Awesome Local Holiday Gift Event with Shop787!

Wondering where you're going to find your holiday gifts this year? Want to buy local but not sure where to look? Don't really have the time to go to a million stores? Lucky for you, there's a fabulous solution, and it's called Shop787!

On Sunday, November 8, 2009 from Noon to 6:00 pm, join the fabulous Launch787 and find over 50 local boutiques, designers, artists, salons and more to help you shop locally, affordably and all in one place! Vendors like 302 Designs, *annemarie*, Eliza Page, Finch, Hem Jeans, Izzy and Ash, Sanctuary, Underwear and many, many more will be in attendance!

Not some stuffy event in a conference room, Shop787 is taking place at the lovely Mosaic at Mueller apartment community and you'll be able to enjoy the Texas Fall(-ish) weather while you browse local vendors sprinkled around the community's courtyards.

AND not only will there be fabulous gifts to check out, there will also be access to the food court and free beverages (did we mention Tito's Vodka and Sweet Leaf Tea will be in attendance?)

And the super BEST part of this event? You'll even be helping out kids over at Dell Children’s Hospital when you bring a new book to donate to their book drive.

Advance tickets are just $5 (and will be given line priority). Day-of tickets are $10 (or $5 if you bring a book for the Dell Children’s Hospital). Kids under the age of 12 get in free.

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, and when it's too small or unattractive it can be a real drain. We bring to you today some resources for inspiring kitchen makeovers. The first two photos are the before and after photos of the kitchen of Ryan Brown, the blogger behind Inspired Austin, completed with the help of architect Robert Shelton.

"Brad Stovall’s new JAZZJIVE series aims to capture the emotion, soul and passion of the jazz musician. Inspired by the vivid history of the New Orleans jazz scene, Stovall, an avid jazz enthusiast, illuminates the symbiotic bond of musician and instrument using oil and enamel on canvas punctuated by bright white backgrounds. The JAZZJIVE exhibit begins at the Austin Art Garage on October 1st and ends on October 31st."

I'm so excited to share the news that awesome artist and poet Austin Kleon's new book, Newspaper Blackout Poems is available for preorder! I haven't seen the inside of the book yet, but I can imagine it will be as poignant, surprising, and delightful as his other work!

A super awesome event is coming up this Saturday, the 19th at the Scoot Inn, showcasing all sorts of local goodness, like fashion design, art, music and even rollergirls. I was going to post some cool photos of some of the vendors and participants, but there are so many I couldn't choose! You'll just have to check out the website yourself! (Seriously, I'm not lazy---the amount of awesomeness at this event is going to be overwhelming in a good way!)

Local Graphic Design Firm: Built by Robots!

I came across this cleverly named graphic design firm, run by BJ Heinley, while researching another one of his ventures, Verde Camp. I like his style, very punchy and witty. Besides, I just really like the name "Built by Robots."

Also, because I really didn't emphasize it enough, you MUST check out Verde Camp, this awesome compound of mini houses in Austin that he's turned into guest houses. So cute!

Yummy Furniture and Fun!

Shame on me for JUST getting to posting this, but local awesome furniture store Threshold received some new furniture shipments a couple of weeks ago and I sure do like what I see:

I don't know what's up with that giant horse statue and the large and in charge pig sculpture, but I'm interested.

You can check out Threshold on their website (though it looks like they're working on it), on their blog and even on Facebook. But of course, the best choice would be in person!

Local Interior Designer: Veronica Koltuniak

I've covered the awesome furniture designs of local creative Veronica Koltuniak on Apartment Therapy before. Her talent for taking old furniture frames and livening them up with fresh fabrics is astounding, but it also happens that she's quite the talented and famous interior designer as well, having worked on projects for Courteney Cox and David Arquette and others. She lives in Austin now, and we just heard she'll be doing the interiors of the new high-end, twenty-four hour diner opening up on 6th and Lamar, Twenty Four.

Local Graphic Design Firm: Asterisk Group

I was told to check out this local Graphics firm by a friend, and I have to say she was right! They're awesome. I love the clean yet really energetic designs. It looks like they have a hefty portfolio full of great brand identities and it also looks like they've done some good work improving the signage of a few HEB stores:

Local Architecture Firm: Tim Cuppett Architects

I really love this local architecture firm, Tim Cuppett Architects. The designers here tackle a number of varied projects, from urban lofts, to residences in natural settings to historic homes. The one thing all of their projects seem to have in common, though, are large challenges that have to be overcome before construction can even begin. Where this firm excels is overcoming these issues in gorgeous and clever ways:

I've been totally blown away by the portfolio of Mark Cravotta, owner of Cravotta Studios, a full service interior design firm. His designs for high-end client residences are an intoxicating mix of Hollywood Regency, modern contemporary and transitional designs:

Annie's Cafe and Bar

Just found this very in depth review of the new Annie's Cafe that opened up on Congress Avenue downtown. While I certainly love food, I'm more interested in the airy and open interior I see in this photo from Statesman photographer Mike Sutter.

While I haven't been to the location yet, I like what I'm seeing so far. Has anyone visited this place yet? What did you think of the interior architecture and design? Let me know!
