The Internal Revenue Service awarded nearly $10 million in matching grants to Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs) for the 2014 grant year (Jan. 1, 2014, through Dec. 31, 2014).
LITCs are organizations that represent low income taxpayers in federal tax disputes with the IRS for free or for a nominal fee, organizations that provide tax education and outreach to taxpayers who speak English as a second language, or organizations that do both.

Wondering what the standard mileage rates are for 2014?

"Beginning on Jan. 1, 2014, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:

Standard Mileage Rates

56 cents per mile for business miles driven

23.5 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes

14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations

The business, medical, and moving expense rates decrease one-half cent from the 2013 rates. The charitable rate is based on statute. The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs."

Remember: Taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard mileage rates.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service reminds U.S. citizens and resident aliens, including those with dual citizenship who have lived or worked abroad during all or part of 2012, that they may have a U.S. tax liability and a filing requirement in 2013.
The filing deadline is Monday, June 17, 2013, for U.S. citizens and resident aliens living overseas, or serving in the military outside the U.S. on the regular due date of their tax return. Eligible taxpayers get two additional days because the normal June 15 extended due date falls on Saturday this year. Read more....

IRS Accepting Tax Returns with Education Credits, Depreciation
WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced that taxpayers will be able to start filing two major tax forms next week covering education credits and depreciation.

Starting Sunday, Feb. 10, the IRS will start processing tax returns that contain Form 4562, Depreciation and Amortization. And on Thursday, Feb. 14, the IRS plans to start processing Form 8863, Education Credits. This step clears the way for almost all taxpayers to start filing their tax returns for 2012. These forms affected the largest groups of taxpayers who weren’t able to file following the Jan. 30 opening of the 2013 tax season.

The IRS will be able to accept the education credits and depreciation forms following the completion of reprogramming and testing of its systems. Work continues on preparing IRS systems to accept the remaining tax forms affected by the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA) enacted by Congress on Jan. 2 ......

Call and ask to speak with a tax advisor for a FREE TAX REFUND ESTIMATE before you prepare your 2012 taxes at 1-866-801-3359 .
I love it. This tax season was not so bad. I have to admit though that many of the returns that I worked on were a little difficult in the sense that the tax code has become so complex over the last 10 years.

The last official day for filing your taxes was Thursday, April 15th. Yaay! :-) The IRS will charge you interest and penalties if you did not file and you owe taxes. If you filed an extension, you will still be penalized but it keeps the IRS notices from becoming threatening and alarming. The next filing or e-file date is August 15th, 2010.

If you have not filed and need to file, we can help you. Go to our home page and choose from one of our available options or call and make an appointment to see a tax counselor.

Retirees, disabled individuals and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration.

Disabled veterans receiving benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Here's why. The child tax credit has been amended to increase eligibility for the refundable portion of the child tax credit for 2009 and 2010. For both years, the refundable portion of the child tax credit is calculated on 15% of the tax payers earned income in excess of $3000. In contrast, for 2008, the refundable portion of the child tax credit is calculated based on 15 percent of the tax payer's earned income in excess of $8500. What this means to you- it allows taxpayers in higher tax brackets to qualify for the credit and existing taxpayers that qualified already to receive more of the refundable portion of the credit.
The credit will typically be received through an automated reduction of income tax withholding by the employer beginning in early spring of 2009. Some people will see a small increase in their take home pay.

What this means to you for this tax season; this means that you will receive an extra $400 for individuals and up to $800 for married taxpayers filing jointly under the Making Work Pay- American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 in your tax refund if you fall into the lower tax brackets.

The credit phases out for individual taxpayers with adjusted gross income in excess of $75,000 or $150,000 in the case of married couples filing jointly. Also, individuals or married couples with multiple jobs whose combined income puts them in a higher tax bracket may need to adjust their W4 to qualify for the credit.
Some unemployment benefits are tax exempt in 2009. Normally, unemployment compensation is taxable. But up to $2400 in unemployment compensation received in 2009 will be exempt from taxes. For example: if you received $4500 in unemployment income last year, only $2100 of that amount is taxable. However, new for the tax year 2009, there are additional EITC and Income thresholds for a third qualifying child as two new rules have been added to the definition of a "qualifying child".
