He's climbed the organizational ladder very quietly despite having some solid success at both Myrtle Beach and Mississippi. I don't know if his stuff is good enough to get big league batters out on a consistent basis. I also don't see him reaching the major leagues with Atlanta, meaning his opportunity would likely come with a team that's struggling with pitching depth.

Ryne pitched very well at Mississippi, the Braves' Double-A affiliate. He went 7-9, 3.47 with only 127 hits in 148 innings pitched. He walked 59, but onyl struck out 89. It was a solid season at an upper level!

So let's hope Ryne ends up with a team that needs pitching depth!

Thirty! Compared to that, only one player has reached the major league: Brad Mills (Harrisonburg 05). I would love to see some research about how long most minor league players remain active in professional ball before they are released or retire. Are the majority out of pro ball within two years?

Anyway, to see the entire spreadsheet of all of the 57 players and their career stats, click Players from 2007 Draft.

Here are the top 5 hitters and pitchers from this draft class:

Hitters

Garrett Parcell (Covington 04): 1-0, 0.44, 1 save, 0.84 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9, 9.7 K/9 in 40 2/3 innings for Jupiter and Jacksonville

As a group, this bunch doesn't look as strong at the 2008 draftees...but, of course, I could be wrong. Again, Mills made the majors for the Blue Jays this year, and most of the players on this list have reached Double-A, so they are only a phone call away.

ATVL's #4 hitter, Tampa's Mike Schwartz, was a mainstay in the Harrisonburg Turk lineup in 2009.

In 44 games and 127 at-bats, Mike hit 323/508/535, with 23 runs, 11 doubles, 2 triples, 4 home runs, 28 RBI, and an unreal 43/14 BB/K ratio. Yes, you read that right: the fan favorite walked 43 times and struck out only 18 times. He led the league in walks, on-base percentage, and OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage). There were four guys who finished with an OPS over 1.000; Schwartz finished at 1.043. Oddly enough, Mike was not invited to either the All-Star game in Woodstock or the Classic against the Cal Ripken League, but he did participate in the un-exciting home run derby.

Mike spent his first two college seasons at Hillsborough Community College, where stats were unavailable. The only stats ATVL could unearth were his averages: .433 as a freshman and .403 as a sophomore, and that he hit 5 home runs and drove in 43 runs as a freshman. He was given the Rawlings "Big Stick Award" and was an All-American as a sophomore, and was first team All-State both seasons.

In 2009, Mike played for Tampa, and continued his hit-tastic ways. He finished at 368/477/653, with 52 runs, 12 doubles, 14 home runs, 58 RBI, and a 27/30 BB/K ratio in 55 games and 190 at-bats. Then the awards came flowing in. Schwartz was named a Division-II All-American by the Jewish Sports Review, a member of the Division-II All-South Region Team by NCBWA, All-South Region second team by Daktronics, and was named to the All-Sunshine State Conference team.

Congratulations on your excellent summer, Mike!

Pictures courtesy of Haymarket Joe Photography!

On October 31, Riley made a ridiculous one-handed catch for a touchdown- here it is:

(And of their soul, if ATVL's observations during the finals were correct.) He pounded the ball to the tune of 345/413/495, with 34 runs, 69 hits, 14 doubles, 2 triples, 4 home runs, 33 RBI, 99 total bases, and a 16/30 BB/K ratio in 51 games and 200 at-bats. He added 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts as well. Greg led the league in hits, finished 4th in total bases, and 5th in batting average.

Of course, Greg is no less a hitter with an aluminum bat in his hands. As a freshman at St. John's, he hit 304/386/473, with 12 doubles, 2 triples, 5 home runs, and a 24/30 BB/K ratio in 184 at-bats. He really walloped the ball in his sophomore season, upping his numbers to 349/411/550, with 11 doubles, a triple, 7 home runs, and a 17/18 BB/K ratio in 169 at-bats.

Obviously chosen to participate in the All-Star game, Greg went 2-4 in Woodstock, and then went 0-2 in the Mid-Atlantic Classic against the Cal Ripken League.

Hopkins showed his hitting chops in the first playoff series against the first-ranked Staunton Braves, going 5-10 in the two games, both Haymarket wins, with 6 runs scored and 5 RBI.

ATVL was able to ask Greg a couple questions last week- here's the transcript:

"ATVL: You've obviously been an excellent hitter for St. John's your first two
years with aluminum. What was your approach to hitting with wood this
summer?

GH: My approach with wood this summer was to use the whole field. It's easy
to get away with being pull happy with aluminum. But my approach this
summer was to use the whole field, I tried to stay up the middle of the
field. I used [wood] last summer as well for the first time (other than in
the cages), so I had a better feel and more confidence with the wood
bat this past summer.

ATVL: How would you describe your experience over the summer?

GH: I wouldn't trade this past summer for a thing. Our team at Haymarket
was something else, we had a good feeling from the very beginning of
the summer. I made some great friends on that Haymarket team and had
fun playing baseball, and won a championship, what else could you ask
for? The coaches were awesome too, everyone was on the same page and
things clicked from day one.

ATVL: What's it mean to be named MVP of the league?

GH: Being named MVP is definitely something I'm proud of. I had a good
mindset going into this past summer, I went into it telling myself to
work hard and have fun. And that's what we did, we had fun the whole
summer. A lot of summer ball teams want to get home as soon as
possible, but it was different with this team. We were simply having
too much fun playing baseball. One of my best friends Mike Lang gets my
vote for MVP though, we wouldn't have even made the playoffs if it
wasn't for him. Also, Tom La Stella and Evan Noell were a huge part of
the successful summer, we worked hard on and off the field, no one
works harder at their game than those two. I wish them the best of luck
this year at Coastal!"

Congratulations on your excellent year, Greg!

Pictures courtesy, as usual, of Haymarket Joe Photography!
