Join the Food Revolution with environmental and peace activist Ocean Robbins.

In this episode, we talk with Ocean Robbins, an internationally known speaker on the topics of peace and the environment. He tells us about the upcoming Food Revolution Summit, a free online event organized together with his father John Robbins, author of Diet for a New America. The Food Revolution Summit brings together revolutionary thinkers and visionaries to talk about today’s food crisis and healthy eating and living.

We also warn you about a con artist who sets up bogus organizations targeting animal welfare, health, and environmental groups. And, we give you an update on our Earth Day celebration.

And, of course, we highlight the latest News from the Vegan Frontier, let you know about vegan related happenings in and around Central Oregon, and more!

All Things Vegan airs on KPOV, Bend Community Radio.

We also bring you a couple of interviews from Vida Vegan Con, a vegan bloggers conference that we attended in Portland in August 2011. We talk with Jen Molica, of the That Pain in the Ass Vegan blog, about how she used her art degree and creative cooking skills to win a contest that sent her to VidaVeganCon , food blogging, feeding her family on a budget, and how not to be that pain in the ass vegan. We also sit down with Christy Morgan, the Blissful Chef, to hear all about her unique combination of vegan and macrobiotic cooking, beautifully demonstrated in her new cookbook, Blissful Bites: Vegan Meals That Nourish Mind, Body, and Planet.

On this show, we bring you goodies back from our weekend at Portland VegFest. We sat down for a few minutes with 15-year-old Juliette West, star of the riveting documentary, How I Became an Elephant, which was screened at VegFest. Juliette was just 14 years old when she set out to Thailand to see for herself how elephants are mistreated there, to meet Lek, Asia’s famous “Elephant Lady,” and to take part in rescuing one elephant, who becomes a symbol to the world of humanity’s capacity for cruelty… and compassion.

We also bring you a talk by Chris DeRose, author, actor, and animal activist, who spoke the weekend of VegFest at Red and Black Cafe. Chris tells the story of how a homeless dog changed his life and transformed him into an animal lover and activist, willing to put his freedom on the line for the animals. Chris is the author of In Your Face: From Actor to Animal Activist and founder of Last Chance for Animals.

We catch up with Rip Esselstyn, author of “The Engine Two Diet.” Rip, unlike his namesake, is a very industrious man. A world-class triathlete turned firefighter, Rip Esselstyn learned that one of his fellow Engine 2 firefighters in Austin, Texas had a life-threateningly high cholesterol level. During his 10+ years as a professional triathlete, Rip had adopted a plant-based diet at the advice of his father, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, chief of surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. (Dr. Esselstyn discovered through medical research that a plant-based diet, low fat diet could reverse heart disease and diabetes.) Rip put this knowledge to work in helping to motivate the entire Engine 2 firehouse to transition to a healthy “plant-strong” diet. Out of this experience, The Engine Two Diet was formed.

We also bring you a woman-on-the-street interview with 38-year vegan “Vegan Sid” during the Mercy for Animals Farm to Fridge Tour in Portland. She tells her story of a look behind factory farm walls.

We talk with local naturalist and wildlife conservationist Marilyn Miller about the lethal methods of Canada Goose population control that were used last year by Bend Park and Recreation District. Marilyn discusses ways to reduce the resident population without resorting to killing more geese, and explains why killing geese is never going to resolve the poop problem in our city parks. She has been working with the local citizen’s group Goose Watch Alliance, to stop another gassing of Canada Geese this summer in Drake Park.

Did you know that 10 non-target species are trapped for every targeted species? Most of these animals are maimed or fatally wounded. Documentary filmmaker Vanessa Schulz shares this and other disturbing facts with us about the trapping industry. We discuss the government agency, Wildlife Services (formerly Animal Damage Control), an agency with the primary purpose of killing 4 million wild animals a year with taxpayer dollars on public lands. Vanessa also gives us an update on her film in progress, “Lost Dogs,” which uncovers the epidemic problem of Chile’s homeless pet population and explores the extraordinary lives of street dogs and the activists who risk everything they have to protect the dogs. In this episode, we air Part 2 of our interview with Vanessa. Part 1 aired May 12.

In this episode, we air Part 1 of our interview with Vanessa. Part 2 will air June 14.

We talk with Phil Letten, of Mercy for Animals, during the Farm to Fridge Tour. The tour stops in major cities in a multi-media truck showing the Farm to Fridge video, and they talk with the public about why they should boycott the cruelty of eating meat. According to Phil, major national polls have shown that well over 90% of Americans are opposed to cruelty to animals, including farmed animals, “It’s a matter of awareness and people understanding that when we eat meat we are supporting cruelty to animals.”

This month’s vegan spotlight: Dick Gregory, comedian, civil rights activist, animal advocate, and author.
