This one is totally live, doesn’t use a DAW (other than to capture the audio) and uses just the 8 notes of Floyd’s On The Run (bar a drone in the background).

The Microbrute powers it all with the sequence programmed in and its own output mixed with the Mutable Instruments Braids and Make Noise STO adding their voices too.  Modulation is provided by the Trigger Riot, Pittsburgh Modular Synth Block and Xoac Devices Moskwa sequencer.

Drums are various lovely Tip Top Audio modules.

I’ve tried to annotate the patch within the video but have probably left out a few incidental bits.

No effects or compression (other than from uploading to YouTube).

As seen on Matrixsynth, the fastest lean green synth posting machine bar none.

Looking back, it wasn’t surprising we were hardly beating away the girls like Don Johnson and er, the other one.

I’m still a proud knob twiddler but let’s face it, even mentioning the word ‘synth’ to a non-nerd brings on looks of pity and trying to explain ‘modular’ to someone is even worse – you instantly see eyes glaze over and internal voices go ‘BORRRRRINGGGGG!’

Let’s celebrate our norm-ness though with a few highlights of some YouTube sensations….

This first one is pretty new with our star of the show rocking the QuNeo like you’ve never seen before:

It is very VERY addictive.  When those little boxes arrive in the post, the frisson of excitement builds, you’re proud you haven’t spent too much, you plug it in, make some sounds and slowly realise you HAVE spent too much as it’s not just that module you’ve bought but a steady stream of knobby circuit boarded goodness.

I’ve started making some noises but the studio is in disarray so as soon as that’s sorted I’ll have everything wired in properly and will start to video some stuff.

Its looking like the OP1 will finally come into its own in this set too as a sound source and recorder

Either way, the last X months (I’ve lost track how many) have been a rollercoaster ride with the wife and I having a little one.

It’s now time to get back to writing and sharing my audio journeys.

It hasn’t all been babies the last few months though, the studio has seen many bits of kit come and go. Digital is going (Korg microKorg, Roland D-70, Virus A and B – all gone) and analogue is definitely making a dent in my wallet, most notably an Alesis Andromeda A6 taking up a chunk of space.

Perhaps more interesting is the arrival of my first modular set up – or bits of it anyway. I can see the beginnings of a particular addictive hobby starting. More on that and some very exciting modular news soon.
