iTrace is an RFID and barcode based Blood Product Tracking system that enables improved compliance with FDA tracking requirements for blood products, enables cross hospital inventory optimization to reduce waste from outdated products and improves patient safety by preventing the release of unsuitable blood products. The FDA recently approved the 510(k) clearance for iTrace.

“This effort represents the culmination of years of hard work by Rodeina Davis (principle investigator for the STTR grant, and a luminary in the transfusion medicine field), and the consortium members in bringing a much
needed innovation to the market in a collaborative manner. The FDA 510(k) clearance and commercialization will ensure that the cumulative efforts of the consortium benefit the transfusion medicine industry as a whole”,
said Lynne Briggs VP and CIO at BloodCenter of Wisconsin. “Our pilot of iTrace for Blood Centers showed marked improvements in efficiency and accuracy in reconciling and tracking blood products from collections
through distribution”.

“We are happy to now initiate the transfer of the 510K clearance to S3Edge to enable further commercialization of iTrace for Blood Centers. Today’s announcement showcases our commitment not just to create compelling
technology, but to realize the vision of creating a successful product for the transfusion medicine industry” said Tina Chang, CEO of SysLogic, Inc., a Brookfield, Wisconsin-based information systems consulting and
services firm, one of the founding members of the consortium and awardee of the STTR grant.

“The RFID system provided equivalent capabilities to
those of IPR in terms of detecting and resolving process errors. It additionally provided the blood bank staff real-time visibility for blood products in transit to the point-of-care and in remote storage in our emergency department. We are excited by the potential of this technology to further improve transfusion safety in operating rooms because of its hands-free non-invasive nature” said Dr. Thomas J.
“As the exclusive commercialization partner selected by the RFID Consortium, this is an exciting development that enables us to broadly market and deploy iTrace for Blood Centers. We look forward to completing the requirements for the transfer of the 510K from SysLogic and bringing this solution to the market. This significant milestone could not have happened without the efforts, guidance and leadership of the consortium. We look forward to working in tandem with this team of health care stakeholders and distinguished researchers
to ensure Blood Centers around the world can take full advantage of this new system”, said Mark Anastas, President of S3Edge Inc.

“The iTrace for Blood Centers device has the ability to enhance blood safety by helping to ensure that unsuitable units are not released,” said Karen Midthun, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. “iTrace for Blood Centers will be used in blood establishments by trained personnel as a tool in streamlining blood collection and processing and aiding in product tracking and reconciliation.”

Read the press release here

S3Edge is proud to announce that iTrace for Blood Centers, the first application to use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in blood establishments to assist in enhancing blood safety by preventing the release of unsuitable blood components, was cleared today by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The device was cleared for marketing based on the submission of a premarket notification, often referred to as a 510(k). A 510(k) submission made to the FDA demonstrates that the device is at least as safe and effective as, that is, substantially equivalent to, a legally marketed device that is not subject to a premarket application.

This is a significant milestone in the commercialization of iTrace for Blood Centers (developed and owned by S3Edge as part of the Transfusion Medicine RFID Consortium – read more here), and we look forward to working with Blood Centers and Hospitals world-wide to deploy this key piece of technology to keep our blood supply safe, secure, and operationally efficient.

Stay tuned for more updates! In the interim you can read more about the solution at http://www.s3edge.com/solutions/healthcare and sign up at www.s3edge.com to be notified when the product launches.

Cheers!

S3Edge is extremely pleased to announce that Carrier Corporation, a Fortune 50 company that’s part of United Technologies will be keynoting at the upcoming RFID Journal Live event to talk about the mission-critical solution they’ve deployed in production with our software and hardware from our partners (Impinj, Xploretech, SMARTRAC, Xerafy, and Motorola).

Below is the description of the keynote session on May 1st at RFID Journal Live 2013, the world’s largest RFID event in Orlando, Florida.

How Carrier Made Excellent Manufacturing Even Better With RFID
Carrier, a leader in high-technology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, is part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. and a provider of technology to the aerospace and building systems industries worldwide. In January 2012, the company’s 900,000-square-foot manufacturing plant, located in Collierville, Tenn., was named one of IndustryWeek’s top-10 Best Plants in North America for 2011. In September 2011, the plant deployed an RFID system to create an automated shipping and component verification solution in a high-volume and high-velocity environment. Hear how the solution was designed and implemented, how it reduced truck-loading errors by more than 80 percent and how it boosted shipping productivity by 33 percent, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual savings. In addition, learn what’s ahead for RFID at Carrier.

Speaker:

Balaji Suresh, Materials Manager, UTC Climate, Controls & Security, Carrier

If you are in Orlando this week, and would like to discuss this in more detail, drop me a note.

Cheers
