Making a Star Burst Shirt

For Christmas this year I wanted to make everyone a shirt with our names on it. On the front I put everyone's first name and on the back I did our last name. I called this a star burst shirt because, to me, it looks like a star burst around our names.

The first thing I did was cut the names out of contact paper using my Cricut. I have done this before by cutting the word out of freezer paper and ironing it on but using contact paper was faster and worked just as good

After peeling the backing off I stuck it on the shirt where I wanted it.

This next step helped seal the edges and stopped the paint from bleeding under the contact paper. On my previous project I did it on white t-shirts so I just used white fabric paint but with these blue shirts I needed something either the same color as the shirt or something clear. I decided to try glue. I used Elmer's Glue All. I poured some into a little dish that I had and with a pencil I dipped it in the glue and went around all the edges (update: After using Elmer's Glue All I found that some of the paint, especially smaller area, such as the middle of a letter, have started coming off after washing. Next time I will be trying fabric glue)

I wanted to make sure the edges were completely covered.

Here you can see it covered in the glue. I made sure to get inside of the a d also.

Once the glue was dry I went on to the next step.

You need at least two different colors of fabric paint. I chose a slick white and a metallic silver fabric paints.

The metallic paint is a little thinner consistency and I found that it lets some of the white show through so it worked great to start with the white paint. Using the same technique as with the glue I use the eraser side of the pencil and dipped it into the paint and started dabbing it around the edge of my last name.

Here is a short video clip on how to dot with the paint. Sorry for the loud humming noise. I had my little space heater on warming up my feet.

From time to time the paint built up around the edge of the eraser and I needed to wipe it off to continue to get clean edged dots. Other wise it made sort of a splattered dot.

Once I completely cover the edges of my name I filled in all around working my way out in a star burst pattern. I filled in any spaces using a lot of dots around the name then spacing them out as I went further out. Remember you will be adding in a second color so you will want to leave space for that.

When my first color finished drying I filled in with my second color. I did same thing as I did for the first by going over around the edges of the name going right on top of the first color and then spacing them out as I got further out from the name.

Once that dried I peeled away the contact paper and my name came out crisp and clean.

You can use this technique with all kinds of things. Names, shapes, sports logos.... you are only limited by you imagination. If you have any questions or need me to clarify anything please let me know.

I have always been bad about remembering to take pictures. Sadly there are not many pictures of my oldest kids growing up because I never remembered to grab the camera. If you were like me I know you understand.

In this day and time of wonderful technology no one (even me) has that excuse anymore. My cell phone probably has a better camera than my actual camera does. The problem now is I have all these pictures just sitting on my phone.

For those of you who homeschool I have an awesome resource that might interest you. It is a site call Classics for Kids. This is what they say. "This site is designed to help you introduce your child to classical music. Music not only has the power to stimulate the mind, enrich the heart and soothe the soul; it can help children to think more creatively, develop craftsmanship and discipline and learn the value of excellence."

One thing I love about this site is that they feature one composer each month and each week they have different actives based around that composer. They have radio shows that you can listen to and lots of different kinds of actives to help kids be excited about the classics including games, learning about the instruments of the orchestra, musical dictionary, audio of Classics for Kids programs, and collections for music from periods in music history.

They have sections for parents and teachers along with lesson plans, activity sheets, and they list lots of additional resources that are available to you to help teach your kids about classical music. They have made it so easy and no previous knowledge is needed. Check this site out and tell me what your favorite part is.

My Pinterest Obsession

I know most of you are familiar with pinterest. I have been a member for awhile now and I am obsessed!! I could spend hours and hours on there. I have completed several things that I have pinned but there are many, many more things that I have pinned that I want to do, like....

an upholstered headboard. I have been wanting to do this for over a year now. Maybe one day I can get to it.

Isn't this wall clock using pictures the neatest thing. This is my next project for sure. I have already started getting my supplies together.

I love words and this silhouette lamp shade is just awesome. I have the lamp I want to use it with I just don't know what word or phrase I want to use yet.

Now these are just genius. It is a 4 room doll house using 3 ring binders. You just have to check out how this is made.

I have recently started pinning fashion ideas. I am obsessed I tell you.

For all of you that are still here reading this blog I would like to say thank you for sticking around. I sort of took a unexpected break for a while. Most of you probably don't know but was verbally attacked by an "anonymous" person in some of my posts. To me this person isn't so anonymous. I know exactly who it was and I even know why they were doing it and that is their problem not mine. That is all I am going to say about that.

So what I have been up to? Well, my divorced was finalized in January so now I am officially a single woman. I am working on growing my etsy shop. If you read this post you will remember my quilled monograms. I think I have really perfected them and have finally set them up in my etsy shop. DIY vampire teeth

My 12 yr daughter wanted to be a vampire for Halloween this year and we had issues coming up with ways for her to have vampire teeth.

I went to a Halloween shop and found these super cool teeth that glue onto your incisors.

but they were $10 and for just one little part of a costume I thought that was a bit much. It didn't help that it was not recommended for children.

Another problem that we had that made these (and almost every other idea I had) not work is this

she is missing one of her incisors and the other is just starting to grow in.

One idea was those cheep novelty fanged teeth

but believe it or not we could not find these anywhere. I'm sure most of us had a pair of these at one time in our childhood. From what I remember they were very uncomfortable and were hard to keep in and to talk with too. I figured there had to be a easy but better way.

So I went to youtube to see what I could find.

First I found this video

Even though these are awesome I didn't have the time to make the different molds and once again she didn't have incisor teeth to work with. Not to mention the price would probably be more than the ones at the Halloween shop.

Then I found this cute little video

What is she? 5? So stinking cute. She takes a little while to get to the point but this is a neat tempory idea. But once again we ran into the problem with no incisors to work with.

Then I found this one that was a spring board for my idea.

This idea by itself is great but, you know, the incisor thing.

So I went to the store to see what I could come up with. I went to the Dollar General up the street from my house. Just so you know I decided to tackle this about 1 1/2 hours before we were heading out to trick or treat.

I found the nails

they were only $1.

Then I went looking for the denture cream to see if maybe I could just stick it to her gum. That's basically what dentures do right?

That is when I saw this

and the little spark went off. Since it was only $2 I thought sure why not.

I got home and chose which nail would work best in her mouth, which happened to be the smallest.

Then I filed them down but not to pointy so that it wouldn't accidentally poke or cut her.

Then I glued them onto the mouth guard. I wanted to use super glue but since I didn't have any and also since this would be in her mouth I didn't know how toxic that could be so I just used hot glue. They can peel off fairly easy so it was easy to adjust but they stayed on good enough that they lasted the night.

Here they are in her mouth.

See the guard sits up on the gum line. When she closes her mouth you can't even see the guard or the top of the fake nail.

Here she is in her make up and teeth.

They look awesome if I do say so myself and for $3 it was a perfect fit (even without incisor teeth lol)

She was very excited about them and they definitely topped off her costume.
