Dogs and Kids: Summer Bonding Time

Summer will be here before you know it and so will the unique opportunity that Summer provides our kids. Bonding with their dogs requires time and some patient help in understanding what it takes to get Fido to be their sidekick for all things fun.

There are many ways we can help our kids build a bond with their dogs that will last throughout their time together. Following are a few of the tips that come to mind. What are yours?

Make the decision about when your child is ready for more responsibility with great care. Complete respect for your dog's health and safety, as well as that of other children, is imperative.
Let your kids feed your pets during the Summer. Dogs generally bond more closely to those that provide their nourishment.
Offer safety tips and do's and don'ts when are kids are learning to feed your pets. Understanding food and toy aggression is important to their safety.
Encourage your kids to play outdoors when taking their dog along on neighborhood play dates. Keeping Fido on a leash is an important part of that rule, and this time will allow your older kids to get a better understanding of the care and decision-making that goes into pets that are tagalongs.
When friends come to your home to play with your kids, discourage rambunctious play in favor of games that may include your dog. Hide-n-Seek, Fetch, Frisbee, and Laser Tag are great fun for kids and their dogs. Be sure to monitor their activities and let them know you are supervising. Your dog will appreciate your concern as much as their attentions.
As much as I'm a dog park lover, I don't believe this is a terrific place for kids under

the age of about 10 or possibly even 12. Even at this age, your son or daughter will need much instruction to be safe and enjoy the experience. Check out these tips: Dog Park Safety Challenges for Children and Dog Park Visits: Preparing Kids for a Safe First Experience.
Beyond adolescence you'll find your kids may take their own path in regard to spending time with their dog. Building this relationship before that time is important to cementing it for the future. College homecomings are wonderful when Fido greets his "kid" at the door happily.

20 Halloween Tips for Dog Owners

During our #Coupaween Twitter Party, I shared a good many Halloween safety tips, alongside Arden Moore's expert tips. I've combined some of our tips to make this a quicker read that is even more helpful.

If you missed the party, or simply found it tough to keep up, I hope the following tips will get put to good use on Halloween evening or if you have a themed party. Feel free to leave your additional thoughts in comments below.

Avoid K9 bolters by keeping dogs on leashes or in a closed room when you green trick-or-treaters.
Make sure your pet sports a reflective collar for visibility with ID tags, name, your cell phone number and microchip.
When opting for costume wear, check for fit and comfort. Do a dress rehearsal a few days early to allow time for modifications.
Have important numbers available: vet, ER vet, ASPCA poison control hotline.
Making your pet's costume yourself? Avoid buttons or small items that can be swallowed.
Consider pet's visibility when selecting costumes. Dogs may be more easily frightened when they cannot see well.
When checking for fit, also look at body language. Nothing too tight?
Simple, yet stylish goes a long way. Velcro bow ties or pleated tuxedos on male dogs is very dapper.
When taking Fido out to trick-or-treat, choose light-colored costumes for best visibility by others.
Black costumes are very hard to see in the dark AND difficult to recognize when worn on a black dog. Choose contrasting color to your dog's fur.
Dogs will often hang their head when extremely unhappy with costume. Consider removing headpiece or footwear.
Be sure costumes are made of breathable fabric and are fire retardant.
Help your dog become more comfortable with costume by daily practice with treats and praise. Go slow!
Reduce stress by treating your dog to a brisk walk before sundown on Halloween eve.
Associate costume with pleasurable activity by letting Fido wear it while eating.
Dogs who won't wear costumes will often tolerate a bandana, reflective collar or collar light.
ONLY take well-socialized dogs on house to house trick-or-treating.
Candy and wrappers all out of reach!
Candles are dangerous. Choose battery-operated versions for safety.
Simplify costumes by using only the key components. Example: Wizard of Oz's Dorothy's red slippers can be easily made to slip over dog's paws without being slippers. Think out of the box!

Training Your Super Puppy To Be Fearless

Are you planning to add a furry member to your family this holiday season? You're not alone. Although the downsides are often touted, a well thought out addition is fine. The reality is that many families choose this time of year in order to use the extra time off to begin house training and bonding with their new family member. Today I'd like to offer a few tips from the Whole Dog Journal, along with my own enhancements to their ideas, sure to aid in helping you raise a fear-free pup.

Although ideally you'd want your new little buddy to have these experiences prior to entering your home, adding these enhancements to your holiday playtime will most certainly be good for his growth and potential to be a wonderful family member:

Give your pup a chance to experience walking on 7 types of surfaces: carpet, concrete, wood, vinyl, grass, dirt, gravel, and wood chips. Each different texture will have its own lessons, most importantly that different footing is needed and nothing should be feared by a variety of textures under the pads of the feet.
Offer 7 different types of play objects for a variety of stimulation: big balls, small balls, soft fabric toys, fuzzy toys, squeaky toys, paper or cardboard (toilet paper/paper towel centers are perfect), metal items (without sharp edges and sticks or pieces of hose. Remember that all playtime with toys should be supervised to assure your puppy's safety.
Include 7 different locations in your puppy's experiences: front yard, back yard, basement, kitchen, car, garage, laundry room and bathroom. You'll want your little one to know all of these places are safe and fun, so make sure to offer pleasant experiences in each.
Introduce your pup to at least 7 different types of new people: babies, children, seniors, people with canes, walkers, or wheelchairs, people in uniforms, people wearing hats, and men with beards.
Provide 7 different challenges for your pup to work his problem-solving skills: climb around inside a box, climb off the top of a box, go through a tunnel, climb up steps, climb down steps, climb over obstacles, play hide an seek, go in and out of a doorway with a step up or down, run around a fence. Surely you'll be able to find even more challenges like these. Each will teach your new friend lots of ways to solve new problems.
Offer meals in a variety of different containers: metal, plastic, china, cardboard, paper, pie plate and a frying pan. Don't forget to also use food-dispensing balls for a slower way to serve a meal, while your dog learns to push the ball around the house to retrieve his dinner.
In addition to these ways to eat, your pup should learn that eating in a variety of locations is also a good thing: crate, yard, kitchen, basement, laundry room, living room, bathroom and even an RV. The lesson is clear; wherever you offer food to your pup, it's still yummy!
Exposure to many different types of noises will help your pup learn that sound is not a scary thing. Include as much variety as possible, focusing on things like banging pots, thunder, loud music, traffic, sirens, vacuums, landscaping equipment, fireworks, dog parks, and crowds

Behind the Wheel: 7 Safety Tips

I have a couple--sometimes 3--favorite tagalongs for errands, dog park visits, checking in with Grandma and other fun outings that are dog-friendly. With each passing year I seem to learn new things that help me to maintain a safe drive for all participants. Hopefully you'll take a minute to soak these up:

Always use crash-tested seatbelts and harnesses, attached to either the car's seatbelt system or the cargo tie downs. These could save not only your dogs' lives, but also your own. You don't want a dog in your lap while trying to maneuver during a potential accident situation, nor do you want a flying dog to hit you or the windshield in case of an accident. Securely fastening your pups using an unbreakable harness and seatbelt are essential. As American Express would say: Don't leave home without it.

evaluate your airbag situation. Older models may not have them; newer models may have ones that cannot be turned off. The latest models have on/off switches or are automatically turned off when no weight is on the seat. Know your car's potential for deployment in the passenger seat. When in doubt, move your toy-sized dog to the back.
If you assess your front and side airbag situation and determine that your pup is safe from a deployment, there's still one additional safety matter to attend to. While carseats do generally include seat attachments and clips for the dog's harness, these rarely are made to withstand the pressure of an impact, leaving your pup at risk of a snapped tether, forcing him into projectile mode. Avoid this by assuring the carseat is secured by the automobile seatbelt, and then attach your pup to the seatbelt using a crash-tested harness and tether. I know this sounds like a mouthful, but once it's in place, it only takes a few seconds to hook your pup in when you head off for some fun. Let's make sure you both arrive alive.
When carrying a single, small dog in the back seat, use either a folded seat back to raise his level, or place an elevated carseat in the center. The center of the back seat is the safest place for your pup in the event of a collision. Be sure that the carseat you select includes the option to secure it to the car's seatbelt, and purchase a separate crash-tested carseat harness and tether to keep Fido safely in his seat at all times.
Your medium to larger dog must always ride in the back seat or on the forward-folded platform behind you, with a seatbelt harness tethered to the luggage tie downs or the car seatbelts. This safety measure will keep Fido from trying to join you up front, interfere with your concentration or your ability to steer, see ahead and control the vehicle. These safety concerns are just as important as his own safety.
Remember that one of the most common injuries our pets' doctors see is foreign objects in our dogs' eyes. Despite the joy your dog exhibits when riding with his head out the window, for his safety you should keep the windows closed or at least only cracked, to protect his peepers from injury.
Finally, consider loose items in the cabin area of the car. Anything heavy enough to cause harm should be tied down or placed in the floor area where they are least likely to come into contact with your pup.

Retrievers Love a Good Romp

I love going camping, and every year I try to go camping at least once. I always take my dogs, Sadie and Rusty with me. They love all the new smells, sights, and sounds. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you go camping with your dog.

Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date with a phone call to your vet. Take a first aid kit for you and your dog. Make sure to include sun-block.

You may want to apply flea and tick preventive on your dog. Fleas and ticks can be anywhere, but are more prevalent in the woods. Using a preventative product could help to keep you from bringing fleas back to your home and yard.

Be sure to have an updated ID tag and/or microchip on your dog, just in case your dog gets lost. If you're staying at one campsite for any number of days stop by your local Wal-mart/Petsmart and create a dog tag with the name, location of your campsite and a phone number where you can be reached. Bring an extra leash in case something happens to your regular leash.

Make sure your destination allows dogs; most campgrounds are dog friendly but some national parks like Yosemite allow dogs only in certain campsites. Verify the trails around your chosen campsite allow dogs. You can go to www.GoPetFriendly.com to find an extensive list of pet friendly campsites. www.hikewithyourdog.com offers a listing of trails in the United States and Canada that welcome dogs.

When picking out your campsite try to get one that offers your dog some shade. Camping near a stream or lake is also a good idea. It will provide your dog with an easy source of water.

Pack enough dog food and water for your pooch. I always bring collapsible bowls for their food and water. I prefer the convenience of collapsible bowls because they are lightweight, and you can easily pack them in a backpack if you decide to go hiking. After feeding, empty your dog’s food dish of any leftover food. You do not want to attract any unwanted insects or wildlife.

Bring your dog’s brush with you to remove stickers, fox tails and other things caught in their fur. I have found using a small black men’s comb will remove most stickers from dog hair fairly easily.

I prefer to sleep with my dogs while camping. This way I am alerted by Sadie and Rusty if anything enters the camp area. They also help to keep me warm during the night. However, if you prefer, there are tents made for dogs, and you could bring along Fido's dog bed. Keep in mind if you leave your dog outside all night he/she could get sprayed by a skunk or be vulnerable to dangerous wild animals such as bears.

Make sure you are aware of other animals that may be in the area. Many people take their dogs camping with them, so other dogs in the area are likely. There could be people on horseback, squirrels, rabbits, coyotes, the list is endless. Be prepared to have some adventures. Enjoy!

Ramping Up Ease of Entry for Fido

The All Things Dog Blog gang is getting ready to embark on a new chapter. We're adding an RV lifestyle to our travel with dogs. What's more, we'll be doing this in a very uncharacteristic way--green! As we begin to venture out more frequently, I'll be bringing you tips for camping greener, living lighter and finding solutions for your Fido friends.

Today's post is all about solutions. With Tanner sitting on the fence between middle aged and senior (I can't believe he's 7 already!), I'm starting to be more careful about his joints and overall comfort and ease of activities. No more agility for this boy; we want him to live to a ripe old age without hip issues. We've started with the addition of a ramp for entry into the RV.

While Tanner doesn't yet need a ramp, we want to be prepared. And further, it was

important that he learn to use it and build the necessary muscles he'll be using to traverse this bridge to his temporary home. This super light Ultralight Bifold Pet Ramp folds in half and stores easily in the compartments under the RV "house", making it the ideal solution for RVs, SUVs and other larger vehicles, as well as homes with several steps into the entrance.

Tips: Dogs Doing the Blue Ridge

The All Things Dog Blog crew is fresh off a road trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway from end to end, just before the rush of visitors arrive for the Autumn colors. If you plan to head there for Fall fun, here are a few things we think you'll want to know:

Yes, your dog is welcome on the Blue Ridge Parkway, while kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet long. Don't forget the poop bags :)
Just because the pullover doesn't look exciting, don't skip it. There are some hidden gems on those pathways that lead to the overlooks that are often well worth your time.
There's no cell signal along 95% of the parkway, so prepare for a welcome chance to get unplugged. Check your email and voicemail before heading into the mountains and charge up your devices as well as your camera. You'll want backups. I ran my phone battery down every day by taking pictures.
Very few visitor centers offer food so prepare a picnic for your day trip or a cooler of food if you're camping. Bring plenty of water and food for you and your dog.
In my humble opinion, the Great Smokey Mountains are mis-named. The "smoke" is actually clouds that hover low and tend to be a driving hazard on some days. At times we were driving only 20 mph due to bad visibility, but this problem is patchy. It won't impede the entire trip. Plan extra time to assure you make it to your destination safely and in time.
Remember to carry water and first aid supplies for all participants. You'll find a travel first aid kit for dogs at Kurgo.com, that attaches to your belt. Very handy!
Finally, save some time to relax and bond with your dog along the way. He'll enjoy the hikes as much as a picnic under a tree. I managed to find a few chances to pull out my yoga mat and relax. What an amazing experience this was; watch for more on this topic.

Is Bowser Ready for Summer Travel?

It's that time of year again. Summer is here and families are heading out for vacation adventures. Whether you're driving or flying, camping or roughing it at the Ritz, there are still certain things you'll need. Start with an appropriately sized suitcase like this little Yorkie, and then add some other imperatives. Enjoy the video and then read on.

Don't forget an adequate supply of your dog's regular food. Switching food suddenly will often cause digestive upset for your pup.
Medications that your dog requires should be set aside by your packing area to assure that you don't forget them.
Essentials include bowls, bottled water (new areas will have varying bacterium in the water. Choose bottled or filtered for happier tummies), leash, collar and tags, medical records including shots, and a health certificate from your vet stating that Fido is healthy for travel. Many states will require this document for interstate travel. Make sure your dog is micro-chipped also!
If your pup prefers a favorite bed, try fitting it into your suitcase. If this doesn't work, you may want to give our friends at Wash-n-Zip a check. These beds travel nicely and wash easily in household or hotel machines.
Just in case of a health issue or injury, pack a pet first aid kit that includes everything you can imagine using. Injured dogs can lash out, so include a soft muzzle to keep you and caregivers safe while helping Fido get well. Injuries on vacation are just no fun, but preparation can make a huge difference. honestly, each kit I looked at this time was missing something. Some had a dozen of every item, while others were missing important features like instant ice packs and self-stick bandage. What's more, you'll really need a guidebook if you find yourself with a seriously injured pet. I've been there and it's extremely distressing when you have no idea what to do. Pick up Amy Shojai's pet first aid book and tuck it in your carry on. It's worth the space and the price.
Comfort means a lot to your pet, just as it does to you. Select a couple of small comfort items--toys or other favorites--to include in your pet's travel things. These may be especially welcome during travel when stress levels can be at their highest.
Speaking of stress, it's good to determine what works best to reduce anxiety from travel in your dog. Is it music, a comfort item, a piece of your clothing, or your presence? Whatever it is, give it to him early and often. Your trip will be more

enjoyable for everyone when the dog is a happy traveler.
Remember to make time for bonding with your pet while you're on your adventure. Take a hike with a view, enjoy an interesting historical area, visit a dog park or play hide and seek in your hotel room. Whatever it is that makes you and Fido feel spunky and end up cuddling. Putting Pep in Your Senior Dog's Step

Finding Your Senior's Inner Puppy

If you're familiar with horses, you may know that your ride is likely to be more energetic on the way back to the barn than it was as you left the barn. Unlike dogs, horses enjoy the thrill of knowing the end of the walk or ride is near. Horses love the barn for friends, food, family, and familiarity.

Our dogs are quite the opposite. They need--actually thrive on--excitement, new and different experiences, and problems to solve. Unlike horses, they are rarely fearful of the noises or flickering sunlight on the leaves; dogs love these things and enjoy figuring out where they come from and what they can do with them to make the day even more exciting.

As a result, our dogs tend to have stored up energy at the beginning of the walk that means you may need to step up your pace to keep up with Fido for quite a ways. Take Tanner, for example. He's just now beginning to show signs of slowing down, but only on the return trip. As we leave the house my arm needs to be solidly in its socket and I must always remember to ask Tanner to sit as we exit the house, allowing me to lock up and store my supplies before we take off. That departure is sometimes much like a jet.

Fast forward to the point at which we turn back toward the house and everything changes. While Tanner's pace used to remain the same and required multiple walks, bike rides and swims each day, he now is beginning to show his age and will pace himself on the return trip. Some days I think this is simply his way of telling me he wishes we would continue the exploration, while other days it is very clear that he is just plain tired. We had one of those today and I was ready.

We walked during the mid-afternoon when the sun was bright and there was a beautiful, cool breeze. No complaints about being overly hot or freezing cold. As Tanner began to lag behind, I slowed down to mimic his baby steps. This confused the tar out of him and at one point he stopped and looked up at me as if to say, "Where's the pep in your step?" I ignored him and slowed down a tweak more.

As Tanner became more confused his problem-solving skills went to work. I guess he decided he needed to take the lead in order to speed up the process of getting home to his post-walk treat and a fresh bowl of water. That's what I was waiting for--him to step up and show me what he could do. Yay Tanner!

And there's more. Just before we turned the corner to re-enter our neighborhood, some flickery sunshine under a group of large shade trees caught Tanner's eye. He was curious, yet knew that home was not far. He seemed ready to let this one go and continue on. I held back and asked him to investigate. I wanted him to be reminded of what his curiosity brings him--joy, fun, excitement, and playfulness.

Tanner lost himself in chasing the lights as they flickered through the leaves, filtering and moving without warning. He danced, pounced, and bobbed around the area, totally enjoying this experience with complete abandon. Suddenly he appeared to be a puppy again.

After he exhausted himself in play, we headed home, eager to see Oliver who was napping off a day of doctor's appointments and shopping with Grandma. At the door, I squatted and took Tanner's face in my hands. I looked him in the eyes and told him he would always be my puppy. I took a vow to myself to find new and different ways to help him find his energy when it is lost after a long walk. Add Yourself or a Toy for Swimming "Work"

Just like my dogs, each of yours come from a rich history of jobs that they were once trained for and worked at daily. Even if your pup is a Heinz 57 mix, he has likely got a strong suit of instincts that can help you guide him through activities that will work his brain, helping to keep him young. Finding these interests will be key to working your senior dog as he ages and is less able to handle extensive, physical activity.

Not sure what your dog's instincts are? You may want to pick up a DNA test kit to see what your particular Fido's primary breed profile looks like. This should aid immensely in finding out what you can do to find Bowser's favorite activity.

example, started their breed development as attendants to queens, acting as daily companions. Oliver's breed history as a companion dog--despite his puppy mill breeding--has bode well in his new job as a Medical Alert service dog. He keeps tabs on me quite attentively, rarely losing focus except for the occasional social opportunity. I can't complain about that; a social life is healthy for us all.

Tanner, on the other hand, has a strong Retriever DNA thread. His instict for retrieving is so strong, in fact, that I have witnessed several episodes in which he cornered a live critter, only to sit and await my arrival and instructions. There's no killing instinct in him, which I am told is true to a pure Golden--the need to return the downed animal to his handler without damaging it. Who knew?!!!

Retrieving is an activity that involves both mind and body, a good combination to keep your pup young and alert. Using his brain to solve problems and follow through on a job helps to keep him young.

All that said, I've been able to put my boys to work in ways that best suit them. To maintain the health of Tanner's hips, he is now spending a greater share of his exercise time swimming and fetching in water. These activities put little weight on his joints, while helping maintain the strength in his muscles.

This is my limit today, Mom. See my pile of retrieved toys? Treat time now and I need a nap!

Today's exercise involved retrieving 7 toys from the pool and returning them to a pile. This is an activity we have developed since he mastered the toss and return game at a young age. I wanted to keep him learning.

Oliver's job requires his keen observation skills and attention to my scent. If there's a shift in this, he's up and in my face, letting me know it's time to take action. All seems to be well in his world as long as he is able to be near me. What's not to like about that?!!!

Tanner Found a Cat in Our Elm Tree

Lately the boys and I have been testing out some new walking themes in our efforts to give Tanner a few new thrills in life as a senior. Don't get me wrong, Oliver enjoys these games as well. To be honest, I do too! It's always fun to change things up a bit, and plugging in a new theme for each walk--or even each week's walks--can be a fun way to teach your dog to reconnect with his senses, even if they may be lagging a bit behind their earlier abilities.

Since Tanner's ears and eyes are less acutely active these days, I'll be working to help him focus them to get better results. However, today's post is more about the first route we have recently tested--nosework. It seems that Tanner's nose is as keen as ever, now that we've had a chance to work this theme for a week and see how he performs.

Here's one method I tried: Oliver and I took a quick walk to place some markers for Tanner to find. I took an old rag and rubbed it around inside an empty bag from cheese we had used in breakfast eggs that morning. You could use most anything with a scent your dog will perk up for--peanut butter, a tiny dab of yogurt, or even chicken broth. I wouldn't recommend meat due to spoilage. Remember, your dog may not find all the plants you sow for him.

Let's Do Some Nosework!

After I coated the rag with the cheese, I tore up the rag into small bits and dropped them in bushes, behind trees along our path, and even under large Sycamore leaves. Thankfully it wasn't a windy day, so they stayed put and Tanner had the opportunity to upturn them while following his nose. This game has been great fun!

We've tested each of the four scents I recommend and Tanner has approved them all, while finding cheese the most thrilling. Your dog will have his own favorites. Please let me know what he enjoyed best.

Placing Tanner on an extra-long leash, I set out with him after first offering a sniff of the cheese bag before discarding it in the trash can. I could immediately see his eyes perk up and his nose wiggle. I decided NOT to teach him the command "Find", since I'm not eager to train a hound. However, the message was clear as we left the yard. His nose was in high gear in search of cheese! If your dog IS a hound, go ahead and use that command. Why not let him enjoy performing his favorite game!

If you're using these themed activities to continue to extend your senior's training, by all means offer a treat when your Fido is successful. This can also aid in assuring that he doesn't eat the rag while licking the delicious taste from it. Simply make an exchange--the rag for the treat. Keep the snacks small to watch his weight, but do encourage his enthusiasm with this--or another--desired reward. If your dog is fighting a battle of the bulge, offer a favorite toy or a loving belly rub at the end of your expedition to let her know what a good job she did.

After four days of this Canine scent work game with Tanner, I'm pleased to report he has definitely earned an A in nosework. While I'm not expecting the same results in hearing, that's okay. My goal is to develop better focus on each of his senses, not to mope over their diminishing level of acuity. That's what #SilverSlippers is all about.

Stopping Leash Biting

When you’re walking your dog does he ever decide to play a little tug-o-war with the leash? Do you find this to be a little annoying or downright uncontrollable? This is a pretty common problem that a lot of people are dealing with. This is something that I help a lot of my clients with, as well as a lot of shelter dogs.

Why do dogs even find this to be enjoyable? The simple answer is because the dog’s behavior is reinforced. The dog wants to play tug, and if he gets any sort of tug back, that causes more tugging. It’s a vicious cycle.

So what can we do to prevent this cycle from happening? My answer is to be proactive,

instead of reactive. What I mean by this is instead of waiting for the dog to do it, and then trying to figure out what to do, give him something to do. Some examples of things he can be doing are, looking at you, touching your hand, “leaving” the leash, and walking nicely by your side. These all sound pretty simple and in fact they are. All we have to do is practice cueing our dogs to do those things and reward those behaviors. This will cause those behaviors to happen more frequently in the future. In the video below I demonstrate how to do all these things.

Remember to stay patient, upbeat, and to have some high value treats. The combination of these three things will help you achieve your goal.

With Spring almost here, the All Things Dog Blog clan is heading for snow country for a little trekking, skiing and family bonding, before the snow disappears. Oliver enjoyed last year's first snowy experience so much that he's tagging along to get some more hiking in the white stuff. When he saw me packing his warm coat, I think he figured out where we were headed--heaven, of course!

Dear Michael,

I have a toy poodle that is about 7 years old. She is prissy and fearful of bigger dogs. Our neighborhood is like dog central. Mostly larger dogs but a few small ones like Chihuahuas and a Boston Terrier, plus a few crosses or rescued mutts. When I walk Muffin she is always interested in visiting other small dogs. She’s not playful but she does sniff and sort of say hello in a doggy way. Sometimes she will even stop to see a medium-sized dog like one cocker that lives around the corner. But when we see a bigger dog she will snap and growl if we get too close. I have to avoid these dogs and their owners so that Muffin doesn’t get herself into trouble. I don’t want her to get hurt. Is there a way to help her understand when a larger dog is friendly and ok to say hello to? I don’t know how to help her with this. Any tips you have would be appreciated.

Dear Janet,

My heart really goes out to your little poodle. Life is complicated, so full of unknowns. I can really empathize. It’s hard to know who is safe and who is a threat. Why is he looking at me like that? Is she up to no good? Can I trust that one? While our brains are asking and processing all these questions, our emotions (think gut level) are sorting through memories and trying to fill in gaps where memories are lacking. We need to know how to handle every potential social interaction, and antisocial threat for that matter, and we sometimes only have seconds to figure it all out. It’s hard. And we are humans, supposedly the smartest animals on the planet.

Now scale all that down to your prissy little poodle (we really shouldn’t call her that, it’s not nice). But seriously, what’s a dog to think? She’s little. The big dogs, they’re really big (could be 5-10 time her size). And, who knows how the big dogs roll on any given day. One wrong choice can be fatal. For real. Better to be safe than sorry, right? Maybe that’s what she’s thinking.

But no one wants to live in fear. We can all agree on that. And you want to help, which is nice. And I want to help you, too. So, let’s sort this out.

Have your dog’s back. If you needed help with a tough situation, what would you want. An advocate maybe? Someone looking out for your best interests? A coach, perhaps? Exactly. Having your dog’s back includes two things. 1) Teaching her what do to at any given moment. I literally like to teach my dogs to look to me for instructions (like a friend asks for advice) when they are unsure of a situation. Don’t bite, don’t bark, check in with me. As you progress you can teach more advanced skills, like how to interact, sniff and otherwise greet dogs on a loose leash. The second part of having your dog’s back 2) Protect her from situations she’s not ready to handle yet. We humans are always in such a hurry. Hurry up prissy (seriously, no name calling) and get over it already. Well, let me tell you, that doesn’t work. If your dog looks unsure, steer her away from the big guys and gals. There’s no shame in that. Every growl-snap blow-up solidifies her fear and sets back your training considerably. Take your time. Work smart.

Teach her that she is safe. If you use reinforcement-based training to teach her how to handle herself when big dogs are around (look to you for instructions etc.), you can actually help her learn that she’s not in any real danger. A good qualified dog behavior consultant who understands desensitization and counter conditioning can help with this. All your dog needs to know is that you will protect her and that seeing big dogs means good things (not bad) are about to happen. Specifically, she’s going to get treats for following your simple instructions. Every encounter with a big dog comes with structure as well as your praise and treats. It’s subtle, but this teaches your dog that she’s safe (not in any real danger) when big dogs are around.

Support good choices. Let’s watch how this plays out. When you notice your dog making good behavior choices (especially when she sees big dogs), be there to support those choices. Praise her. Treat her. Smile and let her know she’s being a brave girl. Here are some good dog choices to be on the lookout for:

Checking in with you on her own (not barking)
Steering clear of the dog on her own (as you’ve shown her do to many times before)
Approaching the other dog slowly on her own (don’t force this)
Allowing the dog to sniff while she’s calm on a loose leash (your behavior coach can help you get to this level).

How do you measure success? At first, I look for lower intensity reactions from the dog, like less barking or choosing to walk away rather than snap. I also look for quicker recovery times from the dog, responding faster to your directions if she gets in past her comfort level and barks or snaps. In the long run, we aim for calm social interactions. There’s a lot we can do and there is help available to you. When all is said and done, though, it’s up to the dog. She may end up being more comfortable hanging with the little dogs. Maybe that’s just how she rolls.

A Joyful Journey

CARRIE: Finally, the main reason I started this workout regimen was to find a way to build strength and flexibility at home while bonding with my dogs. It’s working so well that I am building a deeper bond with Tanner and Oliver, while seeing benefits for my health which I know will be helpful going forward. Can you elaborate on these benefits based on your relationship with Nikki B. and her participation in your practice?

JESS: Getting in touch with the messages your body has for you may take some time and practice. As you relax into your poses, enjoying the deep breathing, focusing your awareness on nothing but the rhythm and quality of your breath, you will eventually begin to read your inner self; physically, emotionally and spiritually. Some days you’ll be out of sorts and other days you will find that you’re on top of your game and successfully practicing poses you never before thought possible. Your mind will make new connections with your body, allowing you to continue to progress in your practice.

Growing Closer, Day by Day

Your dog, just like Nikki B, will play an important role in this process by helping you to relax at times when you may otherwise be distracted and unable to focus on the present moment. Animals have amazing skills for calming us if we allow them to share their ability to stay with us in the moment. There is much we can learn from our pets and much that they can learn from us if we allow them the opportunity to do so. That’s what is so great about doga! Taking the time to strengthen the bond, not only with yourself, but with your furry friend(s), will yield more benefits to the body, mind and spirit than you ever imagined.

CARRIE: Thanks, Jess. This has been great way to share my #WeeklyWag tips for bonding. Your insights will most certainly help us all with moving forward in our doga practice. I started out liking the idea of partner poses with my dogs, but surprisingly, now find that I’m using Tanner more than Oliver. He seems to love being an important part of my practice when he is used as a balancing aid or block. Sometimes he breaks into a smile that shows off his enjoyment.

Treat, Please!

Oliver is coming along. He’s comfortable in certain positions that I hold him in as a weight, while others make him a bit anxious. I’m trying to tune into his anxieties and skip those poses that seem to make him uncomfortable. After all, it’s supposed to be fun for both of us, right? When cats and dogs live together they sometimes egg each other on. Like today, Oliver let Patches know that she shouldn't be on a dog bed. He was quite indignant!

But Patches does more than her share of dishing out the trouble-making. During our #SuperDogSunday event recently, she was insistent on stealing a Zuke's treat from the open pouch I had in our #doga photo shoot. The dogs and I were busy videotaping a short segment and she totally took over, pawing at the package, knocking it over and photo-bombing us bigtime.

#SilverSlippers: Inspire Your Dog Walks

I've been walking dogs for more years than I care to admit. They make good motivation and great company. Beyond that, though, I can't help but notice that as they age they need something different--a bit of a changing up--not only in pace but in approach. Between Tanner and I, we're totally almost 130 years of life experience. We're making some changes to enjoy our walks in different ways. Read on....

Walking your senior dog has never been so safe or as fun as it will be starting right now. After a recent walk with Tanner--just the two of us--we seemed to be on the same page. We're both approaching our Golden years, although his will be more Golden (aka Retriever) than mine. :) We'll be working to share our tips for walking more safely, having more fun, and getting more inspiration out of your daily walks, even as you and your dog age and slow down a bit. It's time to stop and smell the pee-mail, or maybe just the flowers. :)

Before I commence with tips and ideas, inspiration and problem-solving, I'd love to hear from you. What are your issues with walking, both for you and for your senior dog? Tell me all about it in the comments and give me your no holds barred version of what you need help with. I'm out to find more ways to make our dogs' Golden walks, as well as our own, more fun, more safe, and more inspiring. Enter #SilverSlippers, our series on ways to modify, improve and enjoy your walks even more as your dog ages.

First, let's be clear. #SilverSlippers is not just a series for senior dogs. Just as the name may intimate, silver is a microstep younger than Golden. Tanner is not yet ready for a meandering walk to the mailbox and back. He needs more stimulation, variety and fun. Finally, the second part of the name--slippers--refers to our walking, and how it may be changing from an athletic pursuit to one more aptly described as a time for wonder, reflection, bonding and soul-searching, while still providing exercise, of course.

All that said, I invite you to join us for ideas to theme your walks, changeup your approach, and give your dog some much-needed brainwork along the way. This is our opportunity to learn from one another and find new and enjoyable ways to keep us all walking happily for years to come. Yoga Practice Continues on #FidosFreebieFriday

During our recent #SuperDogSunday, Tanner, Oliver and I enjoyed adding some football themes into our photo shoot. It was great fun to see the photos that came of these efforts. As I told Paris just the other day, the boys are now automated at convening on the mat as soon as I place it on the floor. #Doga practice has become a fun thing to do with mom. I'm loving it!

As my Tree Pose comes along, little by little, the boys are now discovering that they don't have to run as often, as I'm finally able to hold this pose for a few counts without wobbling. Oliver is glad that he doesn't have to scatter quite as often now. Eye contact is a good sign that the boys are trusting me and that we are all having fun. #greatbonding You can join us by checking out the short, instructional video series and modification tips at our Doga page.

CARRIE: I can’t help but notice that a midday yoga break helps me to wake up and re-energize. Of course, there are certain poses that have exemplary results in perking me up--most notably are the inverted poses that bring blood to brain. I’m also beginning to become more aware of some aspects of my body’s messaging. These status updates I become aware of would never have been noticed without yoga guidance from you, Jess, as well as a couple of others who have helped me along this path. Can you give us some of the mind-body connection stuff that we’ll gain when participating in frequent yoga practice? This is something I haven’t delved into with my readers, so we’d love to hear your thoughts.

JESS: It is quite impossible to practice yoga without gaining a better understanding of yourself--physically, emotionally and spiritually. This is because yoga forces us to stay in the present moment. We send our awareness inward, to focus on the movement of the breath. The movement of our breath, then, matches the physical movement of our bodies as we transition from one pose to another. This synchronization of the breath with the body recruits the involvement of our spirit, ultimately making the practice of yoga a very powerful mind-body-spirit experience. As I mentioned earlier, this has a lot to do with the fact that in yoga, we are working within the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for our resting and digesting, as opposed to the sympathetic nervous system, which is what we use as a fight-or-flight response to stress.

Because of the fact that yoga incorporates the practice of strength building, endurance, balance and flexibility work, we are really increasing the circulation of blood throughout the body and mobilizing all of our internal organs, which is what is responsible for many of the physical benefits of yoga. It’s amazing how much more energy we find after the practice of even the most basic of poses, like Legs Up The Wall, because of the fact that it brings fresh, oxygenated blood to the brain.

Many people do find that it is quite challenging to silence the busy thoughts of the mind during the practice of yoga, especially at first, but even if you are able to focus on the breath, and only the breath, for just a few minutes in each pose, you will instantly notice how much more aware you are, not only of your physical state of being, but of your emotional and spiritual state, as well. Just as I shared before, this increase in body awareness is what prevents injury in our practice and eventually, what makes us safer in our day to day lives.

The increase in emotional and spiritual awareness that comes from the practice of yoga will yield even more benefits: self acceptance, self love, loss of ego, peace, contentment, freedom, empowerment and pure joy.In the case of doga, we’re adding the synergies provided by bonding with our best friends, our dogs.
