10 Tips for Fido's Longest Life

I’m smitten with my dog Luke. And like most of you, I want my dog to live forever. I dream of growing old with my husband, children and grandchildren, and our beloved rescue mutt.

While immortality may be a stretch, a twenty year life span may not be. I have no control over Luke’s DNA, but I do have direct control over many factors that are proven to extend longevity and quality of life.

Want to help your own dog maximize his potential? Consider these ten tips for transforming your dog into his bionic alter ego!

1. Keephim lean! It’s common sense. It’s scientifically proven. Dogs with a healthy body condition score live longer (2 years longer in one study) than their chubby counterparts.

2. Don’t over-vaccinate/over-medicate. Vaccine protocols should be customized for your dog’s age, lifestyle, and environment. Medications may be necessary, but understand that every one has side effects.

3. Become a label reader. You are what you eat, and so is your dog. Most dogs in America are eating extruded dry kibble made of corn and “by-products”, with a hefty shelf life. Diet directly correlates to wellness, or lack thereof. Quality food, with meat as the first ingredient, is pricey. But what you invest in nutrition will be saved in veterinary bills.

4. Brush his teeth daily. 80% of dogs over the age of two have dental disease. This is a sad statistic, because, in most cases, it is preventable. Brushing helps prevent gingivitis–which can lead to internal organs being pelted by mouth bacteria via the bloodstream.

5. Schedule regular chiropractic adjustments. Western medicine evolved for crisis intervention. Chiropractic medicine seeks to prevent dis-ease and restore balance. Chiropractic adjustments free the nervous system of interference so the body can do what God created it to do–heal itself!

6. Don’t underestimate the importance of nail care. Long nails are not just a cosmetic concern. They change the way a dog’s toes interface with the ground. Long toenails impact a dog’s gait and posture, resulting in chronic stress, compensations, and injuries.

7. Provide your dog daily exercise sessions. Dogs in the wild MOVE exceedingly more than our domestic dogs. Gaiting is vital to a dog’s physical and mental well being.

8. Don’t underestimate the importance of your dog’s mental health. If you live with a dog from the herding group, you understand this perfectly! Dogs need appropriate mental stimulation based on their genetic bent.

9. Consider adding dietary supplements. My “snake oil” panacea is Omega-3 Fatty acids, based on deficiencies in our processed diets. Eskimos please disregard.

10. Schedule regular veterinary examinations with a doctor who makes time to be thorough. Bloodwork and urinalysis provide a non-invasive window into your dog’s health. Establishing a baseline, monitoring trends, and early intervention if abnormalities are detected, are all investments in your dog’s quantity and quality of life.

I'm in one of those weird moods today, so you're going to have to use your imagination based on the titles of the images below. Each of the videos I'm sharing came from Youtube or a similar tool. Rather than take stills for each image below, you got whatever popped up on my screen when I entered the links. I apologize in advance, but like I said, I'm in a mood.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you'll at least click 1 of the videos. They're all great,

but not if you don't watch them.

Next week I'm looking for all your help to bring me up and out of this tough week. You see, I'm on vacation so I'll probably return exhausted and in need of a good nap before I can work with a clear head.

Here's what I do know. I'll be preparing for our Twitter Party for Swheat Scoop soon and I'd love to get your input on litter box tips. Care to toss out your best ideas? I'd love to hear them. What's more, Patches is looking forward to them as well. Living with a house full of dogs can make a girl crazy sometimes, especially when she's the senior citizen. Bonding by the Names: Toy Identities!

"Yes, Tanner. That's right boy." This is a game we've enjoyed greatly over the years. Tanner has at times known the names of upwards of a dozen toys. Currently, not so much. I think I've let this game slide in favor of newer experiments.

You may enjoy bonding with your dog over this game, just as we did. Start with a favorite toy, one that your dog frequently brings out on his own. Here's how I began to teach Tanner the names:

I took his favorite toy and placed it on the floor within sight, making sure that the floor was clean of other toys to distract him while first learning.
I asked Tanner to get the toy, giving it a simple name that could not easily be confused with other words in his vocabulary. It's important to make it an intuitive name for you also, so YOU won't forget the name.
If your dog doesn't immediately pick up the toy, motion to it or offer it to him. When he takes it, reward, praise and throw a party, repeating the name of the toy frequently.
Continue this reward system until your dog understands what the name of the toy is and will go and get it when you place it farther and farther away from him.

It's that easy; honest! Just remember to keep it fun and go at your dog's own pace. Stick with one toy at a time until he's 100% accurate each and every time you request the toy.

Until then, do not move to another toy.

Once your dog gets to know a few of his toys' names, you can start the real fun. Place the toys in various locations in a room, asking him to fetch one by name. Praise as soon as he responds by heading toward the correct toy. This is a terrific brain game as well as a nice rainy day activity. Don't forget to let Fido know how proud you are of his new skills!

Zuke's Lovers #WorkLikeaDog for Prizes!

There's one thing for sure this morning. I'm whipped from all the fun at last night's #WorkLikeaDog Twitter Party. We had such fun watching all the #WorkLikeaDog conversation with @ParisandJohn, getting answers to questions from @ZukesPets, learning a boatload about Zuke's from @DogTipper, and soaking up some training tips from yours truly, @AllThingsDog.

And then there were the fun photos from our guests like @FurkidParent, shown at left. We laughed out loud at some of them that were shared by @5MinutesforFido and @HollywoodDogs. I'm starting to think that Oliver has gotten the hang of this Twitter Party fun!

Many thanks to @WoofWoofMama for acting as our Chief Watchdog and Help Desk. With trouble brewing from an API update at Twitter, she had her hands full and did a terrific job of aiding our guests. Parties like this one don't come without some hiccups, but we were in good hands. By notifying guests that Twitter, Tweetchat and Tweetgrid were all having problems, she herded many of our guests over to Hootsuite or Tweetdeck for an enjoyable and highly active party, despite the

challenges. Please feel free to give her a shout out of thanks!

Speaking of thank you's, I've got to send one to my awesome Event Barkers partner, @DogTipper. Her fun Q&A about dogs at work was one of the hits of last night's event. We all had a good laugh and enjoyed sharing our pet's likely behavior in numerous office-related scenarios. Thanks for all of your participation, as well.

Natural Balance Still Feeding the Need

For each new LIKE on Facebook, Natural Balance will give a pound of food to rescue pets to Feed the Need. These pets at L.A. rescues depend on the generosity of those that care--like you! The goal is to give away 15,000 pounds of food. That will fill a lot of need. Imagine how many tummies will be satisfied with all that chow. In my home with 3 dogs, 15,000 lbs. of food would feed the whole gang for nearly a year. I'm really hoping these rescues have faster turnaround in placement than a year.

Water Fun 4 Dogs on Mutt Monday

Hurricane season and the rainy season have both arrived in Florida, along with plenty of heat and humidity. Tanner could not be more thrilled!

Besides playing in the sprinklers that we happen upon while walking, Tanners loves to swim, absolutely insists on splashing in every puddle we pass, and won't miss a chance to swim or play fetch whenever the opportunity presents itself. With a pool and a lake in our backyard, he gets more than his share of water time, which is fine with him.

The low pressure system that pushed through South Florida this past week brought several inches of much needed rain. While Oliver and Jacque were pookie over the rainy, dreary days, Tanner celebrated each opportunity to go out in the rain to take care of business. He really did not understand why Jacque and Oliver were in a hurry to go back into the house. We've used all of our doggie towels more than once and he enjoyed every single duck he attempted to catch. Thankfully, he was unsuccessful.

As you can see, even if a swimming pool is not available to your dog, there are plenty of

water opportunities. Our dog park has misters that many of the dogs enjoy basking in--Tanner included! Another great way to give Fido a cooling off is a kiddie pool. With several inches of water inside, your pup can run and play, splashing through the water as he goes. This sort of fun is good for keeping your pup cool on hot, Summer days.

In preparation for #WorkLikeaDog, I've been busy putting together some training tips. I thought it would be a manageable list, but little did I know what would roll out when I started typing. I'm planning to share quite a few during the Twitter Party for those of you who enjoy learning new ways to work with your dog. Here's some of the overflow that simply won't get included in the party. Hope to see you there on Tuesday for more tips, Zuke's info and prizes :)

Dog touchy about brushing? Start w/soothing massage and work up, using back of brush first. Praise softly.
With practice, praise and reward, Fido will allow inspection of ears, teeth, tail, body, paws/pads.
Help Fido associate grooming w/pleasure. Play soft music, speak sweetly, treat when successful.
Get your dog used to crowds and people by visiting your pet supply store on the weekend when busiest.
If Fido pulls toward people or dogs to greet, start teaching the ‘Leave It’ command, treating accordingly.
Another strategy for pulling toward people is to use the ‘Watch Me’ command and a

treat, getting his ATTN back on you.
Balance these ‘Leave It’ experiences with time at the dog park to meet and greet off-leash. Gr8 for socialization!
Remember that training your dog makes him a better family member and more enjoyable companion. He’s worth it!
Relish your training time as a bonding experience and remember to end on a high note with praise and a treat.

Purebred Rescues Offer Adoption Options

Are you thinking you can only bond with your preferred breed? It's okay. I understand. Today I've got some solutions to help you locate an adoptable dog in that breed. By adopting, you'll be giving a loving home to a dog who may otherwise spend his days alone in a kennel. Wouldn't that make you feel just dandy?!

We've all heard the reasons that some families do not wish to adopt. Among them is a highly common one: "We want a purebred dog." When a family decides that they just absolutely have to have a Boston Terrier or a Labrador Retriever--you name the breed--there are still options for helping a homeless pet find family with you.

Many would-be dog owners are unaware that breed specific rescues exist. These are often not the ones you see each weekend at large pet retail stores, running adoption events. More likely, you'll find their listings in the newspaper: Golden Retriever Rescue 407-XXX-XXXX.

I'd like to help you locate the specific breed rescue you seek. Please give adoption a chance. There's a dog out there waiting for you to take him home. At least go meet one or two and see what you find.

For the first time in my life I have 3 purebred dogs in my home. They all came to me via different rescue/adoption avenues. Our latest addition, Jacque, was put up for adoption when his owner learned she had a terminal illness. He was still a puppy, maybe 6 months old at the time. You just never know what you'll find if you don't give adoption a try. We found Jacque through Petfinder.com.

You'll find plenty of purebred dogs on Petfinder. Just pick your breed at the center of the page when you visit, add in the other selections and off you'll go to a nice listing of pets in your area. You pick the sex, age, and location.

Tanner's 'show quality' breeder found his unsatisfactory conformation to be disconcerting,

and did not want Tanner on his record. Seriously; I'm not making this stuff up! Tanner was on his way to HSUS when I intercepted, walking away thrilled to have a knobby-headed, too-tall and lanky, Golden Retriever with the exact disposition that I hoped for. I love him because of his imperfections, not in spite of them!

Tanner was more than pleased to review this comfy, water-resistant bed, and will continue to use it poolside so that he can take a cushy nap in the sun after his daily swim. That's the only time I let him lounge in the sun--when wet. This helps him stay cool as the water evaporates from his coat.

The "I Missed Blogpaws" Giveaway

This office can only hold so much stuff. Oliver's bed is under a guest's chair and review products are on shelves. Yet I still have an overflow to floor space, which is definitely not plentiful--the floorspace that is. Today's giveaway will help me clear out some extra goodies from the Blogpaws conference swag that will thrill a blogger or pet lover who did not attend.

Inside the official Blogpaws swag bag--which is uber nice canvas with a zipper-closure and pockets--is the official Blogpaws Conference Tshirt and a 2013 Natural Balance Calendar, filled with great photos

of Norman and Tillman. This prize is perfect for the pet blogger who did not make it to this year's conference, but will be enjoyed by anyone who can use these products.

Oliver, my sidekick and PR front man for this year's event, had a ton of great experiences. I'm pretty sure if he had a calendar, Vegas would be on it for next year. He met Norman the Scooter dog, Molly the Safety Dog, Schmitty the Weather Dog and Charles the Monarch, as well as many of our fellow bloggers' pets and Service Dogs of all kinds. Oliver did not quite know what to do with the ferrets, but he sniffed curiously and was suitably respectful.

With stops along the way to visit family, Oliver was one tuckered out little dude that slept very well for the entire trip. I would love to have gotten some pics of us on the highway, but since I was driving, that was not an option.

I enjoyed speaking with one exhibitor about safety testing being done for various types of car travel implements for dogs. Her exhibit included a smashed metal crate that had been through a car accident. It was a bit scary to think of my dog inside it.

When I described my safety gig for the trip, she nodded approvingly. Oliver has a Pet

Buckle brand crash-tested seat belt that was attached to the luggage tie downs using the adapter provided. I seatbelted his crate down in the middle of the car and attached the PetBuckle seatbelt to his harness, while he was inside the crate. The idea was double protection, and luckily we didn't need it.

Mutt Monday: Greener Flea Control

After years of hot spots and skin issues on our sweet Xena, we eventually switched to an organic approach to everything: food for both ourselves and our pets, lawn care, pet pest prevention as well as housecleaning products. No sooner did we make these changes than our Xena finally ceased her constant series of skin troubles. It is clear now that she was reacting to pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers on our lawn, where she enjoyed lounging each morning. I wish I had known sooner.

Now we're on a quest to do everything possible to keep Tanner and Oliver toxin-free for a long, healthy life. Below I've shared some of the many posts I've written on how we manage these pests. You may find yourself having an aha moment when you read some of them. Please feel free to share your thoughts or leave your questions in the comments section. I'll do my best to help with anything you'd like to learn more about.

Bonding with a New Dog: You & Fido

Jacque's Typical Inquisitive Look

You may have noted that our family has taken on a new member. While my mom recovers from an injury, Jacque has moved in here, acclimating well. He walks with us, plays with Tanner and Oliver, hunts lizards, and generally seems to have suffered little emotional damage as a result of his displacement.

At first, I felt like I was caring for a foster dog, with the obvious difference that Jacque has been a part of our lives since I helped my mother adopt him 3 1/2 years ago. He is, as the adoption agent told us, a dear little fella that has a similar ability to adapt and bond to that I have seen in Tanner and Oliver. The threesome seem to have fallen in line as a group that is clearly 'family'.

With that said, it has been my goal recently to help my mom and her little buddy maintain their relationship and keep Jacque from becoming anxious over their separation. Frequent visits have apparently done the trick and Jacque continues to show no sign of anxiety.

While much of what I just shared has been no great surprise to me, I did find myself wondering how the rest of my family would fare in the bonding department. During my 9 days away for the Blogpaws conference, I've learned that Jacque is definitely growing on both my daughter and husband. Without Oliver in the house, Jacque was drawn to other family members for more interaction and affection, ending in a good experience for everyone.

As it turns out, my absence with Oliver was actually a good opportunity for Jacque to come out of his exclusive doggie relationships and push himself to get better acquainted with other family members.

This concept is easy enough to apply to 2nd, 3rd and 4th pets in your home as well. You may have noticed that your first pet is generally more closely bonded to you as a result of having had exclusive time with you in the beginning.

If you have a pet that you'd like to bond more closely with, there may be hope for your relationship by simply giving your other pets a brief vacation. Perhaps they can spend the weekend with a friend or family member while you focus on the pet you'd like to work on relationship building with.This simple procedure may take a few trials, if all you can spare is a weekend, but the effort is always worth it.

For me, I can see that Jacque and I will need some one-on-one time without Oliver in order to truly build a deeper relationship. This task is going on my To Do list. After all, look at that face. How could I resist getting into that little head of his to better understand him!
