. It uses a simple touch-screen interface, which also incorporates fuel, trip, and maintenance reminder functions, and a handy calculator with metric-English conversion. The audio and climate systems are controlled separately, for further simplicity. The high-grade audio system includes a 6-disc in-dash CD changer that plays MP3 and WMA discs as well as commercial CDs, AM, FM, and, optionally, XM satellite radio, and there is a jack in the center console box for an MP3 player or iPod. There is a power point placed conveniently next to that jack. The Spec B's interior design may not be as luxurious as some similarly-priced European competitors, but it is much more functional.

SAFETY: The Subaru Legacy has received a "Top Safety Pick, Gold" rating from the IIHS and a five-star rating for frontal crash protection from NHTSA. Full-time all-wheel drive and, in the Spec B, powerful four-wheel ventilated antilock disc brakes and the Vehicle Dynamics Control system contribute to active safety, while the "Ring Frame Reinforced" body structure, incorporating a strong central safety cage and front and rear crumple zones, and standard dual-stage front, front side, and side curtain airbags contribute to passive safety.

RIDE AND HANDLING: If there are few external differences between the Spec B and its Legacy brethren, there are plenty of differences in its chassis. Although the basic architecture of all Legacys is the same, a unibody structure with a fully-independent suspension by MacPherson struts in front and a multilink system in the rear, the Spec B has stiffer springs with matching Bilstein shocks, and aluminum replaces steel for the most of the front and rear control arms to reduce unsprung weight and improve suspension response. The standard Legacy GT's 17-inch wheels are replaced with 18s, shod with low-profile summer performance tires. The steering is quickened a bit. The ride is firm, but not at all uncomfortable, in the classic sport-luxury sedan manner, and cornering behavior is very good. All-wheel drive, with a viscous-coupling locking center differential ensures optimum traction in all situations. The GT's limited-slip rear differential is upgraded to a Torsen unit for improved side-to-side torque distribution. The Spec B is the real deal in an all-wheel drive performance sedan.

PERFORMANCE: The Spec B uses the same WRX STi-derived 2.5-liter turbocharged and intercooled aluminum alloy twincam, 16-valve flat-four engine as the regular Legacy GT, with variable valve timing and 243 horsepower (at 6000 rpm) and 241 lb-ft of torque (at 3600 rpm). But instead of a five-speed manual or automatic transmission, it's hooked up to a six-speed manual, developed from the one in the STi. Closer ratios allow less of an rpm drop between shifts, improving acceleration. Acceleration is further aided by lower final drive gearing, but not so low as to seriously affect fuel economy. Its 0-60 time of just over five seconds would have put it in supercar territory not long ago. Power gets to the ground efficiently thanks to the all-wheel drive system. New this year, and shared with the Legacy 2.5 GT Limited and Outback 2.5 XT Limited models, is SI-Drive. SI-Drive is integrated into the engine control computer, and allows three driver-selectable engine modes. "I" (Intelligent) mode reduces power output about 20 percent and has a more relaxed throttle response. It's meant for use on low-traction surfaces, and in stop-and-go commute driving. "S" (Sport) mode is the default, with the same response as in 2006 models. It allows full power and a moderate throttle response. "S#" (Sport sharp) doesn't actually increase power, but feels like it as it remaps the electronic throttle for notably quicker response, so less right foot movement means more go. I kept the switch in that position most of the time, kept my foot in it as much as possible, and still managed a 21 mpg average for fuel consumption.

CONCLUSIONS: With its Legacy Spec B, Subaru has created a WRX for grownups.

SPECIFICATIONS

2007 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Spec B sedan

Base Price $ 33,995
Price As Tested $ 35,118
Engine Type horizontally-opposed turbocharged
and intercooled
dual overhead cam 4-cylinder
Engine Size 2.5 liters / 150 cu. in.
Horsepower 243 @ 6000 rpm

Torque (lb-ft) 241 @ 3600 rpm
Transmission 6-speed manual
Wheelbase / Length 105.1 in. / 186.2 in.
Curb Weight 3515 lbs.
Pounds Per Horsepower 14.5
Fuel Capacity 16.9 gal.

Fuel Requirement 91 octane premium unleaded gasoline
Tires 215/45 YR18 Bridgestone Potenza RE050A
Brakes, front/rear vented disc all around,
ABS, EBD, VDC standard
Suspension, front/rear independent MacPherson strut /
independent multi-link
Drivetrain longitudinal front engine,
all-wheel drive

PERFORMANCE

EPA Fuel Economy - miles per gallon
city / highway / observed 19 / 26 / 21
0 to 60 mph 5.1 sec

OPTIONS AND CHARGES
Wheel lock set $ 42
XM Satellite radio kit $ 456
Destination and delivery $ 625

Tech Tags: Automotive Auto Auto+Review Subaru

Honda and Toyota Models Rank Highest in Initial Quality in a Total of Six Segments

- Importance of Design Highlights Changing Consumer Expectations About Vehicle Quality

Honda and Toyota combined garner six initial quality model awards in the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 South Africa Initial Quality Study(SM) (IQS) released today.

A customer-driven measure of problems experienced during the first three to seven months of ownership, the South Africa Initial Quality Study has been completely redesigned for 2006 to more precisely monitor consumer attitudes toward quality.

The study examines 228 individual problem symptoms across nine categories: vehicle exterior; the driving experience; features/controls/displays; audio/entertainment/navigation; seats; heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); vehicle interior; engine/transmission; and other problems. All problems are identified as the number reported per 100 vehicles (PP100), with lower scores indicating fewer problems and therefore better quality.

"Continued quality improvements have caused consumers to focus increasingly more attention on soft quality issues, or vehicle design-related problems, rather than solely on a more traditional view of quality characterized by defects and malfunctions," said Brian Walters, senior director of J.D. Power and Associates Europe, Middle East and Africa operations.

To facilitate a deeper analysis, IQS problem symptoms have been further classified to two dimensions: defects/malfunctions and design-related problems. Nameplates with the fewest defects/malfunctions include Audi, BMW, Honda, Mercedes-Benz and Subaru. Those with the fewest design-related problems include Audi, Daihatsu, Honda, Subaru, Toyota and Volvo.

"To satisfy owners and fully understand consumer perceptions of quality, manufacturers must consider both dimensions of vehicle quality," said Walters. "For instance, BMW models, along with those from Honda and Mercedes-Benz, have among the fewest defects/malfunctions. Yet, BMW's approach to features/controls/displays often creates some problems for customers, which ultimately contributes to more overall design-related anomalies when compared with Honda and Mercedes-Benz."

2006 IQS Ranking Highlights

With 150 PP100 (combined defects/malfunctions and design-related problems), Honda retains its position as the highest-ranking passenger vehicle nameplate. BMW ranks second (154), followed by Mercedes-Benz (157), Subaru (166) and Audi (169). Hyundai, Toyota, Kia, Chevrolet and Daihatsu round out the top 10 passenger vehicle nameplates.

Toyota is the highest-ranked pickup truck nameplate at 202 PP100, followed by Isuzu (267).

Registering fewer problems than any other model in the industry, Toyota's RAV4 (compact SUV) is one of four Toyota models to receive IQS awards. The Tazz (upper compact car), Hilux Single Cab (one-ton single cab pickup) and Hilux Double Cab (one-ton double cab pickup) also rank highest in their respective segments. Honda's Civic ranks highest in the upper small car segment, while its Jazz is one of the top-performing models in the industry and has lead the lower small car segment in initial quality for three consecutive years.

Other models leading their respective segments in initial quality are the Hyundai Atoz (lower compact car), Volkswagen Touran (compact MPV), the Opel Corsa Utility (compact pickup), and the BMW 3 Series, which has been the top-performing medium car for three consecutive years.

Assembly Plants

Vehicle assembly plants are ranked based solely on the number of defects and malfunctions. BMW's Rosslyn plant leads other South African plants in initial quality for a third consecutive year with 88 PP100. DaimlerChrysler's passenger vehicle plant, which produces the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, follows with 104 PP100, while Toyota's Durban truck line, which produces the Toyota Hilux pickup, ranks third with 155 PP100.

J.D. Power and Associates is recognised across the globe as the leading independent authority on consumer-reported quality in the automotive industry. The firm's primary role is to help automotive manufacturers further improve their product quality and service levels through a better understanding of consumers. J.D. Power and Associates also provides its study results to consumers for use as a reference point when purchasing a new vehicle.

Since its launch in the United States in 1987, the IQS has become a quality standard used by virtually every automotive manufacturer around the world. In addition to South Africa, J.D. Power and Associates conducts vehicle quality research in many other markets, including China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Each year, more than 1 million new-vehicle buyers around the world receive a J.D. Power and Associates IQS survey.

The 2006 South Africa Initial Quality Study is based on a representative sample of more than 9 600 new-vehicle owners who purchased their vehicles between December 2005 and April 2006. The survey was funded entirely by J.D. Power and Associates as a part of its global research programs and included a section of questions to assist the Department of Transport in measuring the performance of its vehicle licensing programme.

Initial Quality Nameplate Ranking -- Passenger Vehicles
The boutique shop sells Ferrari accessories at the Alfardan Automotive Center. It's the first store of its kind in the Middle East, which has continued to grow as a leading market for Maranello's finest. Similar to the store at The Wynn in Las Vegas, the Qatar store has clothes, shoes, toys, keychains and other accessories, all bearing the Ferrari logo.

Alfardan Automotive President Omar Alfardan told reporters that the store made sense as Ferrari is a huge draw anywhere in the world. He also said he expects to open more of these shops in Qatar in the future, including one in the Alfardan Towers and another in the multi-billion-dollar, man-made island off the Doha coast, the Pearl-Qatar.

Ferrari currently has several stores in Italy as well as shops in Hangzhou and Shanghai, as well as the one in Vegas.

[Source: autoblog.com]

Tech Tags: Automotive Auto Auto+News Ferrari

BMW M6 Coupe Review

SPECIFICATIONS
MODEL: BMW M6 Coupe
ENGINE: 5-liter DOHC V10
HORSEPOWER/TORQUE: 500 hp @ 7750 rpm/383 lb.-ft. @ 6100 rpm
TRANSMISSION: 7-speed sequential manual gearbox
WHEELBASE: 109.4 in.
LENGTH/WIDTH/HEIGHT: 190.2 x 73.0 x 54.1 in.
TIRES: 255/40 ZR19 (front)/285/35 ZR 19 (rear)
CARGO VOLUME: 13.0 cu. ft.
FUEL ECONOMY: 12 m pg city/18 mpg highway
STICKER: $106,690 (includes $695 destination and delivery charge and $3,000 gas guzzler tax)

Assets: Beautiful automobile with great gobs of power and the handling to go along with it.

Debits: The price, unfortunately. The trunk could be larger.

Several manufacturers have their “skunk works” where they develop high-performance versions of their standard road cars. Mercedes-Benz has AMG, Cadillac has the v-versions of some of its sportier cars, and even Chevrolet has “SS” badged versions of just about every car it markets.

Likewise, BMW offers M versions of some of its cars. The M designation means the car has been tuned to create a higher-performance engine, with a sportier suspension and often a different transmission. In some cases, there are engines available in the M cars that you can’t get in the non-M versions of the same car.

Such is the situation with the M6 Coupe, the hotted-up version of BMW’s stunning 6-Series Coupe. The M6 is powered by a V10 engine that develops 500 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque, much more than the standard car. All this comes at a price, of course, but even the “normal” 6-Series is far from bottom-of-the-line.

I’m one of those people who thinks the BMW 6-Series is one of the more beautiful automobiles that esteemed company has built. It, like most coupes, has great proportions and is, to me, the epitome of what a BMW should look like. Sure, the more prosaic 3- and 5-Series must be practical because they are the bread-and-butter cars, but the 6 is to be loved and adored.

With that in mind, I salivated when they handed me the keys to my own M6. Technically, of course, it wasn’t my own. I also had to share it with another journalist in the rolling hills north of Milwaukee, but it was worth the sharing.

The 500 hp V10 engine purred, no matter how hard we flogged it. Fortunately, the gendarmes weren’t in force that day, because we pushed the big round speedometer into triple digits on roads that had half that as a speed limit. I’ll confess I was speeding, but in a car like the M6 that isn’t driving dangerously. The car is solid and has a suspension designed to keep the driver and passengers safe, no matter what kind of road is encountered.

We proved this further later in our test day when we hit the track at Road America, one of the country’s premier road-racing facilities. My instructor/co-driver for my “hot laps” kept complimenting me on how smoothly I was driving and how well I was hitting the apexes of the corners. Heck, it wasn’t me; it was the M6. It’s the kind of car that can make anyone look like an experienced race driver.

But the M6 isn’t just about breaking speed limits or driving on a race track. It’s a solid coupe that can take you from point A to point B in style and comfort. While the standard 6-Series coupe or convertible can also perform this relatively simple act with equal style and panache, the M6 does it with the underlying feeling that, if you want to, you can be very naughty.

The seats in the M6 are leather-faced and offer excellent side support. Again, a good part of the reason for being able to drive on the track with such assurance is the fact that the M6 molds to your body so well. You grip a fat leather-covered steering wheel that keeps you in control of the car with great ease. I loved BMW’s new progressive steering. I kept my hands at the 10 and 2 o’clock positions for the entire ride, and never had to shuffle them around when I came to tighter corners. On the track, of course, with higher speeds and tighter corners there was a need to shift my hands, but not often and not by much.

The M6 is definitely a driver’s car.

There are some unfortunate compromises with the M6, compromises that you run into with most coupes. The trunk is tiny at 13 cubic feet. Sure, it’s about right for a compact car, but when you’re headed out for a trip of any length in a car like this, your wife will most certainly want to take along all her best clothes and shoes. So a larger trunk would be helpful. And it is simply too small for golf clubs. It’d be great if there was room for two sets, so you could impress your partner, but cramming one bag back there is tough.

But I’m carping. If you aren’t scared by the over-$100,000 sticker, and if you’re interested in a high-performance car that won’t set you back by 50 percent more than that, then the M6 might be the vehicle for you. It has a limited audience, but that audience can also consider itself very lucky.

Very lucky.

© 2006 The Auto Page Syndicate

Tech Tags: Automotive Auto Auto+News BMW

Lexus RX 400h 5 Door SUV

A few years ago our friends at Lexus loaned us an RX 300 for a road trip to Tennessee. Ever since then my pretty blonde has wanted one. She was enamored with the looks, feel, luxurious ambiance, and the comfort and convenience inside. She even looked for a used one when her trusty old Reatta was aging, but the RX 300 held its value so well that even the used ones cost nearly as much as a new one. I know many readers needn’t be as frugal as we, so perhaps the price is not such a big deal. Even considering the formidable price the Lexus vehicles we’ve evaluated all give a good value.

Based loosely on the Camry car platform the RX series is really a crossover (CUV), rather than what we think of as an SUV. The traditional SUV is on a truck platform, usually a body-on-frame. The RX, built on a welded steel unibody structure, was one of the first CUVs.

The lovely Millennium Silver RX 400h hybrid test vehicle in our driveway this week shows a base price of $42,580. Base price on the RX 350 (not a hybrid) is about $37,400, so we’re paying about 5-grand extra for the dual power unit. That base price includes the hybrid drive system, of course, and on-demand all-wheel-drive, electric rack-and-pinion steering, 4-wheel disc brakes (fronts are vented), 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, full-size spare, 8 airbags, adjustable smart seat belts with pretensioners, 4-sensor, 4-channel ABS with EBD (electronically controlled brake force distribution), regenerative braking, automatic headlights, dual-zone climate control, premium audio system, 10-way power drivers and passenger seats, power rear hatch door, auto-dimming power heated outside mirrors, manual tilt and telescoping leather, wood and brushed aluminum steering wheel, 7-inch LCD screen for control functions, and carpeted floor mats. What more could we need, you might ask.

Well, let’s look at the options our test car: a DVD rear entertainment system, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels (17-inch are standard), heated front seats, the Premium Plus Package which includes leather seats, power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, memory setting functions for the driver, moon roof, roof rack, and HID headlights. It also has a towing package with transmission cooler and wiring harness, and the very expensive voice-activated navigation and monitoring system, wood steering wheel, cargo mat and wheel locks and back-up camera. That’s about 10-grand worth of options making our Lexus sticker out at $52,166.

We have a good opportunity to test the Lexus this week as we’re traveling to Chicago for a weekend with some youngsters – my daughter and son-in-law – who are dedicated city dwellers. The hybrid’s forte, of course, is maximizing efficiency in city traffic because of the ability to run on electricity at low speeds. Suspension is of conventional design, independent front and rear, with struts, coil springs, gas-charged shocks and stabilizer bars. The ride is smooth and sophisticated, meaning that not a hint of harshness or sloppiness intrudes on the luxurious ride. Steering is electronic, vehicle speed-sensing power assisted rack-and-pinion with good on-center feel.

The fuel economy estimates are for 31 mpg city and 27 highway. We’re observing about 23.5 average on our mostly highway test drive to Chicago. Watching our graphic display, part of the vehicle’s information system, we see a drastic increase when we’re crawling through a few miles of congestion on the Skyway. After about three miles of the congestion our average jumped to about 25-mpg – still well shy of the estimated level. Emissions are just about as low as we could imagine earning the SULEV designation (super ultra low emissions vehicle).

Toyota and Lexus are at the leading edge of hybrid technology with their third-generation hybrid system. In this case powering-the-car duties are shared by a 3.3-liter, quad-cam, V6 with intelligent variable valve timing - a powerful and smooth engine, to be sure. Assisting the gasoline engine are two electric motors that kick on at very low speeds, whenever extra power is needed for acceleration and to regenerate energy when braking or coasting. The electronics that control the interactions between power sources are way beyond this humble reporter’s comprehension. The total output of the dual drive system is listed at 268-hp. Acceleration is brisk, leaving no deficit in our expectations of power. At full throttle we don’t feel like were flailing or in any way exceeding the vehicle’s comfort level.

Inside we’re pampered by the Lexus version of elegance and simplicity - a nice combination of wood grain, brushed aluminum, leather and other quality materials. Conversation was easy in the ultra quiet cabin. My rear seat passengers thought it was comfortable and roomy back there but would have appreciated some seat heaters. OK, at over 50-grand that’s not unreasonable. It was pretty chilly on this football Saturday.

My daughter and a bunch of U of M alum pals gathered for a Michigan/Ohio State football game party. I’m thinking this is not the demographic who are potential customers for this relatively conservative luxury vehicle. My cronies are probably more amenable to the Lexus ambiance. (Michigan lost by one field goal but the enthusiasm of the party was not spoiled.)

The following day the ladies went shopping while the fellas stayed back to watch more football – the Bears this time. The ladies loved the Lexus for its ease of handling in the city and its aesthetics but didn’t begin to fill up the rear with its 85-cubic-feet of cargo area and 1,150-pounds of payload capacity, nor did they attempt to tow anything home though they could have managed 3,500 pounds of trailer. After all we do have the tailoring package and they know full well that I really want a vintage race car for Christmas.

Lexus’ standard warranty applies: 4-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, 6-year/70,000-miles on the powertrain, and 8-year/unlimited miles for corrosion. And hybrid-specific warranty covers for 8-year/100,000-miles the hybrid batteries and hybrid components.

You’ll not want the buy the Lexus RX 400h if your considerations are purely long range costs. After all, considering the extra cost of the dual power system and the fuel savings, even in the most generous scenario the payoff period is close to 10 years. If, on the other hand, you’re interested in a mighty classy and luxurious, space-efficient CUV that makes a statement about your environmental concerns and your forward-looking technological understanding, it would be hard to do better than this beauty.

© Steve Purdy, Shunpiker Productions, All Rights Reserved

Tech Tags: Automotive Auto Auto+News Lexus

FORD To Showcase record breaking hydrogen fuel cell powered exploreR at 2006 LA Auto Show

Los Angeles, Nov. 27 – Ford Motor Company will raise the bar in the hydrogen fuel cell race today at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show when it unveils an all-new fuel cell powered Explorer that can travel 350 miles on a single fill-up, more than any fuel cell vehicle on the road.

The six-passenger fuel cell Explorer is one of several vehicles with green technology that Ford will have at the show, including the new 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid, the PZEV emissions compliant Ford Fusion and Ford Focus and the 2008 Ford F-Series Super Duty with Ford Clean Diesel Technology.

The fuel cell Explorer prototype is part of a series of vehicles partially funded by a contract with the United States Department of Energy. The goal of the Technology Demonstration Vehicle program is to find a pathway for a fuel alternative to petroleum that has less environmental impact than current powertrain technology.

“We believe hydrogen may become a viable motor fuel in the long-term,” said Gerhard Schmidt, vice president, Research & Advanced Engineering, Ford Motor Company. “With these technology demonstration vehicles, Ford continues to lead the way in the development of hydrogen technology.”

Research into hydrogen, including the hydrogen fuel-cell-powered Ford Explorer, is part of Ford's overall effort to address the challenges of climate change and energy independence. Ford is moving ahead with a range of technology solutions simultaneously, including vehicles such as the Ford Escape Hybrid and Mercury Mariner Hybrid, hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen internal combustion engines, ethanol, clean diesel and refinements to gasoline fueled engines and advanced transmissions. Some of the technology, such as that seen in Ford’s lineup of hybrid vehicles, represents near-term approaches. Other technology, including hydrogen cell, must be viewed as a long-term option.

Fuel Cell Explorer

The first vehicle to be publicly unveiled from the Ford and DoE demonstration program is the fuel-cell-powered Ford Explorer. While it comes equipped with advanced electric all-wheel-drive like the production model from which it is based, a center-mounted hydrogen storage tank now occupies the space typically used for the 6-speed automatic transmission found in production Explorer models. Locating the hydrogen storage tank in this area allowed engineers to design a larger tank and deliver a never-before-achieved 350-mile driving range for a fuel cell vehicle. This unique design maintains Explorer’s six-passenger seating arrangement and the cargo capacity found in the production Ford Explorer.

In less than one year, the fuel cell Explorer has accumulated more than 17,000 miles, including a world-record drive of 1556 miles in a single 24-hour period, the most of any fuel cell vehicle to date. The record was set by Ford engineers at the new Dearborn Development Center test facility in Dearborn, Mich.

In January, at the 2007 North American International Auto Show, Ford will unveil the next vehicle in this series of demonstration vehicles.

Hydrogen Part of a Broader Effort At Ford

Ford first began working on hydrogen technology in the early 1990s. Ford’s first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, released in 2001, was based on a lightweight aluminum sedan body, which also was used in the development of the company’s first hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine.

The company currently has a fleet of 30 hydrogen-powered Focus fuel cell vehicles on the road as part of a worldwide, seven-city program to conduct real-world testing of fuel cell technology. The fleet has accumulated more than 300,000 miles since its inception. With this fleet on the ground, a great deal of information that can be integrated into future fuel cell vehicle propulsion systems is being generated in different local environmental conditions.

Having the fleet outside the confines of Ford Motor Company also has allowed the team to gain valuable feedback on servicing vehicles in the field. As a hydrogen infrastructure is developed and implemented for the fleet at each location, lessons learned are being generated to insure that the customer and hydrogen fueling interface is seamless and customer friendly.

Tech Tags: Automotive Auto Auto+News Ford

Honda recalling 209,898 Mobilo cars

TOKYO November 25, 2006; Japan Today reported that Honda Motor Co said on Friday that it is recalling a total of 209,898 of its Mobilio and the Mobilio Spike small passenger cars for repairs of defective parts.

The brake lights and the gears of the vehicles, manufactured from November 2001 to May 2005, may fail due to a defective electric wiring system, Honda said in a report to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. From October 2004 to September this year, 41 cases of such defects were reported, including one in which a driver could not move the gear stick from the position for parking, Honda said.

Tech Tags: Automotive Auto Auto+News Honda
