This is article two in the series about personal branding.
Previously I spoke about Infographics and how fascinating they are and what an impact they can make in your personal branding.

Web Presence is important.

Well, Web presence is similar in many fashion. But the elephant in the room is Social platforms. When MySpace was launched in August 2003, it spoke directly to those who were keen to build a socially cohesive brand. Facebook followed suit in Feb 2004. The obvious about the two is personal networking space.
In the previous article on Infographs, it was clear to me that the Social Network web space is in need to collation tools. And there’s plenty of API integrators out there who can help with the collation. But Infographics, would only serve the purpose of reflecting on your LTD (Life-To-Date) brand. With the use of the likes of Vizualize.me you can then draw on the timelines produced of your career. Same can be done with Facebook and Twitter.
Web Presence is important. It is important for a personal brand to exist and flourish. Models, Artists, Musicians and…wait for it… ACADEMICS! Use it to highlight, connect, inter-connect, communicate and EXIST. To the rest of the world.

If the question was to be asked”:
“Will you be remember or known for your existence in 2112"?”
What would be your answer?
Remember Star-Trek? That is what appeared on the show over and over again. One of the crew members walked to a tablet screen or holographic room and relived (through recorded data!) history as it was recorded by some famous or rich person.
Well, Web Presence for your personal brand should include both your favourable history and story of your life (and no, no one wants to know if you were thief, but it would be more interesting if you are a Hippy or Pantsula of the ‘80s)
Start building your brand. Start with today and work your way backwards, keeping the future in mind. Pictures, Videos, achievements etc. add more voooma to your personal brand on the web.
Lastly, Twitter, my favourite at present. It is there for your to speak to other people. it is not too different from MXit and SMS. it is just more accessible, cheaper with a lot more connections.
Enjoy your existence, keep record for eternity!

In this exercise, I overlooked a lot of things. Recently, I came across Infographics for alls sort of things. This, I came to learn more about in conjuction with "BigData".

I am fascinated by both. During my career spanning nearly 20 years, I've witnessed technology, data, network convergence and divergence. I've learned to adapt and integrate a lot of the changes we see on the web, in the workplace, in our social life into my knowledge base.

Infographics, have therefore come to play a vital role in telling a story of any topic I am interested in. Data on the other hand, has become the very cornerstone of decision making, modelling, influencing and impacting. By including a signature into my emails pointing to my LinkedIn Infograph, I can influence and impact the how those I engage with regularly view me and my work life in the 20 years that passed.

I've come to appreciate the importance of my personal brand and the elements that make it what it is. That acknowledgement for me is important because I can change those elements that impact it negatively.

Words have disappeared! Clearly - are we gonna get to understand the Cloud computing? Simply Yes.

Apple and Google are both pioneers and always in the forefront of technological development within this generation. Apple's history is long and makes for a good novel to read. Google story is a heroic content of superheroes!

But the two are not doing justice to the Cloud computing in the immediate. But rather provide for a healthy, juicy competition (an always welcome ingredient in advancing anything)

Recently, I got involved in a project to uncover, develop and grow Cloud Service offerings (sounds like a self-help book, considering). The vast questions, the varying answers and understandings of Cloud, leaves the question: are we going to get to define and understand Cloud Computing anytime soon? I wish I can remain as calm in my thoughtout response and still say yes. My kids wont get to have a clear definition of Cloud Computing up until they reach or finish matric (Grade 12).

But I love the competition right now. Not only with Google and Apple! but as a global phenomenon!

Viva Cloud, Viva!

Interesting on how I ended up on this site today of all days.

The first thing is a memory - a very distant memory. Where I had previously worked with SQL 2000 as a DBA more than 4 years ago. I quite this line and became a Security Systems Specialist. This essentially meant I never get to see a SQL console again anytime soon. Alas, it has come beckoning on my doorstep. Partly because this is in my CV as one of the technologies I intimately understand.

As I stand - none of it seems true.

The first question that popped in my mind after a collegue sent some SQL script files to run, was where do I go? How do I do that again? more than 8 hours later, I'm about to answer that question.

Here are the basic steps to get me going:

1. Find a server on the domain I can use to install MS-SQL Express 2008 (note I found out the hard way that I needed the Advanced Edition with reporting installed).

> don't forget to check your pre-requisites i.e dotnet 3.5 at least; Windows Installer 4.2 (if you are running Windows 2003)

2. Download and install MSQ SQL 2008 Management Studio (another lesson in why you should always revist technologies you've worked with before).

> Server Configuration checker also comes in handy - it is included with SQL 2008!

Now that the basics are out the way, we can proceed with what got me stuck in the first place - .sql script files!

After installing all the required components, and several reboots. The server is ready for use with Microsoft SQL 2008 R2.

(needless to say - if it goes perfectly - you are darn lucky!)

Amazing: After all that trouble and installing all components with SQL Express Advance Edition, Management Studio, Advanced Tools. Voila! I can simply double click the script and it opens in the SQLQuery Debugger.

The first step from here is to establish whether the sql script has any issues (problems) simple things such as path defined for pointing to a SQL database could be incorrect.

for example: My Data path points to E:\MSSQL\DATA
but my script points to c:\Program Files\MS SQL\DATA or something like that - which simple has to be changed.

Also my database is located in the data path that I defined. - instead of the one supplied. (but that's another lesson in scripting).

to be continued....

At least that the thought that crossed my mind when I read the article on the NY Times web Hollywood’s Whiteout

But the truth is far from it. A few days ago, I wrote about Black Debt, based on a feature by CNN. But what I did not mention in the article, is the successes of indebtedness of Black Celebrities. Perhaps because the scale weighs very lightly on those who have fallen in the darkness of debts. But the success enjoyed in the Film industry both in the Diaspora and in Africa, is far more staggering than it appears in the lime light.

Thus, the NYT article seems be on the spot, at least as far as US whiteout is concerned. Is this racially driven? I doubt it. But an evaluation of the status quo. Let me take you back 2010 in Black films, or perhaps the nostalgia of Tyler Perry’s films which touch Black people in the US.

My recent favourite, “For Coloured Girls”, (check the Wiki)and I have tweeted and wrote about it on my FaceBook page. Whys is this film not at the Oscar’s or better yet, why has it not appeared on the Awards circuit around the world. The simplest answers (and a pain staking one) is … the release date was beyond the required release date for the nomination.

But….this is not true. Rule 03 of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says different. So simply, this film should have been in. Unless I missed something.

Technorati Tags: Oscars Academy Award Rules

But nothing I missed on the list, as the NYT article continues, the question in my mind increases and gains and upsetting momentum. Is it racial? Is it Talent? Is it the flavour of the year?

I am disturbed by this. In over a decade, I came across a film that inspires a movement. A film that dissects the ills of society in its deepest form. This film, I found, to conjoin its predecessors to form a collage of films that raises questions about how we, as Africans, can allow ills to continue to ravage our fibres through and through.

If you are wondering what I am blubbing about, here is a quick short list. Tell me if it draws on the same fibres as I see it.

Also look at http://mghardie.wordpress.com/2010/02/15/30-greatest-black-movies-part-1/

American Gangster – about a black man who becomes a drug lord. –[Denzel Washington]

Jason Lyric – about a young woman who needs a reason to leave the ghetto. [Jada Pinkett Smith;Bokeem Woodbine;Forest Whitaker]

Precious – about a young teenager abused. [Gabourey Sidibe; Mo'Nique]

While the above is a reflection on the most recent films, I think you get the idea. What is available for The Academy of Motion Pictures as a selection on black films? As much as they venture across the 4 Oceans all the way to Australia, across the Atlantic etc. to find films suitable to be called OSCAR Nominees. They can venture to other places, not to fill a quota but to get the broad audience they so miss in their eggshells.

Black debt - feature by CNN

Are we waiting to become an issue? I think this is the general state of black economy. When politicians on the African continent speak about economic emancipation, they refer to a socialist agenda rather than to state of wealth. For most ruling parties, economic empowerment us for those who've sacrificed for the current political agenda.

I dare you to ask 10 of your black/African friends if they will realize wealth in the next two years. I doubt you'll get and honest answer.

The series featured by CNN: "Almighty Debt", so far I have seen the first episode. Books such as "The Capitalist Nigger" have also covered this topic from a different angle. BUT they are satin the same thing. Are you listening?

I live on South Africa. I would not have it any other way! For the simple reason I love my country!

Several articles and coverage of this has been done by many other bloggers and web writers. George Alexander(sic) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/george-alexander/my-review-of-cnns-almight_b_771155.html posted a piece on it. One of many I had to read before presenting my opinion on it. The Hinterland Gazette http://blackpoliticalthought.blogspot.com/2010/10/new-cnn-black-in-america-documentary.html, also had an interview with CNN's Soledad O'Brien.

This, the dark continent, is where all this is pointing to. The root of Black poverty and subsequently Black Wealth. This, the heart of the world Diamond rich plateau's and belts of Maize and Copper. Africa, is rich in minerals which over the past few millennia, it has been colonised and explored and exploited for those minerals.

But the thought of wealth for its inhabitants is as much an insult as it is a curse. The hierarchy of debt for any people, starts on two ends.

The first end, (1) individual and their contribution to the society they live in. This individualism is driven (in my opinion, but let me know what you think) by the following factors:

Education foundation. Are the core basics of literacy and numeracy in place? Are Life skills taught early enough as enabler? In Primary education, is personal finance taught and trained? Are business and systems thinking introduced early enough as an empowerment tool? – We have moved away from communal living and this is currently confided to semi-urban, peri-urban and rural South Africa.

A friend, Oscar, made a suggestion which works to explain some of the frustration above….http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trickle-down_economics -

Your boss wants it all!

Taking from Alicia Keys signature track

The flamboyance of romance

It is that time of the year when love is in the air and holds no boundaries! Lovers, single and coupled, look for that spark that reminds them of passion and romance.

Romance! A big word from where I am sitting. A word not frequent in my vocabulary nor in my word index. But of all other times in any given year since primary school, no where else are the words love and romance used interchangeably than the last few days!

It gets scary the commercial value behind it. Thus the flamboyance! If you understand that your girl friend wants to be pampered, ten you also understand that this is the worst time for your pocket to be doing it!

Post the valentines day nostalgia, it
Would be good to learn a new trick! Sony dump her. Pamper her with simple things. But you need to know
What tickles her fancy. What gets her exited to be your girl and not wishing you had Pounds and Euros. Simply, driving home from work, pickup the guilt free flowers at the street corner. It helps to know that Woolies sells excellent plant food. Your guilt free flowers will look like great quality expensive buy! one she will be talking about for a while. The simplicity of flowers I'd that you get away with less flamboyance and expenditure come valentines day!

You are forgiven long before you transgress Valentines extravaganza!

Take it from me. Quality costs but not always money. Time and bother are costs most guys are never willing to invest on. immaterial until someone comes and does it for you!

So, go out and spot the flower guy a R20 it is worth it
The Proverbial Best Practice Mantra

How often? How often? How often? have you had a consultant, a specialist, an expert, a professional…tell your bosses: Implement it with Best Practices!

I hear this all the time. Not because the pro’s and experts an consultant are right. But because my boss simply does not think I am worth what he pays me! (There I said it!)

So, the proverbial bite into the apple of Best Practices is that even ITIL.org has changed the reference to Good Practice. There is always a good way to do something. Don’t reinvent the wheel when you can do it the same way someone has done it.

If you are a business owner, then you’d be two minds about this:

1. Innovation requires thinking out of the box! that’s where you are willing to put your money.

2. Following precedence will save you money. Simply because it has been proven to work.

That said, each day (ask your IT Engineer/Administrator, and he will confirm the inevitable truth!) something goes wrong with your IT systems for one simple reason: Someone is being creative/innovative with your money! – Do you hear those ching $ chings $!!! That is money being poured right out of your pocket!

Let me get back to the interesting bits. IT Companies are profit makers like any other company. But since the Dot.com bubble, a lot (if not all of them) have realised that to stay in business, they need a service delivery model that builds relationships with customers. This model is based on giving the customer a hassle-free Service and make sure they build a long lasting relationship with you as a customer (Yes, I work for one of these companies). But the crucial factor, is that they need to apply Good Practices to the solutions implementation and daily operational support to your IT systems.

That little tit-bits said…

The frequency at which things go wrong is phenomenal. Thus a monitoring system – not to prevent but to detect when something goes wrong – this is an essential tool for your IT Administrator! A cost that would save you thousands!.

Next, is the indelible TechNet and online resources. These are essential tools. Mainly because – whatever challenge you have, someone has had it and found a solution and shared it with the world! So why not send you IT Administrator to those Geeky gatherings and forums? it will probably cost you $1,000 or loosely R8,000! – So think again about what you save on.

“Best Practice” or “Good Practice” whichever you choose, the fact remains, it is there for a reason. But this reason is not absolute. The fact that your business is unique with unique circumstances, means that the “Good Practice” baseline has to be adjustable. And someone has to make this determination (ref: Monitoring Systems). This is human computer interaction (#HCI) on another level, not your users but your administrators.

Show me a perfect system, I’ll show you a perfect universe. Better yet, I will show you a perfect person! All these are a fable! no doubt about it. Innovation is a continuous improvement thus there is no perfect anything.

There’s always room for improvement. The Best Practice Mantra means you need to find how it will best suite and work for you and your environment. And that only remains until something else changes or gets added to the environment, then “The Best Practice” has to be adjusted, improved, modified.

We insist every time on two things: Keep a record/track of changes, know how to reverse the changes if they are not suitable. If these two are not done, then you are definitely in trouble things will always break and you’ll always be chasing your tail trying to figure them out.

The bigger the environment, the more you will have to spend on monitoring both operation environment and the changing environment. Any good CIO knows that a good IT strategy has to have very good tools. If you are paying your CIO/CTO around $500K (R2mil), make sure you have a supporting IT CapEx and Opex of at least $20million (R100mil ).

Technorati Tags: CIO Strategy,IT Strategy,IT Best Practice,Best Practice vs Optimal Configuration,ITIL Service Strategy,IT Administration,Perfect systems,SCOM,Systems Monitoring

A memory to be lived

I count everyday like it's a new day! In particular a reference to the TABLET market which is very competitive and volatile. Each tablet maker is looking to advance the consumer drive behind their product. The consumer drive in question is the ability to attract the same quantities of sales as with Apple(tm) products.

The iPad has revolutionalised the UMPC market which Bill Gates spoke about over 6 years ago. Then as a departure point in an office conversation, and curiosity to hear what excites techno geeks in the office, I brought up the pending Samsung Tab running Windows7 and equally versatile.

Then suddenly cornered and challenged, I was asked to produce evidence to the latter. At the time it escaped my recollection. Getting accustomed to the touch means getting familiar with the spell checker and it's little quirks. I am loving it nevertheless.

As an avid photographer, I was hoping to get my hands on a MacBook pro and some good photo editor like the CS5 from Adobe with lite room and the other tidbits. Did I mention that I am writing this with an iPhone4's touchscreen keyboard.

Yes, I admit that I am a late adopter when it comes to tech gadgets.

This blog is starting on a completely wrong foot. I started working with VirtualBox (from Sun) a few months ago and recommended this to friends and associates alike.

The recent challenge I've had to deal with is "Host-Only" networking – having a virtual network strictly running between all the Virtual Machines (VM's) and the host only.

The article (blog) by Fook Sheng (using bridge networking on VirtualBox – 9/06/2009)

"NAT does not work, and surprisingly Host-only mode does not either... i don't know why.. it should be simple a bug or something wrong on my side.."

…left me challenged in deed. Sounds too old to mention but true otherwise.

So, to get started – I've setup VirtualBox ver. 3.2.12 – with two virtual NIC's one bridged and one internal network.

Bridged Network works – I get internet on the virtual machine via the host.

But Internal Network does not work (192.168.97.0 subnet 255.255.255.0) – to be more precise – from the VM (192.168.97.101) , I cannot ping the virtual adapter (192.168.97.1) – Destination host unreachable.

My knowledge or lack thereof networking tells me the error is routing related. So, how do I solve this?

The expedition begins….

I’ve decided to do a fresh install of VB 3.2.12 to see if there is anything I missed…(RTM…that would also help a great deal)

The first thing I noticed… was that from previous versions to this one – the network component is marked clearly:

Virtual networking – Bridged Networking & Host-Only Networking

This then brings back the question: How do you get the “Host-Only” networking to work in such a way that you can run an internal network.

Remember my setup:

Host runs Windows 7, with 4GB Ram,

Guests run Windows XP, Windows 2008 R2, Windows 2003 each with 20GB VDI, 1024Mb Ram.

At any point, I would like to run two virtual machines (as I can with VMWare Server)

Simple, right?

Expedition part 1 continues….

But….when you start to configure components yourself…..

Internal Network Setup:

Virtual Machine Host 1 -

<img style="background-image: none;
