War – What is it good for?

I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s in Levittown, NY. And in Levittown, Memorial Day was a BIG DEAL. There was a huge parade that I watched from the sidewalks until I was old enough to march in it with my high school band. The parade was long. It started at Levittown Memorial High School. Wound through a neighborhood out to Gardiners Ave. Then north to Hempstead Turnpike, turning west past the big Mays shopping center eventually turning north again on Division Ave and up to the huge front lawn of my school Division Ave High School. There a big Memorial Service was held for those who had fallen in World Wars I, II and in Korea. We’d never heard of Vietnam or Iraq.

The parade was massive. Fire engines from every fire house. Police vehicles. And dozens of marching bands playing patriotic music. At the Memorial service there were lots of military, uniforms, hats, white gloves and American flags as far as the eye could see. The parade and service took up the entire morning. Then it was home for a family or neighborhood BBQ. Here in Boulder we celebrate with a 3 day Creek Festival and one of the worlds biggest 10k races – the Bolder Boulder. I wish we had a big parade instead.

Today I remember my high school classmate Kellum Grant. Staff Sgt. Grant died in Vietnam. I’m sure Kellum didn’t want to die, but die he did. 10,000 miles away from home. He was 19. Maybe 20. A child who was man enough to die. He died along with 50,000 other men and women. About the same number that will run in todays Bolder Boulder.

And while Kellum was fighting in the jungles of Vietnam, I was getting drunk and smoking pot and protesting from the safe, serene campus of a small college in Iowa. No bullets. No napalm. Nobody dying next to me. It’s the children we old men send off to war. It’s children killing other children. And it’s so wrong! It’s mostly children fighting today in the Middle East. In Afghanistan, today is NOT a holiday! It’s another day of war!

Today I stand and salute you Staff Sgt. Grant. Thank you for your sacrifice. Thank you to all who sacrificed then and who are still sacrificing now.

War – what is it good for? Absolutely nothing!

Colorado Music Hall Of Fame Inaugural Concert & Induction Ceremonies

Couple of friends went to the Colorado Music Hall Of Fame inaugural induction & concert last night a 1st Bank Center. Said the joint was sold out and the music as fantastic. John Denver became the first inductee. Red Rocks made it as first venue inducted. Music by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Boulder Symphony, Olivia Newton John, John Sommers who wrote “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” and many others including Nick Forester of E-Town.

“Nothing would please me more than to know that there is an ever-expanding group of individuals who are working together each in their own way to improve the quality of life for all the life here on Spaceship Earth.

That is what the music is about, that is what my life is about and that is what the Windstar Foundation is about.”

Boulder’s Walnut Brewery – Still Great!

I had lunch today at The Walnut Brewery. Excellent as usual. I’m asking you to show them some love by visiting soon.

When I was there today, the place was practically empty. Maybe 1/4 full. Place used to be packed all the time. Now maybe it was just an off day. But TWB deserves your support. If for no other reason than they feed a ton of needy local families for free on Christmas Day.

The Walnut Brewery, one of the first real brew pubs in Colorado, was owned by Rock Bottom Restaurants and recently sold to Craftworks. But it’s still a Boulder place with Boulder people working there – and they’re updated menu is as varied and appetizing as ever.

Today I had the Reuben and my guest ordered the shrimp & chicken pasta dish. Both were excellent and the so was the service. So next time you’re downtown stop in and have a bite to eat or enjoy a glass or two of one of Colorado’s original craft beers.

Boulder County Wildfires: Button Rock & Left Hand Canyon

Boulder County Fire crews are battling not one – but two Wildfires burning in Boulder County. Details below.

Lyons Wildfire: Wind conditions improving, but still a factor in fighting small wildland fire west of Lyons.Current. Button Rock weather: 50 degrees, humidity 26 percent, wind from the northwest at 8 mph. Ridgetop winds northwest at 15-30 mph.

Wind conditions expected to improve a little over the next couple of hours. Winds continue to be from a northwesterly direction and may begin to mix down into the valley. Still potential for gusts to 50 mph on the ridges.

Information on the cause of the fire is available on the City of Longmont’s website.

Left Hand Canyon Wildfire:
Fire is estimated at 20 acres moving east from 3 MM on Lefthand Canyon Dr. towards entrance to Boulder County Heil Ranch Open Space off Lefthand Canyon Dr.

Lefthand Canyon Dr. is closed form U.S. 36 to James Canyon.
Mandatory evacuations have been called for approximately 223 households in the Lefthand Canyon Dr. area, include Lake of the Pines subdivision to the north.
Large animals are being evacuated to Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont
A call center for residents is being established. The phone number will be 303-413-7730 when it is activated.
